A really good ‘why we love Dan’ showcase here: 1. How clearly upset he is at being accused of not going deep enough in his comparative analysis of box office metrics, 2. How sincerely grateful he is to have a platform where his recommendations about films that he’s enjoyed that might easily be overlooked sometimes result in people seeking them out.

I can't wait to have Top Gun: Maverick on digital but I was hoping it would wait until it at least passed Black Panther at the number 5 spot domestically. It had a pretty good shot at doing it but now with it coming out on digital next week that probably won't happen. There's still a small chance it can but will be very difficult. However, passing Infinity War for #6 is incredible for a sequel to a movie from the 80's. Most people didn't think it would make worldwide what it just did domestically alone. Simply amazing!
@SumDumGy
@SumDumGy 2 года назад
I don’t think it was quite going to make that #5 spot. Regardless of the digital release. With just under $27 million to go and dropping below $1 million daily averages, it seemed unlikely at this point. I’ll keep seeing it though and help it along (I’m up to 14 viewings now and 19 tickets) because after it leaves the theater, I won’t get to see it again until November when my 4K disc comes in. Thanks to my local second run theater which should keep me sustained a bit longer. I simply reject digital and streaming outright, and Paramount releasing it on digital like they’re about to only reinforces my resolve on that.
@magnum1980
@magnum1980 2 года назад
@@SumDumGy After this weekend I think it will be about $18 million away from catching Black Panther. It's still possible even if it's going to digital next week but as I said it will be more difficult. I think it would have definitely passed it if it didn't go to digital. It will need to be in theaters for at least another 3 weeks though. Anyway, we will see. And 14 viewings? WOW!
@SumDumGy
@SumDumGy 2 года назад
@@magnum1980 Well, consider that, without digital, it’s still dropping. Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays see bumps but we’re still going to be $500,000-$800,000 per day this week. Next week will be less. The number of theaters showing it will be dropping. Neither of my local theaters have it scheduled at all beyond the 24th, and didn’t even before the digital announcement. I want this to happen more than anyone else. Clearly more than Paramount does. It’s possible but I don’t think it’s likely at this point, but I’d love to be proven wrong. I’m sure not down going to see it and just can’t understand why Paramount hasn’t offered me a free 4K copy already! Do I have to beg?

I am not sure sure if Netflix really need to spend h $200 million for any movie At best it might have get buzz for a few days and gives Neflix 120 minutes of content - - Better off spending it on a tv series that gives 10+ hours of content for the same price that will keep peole invested over several weeks or several lower budget movies
@toddhollen
@toddhollen 2 года назад
Yeah I think it's bananas that they are spending that kind of money for big action spectacle movies that people can only watch at home. Most people go to the theaters only to watch the big action spectacle movies and watch the smaller movies at home. So Netflix should either spend that money on low budget movies: comedies, rom coms, horror, prestige dramas and TV shows (and maybe spend some money to actually promote those things so people know about them). Or at least release the big spectacle movies into theaters for a few weeks to rack up some box office money and buzz and then make it exclusive to Netflix. You know, like Disney is doing with most of its movies (except Pixar for some reason). Though I watched The Adam Project and The Gray Man because they were right on my TV, but even with AMC A-List I don't know if I would have bothered to watch them in the theater. So might help for them to also try to make good high budget movies.

Most of the The Gray Man was actually shot in Prague, even locations like Bangkok, Baku, Vienna and Berlin. I happened to be an extra in of the scenes - it took a whole day to shoot, 400+ extras, they've fed us, gave out bottled water (because it was late June/early July but for some reason April in the movie so we wore coats), we had two covid tests, one before the shooting and another one for the costume trying. The scale seemed ridiculous on the set, but it essentially amounted to one minute of screentime being a background for Chris Evans 😂 I don't know much about movie production, but it seemed to me the whole thing could've been made for 4x less and look the same.

That “fan appreciation” event for Top Gun: Maverick was a joke! Sure, I got a really cool poster (that I would have missed out on had I not specifically asked for it on my way out the door...limited to 200 per location and no one was handing them out upon check-in), but that bonus footage was about three minutes of quasi-behind the scenes stuff. The main cast giving a line or two of dialogue about filming on an air craft carrier and some accompanying footage. What added insult to injury was I saw that exact same footage three days earlier mixed in with trailers at the 40th Anniversary screening of E.T., and that was on an IMAX screen. Regardless, that special weekend event gave Maverick a solid boost toward reaching that #6 spot and I’ve now seen it 14 times. Woohoo! I really object to these staggered digital/physical releases. Three months between what amounts to two variants of home media release?! Just on more reason I’ll never support digital/streaming. Paramount should have learned better also when it comes to releasing this digitally while the film is still in its theatrical run. They’ll only damage that total box office haul while it continues to climb and dominate. Bullet Train is a lot of fun!

@Bad_Wolf_Media
@Bad_Wolf_Media 2 года назад
I don't think so. It's sitting around $675MM, and took in right around $7MM the last two weeks, including the incentivized expansion. That means it would have to keep making that same amount for at least 4 more weeks to break $700MM. If there's any drop, that window just keeps running out further and further. Even with it coming out on digital, some theatres will keep showing it, but $700MM is likely just out of reach.

I got a job at a movie theater a couple months ago, and there was an Indian movie called Karthikeyea 2 that was MASIVE for us. Easily our biggest grosser this past weekend, and I’m shocked to see it’s not on the limited release chart. We canceled showings of other movies like Inu-Oh (literally all of our showing for that), Fall, and even one for Top Gun: Maverick because so many Indian people were showing up to see it. Laal Singh Chaddha made some money, but nowhere near as much as Karthikeya 2. I tried finding box office data for it, but there wasn’t any easily available for America. I’ve heard Indian box office is difficult to track, but it seems odd one Indian movie did well on paper, and another one that I know did way better isn’t getting its due.

Hey Dan, I'd just like to add my own personal perspective on Iron Giant and its box office flop. I remember being a kid seeing the trailers everywhere on my channels, as well as all the promotional material and marketing ties ins around it. I was so hyped and then my mom told me it looked "too scary" to take me to see and it was a whole big deal. This could have been the case for other parents who didn't know what the movie was about except a giant scary robot. Unsure, but eventually I saw it on VHS and it was glorious.

I love this show 💙 I do have a doubt about PFV (Please excuse me if you've already mentioned it somewhere and I missed it) For the denominator, do you consider the listed run time that includes credits/intro or only the actual runtime of the episode/movie excluding the credits,etc.? I know that sometimes taking the actual runtime can be tedious (especially for long shows with variable extra time) but most people don't really watch credits/intros, especially not on Netflix and that can add up in cases of series and give a lower PFV.(in contrast with a movie with only one credits section) Just a thought :)

The Sandman was an interesting idea but just not very good. It was an oddly-paced series, filled with too many superfluous characters and story beats that just seemed clunky and kind of aimless. It started ok but after about three or four episodes, it really just became a slog to finish. There wasn't really enough to make you care about any of the characters. It was also incredibly frustrating because too much time was spent on the things that were the least interesting. I was really invested in seeing how David Thewlis's character would play out because he was the most interesting part of the show. It seemed like they were setting him up to be the main villain of the series... and then nope. There were a few good performances but overall the acting was subpar or just boring. Also, Patton Oswalt was just a horrible choice for the voice of the raven. I don't think I would go back for a second season if they make another.
@liyagaynutdinova9496

That was certainly the main risk adapting it from the comics, because the plot overall is a string of loosely connected stories or stories within stories, creating a dreamlike narrative that relies a lot on the reader's imagination. So making it more real through live-action defeats the purpose somewhat. Overall I thought it was at least a noble attempt when it comes to the respect for the original.

it is a shame we will no oonger have the top gun maverick story it still had potential for taking the number 5 spot over black panther and dare i to hope even further still. it is a curious stopping point given everything we have learnt over the pandemic which is streaming kills revenue generation so while it still had much potential in the tank it is an odd choice. and of course dan this week trying to help suss out the age old problem for streaming servcie just what is value to them and at what theshold is to much to have created a show or film. i cam geneally sum up the problem for most servcies in a simple thought experiment what unique shows or films do they have that you will watch more than once...when you start looking at it though this lens you really start to see the problem and why they are not retaining people. they have focused so much on breadth and volume of content they sacrificed rewatchability and quaility. this is where zaslav returning to a more tradtional money making window will help hbo out and has been a proven success for discovery which while maybe is not a giant in the market has carved out its own permant spot. but no one else has really caught onto this yet and like so many they are just throwing larger budgets but often the best way to get more creative stories is give a good writer less budget and see what they can do as it has to become more about the story and charcter.

@@steelydyl Nah, like more in the sense when a movie actually leaves the theatres. Specifically what comes to mind for me at least is Knives Out. It was still in theatres in March of 2020 when the pandemic began, obviously not in wide release but it was still making money. That’s nearly 5 months after it’s initial release! Probably as a result of it’s Oscar nomination. I know back when the r/BoxOffice was a smaller subreddit they’d used to post “End of Theatrical Run” and I found it interesting.

My guess would be that some popular films have extremely long "tails" where they're still playing in a few theatres because a 15-screen multiplex is showing them once or twice a week on one screen because they're still getting a trickle of people doing repeat viewings or who didn't see them when they came out. Top Gun: Maverick would be a particularly successful example. I remember when I was a teenager, my local cinema kept showing The Full Monty (a British comedy about unemployed steelworkers who try to make some money as male strippers) for something like 6 months.

The thing about Purple Hearts is that it is filling an under served audience: fans of romance movies. The Gray Man was an entertaining film but it’s not that different from every other movie that is out there right now: the over blown action flick. Movies like the Adam Project worked because it had sci-if and comedic elements.

Shrug? As a devil's advocate, I could say that the massive budgets are necessary to do effects well enough to tell the sort of speculative fiction that's been popular on the page for decades, and is only now possible on the screen. Whether that should be a $100M budget or a $250M budget seems pretty much up to technicalities if you accept that. Now, if you want to say that you didn't see the budget on screen for the Grey Man outside of getting big names, or Thor 4, etc, then yeah: getting a huge budget should (ideally) only be for when a story actually benefits from it.
@KeithFraser82
@KeithFraser82 2 года назад
Almost all blockbusters cost more than that now. And inflation means that a lot of older movies (e.g. Terminator 2, which was the most expensive movie made up to that point, unadjusted for inflation) cost more than that too in today's money. Now, I agree that you could make the case that a lot of blockbusters have bloated budgets spent on huge actor salaries, complex visual effects which don't look very good in the finished product, overlong shoots with a lot of time wasted, reshoots etc. and that independent filmmakers manage to make much better yet "leaner" genre films with much lower budgets via e.g. clever practical effects (e.g. Duncan Jones' Moon) and lo-fi CGI (e.g. Gareth Edwards' Monsters, where if I remember correctly Edwards did all the CGI himself on a laptop). Certainly when you look at things like horror franchises where the original was made for tens or hundreds of thousands (Night of the Living Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, etc.) and the remakes/reboots/requels/whatever cost tens of millions, it seems like there's a vast disconnect and a lot of money is being spent for no reason or in actively detrimental ways (e.g. taking something which was originally shaky, grimy and grungey and looked more realistic as a result and making it Hollywood-glossy).

I think a problem is with Netflix movies like the Greyman, is that even if they spend $200 million on making them, the public perception is that they are sub-par movies - a bit like straight to video movies back in the 90s. They just dont have the same perceived quailtiy as a moive made by a major studio that had a release in theatres. Even movies that did not do well at the box office like Secrets of Dumbledore proably do better on Steaming than most netflix movies due to this.
@KeithFraser82
@KeithFraser82 2 года назад
I don't understand how they manage to spend $200 million on some of these movies. With something like Eternals or Secrets of Dumbledore or Top Gun: Maverick you can see why they cost that sort of money. Red Notice, by my recollection, didn't really have much in the way of big set-pieces or spectacular VFX-heavy scenes or huge constructed sets. (I don't recall if The Grey Man was similarly relatively "low-key" because I fell asleep a few minutes in.) (In a similar vein, I don't understand how one of the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels managed to cost somewhere close to $400 million, unless they were somehow wasting money in vast quantities on delayed shooting, reshoots, sets which got built but never used, etc.)

@@JohnSmith-tl8pq Actually big salaries might be to compensate for no residuals from the box office. Blumhouse is the opposite in that they get decent talent for their films by offering above average residuals. Ethan Hawk probably did quite nice for himself with the Black Phone as an example.

I’m a big fan of Asian cinema so I’m glad to see Indian, Korean, Japanese and Chinese cinema doing well here in the US in limited release and abroad. I’ve seen 4 Indian films at my local theaters this past week and one of them was Laal Singh Chaddha. It was a great adaptation of Forest Gump and I actually prefer it over the original. It had more heart and was more meaningful and spiritual. There’s no dance sequences in case people are wondering but the beautiful songs and score move you anyway. Definitely go see it. I also recommend the anime rock opera Inu-Oh!

100% Sandmans prime audience (i.e. over 25) is not young enough to have the time to binge it all in one weekend. They probably haven't even got time to start watching it. I know we don't. Very much looking forward to it, but in no rush. Also don't expect we'll be bombarded with spoilers like we are for anything Star Wars or MCU (esp as the assumption is this crowd are predominately already familiar with the comic), so as a newbie coming into it I'm certainly in no hurry.
