I'm glad you kept your composure with the waitress. She needs to learn customer service. Her attitude determines your tip. No matter how bad of a day she's having, she should give the best customer service. Coming from a former waitress.
Noticed that fly too! I've eaten at Sarge's a number of years ago. Was very good. It's the only deli in NY that was open 24hrs. If you want the juiciest sandwich, order medium or medium fat. Ask for knife sliced.
Yeah, the fly crawling over the meat right before you took a bite is seriously gross. Did you eat him? Ugh. Between the attitude and the fly on the meat, I'll pass on this place.
You are a great, honest reviewer and as retired restaurateur from San Francisco now living in Kona Hawaii I want you to know that I watch them for hours sometimes while sitting at the Oceanside ! But Your attitude while dealing with the rude waitress was exceptional and proves your character a thousand times over. People like you are as special as they come!
The things you do for us UA, thank you! I personally would not deal with a second of that attitude/rudeness that was given to you. I would have got up and left, there’s no way I’m giving anyone like that my money or supporting an establishment like that until the situation gets rectified. The fact that you were mocked is absolutely unacceptable and you can believe I’ll never spend a dollar here. The fact that there’s flies/gnats in the establishment and on your sandwich just goes to show what kind of dump this place is.
Lol as if they care if you left. These places are packed tourist traps, they don't rely on customers coming back. They want you in and out asap, they cba with you setting up cameras etc.
They lost me just based on the waitresses attitude and I absolutely love a good corned beef or pastrami sandwich! Be careful how you treat people regardless of what social status you think you have, you never know who or what can bring you down!
@@ramencurry6672people that dislike the South tend to lay this complaint on it... that it's "fake kindness". But how do you know it's fake unless the same person turns around and is then rude to you? Seems their biases are at work when making that comment.
@@JP-jn2yx Having lived in the Midwest, the West Coast, the East Coast and now the South, one thing I will say is that there is a noticeable difference when you drive. Yes, people drive really fast in the South, have big trucks, and you always get someone who swerves around everyone drive way too fast. However, the thing I noticed is that when I turn the turn signal to change lanes, even in heavy traffic, I have had more people open the lane for me in the South than any other region I have lived. People will also be patient to not honk their horn at every situation (such as if someone has a delay when turning left). The West Coast was the worst experience for me in that when I turned on my turn signal, people in that lane, even if they are far behind will quickly speed up to prevent you from getting in. People often say that the real persona comes out when they drive and if so, the South so far have given me the best experience.
I’m instantly not a fan because of the way they treated you. The taste could make my tongue fall off and I still wouldn’t eat there. Glad you remained so positive.
I agree. If the service is crap, then I’ll take my business elsewhere. Customer service is key in my book when eating at restaurants. UA was being respectful through all of it, so I applaud him. I most likely would not have stayed after that interaction, then gave my money to a restaurant that actually deserves it.
People complaing about the waitress need to understand thats the traditional NYC attitude! New yorkers are supposed to be assholes. Also these pastrami places are all tourist traps, overpriced, they are all packed and don't work on repeat customers. They want you in and out ASAP, faster they serve you the more people they can get through the door. They aint got time for you being picky about lighting or setting your camera up.
sorry you had to go through that experience UA! you didn't deserve any of that mistreatment. You asked politely and the woman overreacted. Sorry about that but thank you for making this video for your fans!!! Love from Vancouver!!!
In her defense he’s a guy that doesn’t command any respect. He has a 50-50 chance of a random guy dumping a beer over his head or farting in his face while he’s eating. He would probably say. “ aww man”
I agree with your point. But I would go in and smile at the employees and have them frown at me. It would be kind of fun and remind me of 7th grade teachers
As a fellow Torontonian, I agree. Btw, you should try Sumilicious here if you haven’t had it yet. It’s a Montreal smoked meat place very similar to Shwartz’s.
😂 that's the same waitress we had 😂😂😂 her manager took her to the side cause she wouldn't even take our order and all we did was get seated and never got any acknowledgement that we were even there till the manager asked us if anyone has attended to us. Food was A+++++++
It's bound to happen, I also had similar experiences. Restaurant employees tend to not like cameras, but the owners of the restaurants do. I recommend making media inquiries beforehand, so that if a waiter says they don't want to be filmed you can say that you made arrangment with management/owners. Great video as always. I agree, that Sarge's is no where as good as Katz's.
Great video! Im mad they were rude and making fun of you. Glad you are actually very brave to do this type of filming like that... not just anyone can do that!!!! So keep on rocking man! Your content is the best!!!!!!!!
Another great Deli review UA 👏 Here’s a tip; my late father made his own pickles. You can always tell by colour which the half-sours are. Half-sours are the lighter, brighter green, dill pickles are the darker, khaki colour. Keep up the great work UA!!!
Color depends on which time of ripeness you pick the cucumbers. Even totally ripe pickles can be yellow if they were hiding under leaves in the field. I own a pickle company. I know !
Hi UA: We have a very similar palate. I love my Pastrami, Pizza & Steaks! Sarges Pastrami was good, but I agree with you that Katz is still number 1 in NYC in my book. I also had service issues at Sarges. Waitresses were not that friendly and they brought out my Pastrami sandwich missing the top section of the Rye bread! Their Mushroom Barley soup is pretty good. When I eat Pastrami, I will always order a Dr. Browns Black Cherry or Root Beer Soda if available to compliment the Pastrami. Really enjoy your honest reviews!
Absolutely love your content. My wife and I copy the "I'm UA" intro everytime, keep doing what you're doing because you are the absolute best. All the best from the UK 🇬🇧 😊
There was a period when I went to Sarge's semi-regularly, I'm thinking roughly 8-10 years ago. IMO the pastrami is better than Katz any day of the week, but found the service really unfriendly. I didn't mind so much at the time, but I'm really put off by how they treated you. I respect how you stayed positive and charitable about it.
Thanks UA, I slept in, missed the live stream, haha. The service seemed horrible, you definitely kept your composure. I think I even spotted a little fly cruising around on your sandwich 12:39
@@islandrepublic9166 80%? Maybe back in the eighties. Not anymore. Most of the restaurants are run by foreigners or yuppies who don't have the nasty attitude anymore. I went all over and most places are friendly. Once in a while, you'll find a dump full of losers with the NYC attitude they think is cool. They're all posers who think they are so cool but no one likes them. I had relatives from there, some who lost everything and had to leave and ask us for money after acting like they were better than us for years.
That's a valid point. We actually don't go out to eat very often as over the years we have learned to make a lot of meals that are better than going out.@@ramencurry6672
i also am a katz man, i went to mill basin deli in marine park brooklyn, that pastrami also good but really thinly sliced. i also prefer my pastrami thick cut as well and i think that is why to me Katz is the favorite of my pastrami places. i enjoy your reviews and i look forward to the next one.
Been to Sarge's many times. The pickles/coleslaw are the best part. I seem to remember the customer service wasn't overly friendly either but you handled the situation well. I much prefer the matzah ball soup at second avenue deli and russ and daughters. Good review.
@@NoahEatsMost definitely - there is way more meat included (the sandwich is VERY large) and the meat is overall more juicy and tender and the outer layer has a delicious crust. It's also far more expensive though.
I used to work in the area near Sarge's on the night shift and 5 nights a week after work I'd go and eat at Sarge's Deli. I'd say between 1979 and 1983 that I've eaten at Sarge's Deli a thousand times. To me the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches at Sarges are as good as or sometimes better than Katz's Deli. Katz's Corned Beef if not flavorful enough, and even pale in flavor and dry too. The Pastrami at Katz's is fantastic but sometimes too greasy. To me for the best Deli in NY City I always go to Sarge's Deli and they deliver too. The thing about Sarge's Matzo Ball soup is they expect you to salt and pepper to your taste at the table. You can request for thick sliced Pastrami at Sarge's and I always ask at Sarge's for the sandwich NOT to be lean and to leave all the fat witch is where the flavor is!!! Not kidding. I really enjoy your videos and just saw you for the first time tonight.
I think the waitresses work specific tables and work on primarily tips. I can understand her frustration but she could have handled it better by at the very least explaining the reasoning instead of showing an attitude. Yes, the cop looks like Joe Pesci in Home Alone. The one thing I really dislike about Katz is you have to hunt for an empty seat. Looks like Sarge's you do not have that issue. Thank you for listening to your viewers and trying this place out. Much appreciated your honest review.
Most of the people who work in the service industry are too dumb to hint at wanting tips. I didn't even know barbers accepted tips until years after I moved to America. They don't have tip jars, don't hint, but they'll make nasty comments. They're not the brightest.
So did he end up eating the fly, it sure looks like it? Also thanks for showing the prices so that people know they are only saving a few bucks by not going to Katz although I would pay those few bucks more for the better service. Whenever anyone mentions the Katz prices people comment on those prices like if there is some subway under $10 dollar pastrami option with the same amount of meat available in NYC.
@@mikeymutual5489 But the bussers and counter folks are all nice and treat you with respect. You can get great service at a counter service restaurant.
Nice video mate. I've often wondered what the big deal about Matso ball soup is. It seems like boiled water with a chicken stock cube and a ball of dough made from flour and water. I am missing anything?
Jews are among the worst cooks on the planet. Not many people like their cuisine. Matzo ball soup is disgusting, bland almost tasteless. Looks like something my children whip up when they’re playing house. I’ll take an Avgolemono soup (Greek lemon chicken) soup any day of the week
I'm worried...at the 12:40 mark a fly is clearly seen pacing up and down the meat on UA's sandwich and immediately the camera cuts to said sandwich hitting UA's mouth. I don't know why he swallowed a fly...perhaps he'll die?
You have great energy and positivie vibes! For me, personally, that server sounds like she hates tips and I would have left when met with her attitude. If that's how people are in NYC, I'll stay in Canada where we have manners.
I remember sitting in a Dunkin Donuts near Bay Ridge Brooklyn several years ago. Some random older lady told me about her favorite drink as a kid. The way she described it, I'm sure she was referring to an egg cream. I guess some people really do have fond childhood memories of it
I ate at Sarge's a few months ago and definitely prefer it to Katz's. These comparisons are subjective so there is really no "best". For example Katz's hand sliced pastrami is too thick for my taste and I really like the double fried potatoes at Sarge's. My suggestion is try both if you have the time and can afford the salt and calories.
I remember when I went NY in 2010, and in Little Italy at some restaurant, they would not seat me at all, all the servers ignored me, they all made eye contact and continued to help others, after 30 minutes...I left! Never experienced that here in west coast ever in my life, but I did in NY!
I've heard similar stories of difficult service in Italy. There's even people who visited there who said the restaurants were so ridiculous, they just went to McDonald's the rest of the trip.
Sarge's has the #1 pastrami in NYC. Super thin and fatty. Delicious. Also the best banana cream pie - WAYYY better than Magnolia's banana pudding. Also, I think they were trying to segregate you with the seating. Lots of Jewish delis do that. I'm sure if they knew this video was going to get 100,000+ views they'd be nicer, but that's what they get for having an attitude - lots of bad impressions and lost business. Saying things like "OMG" for just a polite, simple request is unacceptable. Especially in this economy where restaurants are struggling for business. It's not hard at all to be nice, yet they insist on being rude. Once your channel really blows up, they will regret it.
Do they brine their own pastrami and corned beef? Or is it just packaged stuff that is reheated? Also, hand carving makes a difference. Without hand slicing, you may as well eat at Subway. At least recently. What did Subway do before the slicers?
@@stevec5465 Any serious deli is not just opening a package. Many non-kosher delis buy their product from Sy Ginsberg. He will customize it for them and it can be raw or pre-cooked.
"Sarge's was founded in 1964 by a local cop named Abe Katz, who didn't call the deli Katz's for reasons I don't need to tell you. An almost too-perfect picture of Abe in uniform graces the cover of the huge menu." Source: Lost New York City blog
most places have waiters that cover certain sections. it's more convenient for waiters to group people together, makes servicing easier. but that girl's attitude was unwarranted, especially since you weren't being combative and just asking questions. order takeout next time, cuz that's just bad service
Hey I love all your reviews , all the places that you reviewed so far that I’ve had myself I agree with your commentary, also you should come review uncle Giuseppe’s in shrewsbury nj it’s fantastic your really gonna have a blast there , also between the waitress and the fly n bland soup kudos for not totally bashing sarges
Not happy about the staff at all. No excuse to be so ill-mannered. Too many good deli's to go to where that doesn't happen. Thanks for posting, again. Also, saw the fly as well...if anyone's keeping track.
Exactly... even if it's "work" to be nice... than "work" at it. I was a super nice waiter & it was just me knowing it is my best chance at a good or decent tip. It's as important as your speed & listening ability
If the table she didn't want you to sit at is the one I think it is, that's because it hadn't been cleaned yet. Even if it was, she could have explained that and been a WHOLE lot nicer to you. There is also the possibility that by seating you at a messy table she would have faced the wrath of the servers...Just a guess.
It should be a good experience to eat at an establishement, for employees to ruin your day like that, even if they apologize it ruin the whole experience. No doubt that lady will apologize, but things like that shows how mediocre the place is to begin with.
Thanks for doing this visit UA. I should say the usual egg cream at many Jewish delis is the chocolate one, especially if they use U-Bet Syrup; try it sometime unless you are allergic to chocolate. Keep up the good work.
Two items I don't think I would spend $$ on egg cream or matzo ball soup, but that pastrami... yeah worth the $$ for me.(maybe not that many $$ but that is why I don't live on a coast)
Whenever I’m in LA I always visit LA I try to visit Langers and order the number 13 . No other Deli makes a rye bread like Langers especially the outer crust and the Pastrami is tops . As far as Katz’s I’ve been going there for over 50 years as well as Russ & Daughters ETC . Katz’s used to be super consistent however the last time I went into NY was born and bred there but spend most of my time in Fort Lauderdale now really miss good deli there really isn’t any down here or decent bagels . Back to Katz’s was going to get a super appetizing Sunday Morning breakfast with my favorite nephew and even though if I don’t want to wait on line they all know me but that Sunday morning the lines at Russ & Daughters were insane and I didn’t want to cut the lines even legitimately because the crowds would have beat us to death before getting to the door . So I said to my nephew it’s 10:00 practically let’s go to Katz’s which was as usual that early super quiet we ordered Pastrami Sandwiches , Cole Slaw , Hot Dogs the usual stuff we order . It was the first time I was seriously disappointed the Pastrami was dried out like to me I’m not eating Katz’s pastrami unless it melts in my mouth let’s just put it this way it was very disappointing asked for to go boxes packed everything up left gave the leftovers to a homeless man out front and I don’t have to tell you it wasn’t cheap . We went back to Russ & Daughters waited online outside a little till we were by the door and Miriam saw me and winked with a finger bent to come over to her gave her our order and an order to take home for later everything was super delicious as usual . I can’t blame Katz’s I think it’s a mistake to go there that early in the morning especially on a weekend they were probably getting rid of the day before oversteamed then resteamed pastrami or whatever Katz’s is best when it’s super busy already and running smoothly like from 1:00PM during the week when there’s tons of regulars and tourists and the meats are just right . Little fact actually big fact owner of Pastrami Queen in Manhattan years before worked for the famous Pastrami King on Queens BLVD near Union Turnpike that’s were he learned how to pickle and brine and smoke the Navels and Plates best cuts of the animal for pastrami Brisket is best for Corned Beef . But my top 2 are Langers & Katz’s .
There is a group of people who think to be true “locals” they have to put down “touristy” spots and endorse less well known places. I’m glad you’re staying true to the food itself and not engaging in this obnoxious posturing. The same thing happens in Philly with cheesesteaks. Pat’s is king, but locals are embarrassed to say it’s good.
I like the journey for the best pastrami! Next time you come to LA, try Johnny’s Pastrami. It’s different in that it’s thin sliced on a french roll, but I think it’s a contender. Also The Hat is good, same kind of thin sliced.
Thanks for the rec! Always on the lookout for a great pastrami sandwich. For me Langer's is the one to beat based on flavor alone. Katz's is my favorite for quality and quantity.
I'm a life long resident of LA...The Hat and Johnny's are poor examples of a a true great pastrami sandwich..they both are subpar and overrated , especially The Hat.. which is equal to and no better than an Arry's or Jim's Burger style burger joint. Langers is the gold standard here, everything else is just meh
At 12:40 when a fly walks across the face of your pastrami sandwich and you still eat it without blinking an eye, says that sandwich MUST be amazing. ;)
You seriously asked to move to a different spot? And then wonder about her attitude? Servers have stations. And we gotta pay bills. Don't condescend the person who serves you because you want to move to a different spot to eat the same food -- as a one top at that. You clearly have never waited tables or you'd get why she's irritated. Also... if you know delis (or more importantly Jewish cuisine), you know by color which one the half sour is. Also, you absolutely missed out not getting the fries.... and not for nothing but chocolate is the only right way to do an egg cream. Sarge's is phenomenal. Amazing pastrami and best rye bread in the city. Old school NYC deli with local cred. And the attitude is part of that credibility. You want corporate sterility, there's a Shake Shack just up the block. Guarantee you wouldn't stand in line for a table there though.
Love your Chanel fresh and down to earth . Got into NYC at 2:00AM and was hungry went to Sarges which by the way I believe was purchased by the dale family same people that bought Katz’s it was filthy and the Pastrami was inedible nasty place will never ever go back there way overpriced crap .
Good video, overall the price food relation is too much however. I would however come to this for the delicious and foamy Egg Cream and the locals design including gallery of players, the other dishes here can be eaten waaaay better abroad including in my state. See you hopefully one day, including for eating my favorite Pastrami!
There's a bug on your sandwich at 12:41. Ugh! But very good review as usual. By the way, bad service? Mocking gestures towards you? That should tell the viewer a lot. Food aside, hameful. Still waiting for a review of Joe Junior's.
@@NoahEats Yeah, terrible waiter service. Not sure if it's a New York thing, or just that establishment. I might have walked out after a few choice words.
Now this is my spot! I LOVE Sarges. The atmosphere, the food, the sometimes sassy waitresses (who are all actually very nice). I recommend the pastrami kinishes in addition to the sandwiches, deeeeeeelish!!! Yum!!
The thing with me is I always remember when I get outstanding service and I always remember when I get bad service and it effects if I go back or not it seems to me that lady needs to give up waitress thing and try something less customer forward type of job.
Check out Ziggy Gruber, who co-owns a large deli in Houston and is also the grandson of the original owner of the Rialto Deli. Maybe UA can go there on his next trip to Texas. I have not been there but I really enjoyed the documentary called The Deli Man which features Ziggy.
Sarges is my favorite Deli hands down , my office orders it at least once per week. Deli's are known for tough service, I've seen many a tourist get upset over it. The first time I went to Shopsin's, Kenny screamed at me for something. Don't let it jar you UA, it comes with the territory.
I must have eaten at Shopsins 200 times. Kenny (and Eve) were legendary. It’s unreal how easy it is to upset people. NY in the 80s and 90s was so much more real.
My first visit to Shopsins, back when it was in the West Village, Kenny screamed at me that they were closed, even though they were packed, the next time I went, Eve was there and invited me right in, after that I was a Regular and eventually Kenny and I became friends. I go to their Essex location every once in a while to see the Kids. @@tictocbang7443
I feel bad for you UA. You endure such attitude just to review a restaurant purely to satisfy viewer demand! Amazing as wait staff make more on tips than wages! Btw- there is no way I d pay $25 American for meat n bread!
I watched a video by another You Tuber who went to Sarge’s and he got two matzo balls in his soup. This waitress short changed you, not surprisingly, based on her attitude.
I love your reviews. When you said the matzoh ball soup needs some seasoning and mentioned dill weed, I knew that you are a sharp guy about the stuff you review. That is my wifes special ingredient that makes the soup taste good. Not all places uses dill weed. That soup was oto plain. Should have fresh carrot and celery for additional flavor. Good matzoh ball soup is not loaded with salt. If you get a bowl very yellow with alot of salt its bad. I enjoy all your videos and you are polite and fair, even though they gave you a bit of hard time.
Good question. I think a lot of it is beef is more expensive than it used to be. But smoked meat in Montreal is not as expensive as pastrami and corned beef is in NYC
NY deli is very broad. Corner Deli’s like bodegas will not typically charge crazy prices although it varies however Jewish Delicatessens DO charge more. The sandwiches are bigger but up to the individual if they think it’s worth it

@ramencurry6672 sorry not sure if I understand the girlfriend part. I can understand if the waitress was in a bad mood. However, that is not an excuse to talk to a customer like that. All it takes is one negative experience to ensure that customer never return. Now in my multi decade career working both the front lines of my chosen career and up through junior and senior management, I have had a few bad days, particularly early on. I understand, but she would need to learn and improve from that.
Been to Sarge’s probably over a dozen times. I’m sure I’ve had that waitress before. Sometimes they’re a bit rough around the edges. One has been waitressing there for like 40 years. I have never had an overtly rude experience, but ymmv and yeah, I do get the sense they treat regulars/locals (like me at the time, since some of the employees recognized me) differently/better.
