I had the incredible opportunity to attend, and speak on a lived experience panel, a symposium on metabolic psychiatry in Austin, Texas this week. I learned so much and am feeling so inspired about what feels like the future of psychiatry. In this video, I share my thoughts around this monumental shift that needs to take place in psychiatric care, and reflections from my own experience and sharing publicly on this channel.
Thank you so much Baszucki Group for involving me in this event and for everything you're doing to mobilize and propel this movement forward.
I understand that this intervention may not work for absolutely everyone. But there is no denying from my own experience, the experiences I've heard from others, and emerging research, that this is something really big.

Why is it always falling on other people to be responsible for teaching the basics. Now it's a psychiatrist's job to create your food menus?

Glad to relay that for the first time I've heard some psychiatrists talk about metabolic psychiatry, and reportedly there was a talk about keto for Bipolar disorder at the most recent APA (American psychiatric association) meeting. When we finally had our adult son and brother back in our lives (he'd been on the streets for 8 years) and got a diagnosis (schizoaffective with bipolar) one of the 1st things we did was get him eating more healthy. The more proper medications and regular visits with his care team have helped him into living a more symptom free life. What really seems to aid to so much more quality of life has been going Keto. Because of my profession I was aware of what it could do to help in other health conditions so we decided to try it and its amazing to see the results! Not a cure by any means but my son has a life now! Can look to a future and not just coping to exist. Always work with your care team because eveyone is different. Omg hi! I am from Austin and I'm so glad you went to the symposium! And yes--Austin is a great place to eat with dietary restrictions! I wish I could have gone and shared my lived experience with metabolic psychiatry; I'm so l glad you were able to. It's so strange to experience something that's considered "fringe" or cutting edge and having such positive results. You just want to scream it from the rooftops! I can't express just how thankful I am that you are documenting your progress and raising awareness about how diet can affect mental illness. In 2018, I had an episode of psychosis, depression, and total insomnia that lasted months. I went from neurologist to psychiatrist, bouncing around aimlessly and desperate to find relief. It wasn't until an encephalitis specialist that requested an endoscopy. An endoscopy? I was so confused, but she pressed the importance between diet and mental health. I was so skeptical until I went on a strict anti-inflamatory diet and saw incredible results. I would not have believed it worked; I saw positive effects quickly. I am currently on a modified paleo diet, and it helps so much. I received a bipolar diagnosis and have been taking seroquel 300mg--the marriage of diet and the correct meds has done wonders for me. It has been such a frustrating trial and error to figure out what works for me, but I am in a good place. I completely understand the grief; I wish diet wasn't considered so "woo woo" as I feel like it would have helped me so much to have this information as a kid. I grieve so much time I lost to psychotic and depressive episodes. The following is an article I wrote for Medium in 2019: medium.com/no-end-in-sight/gluten-psychosis-how-my-diet-almost-killed-me-and-put-me-in-a-psych-ward-twice-cb1a633d1bd5

Psychiatry hasn't changed in 2 centuries. The diagnostic categories and the technical jargon have changed, the treatments have a less brutal appearance, but the function of psychiatry as an institution hasn't. The internal contradiction between the desire to help people who are suffering and the social function to suppress problematic behaviors and emotions, that contradiction will keep sitting comfortably at psychiatry's core for as long as it exists.

I've heard people express similar sentiments before, but I take issue with them because they assume this position of psychiatry being a paternalistic institution that surreptitiously tries to geld people into submission to society, or deprive them of their agency or whatever. Psychiatry exists for the same reason as oncology, dermatology, toxicology, etc. exists, people want to cure what ails them, whatever it may be. You can misconstrue any of these fields' goals as being part of an institution that's trying to control you, make you a slave to society, or take control of your body, but people seem to be very sensitive because this particular field treats your mind. It's always good to be cautious when having a medical intervention, but believing that psychiatry has this systemic, nefarious motive to control people is just borderline conspiratorial thinking.
@marcodallolio9746
@marcodallolio9746 4 месяца назад
@@balzdeep69 you've heard it before because it's a position that's almost as old as psychiatry itself, at least a couple of centuries. Anti-psychiatry had it's time in the light in the 60s and 70s, but it's always been around. Your position and mine are not new. However I didnt get there though exposure to anti-psychiatry theory. I've worked in mental health for more than a decade now, and when I started I shared your beliefs (I assume you subscribe to the biomedical model of mental illness), but after experiencing psychiatry from the other side, hearing psychiatrists discuss cases when patients are not around, I've changed my mind, now I share the position that social control, pressure from families and communities to suppress shameful or uncomfortable behaviors, are the most relevant factors in decision-making, and not the well-being and the future of the patient, especially when it comes to forced treatment. Anti-psychiatry might be conspiratorial, but simply looking at psychiatry like it was any other branch of medicine is simplistic. Psychiatry is fundamentally different from other branches of medicine, in many aspects. Its objects of treatment are not biological in nature, and its decision making is much more influenced by societal factors (ie the enforcement of social norms). One could argue that we need non-judicial institutions of behavioral control, and I'd be fine with that argument, I might even agree, and that would be an honest defense of psychiatry. Sometimes people are out of control, but don't commit any crime, so we need other forms of intervention, like sedation through dopamine antagonists. But trying to make it look like other forms of medicine, which historically has always been a major worry of psychiatrist, is disingenuous.

That’s an interesting point about clinicians needing to shift their identities and beliefs. Complicating this is the extent to which coercion and casual dehumanization exist within the medical model. The possibility of new therapies would involve seeing a client as a person holding possibilities of empowerment and recovery as opposed to a lost cause to be controlled. This shift is a stark contrast to the current paternalistic mindset, and may also involve admission of guilt and feelings of shame. Lauren, conferences are inspiring and I’m glad you had this experience. Metabolic Mind still seems a bit echo-chambery to me but I’m willing to entertain their messaging and research as part of the broader project toward mental health reform, which for me would also involve non-biological improvements like cultural competency, trauma competency, and abuse literacy. Hope you had a good flight back to Alberta and wishing you continued progress on your medical keto journey :)

I’m glad medical keto is working so well for you! However, I think it’s overly optimistic to think the majority of the population will be able to commit to this lifestyle over the long term especially in this food environment. Most people fail diets even when it’s good for their health and they feel better and I don’t think we know how to overcome that yet. Medicine has to meet patients where they are at and offer treatments that will help them and they can be successful at. I think it’s for this reason that doctors are hesitant to jump to keto because it’s hard enough to follow for most let alone people who are struggling with their mental health. With that said more research is great and it should be an option I just think a lot of people would struggle with keto especially over the long haul.

I think it's odd to say this is "too much to ask," but then what's the alternative? A lifetime of unemployment, disability, fractured relationships, hospitalization, and a lower life expectancy? @@Mack-i2u You may feel that way, but how many people fail following a ketogenic diet? You need a very motivated patient. @laurakaras5100 I imagine if most people were having hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia (that led to unemployment, etc.) due to certain foods, I doubt we'd have many issues with diet compliance. Most would start to see certain foods as toxic and change their diet. I'm not saying this will be easy for people, but if it does actually work, I think it's a lot more life-changing than an overweight person trying a new diet to lose weight.

The diet industry at large is to blame for a lot of the damage done to the average person's relationship with food. And it has long failed to be successfully combated by the medical system at large because the average doctor doesn't get enough education on nutrition. We need to start adding nutritionists and neurologists to the list of doctor's those who have psychiatric issues see.

Did you know that over 800 million people in the world are starving to death. Food is not a medical cure. Nutrition can be studied by doctors all you want. Is the doctor going to provide food for you all to eat to your nutritionally best? Who can afford to eat like this? This is really a meat-based diet. Beef is a fantastic source of protein and fats, making it a staple in the keto diet. Does anyone know that this diet consists of lot of very expensive food. So who is paying for all this nutrition?

I've been mainly adhering to a Paleo Vegetarian diet since 2001 (I eat eggs). I suppose it qualifies as a type of metabolic therapy. I've found that eating eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds (along with proper supplements) is salubrious and healthy for me. I am usually clear headed, and I can engage in activities that I want to do. I'm fond of organic foods in general. I'm not in ketosis, but my blood tests are mostly normal.

Thank you so much, Lauren, for sharing this leg of the journey--got the Brain Energy book Friday, and just got to Part Two today...nearly four years of Long COVID health crisis as of the end of this month, which has turned into a staggering mental health journey, with both new diagnosis bipolar/schizoaffective potential diagnosed out of the gates..."settled" four years later on "PTSD"...ALL along, I have been saying, "Something has gone fundamentally WRONG with my METABOLISM here...someone NEEDS to GET CURIOUS with me on this fact, PLEASE!!!" FODMAP diet, estrogen replacement have only recently helped me START to finally BEGIN to "turn the page" on this health crisis...hypothyroid seems to be the next thread to follow (if anyone will allow thyroid antibodies test, while TSH still comes up "low normal--PLEASE DO NOT make me wait until thyroid DIES to get support/treatment!)...along with rapid climb in A1c...hospital nutritionists do NOT offer Medical keto...I will continue the search, thanks to your informative help! Many heartfelt thanks, beyond words.❤️

i love seeing you shining so much, and getting to be a part of your passion for science and research and teaching - as in, i remember you talking on videos ages ago about how on one hand it was so sad that you couldn't pursue your career as a researcher or professor (if i remember vaguely right) because of your mental illness but had been able to acknowledge that the way this youtube channel has evolved has allowed you to do something like it, only different. And as i watched This video it felt exciting to know all of this previous info and to witness you getting to take your own passions to the next level whilst also having such an incredible experience of renewed capacity and vitality. It's super inspiring and makes me happy to see you doing this Lauren, yay :) I have an autoimmune/neurological disorder called M.E. and it probably has a Strong metabolic component and i think maybe could benefit from medical keto too, i need to look into that and see if there is any research or are any examples of it working for my condition.

Although I’m not schizophrenic and can’t speak to your precise lived experience, I can speak to the neurodivergent experience more generally and have some respectful feedback. First, you’re absolutely right that the lived experience of patients needs to be valued. One can’t tailor treatments appropriately if they treat those in their care without voice or agency. No one able to speak for themself needs anyone else speaking over them. Regarding identity, again, I can’t speak to your lived experience. As an AuDHDer, I consider being Autistic and ADHD to be integral parts of who I am. I embrace the traits that bring me joy and try my best to manage and accommodate those that bring challenge. Even though I realize that your neurotype must bring substantially more challenge than mine, it still may be liberating to acknowledge that your brain is wired differently than a neurotypical person’s and that doesn’t make you diseased or broken. Look at the term “intervention,” for example. That’s used to describe treatments or therapies (including abusive ones) a lot in the Autistic space, and I reject it, because it’s not only a very pathologizing synonym for treatment, but it also implies that the individual has no autonomy or agency and that those treating them need to “intervene.” Again, I realize our experiences are not a 1:1 comparison. I just think it’s time to jettison the medical model of disability and not see ourselves (or allow others to paint us) as “mentally ill.” We’ll never truly be autonomous or be able to see ourselves with the respect we hope others will if we buy into that.
@Catlily5
@Catlily5 4 месяца назад
I am AuDHD and mentally ill. I don't think that you have the right to tell us what to call ourselves. The brain is a physical organ in the body and can be ill. What if diabetic people said "I am not sick, I just have a bodily difference. I don't need treatment. I can eat all the sugar I want." Mental illness is more like diabetes and less like autism.
@Catlily5
@Catlily5 4 месяца назад
Plus, we can be autonomous and see ourselves with respect even though we are mentally ill. Would you suggest that to someone who was physically ill? It is ridiculous to imply that someone is not worthy of respect if they are sick. That is a very ablist attitude. People are worthy whether they are ill or not.
@GhostIntoTheFog
@GhostIntoTheFog 4 месяца назад
I made it extremely clear I wasn’t making a 1:1 comparison between being AuDHD and being schizophrenic and was just making general observations from a neurodivergent perspective. I also wasn’t implying that someone labeled “mentally ill” should be looked down upon; my point was that pathologizing anyone (including oneself) is generally bad, regardless of one’s neurotype or condition. Your response was extremely combative and vitriolic and there was absolutely no need for such overt hostility. Best of luck in your journey.
@Catlily5
@Catlily5 4 месяца назад
@@GhostIntoTheFog Yes, I got very angry with your comment. I have been diagnosed with mental illnesses since age 14. The mental health community has been working hard to get people to see mental illnesses as physical illnesses because the brain is a physical organ that can have problems just like the rest of the body. You seem to be trying to see mental illness as a difference rather than an illness. This is dangerous and could lead to people not taking medication when they need it. I had some friends die because they stopped taking medication and did dangerous things like end their life, start using drugs and alcohol instead of medications until they died, etc. So after seeing people die, I get angry at your suggestions. There are no medications specifically for autism so what you are saying is not as damaging to the autism community. But it is damaging to the mental health community. The medical model is wrong in that it sees no positives but for mental illness the medical model is right to suggest medications for severe mental illness. I live with severe mental illness. I am speaking to help protect people who are in my community.

Just had a thought about how it all makes sense. We use anticonvulsants as normothymics, keto once was developed as epilepsy treatment regimen - anticonvulsant if we stretch, also I know from veterinary world that liver vein bypass in dogs can cause secondary epilepsy, I have a reason to believe it works for human as well - metabolic and neural connected again, and all around the same area. I know it is a very big stretch, but still - at least it deserves a look and further research.

I started low carb many moons ago and my daughter suffered with Anorexia Nervosa; from my understanding when you go low carb / keto then eventually you mostly lose the craving for carbs (yes sugar meets many medical definitions of what is a drug) the massive reduction / total removal of carb craving impulses is a major factor in helping fellow sufferers cope better... One concept I think is very valuable, is "cut of the crap" food.

I think focusing on the body and emotions is the necessary precursor for mental left brain logical thinking health. Everyone has certain body traumas that in turn connect to emotional dysfunction . I do body healing like TRE tapping etc, look into Iain McGilchrist and Margaret Paul Inner Bonding. You will never fix your thinking with thinking alone. Some of my own schizophrenic delusions have occurred because of childhood trauma and repressing childhood sexual abuse. That is not to say that the left brain experience like the yang to yin is not still real and important, but per Iain McGilchrist the right brain is the master and the left the emissary. People with Schizophrenia are stuck k in the left brain that is where they have always felt more comfortable and where they ran away from trauma (if you are an enneagram 5 you can relate) and so that is where the problems and repression shows up- predominantly in thoughts.

You know, for myself, I’m going to wait till more research comes out before asking my doctor about trying keto. But it makes me reflect a little- I wonder if there’s sexism involved when it comes to the extreme backlash people like you and the fashion creator Liz Seibert have gotten in your keto diets for mental illness (she also did it for GI problems). I understand the importance of skepticism, but it feels like a lot of people, when they hear women say “I feel mentally healthier than I’ve ever been, and have a better relationship with food/my body now,” so many people are quick to discount their experience, tell them they don’t know what is best for their mind and body.

It’s tough because my thinking changes and shifts and I have difficulty with not being able to resolve beliefs in my mind. I’m beginning to question and consider that my BPD is more biological rather than strictly environmental - it’s both, but I tend to just blame everyone around me for my symptoms, when my mind is wired a very neurodivergent and sometimes extremely irritable and uptight way.

Will psychiatry change is a difficult question. I see a psychiatrist and every instance of recommendation of doing things differently seems to be met with hesitation. Fact of the matter is no one has gotten better under psychiatry. Their medications and treatments just don’t work for the majority of people. People are desperate and “hopeless” as Chris Palmer has stated. People have first episode psychosis’s and their last resort is to seek the professional guidance of psychiatry only to find after years and endless amounts of money that they can’t do anything. People have lost their lives, people have lost everything. It’s a rare and “strange” set of symptoms but people deserve better! D2 and 5ht2a drugs do not intersect ata trauma and adress a pressing issue they do not treat complicated problems, they subdue and make people fat and die early. Will psychiatry change? They absolutely MUST change and I don’t think they will. While diet isn’t always the answer for everybody. Increasing mitocondria to treat mental disorders is the answer and so science must back and distribute medicines
@louisehogg8472
@louisehogg8472 4 месяца назад
First episode psychosis is usually a symptom of prolonged stress and exhaustion topped off with chronic loneliness. And after a change of scenery to somewhere safe to relax, and enough sleeping pills to catch up on sleep, should be treated accordingly. That is, with lifestyle changes and addressing trauma. It's rarely a symptom of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
@Lipolimtown
@Lipolimtown 4 месяца назад
@@louisehogg8472 I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s rarely a symptom of schizophrenia. Doesn’t it often transition to schizoaffective or schizophrenia because it just doesn’t get treated correctly or entirely? Heavy marijuana use during stressful times can also cause schizoaffective…along with other co factors. I agree though but all these conditions, bipolar with psychotic features, schizoaffective, schizotypal are all so closely intertwined. Point is also there are NO effective or meaningful treatments whichever way
@louisehogg8472
@louisehogg8472 4 месяца назад
@@Lipolimtown Apparently up to 99% of psychotic episodes will resolve themselves eventually without antipsychotic meds too. According to the psychiatrist I saw, they can be deliberately induced in any healthy person, simply by depriving of sleep completely for 2-3 days. In this country they've almost completely stopped diagnosing fresh cases of schizophrenia. Partly fashion in psychiatry (which tells you a lot about how reliable diagnosis is!) and partly being blamed on previous levels of lead pollution. (Initially lead pipes, then leaded petrol). Partly because they ARE now told to treat a first episode as a standalone brief psychotic episode, medicated with antipsychotics only until six months after breakthrough symptoms resolve. (In reality they still tend to medicate for up to two years, but certainly not permanently). I'm not saying there are no cases, but they've found psychosis is actually a pretty common stress symptom, and often passes unreported. If anything, transition into a permanent diagnosis was happening because the medical profession was over diagnosing, labelling, adding further trauma via medication side effects, coercive treatments, and not supporting patients to reduce their stress level. Drug induced psychosis is increasing, yes. Hash and cocaine I think?
@Lipolimtown
@Lipolimtown 4 месяца назад
@@louisehogg8472 yeah, that’s what I associate Schizotypal with. Schizophrenia symptoms in healthy people. A lot of it is amphetamine anhedonia in my opinion. Reactions to negative bipolar symptoms. It’s good that treatment centers aren’t diagnosing a portion of these conditions! It only makes people more reclusive pensive and hopeless. Cat ownership can also cause schizophrenia. Yes Marijuana, amphetamines, stress, anhedonia, abuse, cyrcadium disruptions are all the things that cause these rare conditions.
