You cant make a fair judgement of prices just by shopping at the mall, Lusaka is a fairly large city you need to move around and have different shopping experiences. Shoprite used to be cheap some years back but has become a little expensive due to inflation so majority locals don't entirely get everything from the malls.

Remember this is a landlocked country. Stuff costs a lot to go out and come in. It is that simple. If you are Kenya or Tanzania, once imports arrive at the ports, that's it. We pay a premium for transport from Durban, Walvis Bay, Dar-es-Salaam. Things just have to be more expensive in Zambia. It is simple economics.
@cklaus3326
@cklaus3326 2 года назад
We need to produce more so that we do not depend on imports, I am positive Zambia can do it. I am a Zambian living in Germany, it is simple things that really make Germany tick because they do not have much resources as we do, unfavourable weather but still there is enough farm produce, with a bit of organic products from Uganda, Kenya Egypt, if we are landlicked we need to make our road network better. Allocate and use taxes properly, trade agreements between with other countries should be favourable...that may help our economic indicators to look better. I see that the exchange rate is reducing and people are excited because we depend on imports.
@cklaus3326
@cklaus3326 2 года назад
Including solar, Germany and Sweden for example are using more solar in comparison to us with so much sunlight...and still struggling with load shading...we need to promote our own, we also need better international trade relations. The EU works for it's people in the country member states, including outside if the EU AU on the other hand, I am not sure... We have great minds in Zambia but our leaders need to be accountable...food should not be too expensive for anyone to afford...food is not a luxury but a necessity a fundamental right like education.

The Shoping mall is nice, but a bit expensive like many malls across the continent owing to the fact most of the goods sold there are imported. This is an opportunity to develop a network of local industries to complete the value chain and create jobs.
@cklaus3326

I totally agree with you...localisation. our counterparts buy their own products, I can talk about Germany because I am very familiar with the system, they buy their own products. They promote each other in the EU. Create more jobs get rid of the colonial mentality thinking imported stuff is better.

Recently visited a nice mall called Karen hub in Nairobi Kenya 🇰🇪. It's quiet expensive but I guess I couldn't judge how expensive Nairobi bases on that mall alone because Nairobi is very big. Tha same can be said with east park in lusaka, it's quiet expensive but lusaka has some really cheap places because it's fairly a large city too. By the way I enjoyed my stay in Kenya, Nairobi is well developed.

Mom you have gone to the most expensive place. You cannot rate the cost of living in Zambia from east park more, the place is too expensive. Get down to the native shops, indian shops, streets, common markets, chacha road and freedom way. These are places where a common man buys their daily food. Come see for yourself, Zambia is a nice place to live, stay and we're very peaceful, no chicken fights on the streets and no xenophobia like some neighbouring countries. We are so peaceful such that people run to see what is happening where they have heard the sound of a gun shot. The reason is simple such are very rare occurrences. Illegal immigrants hide in petroleum tanks just to get to this beautiful hub of Southern Africa, the Land of Milk and Honey 🍯.

I guess Lusaka is relatively cheap compared to Kenya. I visited Kenya last year and the same year saw my friend who lives in Lusaka. I did not spend that much compared to what I paid in Kenya. Here in America, I'm used to the $ and my first time visiting Africa, was thinking that Africa was cheap, but to my surprise, things were costly
@andrewngumunyu3730
@andrewngumunyu3730 2 года назад
Africa can be very cheap/affordable or quite costly depending on where you shop. In Kenya for example a Pineapple in a supermarket can cost upwards of $2.5 while in a local market it costs less than $0.8. Eating out in a fancy restaurant you end up spending upwards $20 per meal, while if you eat at the local food stalls you easily spend less than $2 per meal. I can go on and on about the disparities in pricing. It all depends on the location. Most visitors/tourists tend to patronize the fancy areas where prices are inflated

We have "Shoprite Select" which has a better standard than the regular SA Shoprite or Checkers. I am yet to see a Shoprite Select in SA. Shoprite Select on standards is better than Zambian or SA Pick N Pay or Spar. Mostly competes with that standard of Woolworth or Food Lovers

It's expensive because the country is running on Chiluba's Kaboba economics that turned everyone into a subsistence Marketeer and Investors took over local industries and supply chains, raised prices by 200% because they are out to make a profit. The regulations were non-existent in the last 25 years and this is the result. Most people have home gardens, are homesteaders, have farms or know a farmer which removes the need for uncomfortable Soweto Market, which is why the produce there goes to waste. Visiting farmers and buying from their markets would've been a better experience.

YES but a strong currency can be a negative if Yr economy is export led but beneficial if Yr economy is import driven. However, an exchange rate must just be healthy. Imagine if government was getting 6 billion USD from sale of minerals in 2020 when currency was 22 to 1 USD ,it means that more money was received in kwacha about 132 billion compared to now when rate is 15. Lost revenue amounts to 42 billion kwacha. But if the appreciation of currency increases economic activities then a boom in the economy will outweigh the loss In form of increased taxes to state. A high exchange rate in 3rd world will often reduce government revenues. A balance is needed.

@user-vw6bk4pb4l 2 года назад
That's not entirely true. Most things here come from farms and factories in South Africa. Being landlocked barely explains our over-dependency. And don't forget the impact of the PF government which messed up our economy, for a decade. 😭 With our new government, hopefully, we'll soon be back on track and prices will normalise. But things are quite bad, and it'll take time.

I was in Lusaka in august last year and i had feeling that Lusaka is really expensive comparing to zambians salaries. Even in comparison to my country (Poland) prices were pretty high. That time 1 złoty (polish currency) was almost 5 kwacha. Nowadays it's about 3,2 kwacha and it makes Lusaka even more expensive from my point of view
@MTAautomotive

It's really expensive also compared with European salaries... with 2400 kwacha you can buy a cellphone 📱 of low quality, the one in Europe is for free.The network isn't working well and it's expensise... still there're frequently powercuts and you pay the electricity for the 230 volts but... are they really 230???Ulendo is expensive compared with South America uber , and the cars are often spoiled and dirties...The local food is nice like the people, abd not expensive but 'cause it's local...

Zambia is expensive. Both transport and food. I live and work on Lusaka, the assumed currency gain and the nonexistent price adjustments make things very expensive. For example a loaf of bread in 2021 august when the Kwacha was 1:22 with the USD was K15 Fast forward to 2022, the Kwacha is 1:15.20 but bread still costs the same.

Bread price is solely determined by wheat prices. If Lusaka imports wheat then bread prices will fall with a stronger kwacha but if wheat is sourced locally I think prices will remain same
@makeitknown8064
@makeitknown8064 2 года назад
@@georgepresley5120 please note i used bread as an example but if you go on ground, you will see that prices of food stuffs has remained constant despite the local currency appreciating in value. Africa is loaded with high quality fruit, veggies and greens. If you are sick or want to get healthier...eat fruit, veggies and greens and stay away from anything animal related. Some cooked rice, potatoes and beans are ok every now and then. Some nuts are ok every now and then. If you desperately need some meat, have some fish. Overall you feel with a lot more energy, and a positive mindset. Another (huge) "trick" health-wise is the water fast. Water fast helps tremendously, and there is a ton of literature about it on the internet on how to do it, for how long or when...however, it should not be done for more than 4-5 days in the absence of a water fast expert, unless you are an expert yourself. If you can water fast for 1 day each week you are already doing great things for your health and if you eat mainly fruit, veggies, greens, rice, potatoes and beans you are going to feel very, very well. Keep in mind, in the absence of animal products your stomach will be empty most of the time...don't confuse an empty stomach with hunger. If you have energy and feel good...it means you are full and not hungry. Good luck and good health to you, my dear friend!

No you are not broke, Lusaka is generally expensive in light/perspective of the currency and prices you are used to... especially now because there hasn't been a change in prices however much the kwacha has gained. So you get less money from exchanging your dollars, but you still spend a lot. When I just came here from Uganda, I used to hardly buy things because of the difference in prices here and back home... everything was just very expensive hehe but with time I learnt to put the calculator down 😆😆😆 and stop comparing prices here otherwise I was never going to buy a thing

And for food, fruits and vegetables, the supermarkets are way more expensive than the streets so it could be that you are staying in an expensive neighbourhood where they sell things at higher prices.
