Fun fact for those who don’t know. To note Mark’s comment about the movie’s rushed ending, the comic wasn’t finished when the movie was made. So Edgar Wright and writer Michael Bacall created that ending presumably off Bryan Lee O’Malley’s notes. But O’Malley liked their ending so much that he basically reinterpreted it as the comic’s ending. So in a way, the ending of the comic couldn’t exist without the movie ending

it's very Fullmetal Alchemist in a funny type of way. The original anime caught up to the end of the manga, manga wasn't finished but the anime needed an ending so the anime team did their own thing with the author's approval and everyone celebrates. Fast forward a few years and then FMA:Brotherhood gets released which is closer to the manga and has the manga ending. Everyone celebrates yet again. Love it when this happens. Basically double dipping a good time.

Mark I feel like you might have missed the parts where it's mentioned that they were only separated 12 to 13 years AFTER the honeymoon so when old Scott kidnapped Scott it had only been around a year or two into the separation. Only after he became even older Scott did it become more than 10 years and it had only devolved to this point because old Ramona asked for space and when Scott knowing Ramona's tendencies thought they were permanently over. It's also revealed that all she wanted was for him to reach out again which implies that in that time she very much could have just tried to get back in contact with him but she didn't because as even older Ramona was telling Ramona that she should let go of it meaning to run away she too ran away from the responsibility of communication necessary in all good relationships and doubly necessary when she knows Scott's a bit of an idiot who also isn't good at communication.

This difference in gap is important. If it's movie timeline, like Mark said, Nega Scott wasn't absorbed (or even fought?) He's just shitbag Scott. But yeah, they were only apart for like a year or so and Scott went away, cause Ramona is a runner. The 10 years was after OG Scott left

@grifgaming436
@grifgaming436 6 месяцев назад
20:28 I disagree with this. The show made a point to show that both Scott and Ramona were at fault. Both fell back into old habits. Scott thought they were divorced, while Ramona says they were on a break. Neither of the seem to have communicated on what their relationship was, Scott fell back on his immaturity, and Romona ran away like she did with her exs. Future Romona could’ve stopped this just by talking w/Scott, but instead she tried fixing the problem in a round-a-bout way by giving young Neil a script about Scott’s life.
@IfritBoi

Facts, lack of communication and running was pretty much what Scott and Ramona were all about before and after their relationship in pretty much all the adaptations. Being straight-forward ends a lot of problems if not solves it all together even IRL. How did Mark completely miss all of that?

I like Scott being the one that gets sent to the future. I really like the scene where Scott meets future Romona and tells her that he’s been watching everything that was going on in the past while he was gone. How there’s a different Romona that’s not running away from her past due to her care for Scott. It shows future Romona that she can change and to stop running away from her past, which she inevitably does when she saves them from future Scott by confronting him after 10 years. I also really like how all of the robots mannerisms were a lot like Scott, and that’s because it was actually Scott all along. Makes for a for a fun rewatch, it’s like Scott isn’t there but he is you know.

Also knives was in her battle outfit in the final scene because everyone was in their game costumes with their game weapons (everyone pulled them out of ramonas bag) My main problem with the show is the fact that Scott is meant to have a bad memory of the past because of the glow and only think of himself in a good light, but kim retells the past as scott remembers it. I like the idea that this older future version of Scott is the one specifically from the movie and not from the book and he fell out with Ramona because the whole story and what it meant for both of them went by too fast. Like, Scott has WAY WAY WAY more character moments and reconciliation in the book and the book took place over the course of over a year instead of the movie where it took place over a few weeks. Maybe the reason this other timeline happened was because it was literally doomed by the format of the narrative where they had to fit so much in that it wasn’t given enough time to sink in properly.

So some background info, taken from an interview with the creators of the show: The reason for changing things up the way they did was because Brian Lee O’Malley didn’t know where else to go with the series. This idea is what pulled him out of a creative block. Understandable, since so many of the most memorable characters were killed in the original. And he said he didn’t want to just retell the same story yet again. The reason the show was advertised the way it was is simply because they considered “90% of the show to be spoilers” Also, when Edgar Wright emailed all the actors asking if they’d reprise their roles, they all accepted within mere hours. It was basically an automatic yes from everyone, which makes me think they must’ve had an absolute blast making the movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead didn’t even know about the change to the plot until she was practically in the recording studio, months after accepting the role.

As someone who watched Takes Off as a complete newbie to Scott Pilgrim, then went back to the comics and movie, I love the show. While I definitely do understand the disappointment of not having a straight adaptation (especially when it comes to characters and plot points like Scott’s exes that don’t have proper on-screen representation), I like the approach they took because it felt like each iteration was building on the same set of characters, even if events transpired differently. There’s a real sense of progression in seeing the same characters make more mature decisions under different circumstances. Ramona especially being forced to confront her own emotional business from a lover leaving, and her exes learning to move on in a world without anyone to take revenge on is fantastic. Also the anime style definitely fits better with the energy of the series overall. Cooler fights, cuter designs, and able to inject the serious moments into fun scenes without feeling cheesy.

As a longtime fan of Scott Pilgrim(both books and movie), I suspected this reaction would be what most new viewers had. The show works as the second half of a Kishōtenketsu(four part) storytelling structure, by using a "revealing" twist. Doing it in a new series, long after the fact, is a real surprise, and when the twist appears, even in one-season anime, it often marks a polarizing moment in fan discussion, so of course it would be the same here. Making it a second loop telling adds more layers to the lore, and also corrects some ways in which the story could previously be misunderstood, especially the movie telling, as "Scott beats up some guys and gets the girl". And this correction will always piss off some fans. There's an article in web magazine Strange Horizons describing the phenomenon of "Kirk Drift" - which is precisely this kind of misunderstanding. In the article, it's Star Trek's Captain Kirk being normalized into a "brash womanizer" archetype, instead of a wise, deliberate tactician. In the case of Scott Pilgrim, the show's new context makes it primarily Ramona's story, while denying the possibility that Scott has somehow been "purified" by beating the ex's, by making his older self an antagonist. It's slightly more tragic as an ending because it asserts that the relationship is likely to never have a "happily ever after", but it's also very mature in conveying a journey-not-the-destination sense of what romance and friendship can be.

personally i think when they fuse ramona has the realization that it was partially her fault she avoided the problems in the future and needed to fix it just as much as her past self needed a reminder not to bail expecting scott to wise up at some point, and that to do that she may need past scott to have future scotts realization that that is a problem and if he wants to avoid being like future scott that, he'll need to both wise up and reach out. its just a framework thing that doesnt really make it obvious cause ya got the obvious man child big boss guy calmed down by ex machina future ramona acting comparatively calmer but you still sit there and think, wait he was in a garage for 10 years after the first time she had to time travel? Didn't talk to him or nothing till the fight went down?

You nailed it. It didn’t even come off as subtle to me either, the entire show is building up to Ramona’s realization of her own flaws and it finally dawns on her after fusing with a future version of herself who never grew past these flaws. I’m surprised Mark misinterpreted this.

I always liked that scott and ramona were both like kinda terrible people. it was interesting and in a way they sorta deserve eachother, Scott and Ramona both used the people around them, we get 6 whole books of scott mostly doing this and it's heavily implied and even directly stated how badly ramona treated some of her exes. I was really REALLY excited to finally see the series as an anime then heard all the shenanigans about it being different and now i'm just kinda bummed. Even if the series does look pretty good i have to accept that the series i was hyping up in my mind the last few months doesn't exist so i might watch it eventually.

I think the show indirectly caused Scott to seem like a much better person by making his ex's not really important to anything. if its from the complete dismissal of Envy and honestly removing any depth she had in the first place to Kim's backstory with Scott being rewritten in a way which makes Scott never guilty of anything and also just the actual understanding of why Knives and Scott even became a thing and how bad of a mindset he had at the time to even go through with it.

Yeah, the show was inconsistent about Scott himself, and IMO, Todd and Envy too. They feel like completely different characters despite this being a "What If...?" where they retain their personalities and their pasts are the same. Completely weird that they retconned/ignored Scott's fight to save Kim, for example (The idea Gideon had implanted in him)

I think you’re missing that Ramona’s dealing with her evil exes on her own, sort of helps show that Ramona didn’t go through the growth she needed to in the “original timeline.” Like, she didn’t really have the conversation she needed to learn that she needs to stop running from her relationship when they get difficult. It seems like a lapse in communication, Ramona wasn’t really willing to explain what the problem was so she left Scott, which lead to Scott growing bitter and evil. But just because Scott wasn’t the soul person at fault, doesn’t mean he didn’t contribute to the breakup. I feel like the show is kinda realistic about. Whenever I’ve broken up or taken a break from a partner, it hasn’t always been “their fault.” Now that I think of it, that’s kinda Scott’s Achilles heel. Whenever he breaks up with someone he immediately blames all his problems on them instead of reflecting, or he just forgets and assumes it all went fine. Hope that helps! Edit: also I do think it’s fair to ask, even if this was Scott from the original timeline, would it be unfair that he struggles with being better? I don’t think so. Again, I think that’s kinda the reality creeping it. Problems don’t begin and end with you acknowledging them, you have to actually take steps to improve yourself. In all endings of Scott pilgrim, I’ve never been entirely convinced that he would be able to do that smoothly.

Do we? Do we treat the future Ramona as in the right? She admits to running away, merges with current timeline Ramona and turns to Scott, ADMITS FAULT and asks for his help to improve as a human being. Is this 'perfect being portrayed as being right'? If anything the series clearly shows Ramona did something wrong, and then future Scott Pilgrim couldn't handle it and did bad things about it. It is portrayed as more nuanced as a one sided beef.

I think the best way to view this show is a compliment to the series, its own thing. It highlights certains characters like the exes and Ramona, and shows us more about their life than other media did, and “what-if” Arcs that totally could’ve been plausible after Scott beats them. I would love a mashed-up tl with these two but I know the lore would go all over the place, so i rather treat it as a side thing to show us more depth.

Man you made a LOT of good points with this video- I don’t know if you’ve seen it already, but Johnny2Cellos made a video on the anime and makes a lot of fun points that kind of lean where I am about the anime. but seeing your video gave a bit more perspective- One flaw to me is how reliant the anime seems to be on you already being aware of the SP franchise prior, but at the same time, it wants you to acknowledge the series as it’s own thing- it’s a bit antithetical, when you think about it- A lot of Ramona’s shitty behavior is revealed to Scott in his defeat of all the exes, so getting the opportunity to flip that on its head is a great idea in concept, but does leave me wanting more given the execution; to really see and test Ramona if the relationship is worth investing in- Something that’s consistent with Ramona is that she’s constantly running away- she’s always in control of how the relationship ends, even the movie brings this up- but here? She had no control over this, the relationship ended abruptly- So I find her motivation, that “what could have been” thought process? To be really engaging, and in a way kind of align with how Ramona would act (at least, that’s how she comes off to me) I agree with your point with being at a middle ground, because if a season 2 ever happens (really hoping it does) it allows us to actually see the beginning of that relationship, with Scott being the only one left behind character wise- and even though that future Scott was defeated, it’s not like their timeline was suddenly erased from existence- I’m not sure what logic it runs under, but I’d like to see that Scott, despite facing his inner demons, is still capable of becoming that person- that just because you become aware of your flaws, doesn’t mean they go away- it’s that “awareness” of them that shows a testament to one’s character- that growing takes 100% effort Defeating the exes gave him a chance to be with Ramona, but with the way things are now, it’s more a question of if Scott is willing to stay with Ramona, despite the rough patches. As always, really good video, I really enjoyed it, I think I rambled for a bit longer than desired 😅 Note: I find it funny that everyone’s lives significantly improved the second that Scott left-

I like how they've handled the adaptions. Most of the time the adaptation can never meet the original, that's why people always tell you to read the source material because it's just superior than the adaptation. So I think them using this as a way to tell another story with the same characters and world is very enjoyable. We got the graphic novels, the movie, the game, and now this Netflix adaptation. You can experience so much Scott Pilgrim without them all retreading the same material. I think if anyone wanted the original source material adapated 1:1, they should just read the graphic novels because that'll never happen. When people try to adapt 1:1, they end terribly.

Considering the cost of this production and the talent involved, it's safe to say we're NEVER getting a proper animated adaptation of Scott Pilgrim and that bums me out big time. It's a lot harder to convince someone to read a book over watching a series, and so i was hoping for a version of the story that had the depth of the books instead of the shallowness of the film. I definitely enjoy things about the series but i finished it simply wanting more development that reflected the characters according to the novels, instead of these borderline flanderized versions of the characters. I cant imagine having this opportunity for a proper adaptation of the books and not doing it.

I tend to be on the Internet more than him and was actually the one to find out about the anime adaptation and tell HIM about it. He was skeptical at first since he never read the comics but after the show released, we sat down to watch all 8 episodes and we were instantly hooked. I thought everything about it was so great although he had some criticisms about the voice acting and sound effects not being the exact same as the live action movie. He did say a few times "this wasn't in the movie" at which point I had to remind him several times that this is its own thing and we were lucky the original actors came back at all. In the end we loved it and he actually said he was happy that Ramona is more likable. I don't necessarily have an issue with the idea of an alternate take on the story focusing more on Ramona. The comics and the anime are my favorites in the franchise because you get to see all the different sides to the characters, including the leads and all of their exes. The movie failed to give the characters more than just a few traits and changed the theme of self-improvement to "Oh, I just have to believe I'm as cool as I actually like I am". That and they cut out basically the second half of the story. The second half is so important because it shows all of the events that caused Scott's relationships to fail and why he needed to improve to even start a new relationship. It also gave Ramona some development as well as she realizes she needs to stop running away from things. Scott and Ramona's character arcs are to be less toxic and to stop running away and over time those two arcs overlap. Scott realizes that he was horrible to the people around him and didn't put in any effort into his relationships. He then realizes that he can't run away from change and can't run away from Ramona because he loves her so much. Ramona realizes that she kept on getting into relationships not meant to last and that every time she abandoned her partners instead of talking things out. She realizes that she needs to be transparent with Scott and to try and make things work as they both improve as she loves him back just as much. The anime has its own take, but without The Glow or Nega-Scott interfering, Scott and Ramona can't face their pasts. Instead, it takes Ramona trying to find Scott for her to acknowledge her own flaws and to make sure her future self stops running away. Meanwhile, Scott is given a look into his own future that he doesn't deserve and decides that he wants it anyways and will try to make things work even if there might be a rough patch or two.

I hate the justification people give for the show when others don’t like it. That the creators wanted to do something differently and the comics and movie already exists so it’s fine to do something differently. Except what’s so wrong about finally wanting to see the series animated and moving with the original story. The animation, design, and soundtrack were all great and while the new story isn’t bad it doesn’t make it any less of a bait and switch, with marketing making it seem like an adaptation of the comics, and the creators just saying it’s different before doesn’t even begin to describe how different it is. Not everyone is going to enjoy a twist as large as this, I’ve been patiently waiting to finally see the story in an animated format only to get something completely different. It’s disappointing and irritating. Also Ramona looking for Scott makes no sense. She’s still at the point in her life where she’s running away from her problems, and just because her and Scott has “sparks” still doesn’t justify her being so dedicated to finding him. She hasn’t had the character development to look for him instead of running away again. Again it’s not bad, but people are acting like it’s this perfect recreation when it’s just good. It’s not some piece of media that will change the industry forever. It’s just a solid good series that has its faults and some of the most irritating marketing.

As someone who only has seen te movie, I really liked the animation, but really as some sort of continuation of the movie. My bf hasn't seen the movie was a bit lost with some characters, because they assume you know them. I think the best experience is to watch it together. Because I really enjoyed the further exploration of the exes and other side characters who I felt like were a bit one-dimensional in the movie, aside from funny quips. (lines in your trailer?). Of course this causes some other characters to suffer screentime and development like Envy and Stacey. Ramona is someone I purely liked for aesthetics in the movie but fell in love with her in the show. For me it felt like Ramona was the bad guy in this story, oppossing what you're saying. It was clear to be that she just runs away from stuff and doesn't consider people's feelings. She doesn't care about her exes or Knives' "heartbreak". Old Ramona doesn't realize her own flaws because she never confronted herself on it, and then she was. The movie explores Scott's flaws and the show Ramona's. TBH I wanted the Scott's to also merge so both Scott and Ramona have a shared knowledge from both timelines and now would be the most mentally grown versions of themselves. Perhaps we even get a S2, seeing the ending!

I think it's nice to see an animation of beloved series with a plot that isn't a lazy copy and paste. We already have the comics, movie, and game that go over the main plot. I hope people do try to give it a chance despite the differences but at the end of the day it's you either like it or don't like it and that's fine.

People like spinoffs, especially when they add something new. This completely changed what everyone thought about Scott Pilgrim while still keeping it's charm. I think that Johnny 2 cellos had the best take on it that everyone who actually enjoys Scott Pilgrim will love it and those who hate it are just scared of change.

Personally I think just because they wanted to develop the characters more, doesn't negate the fact that the characters didn't really change

Its controversial marketing aside, I found the anime to be a mixed bag. The art, animation, and music are great, but the story and characters were mid at best. Like I can understand what they were trying to go for, and there were some fun moments, but the execution felt very lackluster.

Scott Pilgrim cartoon what doesn't have Scott Pilgrim as the main character, what can go wrong? Modern Hollywood in a nutshell.

This time it had nothing to do with Hollywood. It was the author's decision. A decision that many people dislike.

I completely agree with your interpretation of the ending. It's the same problem I have with the new Adventure Time Fionna and Cake's way of handling the main relationship. They say on the surface that the problem stems from both sides of the relationship but somehow they are always hell bent on making one of them be absolved of all wrongdoing. I wouldn't have a problem if both sides were equally in the wrong and had to reconcile in some way.

I personally never watched the movie or read the comics, but it wasn't until this show came along that I decided to watch. So far, I haven't been let down and I'm glad you made a video on it Mark. P.S. ur friend SplashDash must've loved the Sonic reference

Honestly despite how long the wait has been the new anime does a fantastic job of adapting the comic and combining the best aspects of the movie. It’s a brilliant and faithful adaptation of the series and stands on its own. A huge relief.

Hey for 21:07 That was exactly my take from the evil Scott storyline Old Scott constantly goes on about how he was a good husband and old Ramona actually agrees when talking to young Scott she even says he was the love of my life I took the ending as Ramona choosing to learn to live with her past and future mistakes and realising that running from her Exs is what made them who they are and if she kept it up she would end up hurting scott

I feel the lack of Scott is something they’ll fix in a Season 2. Something I think could happen given how the show’s been trending on social media.

They pull the Masters of the Universe. They should have be honest from the start on what the show is really about. Ramona is cool, but why not name the show after her instead of pull a "Bait and Switch".
