The issue is, why would you watch a smaller, unknown channel's video when there's an ltt video on the same topic. Not only will the video most likely look better, but they also have a lab to test their stuff with. It's not LTTs fault, and I'm not sure if there's anything they can do about it. It's just a real issue that should be discussed if only to discuss it

One thing people will fail to understand is that "smaller" tech channels also don't have Linus himself which is a big part of the reason that LTT can be simultaneously informative, entertaining, and repeat-watchable. There's a reason that LTT is as big as it is and it is in no small part to the monumental effort that Linus and the entire team put into making the videos entertaining AND informative. Smaller channels will also often look down at using "RU-vid-meta" titles and thumbnails when it has been shown time and time again that it helps to bring viewers in. Those viewers would not stay unless the content itself was great, which it is.

I would still think it unfair to criticize somebody for just DOING a lot. After people die, and history has a chance to remember the parts it wants, we’ll often look back and laud people who looked like they accomplished half of the world’s history in their lifetimes. Even among the living, when we meet someone who has accomplished a lot, we’re impressed, and we wonder if we couldn’t have also done so much if we had made better use of our time. At the end of the day, what the original comment tried to mean doesn’t matter, because it didn’t offer a meaningful criticism of anything other than the mere existence of Linus’ channel. They didn’t say that something Linus is doing makes the landscape difficult for smaller channels. As somebody else pointed out, LTT - as far as we know, and they’ve given us no reason to believe - ain’t buying out smaller channels, or threatening them, or anything. Linus does sometimes say or do something wrong, but nobody has any reason to believe that Linus and his channels consistently work to make life hard for up and coming tech creators. The comment amounted to nothing more than “Linus, how do you feel about existing wrong?” The channel being so big might INDIRECTLY cause problems for smaller creators because of the way the algorithm works, but what actual solution is there to Linus and his team “existing wrong”? For them to do less? For Linus to stop teaching and growing? For him to stop motivating his team? For his team to be less creative, less skillful, in the content they have a hand in making? Should Linus Media Group just stop expanding their ability to cover topics that different employees are passionate about? In the absence of any compelling evidence that Linus and his team are doing anything wrong to hurt other creators, what do people expect them to do to “fix” this? Do less right?

I bet this kind of mindset plagues the platform as a whole and some people are just more quiet about it than others. It’s easier when you’re stagnating and not growing as fast as you envisioned to blame the guy that’s already made it than to accept that you may need to re-evaluate things. Sure, I could’ve blamed big league streamers for me not growing on Twitch, but instead I realized I just needed to change my streaming time to cater to an audience that I have stuff in common with and suddenly growth started up again. Similar to work together to get rich instead of against each other. together as a category instead of being grow grow grow whos successful and how can we make that ours, it runs the risk of deterring creativity or cannibalization.

while I agree with the VAST majority of what Linus said I think their approach to the scheduling and "weekends" thing to be monotone or not well thought out. Simply being a "large company" doesn't exclude you from working weekends and hitting on those notes you say that you miss, this was just the choice he made in how he wants his company to operate. In reality, there isn't much stopping him from changing schedules, besides maybe employee pushback, that would prevent him from covering weekend things or hot topics on the weekend for a quick news release segment. So with regards to that topic, the only reason a small channel has that really small one up on you is just because you choose not to do it rather than your size preventing you from doing it like he is portraying here.

I am surprised they didn't bring up simple over saturation as a problem as well. Tech channels used to be rare, now there are literally thousands of channels competing to provide their audiences with very similar content. If you search for a review of the latest Ryzen CPU you will find hundred of different channels attempting to get your attention. They usually all have the same set design, RGB computer in the background, GPU's on display, a plant for some color, boom arm mic, etc. There is a formula set in the early days that everyone is copying. So it come down to how many different tech channels is someone going to subscribe to, and what separates them? Its going to be the quality of the content and the personality of the channels main 'character'. If someone already follows Linus, Jayztwocents, Paul's Hardware, Gamers Nexus, Hardware Cannuks, Hardware Unboxed, the list is literally endless, why are they going to follow more creators in the same space? That's not even to mention general tech channels like Marques Brownlee, Unbox Therapy, Austin Evans, etc.

You can say Linus earned the right to be lucky, there is an element of truth to it. However, a lot of it was still just plain old dumb luck. The earliest years of the channel were supported by an existing business and Linus didn't have to risk house and home on every video's success while being paid a stable wage by the company that owned the channel at the time. Easier access to products to review also came with the job. He basically landed a paid apprenticeship to being a youtuber, then got to keep his channel and subscribers when he split away from NCIX. Smaller creators, by and large, do *not* get anywhere close to the same kind of security and opportunity he started with, alongside the near-zero competition he enjoyed.

As a smaller tech creator, I have an instance where this kind of happened with me and LTT, but why I don't see it as a big deal. I mostly work with Apple, and I wanted to tackle why Macs aren't seen as viable gaming machines. Certainly part of it was due to Mac being a smaller platform, but I wanted to know if there were more technical reasons I started digging in, and, long story short, there were more reasons than just userbase size. Some of it was Nvidia and Apple's bad split where Nvidia was getting in lawsuits with Intel then attacking mobile graphics and culminating in Apple deciding to cut them out of their hardware and software support. Some of it was with Apple supporting OpenGL for graphics initially rather than Nvidia's proprietary stuff, then Apple switching to their proprietary Metal and not supporting Vulkan. The list goes on and on. After I did all my research and started writing the first draft, I see a video from LTT talking about gaming on the M1 chips and going over many of the same points that I did in my research. I admit, I was kind of bummed by this. Part of me that felt like if I had made that video and posted it on my original timeline, it might have been seen as me copying LTT's video. So I shelved the idea and moved on. With that said, I don't hold it against the LTT team. For one, it was just coincidence inasmuch as the M1 chips were a hot topic at the time. The performance improvements made people want to push the chips and see what had or hadn't improved. For another, there's time in the future where I could pick it back up again. Maybe revisit the topic when newer processors come out or maybe I dig deeper into the historical or technical side of things. There's nothing stopping me or anyone else for that matter from doing that. Something that I picked up from Google Search of all places helps me keep it in context. According to Google, one of the most consistently searched query every year is "how to cook scrambled eggs". Do a quick search and see how many videos and websites have recipes showing you how to make scrambled eggs? Some are very similar but some talk about making it spicy or adding different ingredients. The fact that someone else made a guide to making scrambled eggs, even larger cooking sites/channels, hasn't stopped anyone else from posting their own. Just because LTT, Snazzy, MKBHD, or any other channel does something similar doesn't mean we smaller channels can't have our own takes and perspectives. Just my two cents.

As people we should continue to grow and improve, but as a business far too many aim for infinite growth which can only results in collapse. More businesses need to realise when they've peaked and be happy to just stay there than constantly aim for more. Unfortunately any business with share holders doesn't have that luxury because the whole system is based on infinite growth, despite that being literally impossible.

Honestly the point about how slow they can react to topical news and releases and whatnot is a huge one for smaller tech channels. Depending on their attitude of course and how they approach it, but generally speaking a one person channel can just immediately make a video and has a huge advantage in that sense. Now, wether you tap onto it well enough or not is another question. There are disadvantages of course. People simply won't be as likely to click on a strange video with tiny view counts on anything where you are supposed to trust the author about something, like educational stuff or even reviews etc. Small creators will also not get preview builds and early access to things or things sent to them otherwise, so in that sense you will always be one step behind. It's also much harder to churn out videos at a high rate alone than with a group of people, and in that regard RU-vid standard of quality has risen to a point where crappy videos are probably not going to make it so each video is likely going to take more time. Still, at the end of the day, if you put in the work and are good at editing, writing, etc, there is nothing to stop you from succeeding. Will it take time? Probably yes, but some of that time will likely be you learning the job as well. New channels come along all the time, and when they do they are probably doing something right . If you can also do that, then you have a good chance of growing. You still need to give it time to get the little bit of algorithmic luck too, but stay consistent and keep improving and you are giving yourself the best chance of success.
@cheeseisgreat24
@cheeseisgreat24 Год назад
I also feel like the big mega channels do actually help smaller channels simply in virtue of the fact that if the mega channel does a video, and the smaller channel does a similar but slightly different and intriguing video, you have a much higher chance of having your video being noticed in the suggested videos by the algorithm than if that mega channel simply didn’t exist. It might not be the thing to make you into a mega channel, but I’ve seen far more channels able to at least get a functional, consistent stream of content and some of my friends who started doing that when the analytics could tell you got most of their early successful stream of views off of theirs being suggested content.

I think small creators today are bitter because the algo’s so stacked against them. Clickthrough rate has an outsized influence on how many people see the videos. Like, if the algo throttles the vid after serving it to 100 people because of poor clickthrough, this means the next 1000 that may have been interested won’t see the vid at all. They woukd have to depend on search which is another beast to overcome. That’s why it’s very discouraging for somebody just starting out. Also, for us who forced out a niche and are making a small living, we are in turn forced to stay in the niche because of clickthrough. Which is part of the reason why the days when creators could go from 0 to 1 million subs is over. Having a small channel myself, I don’t have that same angst because I know RU-vid now is a lot more competitive than in 2011, and YT does have an incentive to keep large channels happy on this platform. The rising tide is real and I did benefit from having brand sponsorships thanks to the flak you took. (I rarely comment, but as a small creator doing this for 7 years, this video resonates.)

what you **can** do to make it easier for smaller creators is occasionally doing shoutouts to smaller channels. that's honestly one of my favorite things to see a large creator do: finding and shouting out small channels with sometimes only a few thousand subs who are doing awesome work for you guys, since you're more jack of all trades master of none, as you said, you could shout out channels that go very in-depth on a certain topic when you touch on it a bit but not really in a lot of detail, as a "hey if you wanna learn more these guys do great work check em out"

But they already do, when it actually matters. They won't neglect to mention whoever made themselves interesting enough to be shouted out in the first place - especially on WAN show. I've found myself heading over to a bunch of channels, out of curiosity when nobody told me to "go subscribe because he or she is great" or whatever. Really easy to tire an audience with new introductions as if they were standing around at a networking party and pretending to be interested in everyone - as more and more people keep dropping in. A bit dramatic but, ya know. If LTT would (for example) shoutout smaller creators at the end of their videos, the impulse for the average viewer would be to just drop out, because most people want to see LTT content when they reach for a LTT video. A foolproof waste of money and resources if they didn't invest in a larger, more entertaining segment. That'd be interesting. In the end, that's just my own two cents. I don't condemn your idea in theory - I'd love for that to hold up in the long run, but i also feel it'd possibly chip away at the respect people have for LTT, like, for how well they understand and value the time they take from their viewers, and how much that has been given back in form of relevant content.

My actual only criticism of LLT as a concept is that LTT became the HR department for OTHER tech companies. It feels like that all other tech businesses just flat out don't do anything good until LTT makes a big stink about it. And the entire tech culture is basically: "what financial move can we make before we show up on "HR's" (LTT's) radar." The same benefits of LTT being the voice of the people are the same drawbacks as a Union. And if LTT ever gets corrupted (highly unlikely) I feel we will all see a dip in ethics in tech.

As someone who's helped produce media for television in Canada, I can tell you for a fact that the CRTC is a huge reason Canadian content producers even existed in that realm and weren't just swallowed by their much larger, richer and more well-equipped American counterparts. While the RU-vid landscape may appear more fair, juggernauts exist who have more staff, higher production budgets and who's hours of content produced can exceed the number of hours there are in a day. That is a significant barrier to be faced by a new content creator in the same space. I see comments saying other creators just need to "pull themselves up from their bootstraps". However, when those creators do deep dive videos that took months of work, were paid out of pocket, and had no sponsorships or free gear only to get 1% of the views that a daily TechQuickie skimming the headlines does, I think the little fish might have some justifiable grievances with the whales monopolizing all the eyeballs.

Instead i found alot of small tech-youtubers, who focused on these "niches", may it be monitors etc. which are less "popular". It's all about the content. What you put out there. If you don't have good videos with great content you aren't going anywhere. If you have something of value that is helpful to others... You will! It really is that simple. Most of the difference is the grind and work that goes in to it. It's a rough, long slog churning out videos. It isn't easy and most simply burnout before the next person. Linus is where he is because he has grinded for over a decade producing at least a video every single day. That is insane! He obviously just loves making videos beyond anything else. If you are doing RU-vid for money... just find another job it isn't worth it. I'm still not sure I can sustain myself and family, so I still work a day job. The one thing I can see from the other side is that the size of LTT is "problematic" to smaller tech channels because people tend to follow the larger number because they believe its "better" a way to compare that is when buying an item online, people look at reviews of two very similar items, theyll pick the one with the more reviews despite because if everyone buying it why not? That translates to "why watch the smaller creator when LTT exists? The audience isnt spread out, everyone watches them" theres no need to apologize for the success of LTT thats the dream goal to reach to be that big but I can see from the other side how it would feel that LTT is disruptive to smaller non associated channel growth

LTT could start giving shout outs to the sources they get their content from??? I've seen dozens of niche content over the years when building gaming arcades, retro consoles to modern TV's, sim racing, projector related stuff, etc. Then your channel come out with similar content, miraculously knowing how to build these niche setups without a hiccup. We know YOUR team searches these smaller Tech channels when trying to make content for YOUR channel. But ya'll play it off as if it was ya'lls idea. Just give a shout out from where you got the idea is all we're asking. I mean if these smaller TechTubers die then how will that help this channel grow? You would want then to keep making content and discoveries so that YOU the bigger channel can share them. Instead you have your goons go out on the internet and pick the fruit from the field and bring them to us as if you put in the work and discovery of that fruit. Yet LTT is like. "Well what do you want us to do". Give credit!

RU-vid is a union to itself, but it doesn’t want us to unionize outside of our channels all the time. Meaning, you can have a secondary channel with someone with someone else as host, but you can’t have your own channel and go years and years being co-host in the same channel. It is channel that is being paid and not the crew that is in it. Since you have 7 channels to yourselves, each channel is being paid very well for the content that is uploaded separately. Each of them has their own analytics, but it all comes your way the same compared to one channel. It is so rare to collaborate with another person and another channel in the same physical room than having individual rooms with each their own channel’s made for each individual person or group. And that is where people struggle to actually understand to manage their money as more and more channels are being made by one person or a group of people in a broad scale. Because if everyone has multiple channels that pays, everyone would be rich off their multiple channels, but each and everyone of these youtubers starting off in life would struggle with finances in more ways than one as a lot of people start off very young and inexperienced in the platform. And do know that times when you guys have started your channels are not the same as what people nowadays are starting with. The policies were not as hectic in the late 2000’s than policies that contradict themselves today.

It's kind of like when humans expanded into a new area, life is rough for the early pioneers. They have to build things up from scratch, trying out different things to find out what works. Once one of them finds the right recipe for success, and starts to really build up a community, it's kind of natural they are the ones reaping the majority of the benefits of their work. Then you have new people come in, seeing that all the hard work was done, and think they can just take over a chunk of the land the pioneers built up and get all the profits off it. It doesn't work that way, in many ways it's harder for a new person to force their way into an established space than it was for the original pioneers to build it up-you basically have to wage war on the established group(s), or else find something they didn't do well and find out how to do that better. It's innovate something better than already exists, or find some ground that was left untouched (meaning, don't think you can get into the tech blogger sphere doing the same thing as established groups have been doing for years and somehow build up a community of your own). The first companies to start building settlements on mars are going to be the de-facto rulers when later groups come in and want to utilize resources that were developed by the first groups. Unless the other groups can find a suitable patch of land that's untouched and start their own colony without any help from the first settlement, they are going to have to suck it up and deal with not having control/power
