This is a fantastic review! Very thorough examination of the many pros and few cons with this instrument, along with breaking up the talking with playing snippets of songs perfectly matched with some of the available tones or voices. I was particularly impressed by your ability to use the jazz scat voice to such great effect. I really like this quirky voice, but I have never managed to play it so that the notes resolve at the right time for the rhythm of the song. Now that I’ve heard this I know that it is indeed possible to do, and it sounds amazing, so I’ll keep trying.

I think what you ment to say when you said double escapement is let-off. The let-off is the littel bump you feel before hitting the bottom of the key caused by some sort of mechanism that releases the hammer after hitting the string. On the other hand, double escapement inables the hammer to reset quickly without the key returning to it's full resting position. You are right about the double escapement only being available on grand pianos and, as for the let-off all acoustic pianos whether upright or grand have let-off🎹🎶

Thank you for this review.I bought it to practice as a classical pianist when I am away from home and away from my concert piano. It was unbelivable for me as i tried it for the first time in the store, I knew almost in a moment that this will fit as replacement for a real concert grand with its action.Thoug I tryed many more expensive then this Roland, it gave me near body feeling I have to do with the real piano.

the response of the key is really close to a acoustic piano? Like, im really in doubt about casio 110 and roland fp10 , and besides the sound itself( yes, roland is far way better,) im more concerned about the weight of the key. Because for me is more about improving my tecnic than the sound (i like the casio sound tho) can you tell me your experience as a pianist?

I agree on the missing LCD. But maybe it is just a marketing strategy. But while the Piano Designer app may crash any time, it is not needed at all during a gig. I am surprised that after one year you have not yet discovered the Every Day Piano, which includes hundreds of FP-30X sounds waiting to be played by those who prefer to have an extensive sound library for free. Let everyone be aware that the Everyday Piano app also includes a piano tutorial that may make some piano teachers redundant for some self learning music students. For a snapshot of the configuration and adjustments of a sound patch and whatnot in a set up of a specific song, Yamaha has the features of recording scenes, which are the snapshots I just mentioned. It is always a trade-off game, though. Different key action, sample sounds, for starters Not saying one is better than the other. To me it is a matter of preference, opinion, and needs. Even before buying this board you must have known that Yamaha saves the set ups for a whole gig. set list, and that Piano Everyday gives you more than an LCD and is a robust app. Bluetooth pairing is seamless on the X versions. That page about Bluetooth connectivity issues is there because the manual is the same. Finally, I only comment so as to give the utube audience in general a bit about the facts.

Hello Dear Jeremy ! Still THANK YOU so much for all your activ'on your channel ! After passing so much time on your pages.. so i bought 'my' Roland FP-30X, and now after a little more from 1 Year, i do like a lot ! Next step will be - modestly - interfacing with a Daw Studio. Positiv after all you have explainned : important, i do enjoy for sure the feeling when contact the keys to play them. Upgrade : i think for Roland under your advice should be a little screen like a smartphone for example when pairing with an other interface using BT. Also the 'sound' switch controler to manage the volume should be more 'progressive'. From external, sometimes i can-not pair the BT Piano Partner II so the apps goes flawless. See you ! TjM

@smoker3092
@smoker3092 Год назад
@@zjaeger1800 my understanding is that since a single sensor cannot read that many inputs per second, they put 3 of them, making it possible for you to play fast repetitive notes. Also, it is perfectly normal for you to not get a sound output when you press a key too slowly, thats how real pianos work.

Hi Jeremy, Thank you for a real thoughtful review of this piano. Watching your reviews gave me the inspiration to buy the FP30, the x version was not out yet. I am thinking of going from the fp 30 to the fp 30x because of the additional features it has over the fp 30. It would be nice to have that control. However I use it just to learn piano and it does the task well. Really love the 256 polyphony, but I can get that from using a DAW and external speakers attached to the computer speakers. Issues I have with the fp 30 and same applies to the fp 30x is the stand and the pedals. The pedal are physically associated with the stand and are not free floating. They are on a bar that is screwed to the stand. The workaround was to buy the 3 pedals on the bar then chop off the excess ends of the bar so they look like the ones you can purchase for the fp 60x. Note the fp 60x petals are not compatible with the fp 30x piano. Using MPF board screw that to the bottom of the pedals so they are stable on carpet. There are RU-vid videos on how to do the conversion. The Roland pedals are excellent and it is worth the effort. Maybe I did it backwards I had good quality stand already with wheels, good for portability. Height of the keyboard and the stand were difficult to get the right height. On my non Roland stand I ended up ditching the wheels and using 1 inch blocks under the keyboard to get the right height so my arms are parallel to the floor. The metal z stand I have is strong enough where I can just drag it on the carpet causing no damage without removing the keyboard. I live in a small apartment where space is critical at times. Love the piano, nice solid feeling. Again thanks for the many reviews. Cheers.

Finally had a Roland FP-30x show up at a local music store about 3 weeks ago and got to try it out. The textured keys are so nice, what a great feel. The Key action is really nice too, not as heavy as my old Yamaha with GHE action. I thought the audio could have been a little better. I understand the FP-60x has a better speaker layout. I'm trying to decide between the FP-30x and the FP-60x. I need additional sounds (patches, tones, voices, etc.) for recording. If I go for a FP-30X, I will get a Yamaha PSR to make up for the additional sounds. Thanks for the follow up review, and for the accessory gear recommendations. Good Stuff!
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 2 года назад
@Frank_in_NY Did you decide? The FP-30X is good (I've tested) but I'd opt for the FP-60X, even though it is a lot heavier to carry. Hmmm, GHE action! Did you have a P80? I did and do, but I play a P-255 now, with a GH action. I can't decide which action I prefer, but they are both quicker than the GHS, still found on Yamaha DPs up to €1k. GHS is a bit sad IMO. The P-255 sounds are mainly much better than on the P80, and so far, I prefer them to the P-515 sounds too. The FP-60X should outshine my P-255.
@Frank-in-NY
@Frank-in-NY 2 года назад
@@Zoco101 Hi Mike...You nailed it! I do have a Yamaha P80. I agree with you on the FP-60X over the FP-30X. I'm disappointed that the FP-60X is so much heavier, but it offers so much more. In my mind decided on it. The reason I haven't purchased one is supply chain issues. There are none around to be had. In the interim I've been revamping some of my guitar gear. I've sold some nice gear I had, and purchased a Boss Katana 50 MKII Amp (Sounds great plugging in a Keyboard too!). I waited 4 months to get a PRS Zach Myer SE Guitar, just received it 02/09/22. Who knows, while I wait for Roland to start delivering, something new may come from Yamaha. You have a excellent board with the P-255, make great music my friend.

And wanna give feedback also after some days. I'm super happy with it. I'm very beginner in piano usually also spending more time on the drums. So far I had a Ardour on Linux with fluidsynth and a professional Bechstein and Boesendoerfer soundfonts and Novation Impulse 61 which is not really bad generally but... well, I always thought it's me when missing some tones. The Roland does not only fit perfect to my TD-50 😀- there are worlds between it and my solution so far. The sound of course beats the soundfonts by far and also the haptic of this Roland outclasses Novation - as much as I appreciate the zoning functions. For me as a learner I think it's important to have a realistic behaviour of the equipment and not getting lost of one tone when I play three. So thanks again for the hint and keep on making music!

I bought my Roland FP-30X a few months ago, and I love it. 90% of the time I just use it for the default piano sound, so I don't need to bother with selecting sounds all the time. When I need something more I just bring my double keyboard stand and my Korg Triton Le keyboard for organ, brass etc. Also, I love the grand piano feel of the keys when I press them. I agree that a screen would have made a huge difference, but I can manage without it. Also would have liked a better volume control. I use the Piano Every Day app, and it has never crashed. Only problem is that my phone needs a good cell service to be able to contact Roland's servers, otherwise my piano won't connect to the phone. But when I have good internet, the app seems to be flawless.

The vast amount of incredible sounds, other features, top tier keys and action, built in speakers, and slim, compact format. I ordered a new FP10 in the UK in January 2024, which is still "in transit from Roland" in April. A fact which is killing my local music store. I have since purchased an early and much abused FP30 used. Despite it's tough history and battle scars, it still sounds amazing. It has all the irritations you mentioned and needs a re-grease of the pivots but the build quality inside is fantastic. The metronome is limited, even with the app, which is also limited and very "millennial". in the interface. Contacting Roland is a non-starter- no phone number or email is currently available; not even a useless chatbot. but I would still buy another.

I've no idea why the Roland App is so buggy as well as the Bluetooth connection. There really is no excuse why they don't develop the app perfectly, it may have lost them many sales, such a shame for such a great piano. Roland, please sort it out, it is to everyone's benefit.

Great video again, Jeremy. This is an awesome digital piano, as is their whole series. It's great that Roland puts both headphone jack sizes on this digital piano, and in the front. Like I commented previously, that should be a given, headphone jack in the front for most keyboards, maybe except for the small compact keyboards, like the Yamaha PSS-A50. But my Go:Keys is decent, but I still have to get the Casio CT-S1, maybe the CT-S400 later. But when my playing proficiency gets to a sufficient level, I will just get the Roland RD 88. It's much more affordable than the RD 2000, and has built in speakers, the Zen Core sound engine from the flagship workstation, and a much slimmer compact format similar to the Casio digital pianos.

I kind of lost interest in Roland when the FP-10 immediately sold out, and they didn't replace it when they brought out the 'X' series. In a way, I can understand them doing that since the FP-10 was probably taking a big bite out of the FP-30's market since it offered most of the same features at a significantly lower price. Still, it was a bargain that got away from most of us.

Hello! I just discovered your channel and I like the content you make and am just starting out to learn how to play a keyboard instrument and had some questions I'd appreciate some help with, please. I'm interested in buying either a keyboard or MIDI controller that I can connect to my laptop and play music with but I'm completely new to this and I was wondering if I could get some advice or suggestions on which to buy? I'm looking for something under 300$ and just want it to connect to my computer. -Can most modern digital keyboard instrument connect to a computer? That's my main question. As long as the instrument plays well enough, I'm happy. But I'm mainly concerned about it connecting to my computer so I can play it and record what I make with it. Sorry for such a broad question but I don't know where else to ask. Thank you!

Look at the owners manual. Somewhere in there you will see a setting that is called "local control". The default setting is on, switch it to off and the keyboard will make no noise and only play the iPad voice.....

Roland is really a secret player getting amazing stuff to the market when Yamaha and Casio competition is the hot topic
@jjacob25101
@jjacob25101 2 года назад
Roland has been my longtime favorite and preferred keyboard brand, but it comes at a cost for the the best. Of course Yamaha, Korg, Nord, etc., have awesome flagship keyboards, but Roland has cutting edge technology, and they has so much products out there, not just keyboards, and have been around for a long time, like their famous solid as a tank Boss guitar effects pedals. But, Yamaha and Casio now has great stuff for lower prices.
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 2 года назад
@@jjacob25101 each brand and range has its advantages. IMO, Roland supplies great actions at each pricepoint. Its sounds may seem less "realistic" (than those of some other brands) at least to absolutists, but they work brilliantly on stage. I would seriously consider getting a Roland RD whatever if I did more gigs requiring a bone fide stage piano. Meanwhile, the FP-30/60/90X range may be outclassing Yamaha's P series. Yamaha needs some fresh models to catch up.
@jjacob25101
@jjacob25101 2 года назад
@@Zoco101 Agreed. Roland 's FP series is very goid, especially the FP-90/90X, but one thing Yamaha and Casio does is offer great things for a lower price fir the masses. Sound is subjective, and so is key action and such for those trained and accustomed to that kevel, but lots of others, it's whatever works for them. I can imagine even though I haven't gone the route otvthise traditional classic pianists, if I have decent keyboards, I would be kinda pucky on what I have to play elsewhere, but sone make do. And then there's people like Yohan Kim that has the traditional training to play top tier concert grands, and everything else. He plays a Jawai grand, but plays lots of the Roland keys because hevis their ambassador for Korea, but he plays a Moog and other inatruments, too, at an unbelievable level of excellence, but he plays the Roland Go:Keys and the 37 mini key JD-Xi just as well as the pro level instruments. And Masataka Kono makes the $100 Yamaha PSS-A50, Reface CP with 37 Mini Keys, Casio CT-S1 and Yamaha PSR-E373 just as well. Like I said before, at this present time, we are the winners, because we have such a diverse choice of instruments with different features at different price leveks, and people that help us discern what is best for us. Some of us play just for enjoyment, and not as a vocation or side job, or on church worship teams, and such. But the bottom line is, music was made originally to praise God and uplift our spirits and a form if self expression, and it if positively benefits you, that's what most important, at whatever level you play, from a child, to elder playing simpke tunes from old school lesson and music books, to prolific extraordinary superstars, these keyboards is just a tool to convey them. Professionalsije Masataka Kono can make that cheap PSS-A50 siund great, even without top tier sounds and mastery of all the different features.
@Zoco101
@Zoco101 2 года назад
@@jjacob25101 Masters performing on cheap instruments? At first it can work. The worst thing about playing a cheap/poor instrument isn't how you sound to others, it's how you sound to yourself. After a while it can demoralise you (assuming you have the skill to require a better instrument) and then your performance suffers. How soon others realise this depends on many factors. I'm still very happy with my Yamaha P-255. I think it is/was the best of the P series, but sadly it is no longer made. Maybe I don't need or deserve anything better, but I have to acknowlege Roland getting the advantage on portable pianos.
@jjacob25101
@jjacob25101 2 года назад
@@Zoco101 I'm talking about these super musicians that have a whole audio arsenal, some that maybe ate sponsored, provided for their use, etc. But yeah, Yohan Kin makes many videos with different keyboards, some with not that cheap of an instrumunt like the Roland JD-Xi, but has no problem playing the light action 37 mini keys as prolific as a full weighted top tier grand piano. I'm fine with semi weighted synth keys, but would like a Roland RD 88, if I had room or ready for it. I would probably put it at our church.

I'm having a sort of "midlife crisis" now getting close to 50 and as I've never learned to play an instrument properly despite being very fond of different music genres, now is the time to put this on my bucket list of things to do before it's too late. Learning to play guitar is the secondary choice (I'm saving this for 2023), while learning to play the piano is the first choice. I saw the Roland FP30X used in a piano tutorial on RU-vid not long ago and I actually purchased one just a week ago without checking the competition 😄. It could have been a beginner mistake right off the bat, but the more I'm learning from the different reviews I feel confident I could have done a lot, lot worse. Thanks for the thorough introduction; I'm hoping to be using the app a lot when the setup is all done, so I'm a bit worried about the reported issues of a buggy and slow user interface. However, I see the Roland Piano App was updated on October 27th this year *with* bug fixes, so I'm hoping they have addressed all of your concerns.

Thanks for your great reviews! My main problem with current Roland and Yamaha models is the case depth. I recently upgraded from my old FP3 to the FP 30x and found because it’s 6 inches deep it’s too high to play on my stand. If I lower the stand then it hits my knees. I am an average height person. Does anyone else have this problem? The standard piano height from floor to top of white keys should be around 28 inches(according to sources). So I have to now get either get the Casio PX S3100 with limited key action because it’s only 4 inches deep or keep the FP 30x which is too high too play.

@riscv4372 Год назад
I don't know what type of stand you're using, but if you were using the X stand that crosses on the middle that could be a problem, and other stands like the z stand or the furniture stand for the piano could solve the problem. Also use an appropriate chair for playing, neither too high or too low. If these don't help I would just adapt by stretching my legs out instead of sacrificing for worse piano actions

I had the same problem with my z stand. I ended up removing the wheels and adding an inch of wood between the Roland and the stand to get the right height for me. Ugly but it works and is stable.

Only on the fp30x i was able to play softer while on the kawai it seemed all just as loud. Could not seem to play soft. Is that something i can change in the kawai or is the expressiveness of the fp30x just that much better? It is a shame because i really really preferred the pianosounds of the kawai a lot
