I sense sympathy fatigue from even the most liberal Europeans. Taking on too many illegal immigrants, too quickly is logically unsustainable and threatens to sink the entire ship...w/ every citizen on it.

It is not necessarily amongst the left voters (as at the very least I personally can attest to), but sadly seems to be so amongst the parties. I've talked to many people on this issue and it really a big one. It splits the mind. You wish to be kind, and welcoming to anyone wishing to be and do well. Yet you will also accept wrongdoers through that same process, nigh unavoidable. Is that a necessary evil or is there a mitigation without being a police state? (or some other iron fisted system)

I personally don't think it's a merit/need issue. It's an issue of practicality. If young people with degrees and the support of their families are struggling to house themselves, an illegal migrant from a third world country with no education/skills suitable for an advanced economy is doomed to fail to secure independence.

You've got to feed your own first, and I think everyone understands that. But when you can share, you absolutely should. I think most has been raised with this mentality, so it should apply here as well. But that doesn't answer the base question here: How do we welcome those that mean well, and not those who do not? The number of migrants is only going to keep rising. This is no question, so we all know and understand this is a pressing matter. Simply "building our walls" and keeping all outside is being a bystander to tragedy while we could have at least tried to help some of them. Not doing so risks major civil unrest, economic hardships, etc. We've all heard the horror stories. There isn't a good answer here.

I'm also in London, so I can only sympathise with you. I became homeless in Tower Hamlets and was told by my support worker (mixed race) that I was the wrong sex and colour to get any sort of help. I've worked since I was 16, paid hundreds of thousands of £ in tax and I would only be housed and cared for once all the migrant families had been sorted. Feeling like a stranger in your home town, is one thing, but paying for the privilege of being ignored is nauseating. What do we do to fix this?
