I too am 74 years old (1946) the first year of those considered baby boomers! I started riding a bike when I was 4 years old and have never stopped. When I turned 65, I sadly realized that my ability to ride the distances and mountain roads where I live had diminished to the point that my rides were limited to just a few miles from my house. The 50 mile rides that I had taken when I was a young man were just not possible any longer. I decided to buy a moped, well that was no fun at all. That was the point that I bought the first of 3 E-bikes that I have owned. The technology is advancing so fast that each of my bikes has been a magnitude better than the previous one. I can ride my 750w bike on a greenway trail to a nearby town. The trail includes a 1000 ft. decent and a 1000 ft. ascent on a 22 mile trek. I feel like I'm about 16 years old riding my E-bike, like lance Armstrong minus the drugs. I've put about 4000 miles on my current bike and I would give up my cars before the bike.

My story is similar to yours. I am also a Boomer born in 46 and agree with you 100%. I also have 3 e bikes in the garage. I can no longer run and walking long distances are difficult for me. But on the e-bike, I am young again.

Done and shared. Now sitting at 600 comments. Yes 1000% think e-bikes should have FULL ACCESS to Public Lands. I would also say we need a nation eBike Club. Plus local Bike Clubs with their aging rider membership should help with access.

Good question. I think their concern is speed. If their concern is speed non assist riders have the ability to speed. So it’s the same difference, the same complaint against e riders. so why discriminate against e riders ?

Like you said being subscribed to your channel will get much more comments to the government and hopefully in favor of course of allowing us to ride on these trails. I plan on leaving my opinion on the link. Thanks so much for making it so easy. 51 years old and have had some back surgeries so e bikes make it possible for me to ride with my wife now and we do lots of traveling with our camper.

Thank you so much for posting the link and and giving awareness to people about this matter. I just made my comment in favor of allowing E bikes. I really hope that more E-bikers will do the same thing because it literally only took me a total of 5 minutes to do even if people aren’t going to utilize these parks being able to have the ability to do so definitely should be allowed so the more people that say yes to allow e-bikes they are more than likely willing to approve it in my opinion!!

Thanks for the heads up. I always enjoy your videos but this was the most important. I'm including my comment to the BLM "I fully support allowing e-bikes wherever a standard bicycle can be ridden. I'm 53 and have been riding e-bikes for 3 years now. I've ridden bikes for as long as I can remember. E-bikes have allowed me to continue riding as I've always done without concern for my recent aching knees or lack of breath on hills. The electric assistance in no way changed how I ride other than lack of pain. I don't ride any faster now than I did on standard bicycles in my 20's only faster than I could now (in my 50's) on hills."

We were at Gettysburg NMP last year and E-bikes were a common sight. I think they're the best way to explore a park like Gettysburg, (no bikes at all in the National Cemetery, as it should be) the rest of the park was fine with them. I would only hope they would put special ''bike lanes'' in the town of Gettysburg to get from one section of the park to another. Traffic in the town is horrible!

Long comment submitted....... As a new senior, I am now able to enjoy biking again because of pedal assisted E-bikes. The additional exercise is what the doctor ordered. I'm doing 90% of the work. The motor turns on to assist only when a hill is encountered. You can usually find me on a local bike path pedaling at around 7-8 MPH enjoying the sights as mountain bikers and spandex clad racers blow by me at a high rate of speed. On the trails, I encounter many public misconceptions. They tend to think "motorcycle" and after a quick show and tell they now understand it is just a regular bicycle with help on the hills. I believe that the non supporters here really do not understand the concept and function of an E-bike. Please open the trails to us who have supported these resources through tax dollars our entire lives. Looking at the E-bike demographics, Us seniors are by far the #1 owners of E-bikes.

I have owned bicycles since I was a child. I’m now getting older. My wife also is having a hard time on a normal bicycle. We now both have e-bikes. They enable us to get out and enjoy the out doors again. With pedal assist she and I can again get around, go some distance with aid of the motor. E bikes are a great solution for many people.

Commented. If a regular bike can go there than a ebike should as well. They're not loud or pollute the area in which they're being ridden. At least not anymore than a regular bike. The department of Interior seemed to have a decent enough policy. I would say if you're able to peddle the bike without any assistance then it's a bike and you can use throttle or peddle assist anywhere a regular bike is aloud.

I suppose it depends on what country you are asking about. IN Australia, an E-bike can ride anywhere a bicycle is allowed. Standard Bicycles or E-bikes all the same here. Though legally we do have the 25kph power cut out limit. Under you're own power you can go as fast as you can up to the legal Posted road speed.

For anyone concerned, this was my comment. I am very much in favor for allowing electric bikes (e-bikes) access to all trails and pathways currently open to traditional bicycle's on all public lands. During the spring and fall months of 2019 I volunteered as a Camphost for the Moab Field Office of the BLM. My wife and I were assigned at the Goose Island Campground located along Hwy 128 approx. 2 miles east of its junction with hwy 191. A section of the Moab Canyon Pathway ran through the Goose Island Campground. This paved pathway allowed bike access to not only Moab City, but to Arches National Park from the campground. One of the reasons individuals wished to camp at the Goose Island Campground was the pathway itself. During the 5 months that I volunteered in the campground, I observed thousands of people using the pathway with traditional bikes, and e-bikes. Many of those I witnessed were camping in the campground. As opportunity would allow, I advised people during the spring of 2019 that e-bikes were not allowed on the pathway and those using the pathway could be subject to citation. My discussions often included me pointing out the sign along the pathway that indicated motorized vehicles were not allowed on the pathway. This was generally met with great surprise from the cyclists. I was constantly told they thought the sign was meant to keep motorcycles off the pathway, not e-bikes. This was generally followed up with a question. Where do they expect us to ride? Alongside the highway? To which I could only shrug my shoulders. In the fall after the Policy Memorandum was issued the pathway itself became a source of many discussions. I was advised at first that the pathway could be used by e-bikes, then I was advised it was not to be used by e-bikes and I was again asked to educate individuals in the campground that if they rode their e-bikes they could be subject to a citation. Again I was often met with surprise, and more often or not, individuals telling me they would rather risk getting a citation for riding on the pathway, than risk injury or death riding along hwy 128 and hwy 191. I was asked how many people I knew of that had received a citation for riding the pathway. My answer was always none; as I never became aware of anyone who was issued a citation. At one point I did contact the Moab City Police Department and asked how many people had been issued a citation for riding on the pathway. I was advised I would need to file a GRAMA request to obtain that information. I did not do so. During the 5 months I volunteered as a host at Goose Island I am only aware of 1 cyclist accident that occurred along the pathway. That cyclist was on a traditional bike, not an e-bike. It occurred in the fall. A female cyclist crashed on her bike near the campground on the pathway. She and her riding companion requested assistance from me and I transported the injured cyclist, her riding companion, and both their bikes (in the back of my truck) to the Moab Regional Hospital. She indicated to me she believed she had broken her arm in the accident. I was never advised to the actual extent of her injuries. I believe the use of e-bikes is very much on the rise. I have personally witnessed many individuals using them. Most of those using e-bikes appear older. We as a society are encouraging individuals to get out and be healthier. The use of an e-bike can help older individuals who may not otherwise get out....do so. I would ask, and encourage the policy makers who are making this determination to allow e-bikes on all trails and pathways on public lands (BLM) that are currently open to traditional bicycles. Thanks you for your consideration of my comments.

Another excellent video! I just submitted my comment on the BLM site: "I am 65 years old DIABLED VETERAN, and can now only ride my mountain bicycle (conventionally) on flat terrain due to bad knees and a bad back . The use of an e-bike would allow me the opportunity to enjoy the areas that I can presently NOT ride my mountain bike on (hilly terrain). In my opinion, a "limited or conditional use" of e-bikes is warranted for use on BLM land and trails. I would be in favor of pedal assist only (Class 1 E-bike category) with a power limitation of 750 watts (similar to what the Department of the Interior has set forth for the use in National Parks). This would allow more of the people (like myself) to enjoy OUR lands - thanks to the expanded ability of using e-bikes !"

I feel that this video is one of the most important that you have done with regard to ebikes; we need legal places to ride them! I bought my first ebike at the beginning of this year, 2020, and living here in Michigan, with the cold weather and now Covid-19, havn't gotten a chance to ride it. But, this will all pass in time, and I will be looking for a safe, legal area to ride and explore. I will follow your video and information now and write the BLM. In your discussion of the National Parks limit, you mention that we are OK up to 750 Watts. The text in the memorandum says that "750W or higher" (which is different than "over 750") are motor vehicles. Doesn't that mean that you are only OK up to 749 Watts and could get in trouble riding a 750?

as an E-bike rider in the city of Los Angeles, i'm aware of the many conflicting views on whether E-Bikes belong where cars drive or even where other bikes or pedestrians travel. An E-bike benefits me not only as cheap transportation, but as a Senior, as an exercise, as a convenient shopper, and as a way to conserve your body. i say that E-bikes are for every person of any age who wants autonomous transportation that is clean and affordable. i say that government, society and transportation needs to classify E-Bikes as a faster of way of Pedestrians travelling the streets and trails and thoroughfare. that society and motorized transportation need to adapt their speed and safety down to the same level used for a fast or running Pedestrian on Streets, Sidewalks, Trails or any thoroughfare.

My ebike "becomes" a restricted legal pedal assist bike whenever I come into the vicinity of authorities. I just need to keep my eyes open and hit the brakes.

750 amp limit in fed areas - that was what I was told from my dealer - he got in the business because he wanted to hunt far from his camp area - additionally his bikes would be considered hi bred with both peddle/ Battery- non the less a 750 power level is the limit- anywhere you can go with a mtn. Bike I can go

A Grizzly has TWO 1000w motors, but it has a "2" on the frame. So, what are its limitations? This was tw0 years ago. Have they allowed the e-bikes now?

I'm coming up on my 66th birthday and I ride both a road and mountain bike. I generally ride about 100 miles a week. My wife is a little older and still rides a good bit each week. We see quite a few riders on e-bikes on the local Houston trails. I have no problem with that at all. What bugs me is seeing 20 and 30 year-old riders who just ride without pedaling. What kind of exercise is that? At least use the pedals occasionally to get a little fit. Kids these days want to do everything the easy way, riding electric bikes, scooters, and even tiny cars. Use your muscles, kids! ;-)

I agree that electrically assisted bikes should be allowed in all public lands. I agree that is ok to limit electric-assist above a certain speed. I do not agree that it is ok to limit the power of the bike or whether it has a throttle. People will not buy a second bike just for these lands. By limiting power you are discriminating against people based on their weight and physical ability. Having > 1hp for larger riders is a safety issue both for acceleration in urban traffic, steep hills, or rough terrain. If you require that people buy a lower power bike to have access to public lands you are putting their safety at risk when they use that same bike in urban settings. Similarly, having a throttle is a safety issue, whether its for intersections in urban traffic, getting out of the way of traffic (whether in town or on park roads). A throttle is a critical piece of safety equipment when off-road whether on steep terrain or if your tires get stuck in rocks or having the ability to shift gears. If you are very steep ground or get a tire stuck, you cannot pedal enough to change gears or get the safety assistance you need from a bike that doesn't have a throttle. Here is my riding experience. I'm 55 yr old, sized 4XL, and my e-bike is my primary source of exercise. 100% of the time whether it's on urban roads or offroad, I'm moving < 18 mph, usually 10-13mph. 99% of the time I use less than 150W of power assist. However several times on every ride, I use my throttle to use my max power of 1300W on steep hills or to get off the line when stopped at intersections. I use that amount of power for < 30 seconds at a time, but it is a critical safety feature that I would not do without. If you restrict power and having throttle bike manufacturers will not provide those features on mainstream (affordable) bikes and therefore you are making it difficult for less physically able or larger people to afford a bike and have access to safe exercise and access to nature and public lands. The rules should be written to control the impact (output), not the mechanism. By solely limiting the top speed to 15, 18, or 20 mph, that produces the result you are after. No matter how much power the bike has it will not be engaged above the top speed so, why limit it. Similarly with having the throttle not engage above your top speed limit.

Can you do a video about if ebike are usable without the motor assistance? It seems like this an option added to them so you can actually peddle them but its almost impossible to peddle an electric bike with no power and its only there to get past the limitation it would have with no peddles

Thanks for this, Kyle. I just checked the comments and unfortunately it appears there was a large campaign against the proposal. Many of the comments appeared to have copied and pasted the same bullet points that were probably provided to them. I hope it changes, but we'll see.

If a person's body white is only ABOUT 75 lbs a 750 watts motor is okay but a 750 w motor will not pull any person of ANY REALLY small hills ! But 75 pounds has got to have at least 1500 w Motor to 2500 w Motor or MORE for ANY small hills ! .

I'm all in on opening up more trails. If a regular bike is ok then an ebike aught be ok. What's good for national parks aught to be good for national forests and blm. One country, one rule!

..Ebikes are a great way of getting out and explore, not just the far end of your neighborhood but the other side of town, uptown, down a road where you don't have to find a parking spot and spending an hour on doing so on the other side of town. Many times I have gotten a $50.00 ticket cause I took my car to buy ice cream for my wife cause there is no Ben & Jerry's, Haagen-Dazs, or Baskin-Robbins nearby. Listen, living in the city of New York with one of the greatest parks would greatly be an honor to ride my Ebike. It helps me to challenge myself which my health is no longer 100% after the massive cleaning of WTC. This is the way I choose today to be a part of NY. Not riding the train to find elevators, escalators that aren't operational. I need to go out and exercise where I can find fresh air to be alongside others. Ebike provides me with furthering my distance without pedaling without my COPD getting in my way and I can make it back home. This proposed change would facilitate increased recreational opportunities for all Americans, especially those with physical limitations like myself would encourage the enjoyment of lands and waters managed by the BLM in any area.

All well-n-good --- but what about e-bikes as transportation for ADA Disabled persons? I am a 100% Department of Defense Disabled Vietnam Veteran -- so can I used the trails that are open to regular bikes or not? I NEED the electrical assistance to see what others can see and visit by regular pedaling.

@@0004612 I don't see my native state of CA as semi-communist--not in the least. I've been voting for nearly 40 years, and I have a good understanding of our government. With our systems of checks and balances it is impossible to have a communist state or a socialist President. Your comment is respected notwithstanding.

Bronze - you obviously don’t know about the brutal infringements for buying ammo or guns in your state. Never mind the pages and pages of laws against using plastic straws, gasoline, lead etc. California has more laws on the books than several states COMBINED.

National forests now allow ebikes with local decisions on where and when to allow them or not. I think they will attempt to balance conservation and public use as always. I know from experience bikes make ruts for water to follow and encourage erosion where horses make holes where the water collects. Not all horse trails are suitable for wheeled vehicles they were cut with horses in mind. I am glad they are being allowed and I hope people don't ruin it before I can enjoy it.

I just commented on the BLM adopting the same regulations as the National Parks, that are currently in effect. I did notice there was a lot of push-back from equestrian people, Hey, they had to learn to share the road when cars started to ride on Horse trails. Hope the BLM changes things to the EBike's favor!

Ok without looking at 560+ comments, as I've just subscribed. I own as of today, a brand new class 2 Radrover 6 plus ebike. I know time has passed, and we could use an update on this 2019 great video. Radpower has gone out of their way, to not allow any of the present, and future ebikes to break 20mph. Yet you mention mountain bike designation many times. My ebike is not a mountain bike. It does have fat tires 26 x 4" But are not aggressive enough for that brash treatment on the bike. Can you do an update? That would give us latest regulations. And the latest on how we can still add our support to new legislation. Thanks for your great arterial.
