And while we’re talking Mixed Representation, let’s recognize that not all Mixed Filipinos have the same experiences. Black Filipinos do not fit into Westend standards of beauty and may often face colorism and anti-blackness within the Filipino community. This video aims to open up the conversation on how we can continue working towards authentic representation that includes a diverse understanding of what it means to be Filipino. We would LOVE to hear your comments and feedback on this content!

As a black Filipino I'll definitely confirm that not all mixed Filipinos has the same experiences. At all. The issue of anti-blackness and "white worship" among Filipinos always strikes me. To the point where I usually feel more comfortable in black spaces than Filipino ones. But the preference for mixed Filipinos isn't a strictly Hollywood phenomenon. It's always wild to me how many mixed Filipinos there are on *Filipino* TV. You can even see it with the popularity of mixed Filipino youtubers. It's almost like one of the easiest ways to become a successful actor/celebrity in the Philippines is to just be mixed with white (this won't work if you're black lmao sorry). It's parallel to the rampant colorism that we see in Filipino media as well and I think it's all bound up with the legacy of colonialism. That said, it is very exciting to see more visible Filipinos of all kinds. There's a cultural shift going on now so I think we'll see a more and more inclusive representation as we move forward. And big shoutout to black Filipinos like Steve Lacy, Guapdad, Toro y Moi, HER, and Asia Jackson.

This is completely true, even among pure brown Filipinos. We all ideally want to look white specially during the early 2000's. The heavily commercialized whitening products from KR, JP and China doesn't help at all considering that we Filipinos are big fans of medias from the said countries from Kpop, Kdramas, Anime to Videogames and etc. Though fortunately, I am glad that for the past few years here in the Philippines the "Morena" trend is helping Filipinos slowly embrace their natural brown/darker complexions in a more empowering way. YAY to Diversity! Yay to realistic beauty standards!

I definitely agree with the colorism problem in Asia specifically in the Philippines. The preference for whiteness isn't a new idea and has always been there before Europeans came. I'm 1/4 Pinay and my cousins are also mix. I was teased a lot for being too pale and was nickname "multo" and said I was related to the "white lady". But we saw the difference how we are treated after returning to the US compared to living in the Philippines. In the US we were made to choose sides. It wasn't just about color but also race and culture. Even my cousins who are half black felt uncomfortable when they were told they weren't black enough. At home we didn't really pick one culture. It's not either or but we're all of it. So, yes, we all have different experience.

@@kirksander it's sad that it needs to be trendy for pinoys to accept their native features. Filipinos are beautiful but everyone wants to look like a foreigner with light skin and don't want to have the "pango nose". My grandma is morena compared to her sisters. She was teased for it and said she looked like a farmer. Mentalities like that is still ongoing . Things won't change when pinoys attach skin color to social status. Just like how pinoys elevate those who speak English while calling others "bobo" for having broken English. The problem lies within the people.

I'm surprised that Paolo Montalban wasn't mentioned. He was popular in the 90s for playing the Prince in Cinderella and Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat: Conquest and he's not mixed if it matters.

Filipinos are already mixed with Formosan/Native Taiwanese bloodlines, Chinese loan words, Chinese bloodlines, Chinese Dishes. Spanish language, food, and bloodlines again. distant related bloodlines and language coming from Sri Vijaya. Extremely close ties to the Malaysia,Bruneian, Indonesian cultures. Even links to India, the Cham people of the South East Asia, the surrounding influence of the Majapahit Empire. The beauty of Filipinos is our mix that can vary from one place to the next.

We should actually.....be more compared to Indonesia. Around 10% of their language relates to Filipino dialects more than any other adopted language in the Philippines.

Disney should’ve just made Gabriella Filipino in High School Musical. Her being Latina wasn’t a huge part of the story, but would’ve gotten points for representation, we’re in the right direction seeing more Filipino stories in Hollywood.

Because pinoys don't patronize their own. Just look at foreign vloggers going viral for showing the Philippines while Filipinos who the same don't get much traction. Anyway, what does a Filipino look like?? You can't stereotype the Filipino look. We look ambiguous. Pure or mixed, it is how you represent your culture. You can be the most "Filipino looking" and not have the values or vice versa. Also, immigrant Filipino parents would rather push their kids to have careers that are stable. They didn't migrate to the US so their kid can be a comedian (Jokoy talks about this). How many pinoys do you know that are actors? I'm 1/4 Pinay and my Filipino side are either in the medical industry or engineering. My mom and her siblings are either doctors or lawyers.

Also maybe Hollywood or Americans accept half Filipinos, because some are or usually are half Americans or American citizens. I think they still think of them as american somehow. Also my sister said that out of all the races and nationalities in the world, it would be hard to get the attention of hollywood to the point that they make a filipino film with filipino stories and with pure filipino casts even homegrown filipinos. I'm looking forward to the day that a home grown filipino and a pure one, be cast as a pure filipino in a lead role in Hollywood. And also bring our filipino movies there and hopefully be picked and nominated in the Oscars, specially If the movies we made deserved it.

colorism is problem for filipina women....but for filipino men, brown filipino men are dominating the Music industry today.... Zack Tabudlo is brown filipino man singer and he now as 100 million views.. Skusta Clee is also a brown filipino man singer and is also getting 100 million views...

Filipinos need to learn not to accept those "Filipinos" who: -are mixed -were born and raised in a foreign country -don't even bother to learn Philippines' culture and language at all and those who -neglect their Filipino roots. As a Filipino myself, I'm not claiming Bruno Mars, Vanessa Hudgens, Olivia Rodrigo and many more half ass Filo celebrities. I don't understand the need to be proud of them just because we at least share same drop of ethnicity. I believe that we all have the freedom to choose where we belong and in topics like these, your heart can't be in two places at once. And these Hollywood celebs didn't choose being a Filipino and it's also fine.

a lot of these artists recognize their filipino heritage. It's unjust to ignore them simply because they weren't born and/or raised in the Philippines. Take this example: A couple with one child born and raised in the Philippines. This couple immigrates to a foreign country yet uphold their Filipino traditions in the home. Now; they give birth to a new child. What do the parents tell that kid? "we are filipino, your brother is filipino, but you are not". even if they don't acknowledge their heritage, it's in their blood.

What I'm talking about are those who chose not to be a Filipino, and I don't get why most of us would still claim these celebrities and even call them "Filipino pride". When Fil-Aus Catriona Gray won Miss Universe, were Australians proud of her? When Fil-Am Liza Soberano was honored the top most beautiful woman in the world, were Americans proud of her? No, right? Because they are Filipinas; they chose to be. So no matter if Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, Vanessa Hudgens have it in their blood, they are Americans. And we Filipinos should stop claiming them because we look pathetic.

Absolutely agree with this.....to a certain extent. Its hypocritical to claim them as "one of us" when all I've heard in the media from them is "my mom makes lumpia and chicken adobo". Lea salonga is famous for her voice and talent. Should we penalise her for playing a Vietnamese refugee or an Arabian princess or a Chinese hero? We as filipinos have so much pride and yet we pick and choose when to play the victim

Also lacks research, we never select beauty pageants representative based on their ethnic background or colour but their overall stage performance during nationals. It just happens the two Filipinas who won Miss Universe or the recent representatives won because they’re the ones who are doing well on stage. Halatang Tamad mag research erereklamo ka agad kung Ano ang nakita. From 2000’s to 2013 (including 2016 and 2021) the girls are “pure” Filipina who actually did really well in the international pageant but just wasn’t their time and didn’t snag the international crown.

Hollywood casting half filipinos is a start for filipino people. WE HAVE TO BE THANKFUL REGARDLESS. But philippines film industry should have more brown and dark skin Pilipinos. Because filopinos are meant to be brown and dark. In Philippine film they always cast halfties or light skin. If I ever become a billionaire , I would get into films in the Philippines and I would change that.
