Is my back hill too steep for my Mahindra 1626 tractor to mow safely without rolling over?

Please do not try this at home kids. I am a trained idiot. I have been mowing this land with various implements since we built here in 2008. Every single method that I have tried has been pretty dangerous. At least with this new Mahindra 1626 I have the ROPS for when I roll the tractor over.
Over the next couple of years I am going to find the time to build retaining walls to terrace the land and make maintenance safer because I am getting too old for this crap.
I will not be posting too often so go ahead and subscribe if you want to be alerted to whatever stupidity I attempt next.

On our dairy farm located in the Green Mountains in Vermont, some of our pastures are nearly as steep as your hill. As such, we added a lot of extra weight to our tractor to improve stability. By ballasting with liquid we added 1403 lbs to the rear tires and 276 lbs to the front. We also added 440 lbs in rear wheel weights for a grand total of 2119 lbs additional weight. This makes for a huge improvement in stability, as it moves the tractor's center of gravity to a significantly lower position (total tractor weight is about 7800 lbs). Despite the added safety, I would not have attempted to drive on your hill whatsoever, and instead would have used a walk-behind mower (which I believe would have taken about the same amount of time) or better yet I would have left it to grow wild to attract wildlife like turkeys. Anyway, glad that you did not get hurt.

@weekendhack.whatsnext 3 года назад
I have thought about adding ballast to the tires but I do not do this regularly. It was really just to test if it was possible and I would not have tried it if I was not fairly positive it would work. I have another video using my commercial walk behind and that is almost as dangerous at times. I am going to be terracing the land over the next couple years with retaining walls and then mowing will not be an issue.
@PeterHonig.
@PeterHonig. 3 года назад
@@weekendhack.whatsnext The terracing sounds like a very good plan. You still may want to look at adding some weight to your wheels, as they really do improve both traction and stability even if you are on flat ground. With a tractor of your size, driving into a rabbit or fox hole is potentially enough to cause a roll-over if you don't have the extra ballast. Keep safe.

I did watch the entire video! LOL! But not to see you roll, but rather to watch your technique. Our Mahindra is on the way, and I'm watching as many safety videos as possible to prepare. We do have one hill but I don't think it's nearly this steep, thank goodness! Thanks for sharing!

Good luck with your new tractor. The larger the tractor then the more stable it will be. I do not advise approaching hills this steep. If you do make sure that it is perfectly dry and you are heading straight up or straight down for the best results. Never try a hill like this sideways or even at an angle.

Hi, Which mower do you use ?
@cogentdynamics
@cogentdynamics Год назад
Interesting! I mow a slope which is 23 degrees (40+%) measured with a machinist’s protractor and a 5’ level. It is half the height of your slope. I have been doing it for 30 years and just upgraded from my old B series Kubota to one with a loader. I would never approach either end of the hill on anything but 90 degrees to the edges. With a damp lawn and moist ground I have had the tractor sliding the whole way down with no control. That is with wide set wheels, filled tires, wheel weights, suitcase weights and crossed fingers. Be careful! By the way, how come you don’t back up the slop so you can mow up and down? That is how I do it. I assume you tried. Your hill looks very steep!

I will pray to our Lord Jesus for protection & safety when I do my hill 10%-37% , there is some place 60% which I will never use the tractor. I will walk the hill too see if it's dried (it has too be dried). Tractor I use is a Mahindra Max26XL HST with a mid or belly 60" deck( No front loader attach, No weight box in rear) in 4 wheel drive & low range that's the only way I mow the hill plus I will keep up the deck wheels little off the ground, I want weight on the tries. I go up the hill really slow, I think it's safer then going down( that's me). Thank for your video be safe.

Being dry is important but also look for any holes. Having a wheel drop into even a small chuck hole can create quite the problem when on an incline. Good Luck!

I’ve got 6 acres we’re gonna build on. Some of it is 60 degrees but most is 20 to 30. I have no tractor experience. I will also be learning how to nearly kill myself and terrace eventually. Looking at a Branson 2515h. I’ve been using a brush mower but it’s always breaking so I need a tractor. The mustard weeds are 10 ft tall right now. Nice work!

@@weekendhack.whatsnext I'm in East Tennessee. I put 30 gallons of washer fluid in each rear tire. I did it myself. It's easy and cheap to replace if you ever get a nail or thorn in it. You can use RV antifreeze as well. It's fairly cheap. You can get it in a 50 gallon drum at Rural King. I used a 5 gallon bucket, electric sump pump and garden hose to valve stem adapter from Tractor Supply.

The mower does not like encountering that sharp angle in reverse. There is barely enough articulation to accommodate it coming down the hill. This was really just an experiment. I do not mow these hills like this.

@@kdegraa Thanks but I try and keep the bucket low and like having that bucket to drop as a brake if things get squirrely. I am not sure if taking any weight off is a good idea but I will look into the science behind it just in case I am wrong.
@kdegraa
@kdegraa 3 года назад
I think a lot of the loader's weight is sitting pretty high on the tractor, above the engine. The loader would effectively be raising the tractor's center of gravity. Of course having the bucket at the front is a great brake incase the tractor gets out of control. However you'd have be super quick and alert to drop the bucket in time. Dropping the bucket too late would be disastrous. My idea of taking off the loader naturally depends on the ability to quickly and easily detach the loader. Some tractors can do this. Some can't. Good luck with it. My little farm is a bit hilly but maybe not as steep as your hill. I use a 4wd Iseki mower that I really like. The mower deck is out the front so its nice and easy to mow with. No sore necks looking behind all the time.

I know what you mean when you say the picture don't do it justice. I'm amazed with my L2501 how poor these r4 tires are on wet grass. I wish the R14's were available when I bought mine, they'd of been worth the upgrade. 2nd thought, did you check the overlap on your pto shaft? Like when you get to the bottom of the hill, and the mower is at the steepest angle. You can do serious expensive damage if it "bottoms out" and pushes your tractor's pto shaft in. I think tractor time with Tim covered that as he damaged his just loading/ unloading a mower onto a trailer with the shaft attached. Obviously yours kept going, but just a heads up thing to consider.
@weekendhack.whatsnext
@weekendhack.whatsnext 2 года назад
I think the industrial tires are the realistic compromise between turf and AG. Drainage is always an issue around here and the AG would create too many ruts. I did look closely at the PTO shaft and adjusted my top link to allow as much angle movement as possible and made sure that the shaft did not bottom out at the tightest angle.

If your back end loses traction going down hill and you're not quick enough to respond by speeding up going down the hill (can be pretty hard to do if you go into panic mode), the tractor can get sideways. I always mow up the steepest part of the hill and come down the lesser. I've came close several times over the years to turning one over but luckily I've been able to correct every situation so far. You quickly learn what not to do.
