Is Mechanical Engineering worth it in 2021? The technology and workplace landscape is shifting rapidly for a lot of people and the roles of Mechanical Engineers are shifting along with it. What is the future for a major whose dedication to physical objects is entering a digital world.
In this video I describe the pros, cons, and experiences I've had with college / university along with my experience a year into the workforce. Join me on my freeform discussion!
I'll go over what work looks like, what mechanical engineers get paid (Salary), and the unfair advantages in critical thinking that lead mechanical engineers to success.

It seems pretty daunting but at 33 I’m enrolling into a mechanical engineering program. I’m pretty certain this is the correct place for me. My math is laughable but I love problem solving and mechanical things.

Thanks man dope video. Ive been debating between going into mechanical engendered and software engineering but i have always been leaning more to mechanical engineering.

Thanks man! Ive been a welder for about 7-8 years. I have my Associates of Science degree in Welding and am currently going to school for my BS in mechanical engineering. And am looking for a path. I love the idea of solar systems, alternative energy.

Don't know how I got reccomended this, but yay! I am a mechanical engineer about to graduate. A lot of this rings true with my experience and I found it really useful looking forward into my future.

@@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx1127 ya actually. But almost everyone in asia is doing CSE. I mean it is pretty much higher than any other major. At least in my country. currently, employment rate of mechanical engineers right after graduation is considerably low. (idk about europe) since lot of cs students are graduating it is not very clear what will happen to the cs job field near future. Will its fate become same as that of mechanical field........ Im very fond of robotics. idk what i should choose mechanical or cse!

I agree about the statement about its verstality. I graduated in june with a double major in a Bachelors in Mechanical and Biomedical Enginnering and currently working as a battery testing engineer for one of the big automotive company. Im currently thinking of pursuing a masters in electrical engineering just to sharpen my industry knowledge about EVs but still not 100% sure.

Computer science is a very different industry than mechanical engineering. In my opinion, mechanical engineering offers a lot more opportunity for hands on work and a lot more opportunity for interesting work. Ya, computers can pay well, but in the end, you'll be coding all day. Mechanical engineering you can be building the world of tomorrow, be that air planes, trains, cars, buildings, technology, industrial sites, products. I think the rewarding nature of that, far, far exceeds anything in the digital realm. But again, that is just MY opinion.

Hi man! I’m looking for a mechanical engineer to ask some random questions about a build I’m working on. I’m building a production cart with wheels that spring down. I’m not sure how to go about it. Would you be willing to look at what I’m doing?

MEs learn concepts that have been around for 130 plus years. That's not a necessarily bad thing. Those concepts are still valid and won't go away unlike that latest programming software or communication protocol. I graduated in 1996 and have been working as an ME ever since as an industrial machine designer. I dont design the product. I design the machine that makes the product.

What would you tell someone considering going back for a masters in mechanical engineering? I have a hard time with computers and get easily frustrated with any programming I would do? How do I fix that?
@Enginomics
@Enginomics 3 года назад
I can only speak from what I've heard from other people and still only have an undergrad. That said, if you think a masters degree will propel you into a position or skillset that you want to have in the future, I know that a masters can be a powerful tool. You don't necessarily need to focus on computer science or programming and can focus more on mechanical engineering or business (MBA). Also I know some companies do pay for additional schooling or education so be on the lookout for that so you wouldn't have to pay for the whole thing yourself. Hope that helps!

You mentioned average Eng grad earns about 65k a year, is that in USD or CAD$?
@stitious8029
@stitious8029 2 года назад
Do you believe that getting a masters in computer science or electrical/computer combination would be beneficial with a bachelors in ME? Thanks!
@stitious8029
@stitious8029 2 года назад
I have the option to do a 4+1 program which allows me to get my masters in 1 year. This would cost another 30k on top of my undergrad. I do see myself starting a company in the future, but I do like the idea of a supervisory role in engineering. I was wondering what the pros/cons would be if you have any suggestions. Thanks again.
@Enginomics
@Enginomics 2 года назад
Thanks for the question! I heard of one year masters programs being beneficial to a lot of people who want to hone some skills before entering the industry so that's a pro. If you're looking into doing a more supervisory role in the future, you might consider looking into an business MBA in like 5 to 10 years which would give you the qualifications for a more managerial role. That said, 30k is a lot on top of any undergrad debt you have and from my experience as an intro level ME employee, they only sometimes differentiate you enough to be worth it. If you're absolutely not trying to do anything mechanical related and want to shift towards computers and CS, I'd say do it. But if you think you're going to go back to engineering management in a few years, then it might just be better to get an extra year of industry experience under your belt.

Not true in Singapore. Mech engin is quite dead here. Probably only good for maintenance related jobs. But not good enough for specialised high paying jobs.
@merritt2014

Yeah one of my favorite aspects of this field is being able to work pretty much anywhere instead of having to look to major cities to find jobs. I can go to a lower cost of living town and still find good paying positions that need an ME.

do you have reccomended affordable laptops for mech. engineering ?
@Enginomics
@Enginomics 3 года назад
Personally I used a Surface Book 2 but that's not necessarily affordable. I would look primarily at a PC laptop for most of the programs you'd be using. Additionally, I'd try and find something with some decent processing power (Intel i5 processor or above) and a decent video card so you can run CAD on your personal laptop. It's nice to be able to work on designs in your dorm rather than having to go to an engineering library. Hope that helps

Can a mechanical engineer work on electronic circuits? Can a mechanical engineer be a mechatronics engineer?
@merritt2014
@merritt2014 Год назад
Yeah, even though I went into mechanical, I decent portion of my program was learning basics of electrical circuits and mechatronics. The nice thing about ME specifically is that you get introduced to so many different applications instead of just focusing on one in particular. It's probably the best program to get into if you want to technical work but don't know exactly what u want to specialize in.

first ones to be layed off in an economic setback. as you get older you do not have the energy to run things due to burnouts unless you did not have to chance to get a management role. once you get into management you have to constantly lie to keep things going. this is how the traditional industry works if you feel stuck in a role do not hesitate to change it, you are f.cked up anyways . good skills built tho
