Is SGC the leader in Vintage Baseball Cards?

I read a really great article this morning about whether SGC is leading in the market share of Vintage Baseball Cards versus PSA. This article was written by hobby enthusiast and expert, Matt Felumlee. He is the administrator of a number of Facebook Vintage Groups as well as founder of CardhoundVintage.com.
I wouldn't call it a landslide, but it's interesting to note that cards from the 1950s and earlier that were sent in for the month of June to both PSA and SGC shows that there were more sent in to the latter.
I can't say what the numbers look like in prior months, but I'd imagine that the numbers would look consistent on a month by month basis. That is for another video! However, if that is the case and those numbers hold true month to month, I'd imagine that Collectors may have taken notice of this prior to the acquisition. What do y'all think?

I love the Gemrate blog...great info. The numbers and visuals are theirs (and cited as such), but the analysis is mine : )

Hi Sammy, great information. I had 14 cards graded with SGC in June/July timeframe. All of the cards were from the 1960's and 1970's. I submitted them at the Chantilly show and received them back in 10 days. I cannot say enough good things about SGC. I am working on getting 20 cards ready to drop off to SGC at the National.

My answer was “YES” before watching this. I’m glad the stats agree with me. 😁 Thanks for doing this, Sammy.

Thanks for sharing some great information Sammy. I am an SGC guy, like their service and the way vintage looks in their slabs!

I prefer SGC for my vintage cards. I hope they don’t change because Collectors Universe bought them.

I personally love the SGC slabs so much more and the turnaround time was dramatically faster than PSA with my recent grading experience. I'd expect their vintage grading share to continue to grow

I knew Topps, Bowman, Play Ball, Goudey, Red Man, T206, Caramels and more- but had never heard of “PSA” or “SGC” brand cards! 🤪😉

From my time on RU-vid. PSA and SGC have been the two most commonly used grading companies for vintage baseball, which is why I think it was so disappointing or upsetting to many people in the community a few months ago when, the news broke out that SGC was being bought by Collectors Universe. Hopefully, they won't follow suit of PSA, and acquire their same custom service, longer wait times, and upcharges along with higher grading submission fees.

I’d hope not.

Interesting stuff Sammy. I a not completely surprised by this, but it is very interesting how the data was broke out. I believe SGc may gain more market share of the 60’s and 70’s as time goes on.

It's hard to say that SGC is the clear leader in vintage, as it's advantage seems rather small. That said, SGC leading here makes sense as the value differential between PSA and SGC vintage slabs is fairly small, and probably small enough so that people looking to resell can choose SGC over PSA for the lower prices and faster turnaround of SGC.

I think that’s one of the advantages. Much shorter wait time

I'm still new honestly to having grading influence my hobby. I just came back a little over a year ago. It's very hard for me to see a monopoly that doesn't do a exceptional job not causing problems. I buy a few mid number graded cards, but the vast majority of my collection my eye dictates the variables.

Great info, Sammy -- thanks for sharing. I have no idea how many cards auction houses (Heritage, REA, etc.) submit each month for grading on behalf of consignees, but my first thought about 1950s and earlier is that maybe they recommend and use SGC more, and perhaps that contributes to SGC edging out PSA in that category. Just a guess there.

Thank you for a good video. "We don't grade vintage cards because it is too difficult" says PSA(Please Submit Again). As collectors get older and wiser they realize SGC is the best. Also, the PSA graded card values have decreased so far that PSA 9 cards sell for less than raw cards... LMFAO!!!! PSA 10 card values are plummeting. One more fact... the PSA 9 pop counts are not accurate and useless. Who actually sends the old label back to PSA? Most importantly have a great week.

I think the delineation point is pre-war (SGC) vs post-war (PSA), not 1950's. For 50's Topps, pretty sure PSA rules by a lot. SGC is better for pre-war because they do a better a job than PSA at handling odd sized cards. But PSA is very much optimized for standard size cards (both 52-56T and 57T-present)
@SammyThunder
@SammyThunder 27 дней назад
Why would you think that PSA can’t handle odd sized items? Genuinely asking

I have some vintage orders at PSA and I will never submit again. The inconsistency is insane right now and the turnaround times are horrific. PSA knows that they make more money putting a 9/10 on a Pokemon card with a grader spending 10 seconds on it than grading a vintage card that involves more research, expertise, and time to evaluate from authentic to a grade of 10. I think $15 is too expensive for grading, so I am just waiting for SGC to get to $10 for vintage grading. If they don't, I will just put in Zion magpro cases.

I do believe they are Sammy. I'm an SGC guy. Always will be. But I still look at the card. Unless it's a junk slab. I'm good if the card tells me to buy it! 😉I have a Frankenstein collection and I'm proud of it!😉🤣

My take is SGC fine for grades of 6 and under for post war 1948 and up to 1980 for baseball cards Topps, Bowman. 40's & 50's Leaf and 1964 Fleer regular base issue paper cards not pack inserts. Like deckle edge or pop ups or coins or 3D ones. SCG RULES on the off beat / oddball stuff. Inserts pre 1980. Once the grade hits 7 and 8 The PSA slab Is needed more Often to return more value than a SCG slab but not much more for cards under $50 however once the card hits 3 digits the PSA slab matters to me And matters a whole lot more for grades of 9 and 10 like 30 to 40 Percent more about up to around 400 bucks. Once the card value hits 500 plus dollars PSA is must in my view 80 to 90 percent of the time. In Short my observation is too much value is left off the table if not PSA slabbed if it is slabed with a grade of 7 or higher. Alot depends on the quality/grade of the card and its last few "comps"

Great insight! Are you a dealer or are you thinking of what the cards will sell for in the future?
@tommy61nj78
@tommy61nj78 27 дней назад
@SammyThunder for me just about anyone who steps into a show is a dealer. About half the people who go to shows with the intent to sell some cards. The offers for graded cards are better than those who are not since grading takes away risk by being the arbitrator between the buyer and seller of a card. The grade is what it is a grade and usually, someone looses in any type of arbitration. It comes down to the grading of a card adds value to the seller but not to the buyer unless the card is undergraded in the eyes of the buyer.
