Since coming to Ghana we have noticed that people are sometimes overly friendly to us and we don't really know how to act. So lets have a talk about the elephant in the room.

Totally agree. One thing that helped me was having a strong positive view of myself by any means necessary. My mom is light and I'm dark. Blacks were very vocal about how I was not as pretty as my mom and it created a division between us. My mom always told me I was beautiful but I did not believe her because of other people's comments. When I reached my 20s I realized that the issue wasn't me or my mom, but people around me so I mentally had to start blocking out people. I would cut off people who tried to push the dark skin vs. light skin narrative and be open to people who were naturally positive. Most times I appear very mean, but it's because I set up a barrier for the colorism and stupidity to not come in. It's not the best fix but it works for me and helps me focus on people who matter to me versus people who don't.

The problem is that, we allow ourselves to be lied to by thinking everything from the western side is better than ours and unfortunately, we get top notch people who buy this lie cos of selfish gains. We leave are almighty organic black soap to go for foreign ones, we leave our herbs and go for processed food derived from our own organic food at a higher cost We leave our own organic tomato paste and go for that of chinese which is 95% inorganic. Ekumfi Juice/ Eku juice is 100% organic from our own soil but we prefer Pepsi, coke and others over ours. We have cocoa whiskey but no, we want the one from the west We have our own chocolate manufacturer (Biko) but we prefer to import from Switzerland......why will we be respected if we can't do things on our own and appreciate who we are.

It’s very enlightening to have people sit and talk about issues that affect our society and how to address such issues; the ultimate is to remedy the issues by creating awareness through various platform. I personally think 💭 issues like this are very minor and normal so long as humans are involved. The fingers are not equal and will never be equal. This are the things that need careful, and immediate remedy. 1. Checks and balance systems put in place to uphold the rule of law; the rule of law as distinguished from any arbitrary powers to simply mean no one is above the law. (Good luck on this) 2. Right to due process/ equal representation before the law 3. The ruling elite structure needs to be pulled down. 4. Provision of quality education 5. We should recognize that all men are created equal; regardless of skin color, gender, affiliations, stature, etc we are all created equal. We breathe same air, bleed 🩸 the same, and we are only here temporarily. Land does not belong to anyone, it belongs to the creator. No one ☝️ has died and carried all his or possessions with him. So the structures that be; that allow the ruling elite to continue to oppress the poor needs to be dismantled. Go to Ibrahim Oppong channel on RU-vid Crime check TV and you will realize that the issue of dark skin vs light skin is minor compared to atrocities Ghanaians 🇬🇭 face in the hands of the law. The ruling elite get away with murder, theft, corruption and all forms of crimes against humanity. And you have a judge who rules in their favor and send a poor man to massive time in prison etc. On issues of color, all we can do is create awareness and educate. With equal treatment, this things will fall in line easily. Again let me state here that the poor will always be amongst us but we can create an enabling environment for all to spring to success. We have a long way to travel 🧳 SKT In Focus

I grew up partly in West Africa in the 80s and 90s, the whole fair skin thing was not as bad as it is now. Yes people always had those light skin jokes and stuff even then, however; i remember in high school we had mixed, Lebanese and light skin girls, but the truth is, guys weren't really obsessed with them like that, i don't know maybe because we were used to them, but they were treated normal, make no mistake they were extremely good looking; however, us lads had more crushes for other dark skin girls too. Social media as a new media platform accessible to everyone has made it worse, back in the day you only had the occasional movies, cable TV, vogue magazine e.t.c (which lets be honest, half of these were only available to middle-upper class Africans), so casualty damage was minimal in the 90s. Instagram alone is enough to make people insecure now with the amount of image flexing. lol Most R&B girl groups we listened to in Africa (Although American) back then were also very dark, SWV, brownstone, Blackgirl, Total, Kut Klose, Jade e.t.c, but you gotta be the shade of Mrs Knowles these days to be idolised.

I’m closer to Anna’s color and I grew up in America. I always felt left out and delt with racism in school because everyone else was white. I wanted to be white until the age of about 13 and honestly I think I looked down on darker people. The only thing that made me love myself was learning about my African heritage. I didn’t have enough exposure before but really connecting with Africa made me realize how beautiful I am and how beautiful all Africans are. Now whenever I meet someone from Africa I beg them to tell me everything about home lol. I think Anna and Kevin talked about this before but this is part of the reason Westerners move to Africa. It just feels nice to be surrounded by people who look like you and won’t judge the color of your skin. And that’s why colorism is such a huge problem. To be judged by your own people must be even worse than being judged by white people.

And that's one the main reasons bleaching skin is popular here in Africa. Even your hair, if you jst wear your afro out, somebody will ask you when r getting your hair done. What Wendy said sounded about self-confidence sounds so familiar to me. I’m halfcast but as Anna said considered dark in the Netherlands and any time I would go out with my white Dutch friends in my teens, they would get all the attention and my other halfcast friend and I would be left alone, this really lowered my self-esteem. I think this is indeed because how media portrays colour, as in the Netherlands foreigners are often negative in the media and this creates a negative stereotype, while in Ghana light skins get more positive media feedback which creates an attractive stereotype.. Thank you for making this a topic to think about and for being so open and accepting.. Much love ❤️

Annas closing message is food for thought. I personally have been complimented on my eyes since I was a little girl. Both men and women tend to be in awe of them and initially, I was shocked at each and every single complement. The thing people don't know is, in as much as my eyes are esthetically pleasing to look at, I suffer from chronic pain in them. During worst episodes , it feels like I have needles poking at them and I'll literally throw myself on the floor , screaming and holding on to them due to excruciating pain. My parents tried everything and took me to all the opticians and surgeons they could afford in Europe but to very little comfort. I am now 30 years old and living in the UK. Although medicine have come along way and there are therapys and treatment available to help elevate the pain, doctors have advised that unfortunately I'll always suffer some level of pain from my eyes . When I try to tell people this , many continue to say they still wish they had my eyes . Please people, just like Anna said , do NOT envy others because more times than not, they are suffering a battle you'll THANK God he saved you from. Stay blessed ✨

We talk about this int he context of Western societies but often neglect how deeply rooted colorism is in our African societies. Thank you for creating space for this conversation. All three of you are so beautiful it's a pity some people can not see that.

Love the guests and love that you’re talking about these sorts of things and raising awareness but there’s a lot you can do Anna to help stop this. One of them is refusing the offer of privilege when it’s extended to you (like you did in the example you shared) but going further to let the person know you aren’t different from everyone else’s because of your skin colour (you need to let them know that you’re aware why they are doing that). The reason these things continue is that they’re people who accept these privileges so we need to call these behaviours out when we see it. You have a beautiful platform to raise awareness of these issues so continue to play your part and raise awareness and not let it be talked about just once. The media is destroying the confidence of young black men and women which breaks my heart. Btw, I’m a new subscriber and so happy to see you and your family move back home. It truly is refreshing to see. Now people let’s get them more subs and watch the ads to support this family.

Anna, when someone tries to give you special treatment just let them know you consider yourself no better/different than your fellow Africans. You can even share with some of them your experience abroad so they can see your point of view. You won't persuade all of them, but still. It's nutty that Africans are doing this to themselves.

Once upon a time, a certain group of people lived in paradise. They had gold, lush green forests, ate from the land etc. They were very hospitable. They extended their hospitality to all guests. Eventually, the guests used gun powder to enslave their hosts. The hosts also collaborated. Enslavement was succeeded by colonialism. In the process, the paradise dwellers lost confidence in everything about themselves including their own skin color, names, vegetation, religion, food etc. Long story short, they remain in a perpetual chase to adopt the culture of those who put them in this predicament. Their political leaders also rob them and take the loot to the colonizer. The solution? Emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.

Thank you for sharing. They are so beautiful.Yes, we need to accept our skin colour as is and love who we are. Giving privilege to light skin is a sign of hatred towards the darker skin. We need to rid our mind set (belief system) of the West views of thinking. All this comes from the way the "West" operate. We must drop that mentality and love ourselves, let the West mind set go and embrace each other with our beautiful shades of skin colour. "The West" indoctrinated us to believe in such a system of colorism..

This vlog is sharp. The problem lies around the brain washing initially coming from the west: United States and Europe based media. But you gotta ask why are they doing this in the first place? Black skin is beautiful, so what's the problem? A lot of hypocrisy and anytime someone is being hypocritical, they have issues. As an African American, I love black women and always will. All three of you guys are very beautiful and please please don't feel bad about your skin color. Otherwise it's control. This vlog was sharp, please keep coming out with more vlogs!!

We have to get out of European beauty standards. We are born with the skin God designed for us to have. Light, brown, dark is all beautiful. I hope those that bleach find the strength to stop because of the damage it causes in the long run. I’ve also seen women birth darker children and bleach them as well. This is highly problematic and may cause cancers and developmental issues because of the chemicals leeching into their bodies. Please understand that your skin is a blessing. It was created to protect you and shield you from the sun. Appreciate and acknowledge the beauty that you have. Please. Black, in ALL shades, is stunningly beautiful.

What about the legendary model Grace Jones? She was very dark skinned and Famous for it. It's not about just skin color, it's also about facial features. Some people are just considered more beautiful because of head shape, or Facial symmetry, etc... You can bleach all you want but if the right features are not there it won't work. That's why some people are fashion models and some are not. Body shape, height, weight, determine our perceptions of beauty. And beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is beautiful to me may not be beautiful to you. I love all women personally. All shades and sizes are on the menu for me :) A total package that also includes a nice personality. You could be the most beautiful women on the planet but if your personality sucks, I am not interested.

You are full of wisdom...I saw that right from the first video I watched about your family moving to Ghana...and in one of your videos (I think when you were looking for school for your kids), you bought something and the person wanted to give it to you for free or smthg, then you questioned if this wasn't a "privilege".... Interesting topic. I think we need to politely challenge colourism or ask deeper questions when we come across it if the opportunity presents. This might help change people's perceptions. Just because it's been around a long time doesn't mean we should accept it. I know of a fair guy who told his dark skin girlfriend he could give her light skin babies...they're no longer together.
