Enough is enough. It's incorrect to identify Puertorricans in the Island as Democrats just because Latin voters in the states identify themselves as Democrats. We are not the same because of our different background.
@@michaellovetere8033@michaellovetere8033 most pro statehood voters id themselves as Republicans, and some as Democrats. Although I would id myself as a Republican, I prefer to not do so because I don't have the chance to vote for my President and Commander in Chief. However, we vote in primaries. I don't think we make a difference so far. The main problem with not giving the statehood to Puerto Rico is that it's based on a discriminatory decision taken when it was widely accepted to discriminate against people based on their race. That has changed, we are supposed to have overcome that. It's nonsense to keep that decision.
Puerto Rico is not a territory..A territory cannot leave the Union . Puerto Rico is a " Possession" I do not trust this article and it's conclusion for this and other over all political behavioral history. Thank you .
@@bradfordparker6639 In 1901, the US Supreme Court ruled on the status of the island territories that came under US administration after the Spanish-American War of 1898. Puerto Rico became an “unincorporated territory”; such statuses was given to territories that were not considered potential states.
I don’t have an issue with Puerto Rico becoming a state. It’s currently a territory and would only need to follow the protocol to become a state. Washington DC on the other hand is another story as it’s designed to be a federal district, not a state. If you’re going to just make the capitol buildings under federal control as some have suggested, then the rest of DC needs to be returned to Maryland where it originated.
My mother was born in Puerto Rico and she married my father who was posted in Puerto Rico during World II and she moved to Kentucky where my father lived. While she was lived she favored the current status. Since then things have changed. There should be a vote now regarding status of Puerto Rico by all Puerto Ricans on the island.
States are always added in twos, to maintain the political balance of the US of A. If PR will join the Union, another state of opposite political leanings must be added alongside it.
Democratic, if it were Republican the national Republican party would not be fighting so hard to prevent their admission to statehood while the Democratic Party is consistently advocating admission.
Puerto Rico would never become a state because that would mean their gravy train of paying no taxes, with free military protection and government hand outs would come to end. They would have to pay for it now...
@@quest2k ~ I'm not talking about individuals. Each state in the US pays different taxes to the federal government, as well as their own state. Those taxes goes to various resources for American citizens. Puerto Rico doesn't pay any taxes to the US for those same benefits that they are receiving...
@@Deborahtunes Puerto Rico's penalty for no federal taxes is that they don't get to vote for president and congress: electoral college and senators are benefits of states that Puerto Rico doesn't currently have. There is a balance in taxation and representation now.
@@boltzmannbrayn ~ Puerto Rico is getting the sweeter deal. They cost the United States billions in government programs and military protection. Personally, I wish they would become their own country...
Puerto Rico is not a state. The argument is only about 50 years old. All you ever hear about is Puerto Rico. How many territorial islands does the US have in the Pacific? No one is out there fighting to make one of them the 51st state.
If you are concerned about American colonialism, maybe they should be seeking independence like other countries and not been another state in colonial America.
Thanks for your comment. The Philippines were a U.S. territory or possession, since for purposes of the U.S. Constitution they are basically synonymous, and the Congress passed legislation to make them independent. Hope that is helpful.
For Puerto Ricans they have the best possible situation, they don’t pay individual federal income taxes which is currently up to 37% of income yet per person they receive the most government assistance back from social security and disability per person. In return they can’t vote for president. I would say most Americans would rather pay no income tax than vote for president. Easy choice. The war of independence was because there was taxation without representation. In Puerto Rico they have No taxation and therefore no representation. A better question should be is do Puerto Ricans want to pay US taxes, vote for president, or 3. Become there own country without US involvement.
But Puerto Ricans do currently pay income taxes, as they pay Commonwealth of Puerto Rico income taxes instead of federal income taxes. And they pay other federal taxes that Americans on the mainland pay as well.
Puerto Rico needs to be granted their independence from the U.S because it is a failed state dependent upon billions a year from the U.S. tax payers. The people of Puerto Rico are into socialism, even though they cannot afford it. I say let them have it and let them go their own way.
Puerto Rico actually sends more money to DC than DC sends to them. It’s the United States 🇺🇸 so basically you’re saying the United States is into socialism then as well right ? Isn’t social security public school systems and public police departments and public housing also socialism? Because all 50 states and U.S. territories have those things.
@@BK_718 Red states represent Capitalism and blue states Socialism. There's no longer a "United" States. And James Parker, I'm with you 100%. Give Puerto Rico independence from the United States, because it will be an absolute disaster for America, and usher in two more permanent Democrat senators, and everybody knows it. That's why the left is pushing statehood for DC also, the ultimate liberal toilet.
@@BK_718 Yes, you are right, we have a lot of bad socialism (bad schools, bad housing, corrupt Social Security). We don't need more with Puerto Rico. What money goes to goes to DC???
Yes!! Puerto Rico would be a swing state. And that is one of the many reasons Puerto Rico will never be a state, it provides no political advantage to either party.
@johnson2191cj Are you Puerto Rican too? If you actually go to Puerto Rico, culturally, it is extremely conservative. But also a lot of people are on welfare so that's more of a thing Democrats support. And the current leading candidate in the polls for governor is a Republican lady named Jennifer Gonzalez, who has also endorsed Trump. So, if it became a state with her in office, it would be a MAGA controlled state. Also it would be the most corrupt state too, because both the two major parties the PNP and PPD which are both Pro-statehood and Pro-status quo, are extremely corrupt. But it's all never going to happen because Puerto Rico is never going to be a state and we never should.
Taking out the politics out of statehood is absurd and not based in history. Majority of states came into the union based on balance of power, 2 per states for north and south before civil war. Hell the last 2 state Hawaii and Alaska were brought in as a pair as well...
Democrat or republican it's a waste of time cause we don't even have a right to vote for the president, so until we have that right and statehood it's all symbolic
I think republicans are missing out on PR being a state bc as a Puerto Rican who lives on the island, I think pr would be a lean republican state w the right candidate!
Hahahahah 😂 colonialism ??? Really??? Conveniently he didn’t mention the BILLIONS of dollars sent by USA 🇺🇸 to that island 🏝️ in return of what???? Get independent so tax payers in USA 🇺🇸 will save all that money
It’s controlled by the US yet does not have the right to vote in national elections, the literal definition of a colony 😂. Also they have to pay taxes as well while not being able to partake in democracy so…
@@Ijhgvbbnjjhbnj~ Puerto Rico only pays taxes inside their own country. However they pay absolutely nothing to the US, despite getting free government hand outs, and American military protection. This needs to stop. One of three things needs to happen. 1) They become a state of the US. 2) Start paying for everything they receive, in the way of taxes. 3) Become an independent country, and do it for themselves. PR had been sucking off the US t*t for far too long...
Puerto Rico sends more money to the United States than the island receives from the United states. Really though I love the island We should be aware that this planet. Isn't our real home. God is alive ,He has a plan for all our lives. He is coming to take His people Home with Him. He loves us so let's get ready.
Neither, Puerto Rico is Democratic! That is the official name of the only pro democracy party left in the United States. The Democrat Party is a name Frank Luntz invented in his focus groups because it did not sound as positive to voters.
Majority of people that vote in Democratic primaries in PR follow the political tradition of the non existent Democratic party of Roosevelt and Kennedy. Many Puertorricans voting in Democratic primaries in the island have no clue of what the Democratic party has become. In moral, ethical issues Puerto Rico is highly conservative. Any day you take a statistically valid poll, and you will see that the vast majority will be against trans, particularly body or hormonal mutilation of kids, the destruction of family as the nuclear core of society, feminism in its present destructive stage of women, pink Marxism in the way of equality of outputs, the peremnial card of racism used as a victimization tool to divide or rationalize the plantation disaster of blacks etc.. Many continental Americans do not understand this and tend to see Puerto Rico using the optics of US Democratic vs Republicans. The old concepts of "left" or "right" is gone in the US and in PR. Best way to understand Puerto Rico (referring to people that live 365 days a yr in the island), is to come and immerse yourself in the island. Otherwise, 99% of the time an outsider will not be able to read the situation.
Puerto Ricans here on the island are neither. Our mindset is eternally set on colors, either blue or red, New Progressive Party or Popular Democratic Party. We do not consider candidates or issues, only caravans and flag-waving, blue or red. Your candidate is the prince of darkness, while our candidate is the messiah who will lead us out of the wilderness. When you try to keyhole us into Republican or Democrat boxes, that's not who we are; leave that for those who moved stateside.
Puerto Ricans, it’s time to oppose the distractions! Politicians, including Jenniffer González, want us to focus on statehood debates, but the real issues-43% poverty, 500,000 people leaving, and an average income of $22,000-are being ignored. Vote for anyone but her, as she’s been part of this conversation for 25 years without addressing the real problems. Let’s demand the release of funds to help the poor and take action against corruption benefiting the hidden elites.
