Here is a simple yet accurate test as to whether or not you will enjoy living in Hawaii: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." If you understand that old saying, and can apply it to your daily life, you will do fine here. If you don't understand it, or won't apply it, your life here will be a struggle. Simple as that.
Really appreciate the straight forward truth and realistic approach of your posts. Would highly recommend your posts to anyone thinking of moving there.
Don't know if you have covered this in other videos but one important thing to consider is the availability and quality of medical care. Queens on Oahu is pretty good. But you can be caught in bad way on other islands, and are forced to head to Oahu for any (good)serious care. It is a much better place for the healthy young to middle age as far as that goes. I want to stress this especially for the Big Island and Kauai. The vog also really affects some people acutely.
@@pavloocean1071 , vog is a huge concern. I lived in Kona twenty years ago and was sick much of the time. I'm retiring soon and moving back to Hawaii, but can't return to my beloved Big Island. I'm going to Kauai, which is lovely, but my heart is still in Kona.
Thanks for being honest, I believe that if someone wants to move to the Big Island they have to be well informed and prepared, it is what it is. Keeping the dream alive, thanks.
Good discussion. SUMMARY negatives: hostile locals, very expensive!!, poor food, not intellectual, homelessness suffering, black mold and bugs, lack of diversity of nature/birds/animals, indigenous resentment of billionaires (THIS is justified!), cut off from rest of the world, road rage, slow pace of life. I wonder how the medical facilities and hospitals are?
Jill S Doctors are good, but there is a SEVERE shortage of doctors state wide. The outer islands are the worse and in many instances those folks must come to Oahu for care. The doctors I have, in my estimation are fantastic. All are caring with great educations--even Ivy League educations. If you live in Honolulu, toward town, everything, all the doctors are all within 15 minutes of my place. However, the place is EXTREMELY expensive, it is common to have 15 people, or more, live in one house with two or three bedrooms. But, as far as healthcare, it’s very good.
I'm often astounded by the cavalier attitude many people seem to have about moving to Hawaii. Even as a local my upcoming move to Oahu from the Big Island would not be possible if I didn't have housing secured and family support and connections in Oahu. When I hear about people selling everything and moving to Hawaii I get the image of a boy from a coal town or a farm girl from Kansas arriving in LA with just a dream and the clothes on their back.
I have been watching your videos for awhile. I went to Honolulu once and fell in love with the city. I’m lucky enough to have a Union Hall out there, and I am still determined to move out there. I am a Sailor, and I have the ability to work on Matson ships. It is cheaper than where I currently live in the SF Bay Area.
I grew up on oahu 45 years. Being White "haole" was no fun. Racial discrimination is in your face all the time. Cost of living is high on every level. Anything not hidden or locked up in your yard will get stolen. Car broken into is all too common. Drug addicts and homelessness people are everywhere and in your face. Slow heavy traffic everywhere. Drug and booze party culture is everpresent. I had 2 homes robbed, 3 cars and 2 motorcycles stolen over the years. Yeah...clean air, warm ocean, good surf, beautiful jungle and landscape, nice fruit and vegetables, great variety of foods and restaurants, laid back culture, beautiful smelling flowers everywhere. It is a fishbowl environment and everything becomes a rerun after a while. You must adapt to slow traffic, slow progress, low expectations of quality outcome, breaking infrastructure, cockroaches, spiders, centipedes, fire ants, mosquitos, many bugs. Health insurance, car insurance, home insurance, DMV fees, gas, electric, water...all the usual cost of living costs are very high. Lower your expectations of a quality outcome or timely outcome in all aspects of business or relying on services rendered.
I lived in Oahu for 11 years it's my home and the lack of art culture made me feel like a fish out of water. I now live in Germany but will return home after a few years but I know I'll terribly miss the art culture. If you're a concert goer (rock or classical) and love opera... you'll not get that in Hawaii. And yes, it's expensive!!! But...the beaches are the BEST in the world and the weather... rainbows everyday!
Moved to Europe to get lots of European culture - color me surprised. Hawaii's got TONS of culture, just yeah, kinda like on the opera (although Hawaiian singing seems a bit operatic to me).
That intense sun was a wake up call! Its hotter than anywhere on mainland including Florida because that sun intensity, i can be outside in Florida and not burn but in Hawaii i burn in ten minutes without constant sunblock!
30 year surfer, former 10 year resident of Oahu, it's not worth the risk. IF nature turns on the people there, and the seas cannot be traversed, there is no more than a 3 day supply of food on any Island. The people will turn on one another in a heartbeat. The Aloha spirit is dead among most NOT all.
WHY DON'T YOU HELP PEOPLE MAKE TINY HOUSES, INSTEAD OF THEM LIVING IN TENT'S, I'M GOING TO HAWAII TO VISIT, TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO TO GIVE TO THEM. HELP TWINKLE
no more building though (i just dont wanna ruin the land) most of the homeless are from the mainland but the other half is from people who have struggles income taxes, etc so really we cant do anything ause the governemnt is stupid enough to make locals like me and others suffer 9unless that person isnt smart tho)
I am born and raised in Hawaii. If one knows the old Hawaii and compares it to today, Hawaii is NOT paradise. It’s extremely expensive. There’s a lot of homeless. There’s drugs on our streets. To sum it up, Hawaii is not far away from the LA skid row. There is a lot of racist, stereotyping, and judgement going on. The local people are getting pushed out. This is Hawaii, yet there is barely any Hawaiian culture or the mixed culture Hawaii was once known for. Everywhere is nothing but Asian culture, Asian foods which all have that sodium flavor. You can walk into any business and notice 50% - 100% of employees are of Asian decent. All local people including our local elderly people are homeless while foreign Asians occupy the senior housing. Walmart on Keamoku Street employs 100% Filipinos. I am not being racist it’s a fact that people in Hawaii don’t wanna admit to. I am saving to get out of here. I have been to a lot of mainland states and have never seen anything like what I am experiencing in Hawaii right now. I lived in Colorado, it’s beautiful and the people are nice. Texas, Arizona, New Mexico just to name a few states I was treated with respect. Here in Hawaii the Asians look down on Me and stereotype Me. I was recently accused of being the cause of the homeless people sleeping in the garage of where I just moved into a week ago. A group of Asians told the property management company that ever since My son and I moved in to the building, homeless people are coming around. How ignorant is that accusation?! There’s homeless all over Hawaii’s streets, and I highly doubt it’s my families fault.
jey jeff, i was trying to devide between maui or kauai can u do a more in-depth look at the differences, snd pros and cons to each to help with my decision, thanks
That is not what "Brain Drain" means. It was because a lot of people that got degrees from UH went to the mainland instead of staying on Hawaii, because there were no jobs in Hawaii in the tech industry. For somebody living in Hawaii, you really should learn a lot more when speaking on subjects. There are many different type of Hawaiian Sovereignty. There are some people that want every non-Hawaiian out of Hawaii, there are some that want the American government to just acknowledge them, there are some that just want to have the Hawaiian Monarchy back, etc. That's why they can't get one movement together.Facebook man wasn't suing kamaaina, he was suing kanaka maoli, which is totally different.
I live in Pahoa. I have a house to live so I don’t have to pay rent. I spend about two thousand dollars a month. I don’t eat out often. I don’t hang out with friends.
I live in the NYC area. It's very multi-cultural but I would avoid bad neighborhoods like the Bronx unless I'm there in the middle of the day on a crowded street. I'm just wondering how multi-cultural each island is relative to the other. I get the feeling that I'm going to be much safer if I move to Honolulu than if I move to the Big Island. What is your take on that ?
He is definitely right about the Hawaiians being gifted in singing The Waioli Huiia Church in Hanalei on Kauai is fabulous I bought a CD of their music to take back to Texas and I simply love it
Marco Island , Florida is beautiful. The Flora is the same as Hawaii. The weather is not too far different other than the summer is brutal but the winter and fall and spring are gorgeous. The streets are clean, very safe, not a whole lot of rifraf like many other Florida beaches. the neighborhood on the island is littered with tropical homes and flora. The beaches are great. Alot of residence ive talked too that live on Marco Island say it's a mini Maui because Marco island and Maui have alot in common. Plus you're only an 2.5 hours drive to key largo and the Florida keys.
We lived in Kaneohe for a while in a condo. Nice place, but about $2,000 per month. If you tried to use the portable a/c it ran the electric bill up to $500 per month. Traffic was hideous in the heavily populated parts of the island. The nature is beautiful, but many of the locals are butt lazy, on the dole, and live with mom and pop instead of moving away to where they can make a decent living.
funny you call locals butt lazy when we and many other people are working hard im just gonna assume your a disrespectful haole telling by your damn attitude :)
You have to be willing to assimilate in order to be happy in Hawaii, and a lot of people come here and want locals to change for their comfort. Causes a lot of resentment.
My wife lived in Hawaii for 2 years cause her ex husband had a gig there ...she says it was wonderful place EXCEPT for bugs? She claims there were cockroaches everywhere...she never ever has said "dang I wish we could live in hawaii"...and seriously we could live about anywhere as far as money...she likes southern California better ...no cockpit roaches as long as you don't live in some shit hole apartment anyway...Me? I think California sucks but here in southern calif the weather is nice and my kids are here so crappy state or not I just stay here...maybe I should go to hawaii? But I don't like bugs so much either
Drives me nuts when Natives think they're entitled. The Indians do the same thing here in Montana. But what do they do? They get to live in a crappy trailer house on a Reservation, doing absolutely nothing but yet they get a free check in the mail and are on food stamps. You're welcome Natives!
Been to the islands 23 times, Chief. Re: ("Sovereignty "get the white man out" Movement).. Brah,? Do that mean he gonna' take all his bad white man invention wit' him too, ya? Electricity? Concrete? Cars? Gasoline engine?, Radar? Diesel motor? See where we goin' here Brah? You keep dat crap up, you gonna be left with fish ponds and poi and not a hell of a lot more, ya tink?
This is the virst Video I watching on your channel. You sound very american. Haha. Maybe I stay a little bit longer here and watch more. Thank you for this Video. Greetings from Vienna ^-^ d
If someone bought your apartment and took it over where will you move? You moved- another someone did the same thing, how long can you keep relocating. When do you become depressed, resentful and poverty stricken?
Argh we look like we could be brothers, do you like me have trouble dating in Hawaiii? I left (in part) because it was so hard to find a date there. If you did find one, they were a tourist leaving in a week.
All of the above plus the teenage pregnancy rate, traffic, rain-acid rain, simple minded (stupid ass) people. My sister did rent to many people who couldn't make rent. People take advantage of my sisters good nature.
Not similar at all. 1. Culture is completely different. As well as food. 2. NOTHING poisonous in Hawaii! Florida has snakes, spiders, poisonous plants etc. 3. Florida weather is completely different as far as humidity and hurricanes, floods etc. 4. Beaches are completely different.
I have a job offer in Hawaii and I am really trying to find out if I can afford to live there. You seem to have all the details. Can I please talk with you about my situation? Thank you..Ronnie
Ronnie Bogle an average person to survive out in hawaii as of this year should be making 15 hourly or more. unless you have family or friends to stay with and save up for a good amount of time. hope that helps
hi Jeff! Thank you very much for effort! I live in the beautiful state of Vermont( north east) I am planning on moving to hawaii to work for a plumbing company as A plumber, I have no Idea wich island to go because I will have no problem finding a job! please give me some i Ideas for my field. I have a wife but I am the only one who is working, I will looking for either 1 or 2 bedroom apartment. thank you Jeff!
Great video, not a fan of "Sunglasses eyes", it draws me to them every time, very distracting. I'd recommend maybe a tanning booth with the tiny eye shields so that your eyelids and the surrounding area aren't so pasty. Still. the advice is great. Not knocking the vid for that.
Love your videos. Wish I could move to Hawaii but I have a dog that I love too much. I am an artist and make things by hand. Not sure if I could make a living from that in a place like Hawaii.
Uh no . . . you've got a few things that are not quite right here. People need to be careful listening to someone whos not been here long and talks like they've seen it all.
Not calling you outdated! I think it's awesome you're making youtube videos! However, if you're looking to get more views, subscribers, etc...try not to rant or make such long videos. People today are constantly over stimulated and looking for quick answers. Get to the point and keep it short and simple and then you'll get tons of more views and subscribers!
Janel Hathaway idk what your talking about. I appreciate how he go's into detail and actually tells you how it is. Rather then just making a 3 minute video saying its great and bad.
I understand where Janel is coming from because I often find myself fast fowarding, but hes also giving a lot of information and answering most of the questions everyone has. I may get bored at points in his videos but he has been more helpful than anyone else with my possibility of moving my family to Hawaii and I feel like I can trust hes being 100% honest.
