One thing that might brighten your day: the sentiment of: In the past everything was better, chivalry is dead, the world is gong to sh!t3, Is a old as time it self When you'd say in the past people were much more optimistic, that is mostly in the La Belle Epoque, and the 50's/60's They'd be more of the exception rather then the rule. When you compare one century to the next or previous, things are more the same then differed(compared to predictions) The biggest changes really are rich people are richer, there are less poor in total (the poor are not less poor) and everything is more convenient and clean
@cl8804
@cl8804 11 месяцев назад
if there is any single sense in which indeed there are "less poor people, in total", it would be within some western countries (and even that's being charitable to you (not the poor, alas))

True I think I was thinking in a weird way when you count from classical history, the middle ages, enlightenment era, industrial era etc etc, there were less poor in europe (the west, western-europe, or the dumb idea of the "first world" in the cold war and many names beside) Mainly over the backs of the rest of the world

11:14 A Russian came up with dystopian fiction? Who would've thought? WHO?! Speaking of "The Running Man", I recommend Johnny Depp's directorial debut "The Brave" (1997) in which he starred and co-wrote the script based on a novel. Native American in his late teens, alcoholic, previously a convict is convinced he has nothing to offer his wife and two children and agrees to be killed on camera (aka star in a snuff film) for $50 000. He thinks his family is better off without him and the money would get them out of the shithole (place and overall situation) they live in. It's one of those "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck..." movies, difficult to watch.

Why do so many future dystopias revolve around overpopulation? If you expanded a major city (say, London) to enormous size, like the size of New Zealand, it could have a population of two billion people. The Earth is big, yo.
@elainehelmont4647
@elainehelmont4647 2 года назад
Or you could just implement better natality control laws. Overpopulation isn't really what makes me afraid of the future,this is an easy problem to solve. What bothers me most is both destruction of enviroment and unrestrained power in the hands of private corporations.

It's definitely interesting with how long we've been in this panny d (seemingly long) and what life looked like pre panny d, what will life be like post AND with it will we all start healing or would things just get worse i.e all of 2020, it's definitely thought provoking. But stillpotential positives and ow , yeah its very us surveilance shown too. It also shows people that ar lost, and very action heroey, but not all, and how people matter. How lost people get together and change the world, bit by bit, while taking on the big player. An it even has the rigit pacifist humanist dude aying " I played by the rules, and i lost everything, now i wont." And while the show gneraly is a lot prserving status wuo, it ends with that you cant stop progess, and yeah collateral happens, and change is inevitable. And maybe we shoul consider stop playing be the rule and make our own. And 12 monkeys is , and both are . they have hope, but so good with dytopias. oh and pychopass, hich remonds me on poos camera systems, somehow. Oh vr could be really cool and can be. Writers like Frank Herbert see in the future that as technology improves Humanity leaps backward not forward where Democratic institutions will be a thing of the past and Technocratic Feudalism will be a thing of the future where everyone will forever be peasants owned by the state. And for other writers, the future seems even bleaker with the fears of Fascism making a huge comeback. And with the Hunger Games analogy about financial distress and institutional corruption. I am reminded of a Horror novel that I am writing where it is both Dystopian and Post Apocalyptic. Where it states what led to the end of the world was Fascism making a comeback. During the W Bush years, I used to have nightmares where in the future America becomes a Theocratic Christian Fascist Dictatorship and starts a second civil war at home and World War 3 abroad. I'm hoping that future doesn't come to fruition.

The way I see it, we should add a new universal rule to every technological/scientific step we take, is to carefully consider and test if said advancement will negatively affect the environment and wildlife within it. Flying cars may be cool, but if said flying cars immediate usage causes the extinction or turmoil of a part of the natural world, they're not worth it for our own hubris.

Short answer before watching the video: not as much as our past is Edit: the world is concretely better now than it has ever been in the past. Life expectancies everywhere have increased (the life expectancy in a poor country in Africa is currently comparable to that of the 1950s US), studies have shown that the current “upper class” is the most empathetic in history, and work to purchasing power is now more efficient than ever (with the only exception being housing, obviously a big deal, but more the result of regulation making affordable housing below middle-class standards illegal). “Freedom” as a concept in Western culture was only really developed about 200 years ago; prior to that every society was a dystopia by modern standards. This is obviously not to say that we should not seek to further improve the situation (of course we should, I support universal healthcare and UBI as obvious starting points), but any doomsaying indicates a misunderstanding or disregard of how bad our past actually was (and that’s even before you get into the “isms”). We will need post-capitalism soon (capitalism mostly works because people have value as capital, and therefore negotiating power; ai advances risk making people redundant, giving us truly no power in society), but we are on track for achieving that, and as long as social progress continues to advance on pace with technological progress, we should be fine (in other words, stop panicking and keep working on meaningful change).

As an American I can't describe our current system as anything but a dystopia. I've tried to work as an activist but the powers that be are too strong. There is no change coming and no hope for any of it ever here. Scientific advancement is wondrous, but it will all be co opted for the advancement of the wealthy exclusively.

There is a lot that can go wrong when Computers are able to use resources to become better computers. But it's similar to Zelda: BOTW where machines were trusted and turned on Hyrule. Civilization is always advancing towards a dystopian future. That's why throughout history you constantly see this ne erending cycle of rapid growth and expansion, followed by stagnation, followed by an increase in lawlessness due to decadent, immorality, and a lack of social cohesion, followed inevitably by anarchy and societal collapse. The only real problem is that this time around, we are looking at the tail end of this cycle coming to fruition on a scale as of yet unseen in history, as several major nation are on the verge of major civil upheaval, all of whose nation collectively cover the majority of several continents, and are all facing these situations at roughly the same time. Also, with our world's globally interconnected economy, if just one or two of these cnations go belly up, it could potentially start a domino effect that leaves the entire world in a state of chaos beyond even our most horrific nightmares, with the threat of global annihilation being all to real, as some of the countries that would find themselves in dire straights would no doubt be willing to put their safety and stability above that of their peers, threatening one or more nations with death by nuclear fire, and we also know exactly where that would lead, since the existence of the MAD protocols are common knowledge at this point.
@elainehelmont4647
@elainehelmont4647 2 года назад
Lol civil revolt is a joke though for any country in the world. In case of an emergency if a country really wants they can send the army against their own people and normal civilians stand 0% chance to resist against armed soldiers. This civil war revolution is a very stupid fantasy because if the state really wants they can end you in seconds.

This was an excellent video. It's just really hard to think of a positive future. Capitalism (the employee - employer relationship focused on solely reproducing capital - not private ownership and markets) is dying which I think is good. The problem is that it's hell bent on taking civilization with it. Climate change is a massive issue, but we also have the resurgence of fascism throughout the globe. In the U.S we have the Republicans who are basically a fascist party at this point, they idealize an imagined past, are feverish nationalists, constantly state that minorities and immigrants are inherently weak yet an existential threat to our country. We also have the Democrats who are basically just neoliberal 80's Republicans who don't do anything to address, and in fact enable the Republicans. They are preferable to Republicans, but still part of the problem. The popularity of Bernie is really reassuring, but the establishment squandered him twice and he's just a Scandinavian style social democrat. He wasn't even advocating for worker co-ops which would have actually been socialist. I hate that the right wing works together so well while the left is scattered. Nazis will back Republicans who back Israel, yet a lot of socialists won't back social democrats like Bernie and AOC. I feel like it's far easier for fascism to take root than socialism despite the fact that most people want to have more ownership and control over their workplace. It's far easier to divide the proletariat than it is to bring us together. It's easy to imagine what a socialist society will look like. It's just hard to imagine it actually happening in the real world. I wanna be clear that I mean socialist as in the workers own and democratically operate the means of production, not something like the Soviet Union or China. These states refer to themselves as communist (which is funny given communism is anarchic) but they are state capitalist.
