I feel like people don’t want to call pretty privilege for what it is like colorism, fat phobia, desirability, etc because they don’t want to have a conversation about how those three factors right there determine someone’s status in society. Those are my thoughts though.

Yes same here too like featurism like I noticed people call JT ugly but Asian doll pretty both dark skin both black women but they have different facial features same for texturism I noticed I get a lot of compliments on my hair at work but the ones I typically get from black people usually they say something like oh your hair is really pretty then say you have that good grade of hair it makes me feel extremely weird also I feel like any hair texture is pretty when you treat it right I'm not even type 3 my hair is 4a4b at most even my skin gets complimented a lot but usually only because of the complexion and that's it because its like damn so you saying if I looked one way or the other I wouldn't be cute.?

No fatphobia especially is just a buzzword people like to throw out because they cant handle the reality of being told they are unhealthy.

One of my good friends falls on this good looking zone. And she has definitely gotten opportunities from her looks. But so many times I've seen her become friends with a new person and then they ask her out after like a month. And then she would turn them down and they would cut her off entirely. So I could see it messing with your ability to know why people are befriending you.

This is a perfect example on how it is being considered conventionally attractive!! Great example!

Flip that around and a lot of these pretty girls will not want to be associated with somebody because they aren’t a certain standard of looks

With zendaya she does have pretty privilege but that didn’t make her famous. Disney helped her get in the door but it was her talent and fashion style that got her to breakthrough. When you think of zendaya you think of her fashion style and acting. Also she doesn’t have the curvy body that equates to the privilege, and is often called out for her looks without makeup. I’ve heard people say she’s ugly and looks like a skeleton, when she is naturally beautiful with her face and body. With zendaya it’s more of colorism than pretty privilege even though she is beautiful.

Reminds me of Hyunjin from Stray Kids . Hyunjin is ridiculously beautiful and in his trainee days he worked so hard on his dancing skills and when he struggled someone told him " don't worry , you are pretty so don't work so hard " or something like that and it really hurt him . He was working hard on his talents and people subject him to just his appearance , people stated that he could make it without effort and people questioned why he would work so hard when his good looks could easily get him far . I feel like this is the downside of being beautiful , no one takes you or your work seriously.

Because of Adele’s previous weight she wasn’t considered conventionally attractive completely, but Adele also has a doll matinee idol face. If she was an ethnic-looking Black girl with the same voice or better, she wouldn’t be famous. Point blank.

I’m from the same country as Rita Ora. The thing is, in my part of Europe (especially Albania) she’s not really thought to be as pretty as she is in America with both white and black people. So I think that has also helped her due to americas beauty standards being different to Europe’s. ( I hope this this makes sense sorry 💀💀)

Such a good point that people who don't consider themselves conventionally attractive find roles where they are hidden. It starts at a young age - in school, pretty privilege creates a positive environment that can foster confidence and opportunity. For people who aren't conventionally attractive, the opposite can happen. It can shatter a young person's self-esteem and cause them to withdraw, not seek opportunities, not socialize, etc. I am blonde, blue-eyed, and relatively thin, and can definitively say that those factors have contributed in a major way to my social, romantic, and professional successes. Most of the time, people attribute positive qualities to you that you haven't really demonstrated (halo effect). On the flip side, people have underestimated me. I had a male-dominated major in college and even had one guy tell me that I only got good grades by flirting with professors (I did not). I've questioned whether I was hired for my first job out of college because my boss liked the way I looked. Although that can feel shitty, at the end of the day, my looks have opened many doors and closed none. I definitely agree that pretty privilege is real and can relate to a lot of the experiences you shared.

I'm 100% agreed with you about pretty privilege because it's does exist cause they want a ideal of a beautiful woman (who is wh!T€ or non black woman) the same body type like us black woman but don't care for us being talented singers or actresses and another example like: Cassie who was a singer at that time but the only reason she got some opportunities from people especially Sean Combs because of her rascally ambitious and it's no shade towards her it is what it is same thing to my girl Saweetie, even though she not the best lyrical but she can model tho .

me personally I feel like I’m attractive buttt only in like a “lesbian” way if that makes sense. I am a lesbian, and I feel like only other wlw girls have ever found me pretty. Someone outside of that group would be very unlikely to think i am attractive even in a non romantic way. And I’ve definitely not always been this way. Growing up I was always the ugly one in the group and I’ve changed extremely and have only ever been considered pretty by anyone this year

@@2KellyJoy just because the black community doesn’t, doesn’t mean every other community considers me light skin.
