I decided to test Rubio monocoat to see if a second coat makes a difference after a somewhat disappointing experience with it on a previous table I made. I tested using typical items that would encounter a table belonging to a family with kids. The results are surprising!

For the scrub, i would recommend a white scotch brite pad. The light duty cleansing pads. They are 1500 grit, should leave a nice finish. I use it often to set the sheen to my liking. Its also what i use after touch ups/repairs to match the sheen.

A few remarks: Many make the mistake to sand way too fine. That creates a fine dust that clogs the woods pores and prevents Rubio from penetrating the wood and creating a good bond and layer thickness. 180 is enough.the coat will even it out. Instead of scrubbing, just use isopropanol to clean the sharpie etc. No need to scrub.

Yes. Please test Sharpie with Isopropyl Alcohol. That works for other surfaces.

I only went to 120 on my last desk. After 2 coats it feels really smooth. It really drank up a lot in the first coat. Light maroon pad scrub between coats. The second coat definitely brought out a little more color and sheen.

You should try writing over the sharpie with dry erase marker before trying to scrub with abrasive. It may save your finnish

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) will remove sharpie and crayon with ease. So now the question is what will IPA do to Rubio?

Here's the lesson: you only give water-soluble felt pens and pencils to your children :) And you protect the surface when you're doing paint activities.

You need to use ceramics over Rubio. Two coats of Rubio changes nothing.

Nice information but a bit wordy and too long. Would have been nice to see how easy it's supposed to be to fix the finish IF you do rub it off while cleaning to aggressively.

Yes, the scrubbing pad removed the finish. But all you have to do is re-finish that section with rubio, and it's back to brand new.

I'm curious too, if I were to guess pretty easy, couple drops rubbed into the worn area and buffed to blend probably would hide it well.

Even if it's a 6ft table it wouldn't take long to scuff the whole surface with a maroon pad and refinish the entire surface but you can spot repair but it depends on how long ago the original finish was done as if you spot repair it will likely have a high sheen in that spot, natura make an exact copy of Rubio and is cheaper and it can go over Rubio.

I would be interested in a comparison of Rubio to an oil finish (tung, BLO, danish, your pick) followed by 2 coats of paste wax... cost and results, I suspect they are highly similiar

Would be interesting to see you reapply the finish where it was scrubbed off with the sponge pad. Then we can see how a repair would look as well.

I find that just the rubio is not enough. I am currently reaching out to suppliers and testing different products to put on the rubio to protect it from liquids. I found one that looks promising and makes it completely hydrophobic without damaging or changing the finish. The best part it would be cheaper than the expensive blacktail studio and blackforest coatings. Exiting times!

What about Rubio product for external walls? It seemed to make the wood hydrophobic even in prolonged conditions

Thanks, I will definitely apply two coats in my corridors and living room, those get a ton more traffic than bedroom. edit: Decided against Rubio for MANY reasons. Bona craft oil + Bona 2k is the way to go for excellent durability and colorfastness.

One coat is a almost worthless, but the second coat goes on super easy and slick due to the hard work done by the first coat that "marinates" overnight in the wood pores. Rubio is worthless without the second/third coat.
