I walk with my fiancé holding hands and other PDA all the time. The only homophobia on the street I've ever encountered was from a group of Macho Spanish stag party tourists.

As an avid clubber and friend of the community, the only instances of anti gay activity I have seen in Prague are from tourists. Prague is pretty progressive. I think locals really don't care if someone is gay. Starting Jan. 1, 2025 gay couples have the same legal rights as married couples. As it is, none of my friends in Prague are even married. Prague and CR are atheist.
@serebii666
@serebii666 Месяц назад
Correction - gay couples still wouldn't have the same rights even after the civil union revision goes into effect. Joint adoption is still not possible and on a fundamental constitutional procedure basis, with the civil union law being a basic law while marriage is a constitutional law, civil unions have far less protections from being simply superseded by a simple majority vote by some future governing coalition outlawing them, than revoking marriage itself. Moreover the change is not retroactive - all the civil unions that have been preformed up to now will need to be re-preformed in order to gain the new rights, the change is not automatic, which means more unnecessary bureaucracy and expense burden.

@@serebii666 The difference here in Oz re gay marriage is, the 'atheist' thing is not a real aspect. Most of us got married in a civil ceremony but our laws made all marriages equal. Only some progressive churches will marry gay couples but you can leave out Catholics, some Anglican, Synagogues and Mosques. Interestingly as time moved on it has not become a topic of conversation, it just is. I wish you well in the Czech Republic with your changes. Hopefully they move to complete equality.

I live as open gay whole my live in CZ, due to job I'm also changing places from big cities to very rural areas and I had never ever had a single negative encounter living with my BF and be open before classmates, colleagues or neighbors. Czech are bit of conservative (so you also don't see a classic couples kissing much in public) but also quite a open-minded or at least minding their own business in many cases.
@Aggoenix

What? Classic couples kissing and openly showing affection is something i see absolutely daily in Czechia since i was born the same as in Spain/Germany/UK where i lived and studied. People are kissing on tram, metro, parks, streets and noone even very old people gives absolutely any fuck. People were openly kissing even decades ago during Commie times. This was absolutely never any issue here and i have never heard anyone provoked by this. Czechs are even very liberal and chilled in sex. The sex culture here is one of the most liberal/relaxed in all Europe in fact, even Spain and Germany ive considered a bit more "private" in this.

I think mostly we genuinely don’t care - people should just live their lives how they want. The fact that we are not a religious country probably helps.
@clapita00
@clapita00 26 дней назад
You can see there is still a lot of internalised homophobia. "We do not hold hands, but we can live here" "only tourists show off". I think this exemplifies Czech mentality very well: do not politically engage in anything controversial, but enjoy your private life.

I am elderly and most Eastern European countries struggled with gay acceptance. Prague had its bad points especially around the station, but in the main the Czechs are a gentle, and very human people. They also had ( have ? ) a great literature, and a balanced human cinema.

I avoid holding hands with my husband in Brussels city center or around Porte de Namur as there is a lot of homophobia from african or north african origin men. No media talks about it

Homophobia is every where. It's global. Sure some countries have gay marriage and are more accepting of gays there still is a dislike of us. I'm older generation, and it was hard back in the 1970s/ 80s when I was in my youth.

I agree with you. I am a senior in the USA. I am still closeted to most acquaintances. Also in the 80s and 90s, I lost quite a few friends to AIDS including my brother.

@ffoster477 I'm sorry to hear of your losses. I remember that period of time , with the horrible aids epidemic. I think back to the past now im in old age , and feel sad . It was hard . I never heard anything positive about gay men then. I couldn't be myself. I started work 50 years ago and remember hearing unkind things said about us. I was full of fear of being found out. It was so damaging. Im okay today , I prefer living on my own. It's good to see the young generation more accepting of homosexuality now.

Homophobia is like racism, it's a human aberration and it is all over the world. In some places it is hidden by laws or by education, but once they're broken those aberrations come out again and again.

Poland outside of big cities is much, much worse. Of course, outside of big cities is less open minded anywhere, but the hugely conservative and Catholic element in Poland definitely means less tolerance in Poland. And non-Polish gay couples I know who lived in Poland certainly found much, much more judgment in Poland than the Czech Republic.

I wouldn’t say there are not many homophobes in Czech Republic, but I think Czech mentality helps a lot. After living here for 12 years I have noticed that Czech tend to be passive agressive and if they do express their unsatisfaction with you - they can’t handle confrontation. I am straight, but an ally as I have many lgbtq+ friends and have seen many times people here making some “jokes” at them or commenting and rolling eyes, but if you ask them to repeat or expose them publicly they avoid further confrontation

Hi, I am Czech mtf trans person. My experiences are more positive than negative, and Prague is friendly towards us. The younger generations understand us and treat us normally, but a problem might be with the older people. They stare at me in public transport a bit, but i've never had someone try to attack me because I'm trans in czechia. Our government has finally passed a law that we will be able to change the gender even without castration, we were one of the last countries in Europe that did not have it. So thats nice. There are relatively few sexologists in the Czech Republic, so waiting times are long. Thats all i think.
