Dog was on a commercial raw food for three months and came down with gastrointestinal distress and an eventual $1000 vet bill. Vet said her biggest concern with frozen raw food is in the transportation of the food from manufacture to store and did the raw frozen food ever reach an unsafe temperature and spoil.

This helps a lot I’ve been very on the fence about raw food most because I don’t wanna harm my pet, I just wanna give it the best life I can. And one of your other videos this month could you please go over different brands you recommend for commercial raw feeding? Thank you again for clarifying all of that!

ThePetFoodList is a consumer site that verifies human grade ingredients and human grade supplements and quality control for the raw and cooked fresh pet food companies. Only a few are good enough to make the list. There are several categories and subcategories of commercial raw foods. Die hard raw feeders do not feed HHP treated foods. HighPressurePasteurization uses high water pressure to break the cells in the meat and that includes the cells of bacteria and protozoan contaminants like toxiplasmosis. HPP is the happy in between for customers not willing to take the risk of pathogens. Understand that the main pathogen concern in raw food is for the protection of the human owner. Carnivores can handle carrion so you don't need to worry so much about that especially for companies that use human grade, USDA inspected meat. HPP turns pink, fresh, flavorful, raw meat into beige/gray gamish that some dogs do not favor. Some argue that HPP ruins proteins making them unnatural. For sure, we know that HPP "ruins" the structure of the meat but I am not sure if it alters it at a molecular level such that it affects micro and macro nutrients. I have decided to use only non-HPP but that is made with the very best human grade, inspected meat. PetFoodList approves of RawBistro brand and SmallBatch that are non-HPP. in the HPP category, the list approves of Steve's Real Food For Dogs and several other brands, can't remember. Primal not on the list, Bones&Co not on the list. The list is 10 bucks and well worth it. The categories of fresh cooked and raw commercial can also be subdivided into those that use food ingredients to supply the required nutrients, those that rely on some supplements and those that rely on a lot of vitamin/mineral supplementation. If you choose a supplemented food just make sure it is human grade supplements and not "feed grade supplements". ThePetFoodList investigates and verifies that for each of the brands. I recently tried Farmer's Dog, cooked, fresh frozen food and JustFoodForDogs, fresh, frozen, cooked food. Both are approved by the list. They both supplement (Farmer's Dog is fully supplemented whereas JFFD relies more on including cooked liver and some other things to supply naturally). Both use human grade supplements. My dogs liked the taste but having been on dehydrated raw Stella and Chewy's and dehydrated raw Small Batch which are both low glycemic, had some issues on these two cooked foods because they contain very high carb. My problem in general with the cooked, fresh diets is that they have modeled themselves after kibble in that their macronutrient ratios such that they are very high grain carb. So, I ditched them and cook recipes with high meat, veggies and no grains. You have to research and use good recipes. My dogs prefer some things cooked so I am currently using high quality commercial raw that is expensive and high quality, human grade ingredients to make some cooked recipes as well. Okay, nuff said. Your pet is so lucky that you are on Skylar's channel and interested in learning and doing what is better/best.

Hey I know you are probably busy but I was curious what your thoughts on Vetdiet dog food was. I just got my deceased brothers dog and that’s what she’s been getting and I just want to make sure I’m getting food that’s good for her without destroying my bank account too much. She gets canned food aswell but mostly kibble. I work 3 jobs so I don’t have much time to prepare stuff for her and money is pretty tight so any input for my situation would be extremely helpful. She’s 6years old, half pit Bull half mixed, and she’s 48lbs.

Not that I advocate feeding only chicken breast for months, but I am surprised that you consider it far worse, nutritionally (you said "more dangerous") than the "lowest shelf kibble" (7:03). I find it a little incredible that a real food would be more "detrimental" than a poorly sourced and produced kibble?

I've always fed my dogs raw so not an anti raw person. And will say she's 100% correct and I say similar stuff to people asking me about my dogs & cats raw diet. Feeding just chicken breast (or really any meat like only giving them stakes for example) is far far far worse and more dangerous then the absolute worst kibble. Because they will become malnourished. It's extremely low in vitamins and minerals without these your animal will get a ton of medical issues. At least the worst kibble will still provide these things. This doesn't make chicken breasts etc dangerous or bad themselves. But what makes them dangerous in this case is when it's the single food item/or most significant food item (aka feeding them just chicken breast 5 days a week then 1 day a week giving it some chicken legs and liver doesn't make this ok). Like I feed mine various meats and meats that contain bones as well as organs from chicken, duck, turkey, geese, sheep, goat, cows and pigs. Plus deer when available. I also give them raw fish, cooked oysters (for the zinc mainly) and whole animals like rabbit, pidgin and squirrel's. When I say while I mean like throwing a fully intact rabbit at them. Guts, fur/feathers like everything. My cat also gets the same but also gets whole chicken chicks, rats, mice and quail. (Rats & mice being domestic ones btw) My dogs have always also gotten steamed veggies, potatoes and twice a week some grain like rice for example.

Dont forget campylobacter and toxoplasmosis.There are periodic outbreaks of food borne illness in greyhounds fed raw meat diets.several cats died in uk a few years ago from...of all things .tuberculosis.very hard to treat.also remember formulated to meet aafco requirements is pretty low bar.aafco clinical feeding trials is the gold standard.if you are hell bent on making your pets food please send a sample of your pet food to a veterinary PhD nutritionist for a full nutritional analysis(there is a nutrition dept at the tufts that offers this service) if you are feeding it for more than a few weeks.in studies ..most homemade diets are severely imbalanced.you are not able to assess calcium phosphorus ratios in your home kitchen.you will also need to evaluate urinary ph and monitor for urinary calculus at a bare minimum.i dont think the average layperson has any idea how complicated diet formulation is or how many millions companies such as Hills,Iams,Royal Canin and Purina spend on research and development and feeding trials.you just cant replicate this in a kitchen.i am a dvm and if I have questions I ask a PhD..not a certified pet nutritionist at a petstore.i am not feeding my own pets any food from a company that doesn't have a slew of PhD nutritionists on permanent staff .not just as a consultant...and I need to see they are regularly publishing research papers in the literature..creating new knowledge and innovating new therapeutic diets..for example Hills Biome....10 yrs of research and millions of dollars...this food is a gamechanger.can you replicate that in your kitchen?I cant!and contrary to the nonsense peddled on some channels vets dont get money from these companies.all my own pets are on hills for the last 22 years...and as a vet who does rescue..I have a lot of pets.

Could you do a video on base mixes? Dr. Harvey's and The Honest Kitchen both make base mixes, but there are also others, and it would be helpful to know how different ones rank, the way you do other pet foods. It's assumed that when you add lightly cooked or raw meat to them that they're balanced, but there seems to be a great deal of variation between them. They are supposed to help take the guesswork out of feeding a raw food diet or a lightly cooked diet.

I have a quick question. My cat has feline leukemia and heartworm. and everything I see says to not feed them raw meat because of their immune system. Is there any dry cat food and wet cat food that you could recommend to me to help strengthen their immune system while still being in the $20-$30 range for a 7lb bag and 24 count cans? I trust your judgement and wanted to see if you knew anything about the leukemia. I know I dont have many years with him but I want to atleast try to make him comfortable and prolong it a little bit.

Making your own food. Reminds me of the days I used to feed my late cat Houdini raw. This was around 20 years ago.He had a fatal kidney disease and lived I think 8 years on this. The store versions were very expensive. I got this formula on line--so much heart meat, so much other organ meat, salmon oil, taurine, etc. I'd buy ground meat that had just been ground (early morning) from the meat market. They ground it special for me. I'd mix this and freeze it. Took me half day. He did live a long time with this. But don't mind mentioning it was a hellevu task!! Special cat to me though, as he was an alert cat for epilepsy.

Can you please make a video about Purina pro plan? I just started feeding it to my dog that competes in dog shows. Before i started feeding it I did some research and found out it was an ok food. Thanks for your videos, they are really informative and helpful! I am living in a developing country (Tunisia), and there is only a very limited range of commercially available cat food. There is an Italian import brand of wet food that is not too terrible imo (meat and meat products are listed first on the ingredient list, carb elements are also listed but appear to be contained in relatively low quantities), but I would like to gradually change to a more "personalized" diet. There is absolutely no way for me to get commercial raw pet food in Tunisia, and I don't want to feed raw meat or fish from the butcher/market/grocery because I simply cannot guarantee such factors as a safe, uninterrupted cold chain and general storage conditions. So what I would like to do is to gradually introduce our cats to a diet based on cooked meat from the market, with some vegetables and supplements thrown in. Would you consider that to be a good idea generally speaking, and do you have any recommendations that might help me make the right choices in my particular circumstances? Thanks!

I agree that if owners are not going to do the research and the work a premade commercial raw is the better raw feeding choice. I DIY my dogs raw feeding but I also follow NRC guidelines as well as check and maintain the calcium:phosphorus ,Zinc:copper,zinc:iron, and LA:ALA ratios

Wefeedraw is a great option! We’ve been feeding our Australian shepherd since she was a puppy and she thrives on it! She’s so energetic she can run 4-5 hours a day and so much less energy when she’s only eat dry kibble! However, all the vets I talked to strongly against feeding raw diet even though I said she’s perfectly healthy and we use a company for it rather than homemade diet. We does half and half now and I think it’s the best

love the dog nutrition info, I have a dog and through your vids I chose to feed a high quality kibble supplemented with broth, eggs, meat, bones, pumpkin, etc with every meal. I also have a young neutered male cat (shelter's choice not mine). I really wanna optimize his nutritional intake given that he lacks the so necessary testosterone. I give him high quality kibble with a little snack of very high quality canned food. A big part of keeping him fit and happy is using an automatic feeder that brings consistency into his life (not out of laziness). 1. Is there a raw "kibble like" cat food that wouldn't present a risk being left in the automatic feeder (not temperature controlled)? 2. Is there an automatic feeder on the market that supports raw food diets? Such as being temperature controlled and what ever other requirements there might be that I'm not aware of? 3. Is there a better option for raw food "snack" other than the high quality canned food (Essence Air & Gamefowl)? 4. Is there a magic way to introduce more vitamins minerals and humidity in his diet while still eating dry food from the automatic feeder as a base diet? 5. Far fetched, but: Do you know if veterinarians provide hormonal treatments for neutered pets (cats/dogs, male/female)? Note: I think automatic feeders are very very important and reliable for cat owners, more so than dog owners. Cats behavior is very much influenced by their activity level which is influenced by their meal schedules, so feeding them always at the same time is very beneficial for their happiness. Buying an automatic feeder has made my cat parent life so much better, I am never worried about him, I know he loves the consistency, I never ever worry about being late home or leaving too early in the morning, his schedule is never affected by mine, he is always "set", which reassures me. I don't wanna give up the feeder, I'm looking for ways to maximize it's use and optimize my boy's diet. That being said, the feeder (at least as far as I'm aware) only works with kibble. You leave a considerable amount of food in the main container and you have to make sure it doesn't mold or go bad, that's why I'm under the impression that feeding a raw diet with the automatic feeder is impossible. I guess the overall request is: could you make an in depth video on commercial raw food for cats? Thanks! :D P.S.: call me crazy for being willing to inject testosterone in my cat :))
@pwood6532
@pwood6532 Год назад
Vet here.No reputable vet is going to inject your cat with testosterone.You would NOT want an adult intact Male in your house as they stink and tend to spray.trust me that is not pleasant.if you have an intact Male outside he will find feral females to impregnate leading to the birth of outside litters who usually die from disease..cars..coyotes etc unless rescued.unneutered male cats have an average lifespan of 3 yrs whereas neutered males usually live into their teens.I am not sure where you are getting your info from but it is bizarre and not based on science.if you feed a good quality canned food promoting a urine pH between 6 and 6.5 you shouldn't run into any problems with him blocking.feeding raw meat to cats is absolutely contraindicated as they can get toxoplasmosis.i have treated this condition in a kitten who was eating raw meat...trust me you dont want to deal with this. ...nightmare.do not overfeed...go by WSAVA caloric recs...usu about 25 kcal per lb. Body weight per day for weight maintenance in average adult cat.hope that helps!
