In this video i go over why I think OPR is a competitive set of rules that dont have to be played competitively. Plus a few little stories I threw in as they came to me.

40k isn't really that competitive, IMO. The *players* are competitive at the game, absolutely, but GW has been horrible at balancing the game itself. Not to mention the new model meta. If GW couldn't skew the rules to sell models or tip the scales for melee vs ranged, elite vs horde, etc., perhaps it could be a fair game.

Balance is important, but it's not a synonym for depth, or difficulty to master. For a game to be competitive, it really just needs to have enough depth, and be hard enough to master, that people who put more time into mastery, and people who are more talented, will start to win like crazy against anyone who is not similarly talented/committed.

@@alanjackson1568 yeah no I know there are meta chasers anywhere for everything but 40k isn't chess, and the rule meddling is designed to push model sales without regard to the integrity of the game. Don't confuse the competitive nature of the players with the game itself. Example: chess is competitive because it is balanced between the players and the rules don't change every couple of months. In fact they don't change at all. Remember from 8th edition the meta for space Marines was to field cheap Scout units to make Battalions and maximize command points. 9th rolls around and while they changed the way command points were earned they also moved scouts from Troops to Elites, making the unit less viable and absolutely no one fielded them due to the plethora of better options for the limited number of elite slots one could field. So if you bought the three (or more!) sets for the meta now they sit on your shelf or on eBay. I don't think anyone plays them even now in 10th. But that's another thing with 40k not being competitive; the deliberately high price of the models themselves to create exclusivity. Cost of entry is prohibitive to competition by limiting the player base to those who can afford to play the game, which is another indicator that the rules and game itself are of secondary consideration to the model sales. Not to mention the rules themselves cost money and are quickly out of date. I understand your appeal to the strategy and talent it takes to play games like this. But OPR is more competitive by having free rules and model agnosticism. You don't have to buy their stuff and the rules aren't bent to make certain units into must haves until the next content drop. Plus they are committed to not changing the rules very often. They are game first, models second. With GW the game is simply a sales tactic.

@@alanjackson1568 btw what I'm saying isn't that what you said about the depth that is unit selection, tactics and strategy or difficulty isn't true, just that GW manipulates exactly that spirit of competition to sell more plastic and thus the game we want to play suffers because of it. This is the balance I'm talking about in 40k; rule stability and unit viability. Both are out the window in 40k for the sake of making money. You don't have that with OPR. And OPR has solved my biggest gripe with Warhammer ever by using alternating player activations. It basically is the same game without the meddling for profit, and more engaging with the aforementioned turn structure. I don't consider this peeve of mine in the competitive argument, however, since I may find it irritating it is just a fact of the game like the shooting phase or cover and terrain rules.
@alanjackson1568
@alanjackson1568 3 месяца назад
@@FiveFootFall I agree, alternating activation is better, and GW certainly messes with the rules and gear options to sell their overpriced models, no doubt about that.

I run OPR tournaments about every 3 months at my LGS. We have a lot of fun there and even have prize support through the store. The games all seem to be even and no one gets blown out.

I'm trying to nudge one of the other RU-vidrs to set up a "meta Monday" like thing for opr so we can start to get some numbers from events. I think it would be great at driving engagement
@Eric-fk5jz
@Eric-fk5jz 3 месяца назад
@@WarbossFitz That would be cool. Right now we can only fit 8 people, but the store is moving to a larger location soon. I hope to get up to 16 people after the move. It is fun to see the younger teens use Lego and childhood toys for their armies. Got to get them when they are young.

If the games all tend to be pretty even, I would say you answered the question of the video, one page rules is, not, competitive. Though, that does surprise me, as my initial impression was that many unit's in OPR are clear noob traps. I guess the internal unit balance must be better than I thought? Or everyone in your gaming group has similar math and theory crafting skill, but that's hard to believe.
@Eric-fk5jz
@Eric-fk5jz 3 месяца назад
@@alanjackson1568 Could I ask what you mean by, "noob traps"? I do not understand the terminology. I have played in many tournaments of 40k and WHFB back in the day and I would say that OPR by far is more competitive than the former. Is there math-hammer in OPR, yes very much so, but it is mitigated based on how the base rules are written. For example, by getting away from the antiquated "You Go, I Go" turn structure helps keep "Deathstar" units in check. I will say, though, that this gaming group I do have now is new to miniature war gaming. However, there are some like me that did go to large tournaments back in the day, and they were successful, but they are not able to run roughshod over the newer players, so far. This may change in the future and I reserve the right to be wrong. I hope this answers your questions. God Bless.
@alanjackson1568
@alanjackson1568 3 месяца назад
@@Eric-fk5jz Ah, when I say noob trap, I meant that some unit's looked weak compared to others. When new players bring weak unit's, those weaker unit's have become a trap. It's strange to me that you think close game = competitive. In a competitive game, the player who has the the experience/talent to be good, should win consistently over players who are not as good at the game. If the game's tends to be pretty even, despite a large experience/skill/talent gap, that sounds like a game I would call casual, not a game I would call, competitive.

40k has alot of rerolls because they want you to buy those super expensive models because “hey they’ll for sure land their attacks or make their saves.” OPR is more focused on the fun mechanics not necessarily buy X model(s). The other positive on OPR is less mental “hassle” when playing vs the dense 40k.
@FiveFootFall
@FiveFootFall 3 месяца назад
And OPR is rules first, models second which eliminates flavor-of-the-month meta manipulation.

Great video! I have to agree that this game is extremely balanced. The Real deciding factors are the dice and the skill of Movement of the players. Yup, skill of movement... blocking opponents from reaching critical areas/characters, making them travel through dangerous terrain, or just slowing them down for a turn or two.

Yesterday I played Grimdark:Fleets with my Brother, the Rules were so easy to understand that after the first Match we put together a new Army and played two more, where we would otherwise only manage 1 Game of 40k. I also scaled the whole thing to 50% so that it fits easily on a small Kitchen Table. We will definitely try the other Modes at some point.

In 30k there are no strategems only one reaction per phase which is a lot more realistic but on the other hand everything is so detailed in its rules you have to keep an eye on what everything means.

Haven’t even watched your video and I can answer yes by the battlereps I’ve had in the past 6 months of playing with meta chasers. This game is solid if you set it up right. Edit: I love your reasoning for your definition for competitive. Real combat doesn’t give a fuck about balancing and logic. Reacting to situations in real time makes it closer to a competitive simulator.

They have easy access to every tool, anti-infantry, anti-tank, anti-hero etc. They don't have much of a faction identity because they can be horde, elite, monster-focused, ambush-focused, shooting-focused, melee focused, or stealth-focused and you never really know what to expect when fighting them.

It's a running joke at this point 😅. The alien hives have lots of tools and can make a strong army list if they know what their opponent is.

What makes a wargame realistic when it comes to dice is does it makes sense... if no one can hit each other and not atleast be suppressed when egaged then it isn't realistic the same with the opposite where they whipe off the board each other to the man... So to be realistic you need a balance and nearly gurrted hits is that though personally I don't like free re rolls eteheir they are a tool in game dev the same as the dice.

By the compeive means not being well versed in the meta as plenty of people are not competive yet can tell you what is best to field... But what competive is is when you play to win even with favoites... If you go to a terment as a noncompetive player you are being highly toxic as you are they not to play the game but waste peoples time... which isn't cool.
