Are you considering a ski or snowboard trip to Rusutsu, Japan? It is definitely a unique winter resort. Here is a list of quirks and perks that may help you decide.
QUIRKS:
1) Rusutsu Resort Hotel is a crazy experience. A carousel, video games, mechanical dogs, antique cars... it is like no other ski or snowboard destination hotel.
2) Amusement Park. There is one on the slopes!
3) Layout. Rusutsu has an intriguing layout. The resort is spread out between Mount Isola and the East Mountain, which are right next to each other, and the West Mountain, which is quite a distance away. In fact, you need to take a chairlift or gondola across flat land to get between the two areas.
PERKS:
1) Beginner and Intermediate Slopes. Rusutsu has a large number of beginner and intermediate slopes. They are groomed, wide, and long. Perfect for those who like to cruise.
2) Partnership with Steamboat, Colorado. Rusutsu and Steamboat have a partnership that allows pass holders of either resort to ski or snowboard at the other resort for free for a few days each season.
3) Age Demographics. Rusutsu seems to have a large number of older skiers. It was great to see how active they were and how much fun they were having.
4) Expert Slopes. Rusutsu has some great tree runs, but they are best when the snow is fresh!
If you are headed to Niseko for a full week, it may make sense to go to Rustusu for part of the time for a completely different scene.

The Zoo (Rusutsu) as we know it is a purpose built ski resort which means the Gondolas run up valleys and are protected from the wind. If you are in Niseko and its blown out, jump on a bus and get yourself to The Zoo. On a powder day it is arguably better than Niseko and definitely better on a Niseko windy day. Pretty good introduction video. Well done. I normally don't spend more than two days at The Zoo per season but that's because I always have a Season Pass at Niseko United.

Quirky it really is. Fun though, and great skiing. Not as crowded as Niseko. The night skiing is good. This is a great introduction to Rusutsu. Thank you.

Thanks! Yes, if I were to return to Niseko, I'd definitely go back to Rusutsu too for a few days because it's great skiing and a very memorable resort due to the layout and quirks.

I have been skiing at Rusutsu for years, and have experienced some AMAZING powder. This video doesn't speak for me, I love Rusutsu and come back year after year as many do.

Yes, I'd definitely visit Rusutsu again - unfortunately, Japan didn't have its typical powder when we were there, so we didn't have the experience one would expect.

Tech question: how did you shoot the skiing selfies, such as at around 7:15? Action cam with stick removed in post? They look good.
@SkiBoyNY.
@SkiBoyNY. 2 года назад
Thanks! For 7:15 and the two skiing shots after that, I'm using a 360 camera (Insta360 One X) attached to one end of the Insta360 invisible selfie stick, the other end of which is screwed into my left ski pole just below the handle. The invisible selfie stick sits within a blind spot on the camera, so you can't see the selfie stick in the shot. The great thing is that you don't need to do any removal in post. The challenge is to ski with a selfie stick projecting out from your ski pole, particularly in the trees like in these shots! You're already dealing with an imbalanced ski pole that wants to swing in front of you all the time, but also making sure that the 4-foot selfie stick doesn't strike any trees! I'm planning to post a video in a few months showing this filming set up and a couple others.

@@SkiBoyNY. Would love to see that! The selfie stick screwed on to the ski pole makes sense, this is what makes it feel more natural than seeing you trying to hold the ski pole and the stick in one hand. Nice trick.

So nice, but overall the ski resort is quite small or?
@SkiBoyNY.
@SkiBoyNY. Год назад
Yes, definitely smaller than Niseko, and intermediates and experts can explore the entire mountain in a day.

yea, but if you're coming from afar and managed to come to rusutsu, take 1 more hour and just got to niseko. much better rental access, more lodging options, and most importantly, a better mountain
@SkiBoyNY.
@SkiBoyNY. Год назад
Totally agree. Niseko is a larger mountain, bigger town with more accommodations, and the ultimate destination. If you're going to Niseko for 2 weeks, though. That's when it may make sense to go out to Rusutsu for some variety.

Last week of February. It was less snow than they normally have at that time.

@@SkiBoyNY. oh nice! We are going mid January for 2 weeks! Super excited! Was it freezing?
@SkiBoyNY.
@SkiBoyNY. Год назад
@@Mixedbydavey It actually wasn't too bad. Sunny most of the time and no colder than Colorado or Utah. Should be a lot of fun!

It looks a little too easy. Why is this place so famous? Where should I go if I want to look for challenging runs with the famous japanese powder?
@SkiBoyNY.

I've only been to Niseko and Rusutsu in Japan. I didn't see the steep terrain or chutes there that you can find in Europe or some parts of the U.S. There certainly were some steeps with trees at Niseko, but it may be that overall, Niseko is more about the powder than anything else. Between the Niseko and Rusutusu, you might find parts of Niseko more challenging.
