India is in a bad spot. It has two aggressive neighbors (China and Pakistan) and no American President is going to send troops to defend it. Therefore, they have to have a relationship with the only large player remaining on the world stage (Russia), but it can't be too close.

Russia made a HUGE error bombing that children's cancer hospital during Modi's visit to Moscow because I'm betting he saw how they celebrated this atrocity. I think it opened Modi's eyes to what monsters this regime is, and that allying with people like this would be pure folly. That is when I stopped seeing pro Russian stances in Indian media, or at least a great reduction of it. I have been watching carefully because I thought and continue to think that India is the key to the whole thing in Asia. I think they should mediate in any peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey is beholden to Russia economically so they are out for serious negotiations, whereas Russia relies on India buying their oil and so have no real leverage on them.

India has the potential of becoming the most favored emerging market trading partner of the countries it is not engaging in hostility towards. Contrast that with the apparent past peak development of other Asian countries which seem mired in corruption and repression. The genius of Indian enterprise and work ethic of Indians could bring economic investment if they are free to become entrepreneurs and a strong legal and institutional framework exists to secure the rights of contract. Indian manufacturing doesn't need to be merely a source of cheap labour. To the contrary, a living wage can be made while offering good value to Western customers simply because India has the workforce and talent, while only lacking startup capital. Making a beneficial trading relationship which doesn't inure either to foreign post-colonial exploitation or Indian class system abuse is the main concern of ethical trade.
