Hey Matthew, you inspired me to take the 1st level Italian Sommelier Association class in Rome. Thank you for your hard work and guidance!😊

“I loved smelling that guitar” 😂 that was your cue to start a career in wine 👍🏻 nice video again Matthew! Terre Nere is one of my favorite Etna producers. I also enjoyed a visit to Gambino.

Another good video. Enjoyed the pics of the vineyards and mountains. I like the bigger blind tastings because I can learn more. Also there was a wine store that was going out of business so I got a bottle of GD Vajra Barolo. My 1st Nebbiolo. Haven't tried yet but after watching this video glad I grabbed it.😊

Could you try some Canadian wine? I heard it’s really underrated and the quality is top notch and even better than some European wine

If so, must try both Niagara-on-the-Lake and Okanagan Valley's for two completely different styles :)

For me, the sweet spot for amount of wine when watching you blind taste is 6-8 bottles. Re Etna Rosso, I've almost never been disappointed, entry level wines from Graci and Benanti have really delivered. My favourite so far has been Valenti Puritani 2014. Some Etna Rosso give me more Burgundy vibes than many non-Burgundy Pinot. I have the entry level Terre Nere waiting for me to be opened. Curious about it, seems like the benchmark Etna Rosso.

Entry level Tere Nere is stellar IMO

Great tasting video and tasting Nebbiolo vs. Nerello Mascalese is no easy feat as they share some commonalities. I would say that Nebbiolo d'Alba or Langhe Nebbiolo is more readily available and more inexpensive than Etna Rosso. Interesting that there was only 5 US$ price difference between the Rosso and the Contrada. I do enjoy both Nerello and Nebbiolo, it's hard to choose a favorite, ha! 😂 I think for a blind tasting video 6--8 wines is about the right amount, as once you get to 12 or 14 bottles it gets a bit confusing and overwhelming. Trying to remember them and differentiate between them is pretty challenging. Nice video, cheers!

My vote is for 6-8. It has struck me that Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo are two sides of the same coin, the Pinot Noir being the feminine side and the Nebbiolo being the masculine side. The Nebbiolo can do the beguiling ethereal things like Pinot Noir but there is that kick at the end something like Cabernet Sauvignon can do. Nerello Mascalese is the only other grape I know of that can also hold its head high in this group. True, an occasional Grenache can what these grapes can but that is rare. My heart goes out to you for struggling in a blind tasting like this, but you set up a very difficult task for yourself.

Had my first Etna Rosso last night. One of those wine moments when you do not know much about the wine, take a drink, and immediately hold the glass away from you and take a long, inquisitive look while thinking, "Yes! Who are you and how come we have not met before?"

I was recently blinded on that garrone wine as well and the total lack of tannins really threw me off! Ive had some very structured Alto Piemonte nebbiolos like the wines from Vallana which i think are outstanding value for old school neb. Great video as always

Another interesting tasting Matthew My tasting of Etna wines has been limited need to try more of them Love Alto Piedmonte wines especially Gattinara I may prefer Langhe nebbiolo to Alba I believe Langhe can be declassifed Barolo or Barbaresco and can also have 15% other local grapes added while Alba must be 100% nebbiolo Probably like the larger tastings although it is tougher

Cause of this video I really noticed how much prejudice I have with wine: I was in Sicily and knew Barolo before I knew Pinot and so I was so much more invested in this video than your last one… and now I feel a bit ashamed of that 😂😂😂

cant claim I am expert of Nebbiolo but I had enough Piedmont wines to decidedly say, I have no idea what Nebbiolo smells and tastes like😅 it is so different and very easily affected by technics deployed by a wine maker, specially oak. only way you can identify a heavy oaked Barolo is by its color, no other grape has those crazy tannins with that color, otherwise, wine can be from anywehre😅
@drmatthewhorkey

To me, it does have a specific character - esp w the tannins
