Is PRIVATEER the Best American Rum Distillery?

I picked up this bottle of 5-year-old Privateer Rum bottled for K&L Wines a while back and finally sat down to give it a taste! I've heard from multiple rum people that Privateer is the best American rum distillery, but there are so many other rum distilleries in the US that I haven't tried. Do you think it lives up to that name? Regardless, Privateer is doing some great things for American rum... they promote transparency in rum and all of their rums are additive-free!
Privateer Letters of Marque "The Private Pirate" 5 year old Rum:
- 57.4% ABV, normally $70
- Grade A molasses from Guatemala
- Fermented using proprietary yeast blend for 6 days
- Double distilled
- Aged for 5 years in new American oak barrel

I believe some small craft distillers and backyard distillers make rum to off set their bourbon making. Possibly not legal not sure but I’ve seen private bottles around. I’m guessing it’s just like moonshine but flavored? I’m more of a whiskey guy but am looking into sipping rum. Great review and I didn’t know about this brand. Enjoy!!

It's funny, rum is a lot easier to get into when you like whiskey than people assume! I think you'll have an easy time enjoying rum! Definitely check out Privateer and let me know what you think!

Why would that be illegal? Tons of craft distillers make gin and vodka while they wait on their Bourbons to age

Craft distilling is definitely legal! But depending on where you live in the world, home distillation isn't haha. So you're right, there's nothing illegal about craft distillers making rum (or gin or vodka) as their bourbons age!

My favorite Privateer is the un-aged release from Habitation (2020). The others are good, but find them kind of boring. Only thing I've tried from Roulaison is their overproof which thought was wonderful. Ko Hana and Kuleana are doing some really interesting stuff, and Just Rum out of OR I think is producing some nice things.

I wish we were able to try some unaged Privateer at the Rum Curious event... that would have been really cool to see what the rum tastes like before aging. I haven't heard of Just Rum, so thanks for bringing it to my attention! I'll check them out!

Kuleana, and Kohana are doing great things. Cardinal Spirts has a 5 yo, Siesta Key makes some decent stuff, and the elder statesman Maggie’s farm. As mentioned further up Roulison is doing some great stuff as well.

These are great examples of American rum producers making delicious rums!

Are you interested in lower 48 rums? Or does American Rums include Hawaii (Koloa), Puerto Rican rums, and Virgin Island Rum. Bayou rum from Louisiana.

American rums definitely include Hawaii... We can include PR and the US Virgin Islands too! I haven't had Bayou Rum! Any of their bottles in particular that I should try?

If we're talking abount American rum I feel like Puerto Rico has to be part of the conversation! There's a bunch of cool new artisanal distilleries down there which I'm really curious about. As for Privateer, I'm torn. At one point you had folks like Maggie Campbell there really pushing for more experimentation on the distillation side of things, but these days they really seem to be pushing hard for a bourbon-like profile. I do understand - that profile probably sells well - but I also just don't find it very "special." My favorite American rum distilleries right now, that I've tried anyhow, are actually a handful centered around New Orleans. I would point to Roulaison in particular (and not just because Andrew there let me interview him last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3rrfdGXDYNg.html ), but there's a bunch.

Oooh yes, Puerto Rico! I feel like between PR and Hawaii we could find some really great gems! I agree with Roulaison!! Andrew is very cool (how did I miss your interview video with him?? Watching now!) and I wanted to make a video about touring the distillery a year ago, but I'm so bad at actually documenting any part of the tours that I go on... I like to ask questions and focus on tasting too much to also play videographer haha. I've only had spirits from Roulaison, Atelier Vie, and Porchjam (Cheramie Rum). What other Nola distilleries would you recommend trying?

@@RobynSmithPhD Sugarfield west in Gonzales is doing some really cool stuff, although they're not rum-exclusive. Same deal with Old New Orleans, which is terrific - they had a fire a few years back, hopefully they're back in form soon

@@differentspirits4157 I've been wanting to try Sugarfield's rums! Next time I'm in Nola, I will hunt these down!

Privateer is soooooo over rated and lacks real complexity or depth. Roulison from Louisiana makes better stuff and Seven Caves in San Diego with there funky unaged Overproof. Privateer got hyped by bourbon people and all the real rum connoisseur’s laugh at it. At close out price it’s decent but there our so many other rums I would buy before Privateer. Not really a fan of The Rum Champion. He has been into rum for less than 3 years and acts like he should be listened to. He is just cashing in because there aren’t a ton of rum people online. He should be taken too seriously. He is just trying to cash in on newbie’s into rum that don’t know any better.

I do love Roulaison! I agree Andrew is making some great rum! And I can’t believe I haven’t tried Seven Caves yet… I’ll fix that stat!

Balcones just released a potstill unaged funky rum that is 69%ABV but I think it's Texas only. there are some more U.S. makers making funky rum now but I can't remember the names. bang for the buck the Stolen Overproof half bottles for about $20 is the best deal around for aged Hampden stuff. @@RobynSmithPhD

I haven't tried any of Balcones rums... and I haven't seen anything unaged from them either so maybe the bottles haven't made their way to CA yet. But I've been hesitant to pick up their rum because 1. it's not cheap here (over $60 for a bottle) and 2. whiskeys seem to be their thing and that always makes me a little bit weary. I'm sure I'll eventually grab some of their rum, but it would be cool to try an unaged rum of theirs!

When Maggie was the head distiller, pre 2020 the rums were on a great path, laughing stock, no when your next job in rum is the Manager of the Estate rum program at Mount Gay you and your products were not laughing stocks. Those early rums were interesting and showed her ability.

@@snowrs1 You're not the first person to say that. I wish I had some of their older batches distilled by Maggie to taste! I'm happy for her to get the Estate Rum Manager position at Mount Gay though!
