As of 2020 three were roughly 700K law enforcement officers in the US*** Taking your 50, and bills 1000 as the accurate figures... 50/700K = 7x10(-5) 1000/330M = 3x10(-6) Police officer is more likely to be killed by the civilian than the reverse.

Sam's right about RU-vid. I watch a cop body cam channel somewhat frequently, I've seen hours and hours of cops pleading with most often black women who are outright challenging them and saying they don't have to comply with their orders, followed by a string of disrespectful insults. The cops lay it out very clearly, "Ma'am, I'm trying to work with you, this is the law, this is what you did, and this is what is going to happen if you don't calm down and listen to what I need you to do." Yet miraculously when they resist verbally and then ultimately physically and find themselves on the ground crying, they have no sense of understanding how they're the one in the wrong. I guarantee a bunch of people will respond to this to demonize the police and talk about the time their cousin Tyrell was doing "absolutely nothing" and got pepper sprayed and arrested. Go ahead if it makes you feel better but i won't read or respond to it, only suckers read responses and waste their day on them.

I have a stepbrother who quit the police department because of false accusations. The way he put it is he could have fought the situation and won BUT the court cost would have been enormous and no matter what his reputation was tarnished FOREVER. The idea of "police brutality" is ridiculous! Yes just like everything there are power abusive morons that get media attention. Where's the media attention for the cops who die at the hands of malicious people? Where's the media coverage of an officer who survived 20+ years? Same Harris’ solution is that 12 year old Jamir Rice did not understand how to get arrest within 3 seconds of a police pulling up to his play ground and gunning him down. That 22 year old John Crawford should’ve understood how to get arrested while buying a toy gun at Walmart and screaming to the police that the gun was a toy while being gunned down. That Philander Castile should have known how to get arrested during a simple traffic stop when notified the police that he had a legally concealed weapon in his glove compartment and the police murdered him for reaching for it after ordering him to hand it to them. Maybe his 4 year old daughter in the back seat while police unload bullets into her father should have known how to be arrested. Same Harris’ solutions to this senseless killing is to train a subset of citizens in how to deescalate police so they don’t get murdered rather than train the police who are professionals in how to interact with the public without murdering them. Harris who is always championing logic and reason is totally unreasonable and illogical here as he panders to a right leaning audience. Hitch would be embarrassed by him.

I've appreciated Sam Harris' intellect since I first became aware of him. I even attended a talk at CalTech for the Moral Landscape. I generally agree with Sam's positions, but in terms of race issues and conduct of law enforcement, he's a bit tone deaf, and his logic is questionable. I used to be an avid listener of his podcast until he commented on the January 6th riots, stating that people who were saying if it had been a BLM protest it would have been a bloodbath. Sam said this was ridiculous and there would have been no difference. Sam couldn't have been more wrong. That's when I stopped listening to his podcast. As far as his logic here, saying police misconduct isn't really an issue because police have only killed 1000 individuals a year, his reasoning is flawed. If our only criteria for police misconduct is the yearly body count, what he's missing are the HUNDREDS of DAILY instances of police brutally and unlawfully assaulting people, violating constitutional rights and intentionally lying to citizens about the law. A person does not have to end up dead for there to be a serious issue with police misconduct - and there absolutely is. You can watch thousands of videos on RU-vid documenting this. I think people are too quick to defer to Sam's intellectual prowess and just accept everything he says as the truth.

Nothing is more annoying than people with strong opinions on things that they easily have the means to go learn about, yet they just flap their ignorant and arrogant lips. What he is asking for isn’t practical. Cops don’t get paid much, and the fact they do as well as they do frankly shocks me. Of course we all remember the bad videos. What we really need is body cameras that are super reliable and cannot be turned off. If they are turned off by the cop they should get in serious trouble.

Are police officers pulling the trigger too quickly? You have to look at it case by case. Sometimes they do pull the trigger too quickly. But it is very rare that a police officer is unjustified. For someone who talks a lot about being logical and considering the facts, this is so reductive of Sam, but that seems to be his shtick. 1. Bill is absolutely right, you shouldn't have to kiss police ass to live. If you have no reason to suspect you've indicated violent intent, a police officer should be able to deduce the same. In no other ostensibly life-saving profession is the life of the prospective savior prioritised to the degree it is with cops. They act as though they're doing us a favor (remember Uvalde). If firefighters followed the same ethos, far more people would die of fires. The job has occupational hazards that you cannot necessairly mitigate. That's why training matters. 2. American cops are both trained for a shorter period of time than their European counterparts and are specifically trained to be jumpy as bill said. The average American cop cannot meaningfully differentiate leth intent from a mental breakdown that just resembles it. By sheer stupidity, they kill people with mental illness. 3. Lethal police brutality is the worst thing cops can do to innocent people but it isn't the only thing that they do. This is what I mean when I say Sam is reductive, he hasn't even addressed the matter of police harassment and when he does it's to defend racial profiling in a society where black neighborhoods are underdeveloped, overpoliced by cops with all the wrong training. If yky think they're right to arrest these people, than why do relatively few of the arrests actually result in a conviction? It's because theyre not accountable for it. Probable cause has become plausible deniability.

@@lSomeRandomGuyl "He's stating pure facts" It's not clear to me that you can distinguish a fact from an opinion. Because Harris here states about 2 facts (the 1st of which he doesn't source to anything, so I'm inclined to even take that as only his own personal guess. I.e. his opinion), which are "most of that thousand are in the process of trying to kill the police", and his thing about people turning around or being careless with their hands and that creating grounds for cops to be weary. That's it. Everything else is opinion: that "the problem is people don't understand how to get arrested", the dismissal of responsibility on the part of the cops because of what people may inadvertently do when arrested, the chalking up of the cops that get filmed unequivocally abusing their power to a few bad apples that just shouldn't be cop (while forgetting about how these cops will nonetheless systematically be defended by the rest of the police force to the bitter end unless there's such media outrage over a particular case that they're left with no choice), the claim that "the mainstream cop view is I don't wanna be on youtube so I'm not even gonna go over there and police the situation", let alone the claim that this is a significant cause of "now we have this escalating crime problem". Again. Very few factual statements vs much opinion built around those factual statements. That's without counting are just the choice of which "fact" to bring into the discussion itself originates from his own opinion on which figures are relevant. Again, I could've known what his position was gonna be because that's been his bread and butter for almost 2 decades now. Cherry pick facts and build up arguments around those facts to justify any instance of violence by the US govt.

I really enjoyed this video. However, I feel like it is too easy for those who are not in the police force to sit back and judge when a policeman should have decided to shoot or not. They are in a potential life-or-death scenario with a person they don't know almost anything about and where any second they could be attacked and killed, which is a terrifying situation. Police don't have X-Ray Vision to see if the person in question has a concealed weapon or have superhuman reflexes to see in slow motion to make sure if someone is a threat or not. They are vulnerable, fallible humans like everyone else. Great video though, I enjoyed both Sam and Bill's perspectives.

If this is your perspective, how can you see Bill’s side of things? Sam is stating the facts. There are very few people actually killed by police. 1000 a year means less than 100 a month, and that’s over an entire country. with tens of thousands of law-enforcement, and thousands of crimes daily. Also, it is common knowledge that police have a split second to make a decision. If criminals would just comply, they would live. They would have to go to jail, but they would live. Instead, police are forced to make a split second reaction to the issue. Are there bad police officers? Of course. There are bad eggs in every realm of society. But, they are in the extreme extreme minority. Almost all police officers are there for one reason, and that is to protect and serve.

Go and actually experience being in combat with firearms Bill, then come back and blanket judge the police for "shooting too soon". This does happen, of course, but it's not the norm in the US. Could the statistics be better? Yes. Would it happen less if US police forces were less militarized and the general public had less access to firearms? Yes. If US police went through a federal standardized training program & Longer required training would it happen less? Yes. In each case, the officers were within their rights to do what they did and I never had any issues. I have several black friends, who I’ve known my whole life who cannot say the same thing. They grew up where I did in the Midwest, lived a similar lifestyle as me, and all of us worked similar jobs and so on. None of them has had the similar, nonevent experiences that I had with law enforcement. All of them tell me they’ve have 10 interactions a year, every year. Most of time they are stopped to check their ID, the police will say they were driving too slow, or erratic, or because the cop says he hasn’t seen them before and wanted to know what their business is, and the big one is that there was a robbery by two black men nearby and we need your ID. The fact that these guys tell me they have family in the Deep South, East Coast, West Coast, everywhere, and the same exact thing happens to them tells me this is a systemic problem with law enforcement. In the bible Jesus said a man must be born again or he will not go to Heaven. A lot of people think this means they should merely believe in him. We see so often in our world today an abrupt end to people's lives. And it becomes increasingly clear that when we die nothing else matters aside from our relationship with Jesus Christ. That is the reality of God's creation whether we like it or not. This life though engulfed with distraction is nothing more than a test. He is the creator and we are merely his creation, Here to live on his terms and happily at that. John 3:16 Says for God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever would believe on him would not perish but have everlasting life. But John 2: 23 says Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. 24But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. One must square how one verse says to believe and be saved. And one verse says he did not commit himself to everyone who believes. It's crucial to think about these things because they are Heaven and hell issues. Jesus said 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. This is a clear warning from Jesus for everyone who reads the bible. We cannot rest on our laurels and assume all is well. Any follower of Jesus, or any disciple or learner of Jesus has come to know this as a serious reality that we in fact will never die. We will spend absolutely forever in one of two locations Heaven or hell. The difference in these destinies are stark. The difference comes down to seriousness about faith in Jesus as well as actions. We see time and time again it is the doers of God's will that are justified. Not simply the sayers. This is not a critique it is simply an urging to take the matters serious as we all know eternity is coming. It has nothing to do with demanding perfection it is only saying be absolutely sure you are ready for that day. We can look to the bible to find evidences of salvation: 17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; So one question would be have you become a new creature? My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 7If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 8But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. The second question would be are you disciplined by God? Has God scourged you? Bc when we talk about a relationship with Jesus we are talking rather literally. There is discipline and there is scourging upon entering the Kingdom of God. Can you imagine being scourged by the creator of the Universe? But if you are in fact a child of God on the way to Heaven you have been. You will have repented and mourned over your past sinful life and even present failures. Hence Jesus' sermon on the mount saying Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. And blessed are you who are hungry now for you shall be full. But woe to you who laugh now for you will weep and mourn. And woe to you who are full for your will hunger. You see when you become a Christian the Holy Ghost is your prosecutor and he will teach you how to live and he will show you how bad you failed before he received you. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. The Holy Ghost either prosecutes us now and we weep and course correct or the Holy Ghost will prosecute us in the next life and that will be eternal punishment. Which is why the bible says there will be weeping and knashing of teeth where the fire is never quenched and the worm dieth not. In hell our conscience will accuse us for all eternity that we missed the mark and we did not fulfill our responsibility to God while we were alive. The bible says don't walk as fools but as wise redeeming the time bc the days are evil. But understanding what the will of the Lord is. Do you know what the will of the Lord is?19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. I plead with everyone to be sure you are saved. People say "they’ve been saying he was coming back forever" but this verse answers to that 2 Peter 3:9 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The bible states clearly the Lord is ready the avenge the evil doer and sadly for who-ever has not fully come to Christ will be in hell with the worst of the worst unfortunately. They will forgo eternal bliss. 10“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things? 11Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, and yet you people do not accept our testimony. 12If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?… God sends forth his messengers to urge people to take heed and repent and come fully to Christ Luke 16:22 the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. If we truly come to Christ he will reveal his will to us which is plain in scripture. But if we continue to ignore the gospel message we are essentially rejecting the sacrifice of God’s only son on the cross for our sins and our punishment will be profound and will never end. I pray that everyone will examine themselves to be sure they are really in the faith. What else really matters? Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; 6Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

There's an even simpler solution: get rid of guns! You know why in countries like Germany (my country) you don't hear about police shootings? I'm 34 years old and while of course I've feared for my safety at times while alone at night - and have gotten in some dicey situations - I've never once feared, or even thought about, someone pulling a gun on me. Another simple solution: train your cops! Again, in my country (Germany) it takes around 3 years (not weeks!) to fully become a cop. Maybe take some time to filter out the trigger happy people from the more serious ones and train your people more to handle more complicated situations. But yeah, I'd say the most important thing is getting rid of guns. Go content Definitely addresses so many issues that just seem to get swept under the rug and this country has to start coming up with solutions instead of putting it off or there isn't going to be a country country anymore so it's up to us the come together and fix the problems 1 by 1 thanks keep it moving and all you can have is hope and action help its going to take everybody remember it's ok to agree to disagree and at the end of the day were all Americans that's the bottom line Nothing will get done in this country until we unite but I don't think this country is ready yet I hope it is sooner than later
