Is OpenAI still open?

OpenAI, now mostly known from GPT-3 / GPT-2 is in a very unique position as a company. I tried to cover this topic as objective and neutral as possible, still, everything said here is my opinion. I am a big fan of many things produced by OpenAI, like GPT-3, GPT-2, PPO. Their algorithm (PPO) is something I use all the time, so it's not like I don't have a bias. Please, let me know what you think!

Dont worry, they will release gpt-3 source code for free after GPT-6 developed

Steps for AI companies: 1.Create an AI Lab with a lot of hype and some big names. Raise hundreds of millions of funding. Differentiate yourself from other labs with some philosophical ideas to start. Greedily pick up as many data scientists as you can in the area you operate. 2.Train them so that they can successfully deliver AI research projects. Wait to get bought out by a large enterprise because they couldn't build their own AI team.

I agree. In my opinion their move to create a paid api was still inline with their vision as everyone had equal access. And there are undoubtedly large costs associated for running gpt3. The pricing here however is another issue as it could be argued that only large companies could pay for it. But a breakdown of where the money goes would go a long way to resolve this. The deal with Microsoft however is completely against their vision in my opinion. It makes it hard for me to thrust OpenAI in the future.

100% agree. Microsoft has such a sinister history - we've forgotten too fast how hated Gates/Microsoft was in the 90s/00s. this completely shattered my faith in Open AI.

No, no it isn't. Open Source means you share the source. If I can't see the source code, then its not open, it's closed.

@Orr Burgel yes but they can remove API access at any moment. That’s not really open.
@jellohunter7981
@jellohunter7981 3 года назад
@Orr Burgel Google is **free** not **open**. Open AI said they would democratize AI. Locking it behind a API is not democratic.
@jellohunter7981
@jellohunter7981 3 года назад
@Orr Burgel Are you saying Google and Facebook are open? They or closed systems. "Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price." - GNU

@Orr Burgel I was voicing a concern over Open AI, and you accused me of crying over the internet. If someone disagrees with you, is that crying over the internet?

Very interesting video! Regarding the question at the end, we can only assume that Microsoft has profit as its true priority, and so we should only expect to see whatever security is necessary to avoid intrusion and liability. Really love your channel, Keep it up!

Safety was the original argument made to make the source code public, so that 'no single company or government controls general AI'. Now it's the new argument to keep it's source code closed. And small companies or individual researchers wouldn't be able to profit from the code without an API? Why not offer both, an API and the source code?

Not nearly enough people seem to be asking this question. Thanks for the video. I couldn't believe that they granted rights to MS... that seemed to completely go against their mission.. but after watching your video I can see this was a slow migration away from the purity of their mission over a few years. I think there is also an argument to the danger of this system being freely available... but yea I'm not really sure how you deal with that one.

I'm a bit late to the party here but this is a very interesting topic. I wonder if at some point they got so focused on AI behavior that they forgot human behavior. If you have exclusive control over something that is a massive advantage, how many people actually give up that advantage completely and utterly? Exceptionally few people in all of human history. There is also the very fundamental market behavior that being the first to create a technology does not guarantee success. For example, email, AOL, was the first email program available to the public but now it has been completely replaced by Gmail and others. They took what AOL did and expanded on it so much that AOL could not compete, and now AOL is completely irrelevant. I think they know this, and it does play a part in their decisions. I guess only time will tell what happens next.

OpenAI might be one of the companies on the forefront of AI research, but it's definitely not alone there. Deepmind, Google brain project and others are right there too. So we need to trust the moral of not just 1 company, but any of these. Because any of them has very real chance to win the AGI race. Not to mention the Chinese ones... In my opinion, SingularityNET seems like the most trustworthy one. But there is no way to make AGI safe for humans, except via brain-machine interfaces, as the ones developed at Neuralink.

another important question is on what hardware does GPT-3 even run? I assume they use the chips developed for Tesla cars?

See I get this argument, but the hand we are trying to keep it out of are large companies like amazon or face book. By closing the AI Behind a api and only letting other large companies in, it is the exact opposite of what we want. Also telling everyone how to do it allows bigger companies to profit and keeping it out of the hands of the small companies or indivduals.

@dihydromonoxide1032
@dihydromonoxide1032 2 года назад
If china wanted to make their own, they could easily. OpenAI Already released how to make it, by locking it behind a api it only hurts the individual and small companies.
@user-kw9cu
@user-kw9cu Год назад
I bet China has similar stuff internally they just don't reveal it. And making API only available to "white" people (US and Europe) is a racist move from OpenAI.
