You may need to edit this. Your advise on just bring the drugs you can't buy here in your bags is very dangerous, for those following it. those drugs you are frustrated are not available are controlled drugs because of the ease of their use in illicit drug manufacturing. Anyone taking your advise is at risk of being accused of drug smuggling.

I think re roadworks, they spray tar on the road then cover it with loose stone chippings, the traffic helps it to bed in then eventually they send a road sweeper along to clean up whatever chipping didnt bed in. Its a cheap fix to resurface an existing road without replacing the entire thing.

You seem to be surprised that NZ isn't the same as the USA. A tiny country at the bottom of the world was always going to be very different to where you come from, in both good and bad ways. Re Emergency phone numbers. There are about 50 different emergency numbers in use around the world. The one used in most Countries is:112 (Most of Europe) 911 (North America) then a host of others. eg Australia 000, New Zealand and some other Commonwealth countries 111. So, every new Country you visit, it pays to find out what their emergency number is. Cheers.
@DomingoDeSantaClara
@DomingoDeSantaClara Год назад
I left NZ over 20 years ago but at that time if you rang 911, it would still put you through to the emergency operator, not sure if that's still the case now that mobile phones have taken over from landlines?
@johnwilson5743
@johnwilson5743 Год назад
@@DomingoDeSantaClara Hi Dom. You are correct. In many of the Countries the Governments also keep the main world emergency numbers "linked". (Not all) To cater for stupid people. In times of stress, people revert to the emergency numbers they know. Meaning, a private business can not use other emergency numbers.

NZ is v young geologically v geologically active, and has v shallow soils, that along with high rainfall means a lot of slips. Hense in part the seal we use on our rounds. You'll find that the topseal on most us roads is upwards of 6 inches thick. Here it's about an inch. Thick seal would crack

this may be an assumption but i always believed the emergency number was 111 because it was the shortest distance to dial on the old rotary phones (next to 000 of course which is the Australian emergency number) as for slips on roads A) NZ is very hilly so a lot of our roads cut through the land and because we were/are a poor colony the funding didn't extend to much more than hacking a channel through the hillside and B) i think until recently slips weren't as common as they are now. Climate change or not, we're definitely experiencing more intense weather events that probably weren't expected back then.
@michaelheliotis5279
@michaelheliotis5279 Год назад
You're correct that 111 is because of rotary phones but there's a bit more to it. So in the UK, they chose 999 as their number because the payphones in use at the time allowed you to use the 0 digit for free in order to dial the operator, and they could be more easily modified to allow using the 9 digit for free because this was next to the 0 on British phones. On rotary phones, which use a pulse dialing system, the 9 digit on a British phone would send 9 pulses, but on NZ phones the numbers 1-9 were printed the other way around, so the 1 digit would send 9 pulses instead. As the telephone equipment was otherwise the same as the British equipment apart from the number printing, using 111 as the emergency number meant that no further modifications were needed to adapt the British equipment as dialing 111 on the NZ phones would still send 9 pulses. The British 9 or NZ 1 actually have the second longest distance to dial on a rotary phone after a 0, but nevertheless it was a happy coincidence that finding the 9 (or 1 in NZ) was rather easy in the dark because it was only one hole away from the metal dial stop. The US number was chosen as 911 so that, after initially dialing the 9, the remaining digits would be a 1 and thus had the minimal distance to rotate the dial along with the shortest time for it to reset, leading to a more expeditious experience.

A note of caution on manuka honey. The honey you buy in jars at the grocery store are for eating not for wounds, this honey still has pollen in it and can have other tiny bits and pieces that, like small bits of dead bees. If put directly onto open wounds those impurities can cause irritation and even infection and make the healing process take longer. Proper wound dressing manuka honey has been ultra-filtered so that there are no impurities whatsoever. Also manuka honey as food is a complete ripoff. There are no proven health benefits to eating manuka honey, there may be some benefit if you have a sore throat but that's about it. If you like to taste, more power to you, but is it really worth paying that much money just for the taste?

So you mean the US only uses asphalt? (Tar and small stones mixed together and laid down.) NZ rarely uses concrete roading as a general thing, as the US does. NZ uses wet tar and stone chip on top of that. (The tar is the 'glue' for the gravel- which has to be clean.) Stone chip will give you better grip in the wet, than asphalt would. The only thing NZ doesn't do which it should, is to sweep to up he excess stones with a machine. Australia does this. NZ doesn't and it stinks. Chips constantly can fly up from other cars going too fast and hit your windscreen.
