Commenting at 40 minutes in, but Scott is succeeding at being the Alton Brown of painting, even when he doesn't see it, and Jon may or may not be Guy Fieri doing Guy's Big Bite and finding the fun part of 'infotainment'. You each have a vibe, and you both creatively honor that vibe and I adore you idiots.
Super happy to hear how much you enjoyed the Capital Palette. Truely proud of being a part of the tram that initially developed the open system for thr Capital Palette around 2015-2018 ... happy that it makes people happy :)
And you can rest assured that Golden Demon won't change for the better...Yay! Also, big props to Scott being able to sit there and just actively listen while Jon has the spotlight for a while. Not a lot of podcast do that well.
Hey guys, thanks for mentioning broken anvil. I would appreciate it if you talked more about this once you have more information. As a Riverstone backer the information coming out is damming for Chris at BAM. It seems very clear that the additional kickstarters were bandaid runway extension.
I would mark this KS as a loss. I've seen it quite a few times already, from other companies as well. You'll be super-lucky if you get your money back, much less the product you supported. They didn't mean to screw you over, but now that they have, getting them to fess up to it is a pipe dream.
I’ve been using my son’s pop it as a silicone dry pallet and it works like a rockstar! Contrast paint, speed paint, pro acryl metallics, even basing texture paste. They all came off like nothing after they dried!
It was fun to meet you there John. Thank you for all the talks. Yeah the meeting in the GW both was funny so sorry for that haha. See you there next year as I liked the event so much that I want to go back.
Broken Anvil was just a poorly-run business. They made the classic Kickstarter start-up company mistake of treating revenue as profit, using money that should have paid for a Kickstarter project to over-expand their business, then had to create more Kickstarters to try and pay for past Kickstarters, which never works, with predictable results - the company is no longer a going concern. If they deliver any of their Kickstarters, I'd be stunned.
For reals, as someone who is on the autism spectrum, giving Vince an 'anchor' (even if there isn't an "ism" there) is such a rad thing to do to keep someone grounded when they're nervous (I know I would be so appreciative if a friend did something like that for me)!
Silicone fidget pop-its, works great for contrast paints amazingly. You can buy them for like a dollar. I am sure the companies making them for Painters are ridiculous price. Should try it for sure. Great video idea!😜
There is a small 7-cup silicone dry pallet that's been available on Amazon for a long time. The cups are not as thin as the fidget poppers, though. It works well but yes, some acrylic paint still "sticks", but will rub off.
Open systems are great, because all the painters are competing against the standard for the category, rather than competing to displace each other out of an award.
Jon how you gonna talk about our awesome class and not mention the 30 pack we killed?? Was so great chilling with you as always, and having you in class. So happy to hear it was rewarding and a great experience, thank you for all the kind words as usual. Can’t wait to chill again, and to see you back at next Nova. Also happy to hear about your take on Capital Palette, an incredible amount of work has gone into growing it the past few years and the guys behind it also work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it great. Oh also- the other apprentice judge was Dan Ozborne, Dave Taylor is the head judge. One more thing- Scott quit munching tendies and get off your ass and get down here too 😉😘
Gaslands! Gaslands! Gaslands! The tabletop mini's game where you convert hot wheels and matchbox cars into Death Race / Mad Max mayhem machines and race to the death to win a free trip the the utopia on Mars. You have stumbled upon greatness my friend.
Thank you for coming back to Broken Anvil Studios. It helps to know you'll look at this objectively. There is really something wrong at BAM, but the scrutiny applied may help drive this and not allow others to skate backers.
Hey, don't hate on Noodles and Company. I absolutely love their parmesan crusted chicken and penne rosa. Place was my go to 'this is gonna be a little treat for myself' meal in college. Mainly because I could not afford to go to actual nice places lol.
I live just cross the river in North Virginia, somehow I've never seen the DC rats, but every time some I know of visits they manage to see some. Sad I had to miss NOVA this year, hope to make it next year!
Turbodork released those palettes at Adepticon, I am pretty sure the ads for that release showed it working. I got a small one and use it anytime I use contrast or washes. The big chunks pop out easily but you need a little soap and water to get rid of the little bits and the dust buildup.
They are doing what they always do, talking about gaming from their perspective. They had a business relationship with a company that later seems to have overestimated or underestimated badly. They took the money, they did the promo work, and Chris even got his minis from them for his KS. So what do we expect? Tagging old videos seems a low bar to clear, but not sure what that will accomplish. The business speak of monitoring the situation did surprise me. That had to hurt. But they both do this for their livelihood, so it's not surprising they will be careful in a situation when a business partner is disappointing their backers, many of whom are *their* fans and may have backed based on what they saw from their coverage. About all we can expect from them is greater diligence when they are approached by other KS campaigns
I also came to NOVA Open for the first time (any hobby convention really) and enjoyed the painting classes and competition. I did somewhat end up feeling like a faceless individual in the crowd but granted, I didn’t know many people who were going to it, other than a handful of content creators who I didn’t want to interrupt (it seemed like a revolving door around you). Missing it this year due to seeing Coheed the same weekend.
At this point you’ve probably confirmed the effect of the silicone pop its, but I can confirm that washes, speedpaints, and contrast paints pop off like nothing in them! No hassle at all
In Portugal we have Modelscala. It's in my home town, it isn't really big like any of those conventions but the amount of models submited is quite high. There are some great painters here even from Spain, coming to a small city next to Lisbon called Montijo
Showing is far more powerful than telling when teaching people things. So, when you say "this can be done without an airbrush" showing it quickly being done is far more impactful for people. The Broken Anvil situation reminds me of the Ninja Division one, hopefully Broken Anvil can turn it around and deliver everything to their customers. (And yes I have to comment here because its going to take ages to see this whole video at this point :p)
D.C. native here, so glad you enjoyed our food scene. We’ve got some real bangers. Also, our rats are NOT to be trifled with. They’re absolute menaces.
I love open contests. I build more models than minis so I go to different conventions, but Wonderfest model contest is amazing! This year it topped 1000 entries. (the miniature category keeps growing every year too) With it being low pressure, lots of people do like Jon did. Bring entries they have no expectation of winning just because they are cool. So you get to see lots of interesting, fun, pieces. And Jon is right, not actually 'competing' against other people makes it a lot more fun and enjoyable. You can really appreciate other people's work and not look for minor things to tear it down hoping if they do worse, yours will do better.
I'd like to see an open rubric for the capital palette grade system, better scheduling of the awards so it doesnt conflict w painting classes, and ways to get feedback after the fact if you couldnt catch a judge . Nova as a whole was great, the display cabinets were great, but if you compare the number of journeyman entries to the number recognized, there's a big mismatch on expectations, and probably more entries than reasonable to try to judge in the saturday night. I heard from one entrant who didnt place that when he asked for feedback, a judge said it would have gotten bronze if they had seen it, but could be considered a finalist....
I sold all my painted minis when I moved to Utah because I didn't have anyone to play with and I wanted cash for another hobby. 10 years later, I totally regret it. I've made new friends that are geeks like me and started painting again.
Let me add that I’d love to see a convention at Moscone Center in San Fran. No where near the amenities you describe here but a huge amazing con location.
Hi guy's, thank you for another great podcast. A thing to try as an option from the hard-pointed Q Tip is something Gaia Notes makes called a finisher. A thin plastic handle with either 1 or 2 tips of a firm but absorbant foam. Try looking in Gundam stores online for the best buying options.
Broken Anvil is a dude with maybe good intentions and a vision knowing nothing about business, getting access to more money than he is able to handle reasonable, making really dumb deductions, loosing fokus on the goals and trying to keep things running, while denying that everything is already going downhill real fast.
This is a pretty damning statement about the crowd funding industry. I knew none of these issues with Broken Anvil existed. I backed Dungeon Delver. It was delivered. Minis are great. Granted it was about a year late, that was still earlier than I expected it. People who back multiple kickstarters know you add at least a year to that expected delivery date. Honestly my only experience with the company was great. This is really unfortunate to hear.
yes the silicon pallet/poppers work they are just a bit small for my liking. Acrylic paint isn't that flexible even a very thin coat of speed paint pops out, but its more around the edges and then you peel it off.. Reminds me of thin pva glue peeling off glass or silicon.
Yeah I think it would be interesting if john’s layer chop technique would work well on an inorganic model like a cities of sigmar soldier. As I think it works really well on an organic beast like a monster, but would be intriguing to see how it works on uniform people with armour and cloth etc.
Dunno bout that guy from Japan, you can 100% get sable hair brushes from art stores here in Japan, and I've ordered straight from Artis Opus's webstore plenty of times.
Parking for people at the convention was actually $25/night but i only learned that after I opted for a similar parking solution that this discount was available
If you don't like how people comment and give criticism, maybe you should tell them how you'd *like* them to do it. Unless you did and I missed it, I haven't watched the whole video. ba-dumb-tiss
I don't think the issues with Adepticon are caused by size of the event. My theory is that it's because of GW's dominance over the event, they seem to foster this kind of dog-eat-dog environment, almost as if they wanted to make that grimdark future into reality themselves.
I think just reframing the "You don't need an airbrush to accomplish this effect" instead as something like, "I'm going to use an airbrush here, but if I was trying to accomplish this using traditional painting methods I would (Insert a few tips here before moving on with the video)" and it might short circuit some of the complaints people come up with without having to film "proof", though certainly there is never a way to please some people.
1:29:31 Who is the guy the are talking about? I'm not good at understanding names from that part of the world so I don't know what to type on google :(
Yeah. Add me to the people disapointed in the monitoring the situation nonsense. BAM has been down to 2 employees with no path forward for weeks. They're done, they ran new kickstarters to fund past ones, banking on a reaper bones ks level of funding they had no reason to realistically expect with the last one.
You guys are talking about the paint line being the third Kickstarter and the previous two being unfulfilled as 'sus' but you BOTH showcased the paint lines four months ago and five months ago. Seems really weird to come months after that come out and be like "Yeah we were worried about it but we still recommended you back that paint Kickstarter." And it's funny that you're talking about the risks of Kickstarters but you've got another Kickstarter you're hawking here. Mind you this one at least has delivered on their previous Kickstarter, which would be something to mention but consumers need to be a lot smarter in how they buy and WHO they listen to.
I haven't been to Adepticon but I'd expect there to be good food within walking distance just like Nova, that's not the case? Gencon and Origins both have good food nearby. NOVA is in my backyard (and I've been when it was at the old location), but dealing with the parking and the drive kept my lazy ass at home. Edit: I guess I was under the impression that Adepticon was in Chicago itself.
Question for those that have been to NOVA. Do you think a handmade dice maker would sell well? I've thought about trying to sign up my business to be there, but I wasn't sure how well I'd do. I know wargaming players can be dice goblins just like TTRPG players, but I wonder how much.
Nah Broken Anvil has always been a joke. Never ever EVER support any kickstarter. This isn't the first or last time a kickstarter will fail and it's not the only model/game company messing up and acting like conartist. Take a good look at Mythic Games and thier kickstarter for the Darkest Dungeon board game. They have repeatedly extorted money from thier backers well after the campain has finished and held ransom thier already paid for product claiming all sorts of suspect problems. If there's a kickstarter for anything youre interested in, seriously reconsider. You will be cheated and they will get away with it.
lol you need to watch video's about stuff before talking about it. As the kickstarter for the omni case states to use the magnetic sheets. Even uncle Jesse's video stated this so while you get mad at your viewers for not paying attention to the video but you yourself didn't pay attention. time stamp right around 6:25
I’m not a huge fan of their approach to BAM information, going for a BAM apologist approach. They don’t really acknowledge the role they played in promoting the Kickstarters and John just attributes it to “Kickstarters are a risk” and goes on to try and paint BAM as not knowing what they were doing. “Chris is a great guy who just accidentally scammed people out of their money.” Edit: I will add that multiple channels have gone back and pinned comments talking about the current situation on their videos where they promoted BAM products. That seems like the minimum that they could do and they haven’t done that.
I was pretty sour about it last week and seeing how the discussion ultimately played out I feel completely thrown under the bus for having supported Rivenstone through the recommendations of this channel. I never I thought I'd hear such corpo : "We are monitoring the situation and waiting to see how it plays out", from the channel. Complete and total dogwater.
I'd like to point out that the subject matter ya'll were talking about at the beginning of this video: Scott currently has 104k views/5.6k likes, vs Jon's 112k views 7.7k likes. It should be obviously clear about who we like more. Scott, stop kidding yourself, you are a failure on your own - keeping riding Jon's coattails.
