After taking on remodeling a 1930 house while living in it I can tell you it takes skill and experience to do the job right. I've spent hours on youtube & thank God & had tools. Remodeling is nasty hard work. Your video is spot on. My suggestion, be willing to pay "once" for quality work from quality people. To quote a sign I have, "we have 3 kinds of service, but you can only pick two. "Good and Cheap won't be fast, Fast and Good won't be cheap, Cheap and Fast won't be good. Have a good day!

@Sivart Nildem - As a successful home remodeling contractor, I can tell you that the comments you made are typical of someone who is THE PROBLEM themselves ! There are SOME bad ones, but it CERTAINLY is not “ 90 %” I rely on word of mouth referrals, and you know what? It’s worked for me for over 40 yrs. However, I have come across many people who think like you, and guess what ? I walk away. I have too many good, loyal customers, and dont need to be aggravated by someone like yourself who thinks 90% of us suck. Look in the mirror. Probably THERE lies the problem.

I had an electrician do a panel change for me and I thought the price was a bit too cheap. Since the guy had good references I hired him anyway. Turned out that he did a great job, and I gave him a (cash) bonus along with a cheque for the estimate price. Pays to get references for any contractor.

Online resources help a lot. In my area I can search certifications with the state. I can search permits & stated project quotes in my city. I can cross reference to see if contractor/business has lawsuits chasing them in small claims. This got me a roof quote & install for a much fairer & realistic price.
@Darkely4u
@Darkely4u 3 года назад
Most contractors value their time and will charge what they are worth. There isn't a standard rate for any job. If you are cheap or simply don't have the money, do it yourself. The reason contractors don't care if they get you as a client is usually because they are booked 6+ months in advance and have another 6 months of work pending in quotes/estimates. Anyone who is ready to start your project in a week is likely to rip you off.

Agreed - really helps to get 2-3 quotes - but also pay attention to what the contractor is saying/and their demeanor - I’m more than willing to pay hundreds more to go with someone who appears to be very attentive, detailed, and can give past examples of the job in discussion. Finding additional costs during the job happens too - be glad they found the issue and are highlighting it! A $500 unforeseen additional expense to solve a problem that could result in thousands down the road is money well spent IMO. 👍

And get their suggestions, too! Sometimes experts have really good suggestions. We were getting quotes for a water softener and one guy said "do you want the brine tank on the main level so you don't have to go down the stairs to refill?" It was a brilliant wonderful idea, but it had never occurred to us (or the other 3 guys also giving a quote). ...We didn't even end up going with that company because they were super overpriced, but their input ended up being invaluable to the project regardless.

@@carlotta4th great idea! Sometimes it helps to just explain the symptoms to your problem, rather than asking the contractor to just perform the task you want/need done - a great contractor will give suggestions that exponentially benefit you more, for a little bit more (or even same/less) cost!

I think based on the comments people left here, you know how people think of contractors. If contractors didn't suck, why so many DIYers are out there!? You probably have not leaved in other countries. In other countries, DIY doesn't exist; people who need work done will find a contractor to do it (period). Here in North America and particularly in Canada, if you need any work done on the house, either have to be ready to be ripped off or Do It Yourself. And let's not forget, people watch your videos because they don't want to deal with contractors. Any ways, thanks for some of the good DIY videos that you have.
@carlotta4th
@carlotta4th 3 года назад
Is your contractor ripping you off, good question. Do you live in a nicer neighborhood? Then yes, they have arbitrarily added to the price and there's nothing you can do about that (every contractor will do the same thing). But you do have to keep in mind that you are also paying for experience. I was quoted $440 for two small electrical projects (adding a light/lightswitch) and that price seemed utterly ridiculous to me until here I am, $250 in tools, 3 attempts, and many holes to be patched up later... turns out one of those wirings was a lot trickier than I had expected. I now think that price would have been very fair. So sometimes you only find these things out in retrospect, like "hm, I think I vastly overpaid for that water softener" or "maybe $440 to be done with it wouldn't have been so terrible."

In my experience, it's the premium contractors with the Gold Star reputation that are most likely to overcharge to the maximum. Last year I had my furnace replace (oil to natural gas conversion) for my 1,400 sq. ft. home in Toronto. I spec'd the furnace make and model and obtained six quotes and was shocked by the variations in price. The range was $4,600.00 to $16,000.00 . I went with a contractor that had excellent references from others, answered all my questions, did provide a detailed quote and I just had a good feeling about at $5,600.00 . I felt the installation was clean, fast and professional and the inspector commented that it was a "very thorough installation" when he approved the gas to be turned on. The highest quote was provided by a nationally famous HVAC contractor, who advertises on the radio and billboards, technicians all wear a uniform and wear "booties" on their feet and they operate 30 trucks on the road. In my opinion, fancy graphics on their trucks, a uniform and "booties" wasn't worth paying an extra $10,400.00 .

USA here. It is the responsibility of the property owner to pick the "right" contractor or builder. Sometimes, even though you check references and they are great and you are very diligent in reading and reviewing the contract, you still get a contractor/builder who you have to watch like a hawk to avoid half ass short cuts and just plain bad building practices. Sometimes you may even catch the subs doing things that are in blatant violation of code. This is the reality and happened to me more than a few times during new construction of a home. For every good cop, there may be several bad. Same thing in every line of work including construction. This has been my experience. Right now, it's such a feeding frenzy in residential construction, I would venture a guess that there is a lot of shoddy stuff going on (new construction). A good and ethical remodeler is worth his/her weight in gold and will not cut corners or rip you off. However, expect to pay top dollar - and they are worth it!
@juzoli
@juzoli 3 года назад
When I get a quote, I always ask how much time it is to do, and how many people will come. They are generally more honest about that than about their prices... So when they said my sliding door installation is 2 days for 2 people, and I know that the cost of a person is $500 including taxes and profit, I calculated it should cost about $4000, if the door itself is $2000 (I actually ended up paying 1600 for it without any discount a contractor might get) Then they quoted me $11.000, and I said: Thanks, but no...:)

It's not just lack of relationship either, necessarily. There's risk involved in providing a quote to renovate in an existing building - lots of potential unknowns that may be uncovered during construction. A high-ish quote protects the contractor from incurring losses if something nasty is uncovered in demolition and will allow them to finish the job without needing to ask for additional money (they may do so anyway however...)

Another reason is getting bad vibes from potential clients. Occasionally you can sense someone who will either annoy you or complain for a discount etc for those people I alter my contracts and break the job and payments into segments. First of three jobs completed, payment is due before moving to next phase. It’s a tricky business and there’s a reason so many experienced contractors do it differently. Being from Labrador, we had heard of the "Labrador price" meaning some contractors would quote higher because the money we made up north was good. Without mentioning Labrador, the contractor agreed to look. This guy said he wanted $350 to prepare an estimate (site visit) & would be deducted if he got the job, My wife came in the shop & said we were moving from Labrador & asked if there was a cost for the quote? He said $450. Within 30 seconds he raised it. Before committing to an estimate, we checked him out. Apparently, he would price his work out of range to make an easy buck for the estimate only.

Yes. In 99% of cases they are there to take your money and do things as quickly and cheaply as possible or run if need be if they can't overcharge and swindle you. Why? Because they know people do these things once or twice in their lives and there's no way they'll ever see you again or get your money again. It's game theory/fact. One time and short term games are won only by the participants that betray, only long-term ones are won by tit-for tat strategists. So only enter long term games. How? The person has to be dependent on you for their "daily bread" and have prospects of long-term, repeated gain from you or they'll betray, almost every time. This makes it obvious for you the choices you have - do it yourself with friendly help, hire a student to help for a few months or open up a contracting business and employ the contractors. I advise no.1 and no.2 as options with the potential for the best AND cheapest result.

When it comes to home improvements their is no standard price every house is different and everyone works differently , depending on the size of a company and its overhead If i pay a laborer $25 hr it costs me $40 an hour after payroll,insurance and workers comp. Agreed. $8,000 for a mini-split on a 3rd floor is an absolute ripoff. Basically the installation is running power to the unit, creating about a 3" circular hole through to the exterior, mounting the fan/compressor with a suitable floating bracket, running some PVC for the drip, and charging the unit up. Not including the price of the unit, about $1200 to $1500 would be a more than fair install price, with $2000 on the very high end if code required interior plumbing etc. Only way it would cost $8000 is if the unit cost $6000 which would be absurd. Recommend you buy the brand and type of unit you want yourself, and find a qualified person to install it.

He Didn’t install the fireplace specified in the contract, and used duct tape when mastic was specified. I called the general contractor and they sent a different sub contractor. But I ended up not getting the fireplace I specified. I did not want to ruin my relationship with the general contractor so I did not ask them to remove the fireplace. We would have to charge $150 minimum. A handyman is your best bet for something like that. We generally do larger projects not minor repairs.
@RyanMartin1
@RyanMartin1 3 года назад
Think of it this way. Someone is going to first come to your house and look at the smoke alarm, drive and buy a replacement, come back and install it, and then drive back to the shop. That time will add up to many hours for a relatively cheap device being installed, and the total price with all the time included will be outrageous. Because someone is going to spend half their day on the smoke detector. They would rather be working on a job that keeps several people busy for a week or months.

To have an electrician come and replace 3 items in your home will cost you 300.00 minimum. If you can find one to come out. Good luck. The people you refer to are charging 1000.00 a day in wages alone. Are you going to pay 1000.00 for someone to come out for 2 hours? So your job is not a priority for them. Even a handy man is going to charge you a fair amount for coming out for 2 hours. At least a handyman might be willing to help you.

Question: I am helping my parents find a contractor to remodel their bathroom. We have provided almost all of the parts. The contractor wants 30% at signing and 30% day one of work. Does that sound like a typical amount of collateral? we are okay with the final price but it just sounded like a lot basically upfront. Thanks again!!
@evictioncarpentry2628
@evictioncarpentry2628 3 года назад
They can ask whatever they want, obviously. I personally think thats a little high. I'd say 25% upfront isn't terrible but as far as further payments, it wouldn't be the first day. It would be progress payments as we go. Weekly or bi-weekly depending on the size/length of the project. Example, 25% up front, week 1 15%, week 2 15%, remainder on completion. All depends on the situation though. Case by case basis. I could see if they feel like the customer may be difficult getting payment out of they could ask for more up front but who knows.

If a contractor can't get a job started without any up front money, move on from them. A business should have some operating capital to get going. I am a Licensed General Contractor in California. Law states that I can only ask for a max of 10% or $1000 in advance whichever is lower. I know customers can have a bit of a sticker shock when prices are quoted on projects. We don't try to gouge anyone when it comes to our pricing, we just ask for what the market can bare. We spend years and years perfecting our craft and deserve to get paid properly. Always get at least 3 estimates, 'm not talking chicken scratches on a piece of paper either, a detail estimate is needed, make sure the person is actually licensed with a bond, you will have some recourse if you get stiffed. It does happen, even with licensed companies. Don't the slam the contractors, we all work hard to provide a good service.

@tay13666
@tay13666 3 года назад
Is there an actual contract? When is that final 40% due? How long is the projected timeline? IF you've checked his references, and like his previous work. You like the overall price. And if the balance isn't due until completion, it still might be just fine. Especially if this is going to be a relatively short project. Could just be the way he does business. He could be a busy contractor, that initial 30% might be to make sure you are serious and not wasting his time. Or to pay for whatever permits might be needed. That next 30% is probably to pay his help when they start working on the project. Or to cover the cost for the dumpster for everything they are pulling out. In the end, if it feels wrong then I would walk away. But if everything seems legit and he has a good rep, and you get a good vibe from him, I'd do it.
