Is Medicaid Coverage Better or Worse than Private Insurance?

Healthcare Triage

It’s clearly, provably better for patients to have Medicaid coverage than to be uninsured, despite what critics of the program claim. Recently, bills in the Senate and the House of Representatives have sought to greatly reduce Medicaid funding and coverage, partially justified by these claims. But is having Medicaid, as those critics also say, much worse than having private insurance?

The problem is that a huge numbers of providers don't accept medicaid. In effect this makes it so you have to wait much longer for an appointment and for a specialist you might have to drive much further.
@ems7623

The problem with Medicaid in most places is the incredibly small number of providers who will accept it. In some medical specialities - such as outpatient psychiatry - this means that patients can not get any access to providers.

The bottom line is, it depends upon the person, healthy or sickly , responsible for their health or not. Funding by private or public insurance may have little effect on the outcomes of treatment. People who have emphasized preventive measures will most likely be responsible and have control of what happens to their health.

Great video! I'm not sure if you guys have made a video on this before, but I would love a video on a sort of 'ideal' US healthcare system. I'm not sure one exists, or if it exists, if it could be statistically proven to be the best (I imagine the criterion for 'best is subject to debate). The NPR radio show planet money made an episode on ten or so changes to the tax code with bipartisan support. They didn't interview politicians but economists who identified with different segments of the political spectrum. That is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series because I think it outlines many practical, reliable changes which have arguments based on data and principles independent of political affiliation. Anyway, I loved the episode. You guys and gals are the best.

As others have stated it varies from state to state. I live in Louisiana and about 10 years ago I applied for Medicaid (I was one of the working poor) and I was told I had to be disabled for one year to qualify. On the other hand, my cousin's wife has never worked and she got Medicaid on the spot when she went into the hospital for an emergency situation.

If I had to go onto a private plan I would become bed bound, and probably lose several years of life, from being unable to get my medication since I make near no money. Medicaid sucks hard, I can't get most types of specialists to see me and pay out of pocket for office visits (thankfully I've known them for years so they charge me the minimum and write me off as charity care), BUT I can get ALL of my chemo therapies I need for my autoimmune disorders for FREE along with all the other prescriptions I need.

Absolutely everyone I know on Medicaid says that it's the worst medical program ever. A simple HSA with a few thousand dollars would be better. For dental coverage, for example, only extractions are covered. When people find out that they're stuck with Medicaid, many don't even renew because most doctors, clinics, and many hospitals won't take it.

@amethy1616
@amethy1616 4 года назад
Paul Lo Cicero I never said anything about the increase in taxes. I was referring to the cost of private owned insurance. If you choose to get something in the private sector you are paying a deductible on top of your taxes(because you are going to pay tax regardless of your healthcare status) therefore costing you more. That is what the original comment was inferring by “free”. It makes perfect sense, you just can’t put two and two together, I guess.

I think you are missing something. Not all care helps people: primary care has measurable impact. The rest, while it surely helps, has no measurable impact on the health of large numbers of people. I would argue that insurance, even Medicaid coverage, improves health ONLY to the extent that it improves primary care access. Of course, primary care has no credibility without secondary and tertiary care. Perhaps the zero cost sharing should be limited to primary care, at least for low income people.

HEALTH CARE : Europe vs America WHATS IN IT FOR THE GOVERNMENTs and THE PATIENTS and why EU WINS European system costs 11% of GDP against 19% in the USA EU HEALTH CARE IS ALL INCLUDED THE USA NOT USA life expectancy is 42th in the world on the world ratings. WHATS IN IT FOR THE EU PATIENT? If you pay taxes, as an individual, and contribute to the central government “POT” (the community POT of money). You are covered for all treatment, hospital costs, surgery, drugs, implants, chemo, post op therapies, cost of prescribed drugs, specialist and normal GP doctors bills, specialist bills etc etc. (There are some small exceptions.) You dont have to look at the small print of coverage. Its all included, pocket your credit card.. you dont need it. You dont have to pay in advance NO Paperwork The system is rated as better than the American system as nobody is excluded and the system covers 99% of all patient needs. THE EUROPEAN SYSTEM: HOW IT WORKS: All european health systems are government run and are simple systems . It is a central, run by the govenment covering all healthcare needs for the population and is non profit , universal, and also internationally recognised between all EU countries. The EU underlying system is through fiscal residency of a person, (ie you pay into the employment tax system of the country you live and into health system, if you are registered or unemployed you are covered) Simply put, each person pays into the THE GOVENMENT POT as a % of individual pay packet contributions where you are employed Importantly even if you are unemployed, but registered, you control illegal immigration. Illegals get no benefits, unless humanitarian emergency. Importantly you are still covered. you as a patient get equal rights and coverage across Europe. The EU system is state run, and covers everyone, from birth to death and costs half of the USA system. Therefore in the USA a % of the health cost is based on profit to be paid out in dividends. Additionallly not all people in the USA are covered, (approximately 15%) Its a Bum deal for Americans. It costs 8-9% of GDP more than Europe HOW IT IS MANAGED: In America USA, the health system is profit run for the most part and privately handled. Patient care is secondary to profit for 50% of coverage. The European state (country) is the employer of all health staff, doctors, nurses, etc. Central government then covers the hospitals costs through a system which keeps the hospitals covered for the expenses of each patient. If we compare the EU to the USA structure in terms of cost to GDP, Europe average 11% of GDP to the USA 20% of GDP, (2019) with the EU at 99% coverage and with improved life expectancy rate, compared to the USA. Central Government in each country collects the money through the taxes you pay as a citizen, and redistributes it (generally) to regions ,hospitals, and doctors etc which then distributes the funds to the health system used by the patient. The Government also allows the private sector to operate under the public system, to build hospitals, run them privately. Each country allows this in different rules, like Germany/UK/France etc. They are then licence them to operate by the government. But importantly, the patient who pays to the state contributions through his salary, has equal rights to access all hospitals. 10-15 % of the EU health system is private If you wish to pay an additional supplement to the state system, you are allowed to do this into to the private scheme on top of your mandatory state payments so you get private health care coverage. But you cannot opt out of the central system or add to it. Most of people dont have the means or desire to pay private insurance policies. So the state system is better for them. WHATS THE BENEFIT Basically the EU system covers 99% of people and costs the half of the USA system. In addition to this, with the EU system, if you pay contributions to the health system in the UK or France, you can have full medical care in other countries , Germany, Italy, Hungary or any other of the 27 states etc. If you lose your job, you will still be covered. you just pay less to the system as unemployment reimbusement to you is less, so you pay less, but the more you earn at work, the more you contribute to the central system. Its based on % of earnings. These European systems are based on the old and original UK system, The National Health Service, abbreviated to NHS, was launched by the then Minister of Health in Attlee's post-war government, Aneurin Bevan, at the Park Hospital in Manchester. Aneurin Bevan, Minister of Health, on the first day of the National Health Service, 5 July 1948 at Park Hospital, Davyhulme, near Manchester. THE REAL ISSUE 1. EU Health is non political, non profit, more efficient and cheaper that the USA system, 2. BETTER in many ways, as the patient is first, and health has no “profit COST”. 3. It reduces the cost to the Government. (11% against the USA 20% per year GDP) 4. Its not fragmented. Its coverage is national, and for all. 5. If you are REGISTERED as a TAX payer, you have no problems. 6. If you are clandestine, then you get some emergency humanitarian services only. Thus the authorities know who you are and send you home after. Thanks for the comments!!!!

I was told if you're on medicade or medicare the doctors by law have to accept your business for less profit. I have a theory that they overlook several things and try to do the bare minimum in order to profit the most because they aren't able to upsale procedures therefore they could be overlooking rare medical conditions. Fair enough, you get what you pay for but.... If patience knew that doctors are actively cutting out treatment that could save your life they would probably be more proactive...

Medicaid is good if you can find a quality provider, in some states it's impossible but in others the coverage is almost as good as private plans. Also, Medicaid promotes intergenerational poverty by snatching property, usually from people of color. As long as health care is a business in the U.S. we will have walmartization of health.

As a long time healthcare worker in an ER, I see Medicaid patients repeatedly abuse the system by using the emergency room as their primary care physician. Working in a free standing ER, we estimated that nearly 70% of the patients we saw were Medicaid and well over 50% of those visits were not emergencies in any stretch of any imagination. We saw people bring a baby in because he was 'fussy' (that's what babies do!). Another came in to the ER because they had pimples. Another came in with wrist pain after playing with their fidget spinner for the entire day. The lack of cost sharing results in frequent, unnecessary ER visits and abuses the system and takes away from the patients who are truly emergent. The current system is a mess and a large percentage of people abuse it because there isn't cost sharing. Even a $10-20 copay would make people think about it a little and use some common sense in obtaining their care.

Roger Hardy tell me about it!!! I worked in the pharmacy in the past and we always had fucking refugees, same people coming in every week for the same thing, cough and fever and their prescriptions are always from the ER. Like the fuck. They go for every little things even mild headaches.

@roger80465 6 лет назад
Christine Dinh While refugees/illegals were certainly part of the mix, it was a larger percentage of millennials who were just too lazy to see a primary care. In addition, it cost them more than going to the ER. That's a major reason Medicaid is so screwed up.

I don’t care if people need Medicaid. I work in healthcare. But I can’t afford preventative care with a $6000 deductible. But Medicaid and indigent patients will come in for three MRI scans at a time. They come in constantly. And there’s nothing wrong with them. Why is it fair that I work so others can have healthcare when I can’t afford it for myself? I’m the lost middle class worker. No one does Healthcare Triage videos addressing this... And I’m not a conservative. And I’m not a liberal. I’m a human being trying to get by.

Cost sharing caries absolutely no benefit to the patient. It is a fee plain and simple. We need to put a bullet in the head of the idea that cost sharing is somehow good for the patient. Its benefits are purely for the insurance company.
@ExPwner

No, its benefits are for the market. People who understand even an iota of economics can look at the association of higher costs and higher reliance on third party payment. I swear you people have no self-awareness.

HEALTH CARE : Europe vs America WHATS IN IT FOR THE GOVERNMENTs and THE PATIENTS and why EUROPE WINS European system costs 11% of GDP against 19% in the USA EU HEALTH CARE IS ALL INCLUDED THE USA NOT & WHY SO COMPLICATED??? USA life expectancy is 42th in the world on the world ratings.

Though I didn't vote for Trump but I do favor the repeal act.... not necessarily the one in the senate though. We need to balance the federal/state budgets at any cost and given the issues with China, Russia, Iran, and N. Korea... I don't think it too wise to defund the military (though, since we do spend more than any other country, we could probably cut back a bit).
