Saw it on Saturday, and I ha a good time. My main beef was the same as Kristian and Winston, and that was the contrast between Zach and Asher. I wish Zach was a little more toned down as Shazam, but I understand Coy's point of him still having that light hearted boy in man's body.
The Champion is not a representation of the characters mind. The champion is a representation of the character’s heart. Shazam is silly hearted because he represents Billy’s innocence within his heart. Shazam isn’t meant to represent Billy’s mindset. This is why the wizard searched for someone pure of heart. ⚡️☝️
I liked the first one. I really liked this new one!! It was genuinely funny, and the humor didn't undercut the more serious moments. Like Billy dying or Freddy protecting An from the dragon. I was worried about the Daughters of Atlas, because I am always worried when a comic book movie or show tries to create their own superhero/villain character that didn't have roots in the comics. I was more so afraid they'd be generic villains to force a conflict (which tbh I sorta felt from the first one) but I thought they were done really well! I believed in their dynamic and purpose. Murren and Liu sold the hell out of it! I agree Zach did overcook it a bit, but that could've been balanced out if we saw a bit more of Billy acting the same way. Overall, even though I recognize some of the criticisms, there wasn't anything so big it pulled me out of the movie. I was in it and enjoyed the ride all the way through. Even the Skittles thing, it was the one thing I might've thought twice about, but I got over it pretty fast.
Also, @Kristian Harloff your next rewatch should be Superman II 👀 just gotta decide which one Koy watches first. I, personally, grew up on the Donner cut, thinking that was the theatrical Superman II for most of my life, only to recently actually watch the original Lester version. Donner's is better by a mile. Lester's version is way too campy and did not age well imo.
Really really love all the actors for both the kid and adult versions of the fam and their chemistry along with the parents. All the stuff with just the siblings interacting was awesome. Really didn’t like the 3rd act. How many times are we gonna see a city overrun with some sort of alien creatures, which the side characters take care of while the lead of the movie fights the main villain who controls some sort of beam in the sky? Other than that aspect I still enjoyed it overall and wouldn’t mind a third film
I havn't seen it but my sister watched it and she said it's actually a good movie and it's really fun. this is the issue though, when the studios set up things going one way, as in Superman showing up in Shazam post credits, then they bring in Black Adam that's exactly what the Fans want to see; so when they basically pull the proverbial rug out from under fans like they did, by dropping Cavil (and basically shutting down the idea of that big Crossover movie between the three) how do you expect the Fans to feel. I mean that's the main reason why i wasn't bothered bout watching Fury of the Gods. I never really wanted to see Shazam face off against the actual Shazam Gods, i really wanted to see Superman & Shazam vs Black Adam. So now it just feels as though it's all building to nothing really. What a sheer mess DC/MCU & Lucasfilm are in right now. A lot of *Good Will* has been lost from fans, by these 3 studios lately.
Levi brought down my enjoyment of the first one. I was hoping he'd have dialed it back in this one given Asher having aged up as well, but his performance made me like this one even less. The movie was average, but Levi made it *painful*
I found levi annoying and couldnt stand how he seemed like a kid and billy seemed like a young adult. I preferred the portrayal of the two characters in the animated
No one is trying to check for mediocre comic book movies anymore. That era is dead as a doornail. If you're not gonna give the people 'SpiderMan No Way Home' thrills then your movie is going to bomb.
Loved it so much that I saw it twice. If you put a costume on me and gave me powers, I'd act differently too. On 2nd viewing, I noticed that when they zoom in on the bag of Skittles, they turn the logo away from the camera and show the back of the bag. I wish they could make another, but those kids are getting too old for those roles.
I am hoping that Shazam shows up again part of the JSA with Hawkman, Cyclones and Atom Smasher. It is a good sign that Shazam was recruited by Harcourt.
@@Wolfhunter5607 If that is the case, then the "reboot" is a lie. It is more about favoritism -"if you are on my team, you get to stay and play. If not, bye." I don't respect people like that.
I would love to see a Batman movie with no Bruce Wayne. Imagine a Judge Dredd/The Raid style movie with Batman on a mission into a place like Arkham. No sprawling story but a concise mission.
I loved this Movie. Loved the first one as well but think I loved this one a bit more. Yes more Billy would have been nice but it dident bother me much. I got really hyped for a potensial Justice Society Movie.
Wait a second... wait a second... How can you be in this space and never have seen Superman II? I can kinda get not seeing the Donner Cut, but to have never seen the Lester theatrical version either?! Wow, that's surprising.
I’m the same age of Winston and Coy and I’ve seen Superman, Superman 2, 3, and uuggh. Quest of Peace. They should have seen it lol. I mean they seen all the original Star Wars movies so they should have seen that one too.
If Billy was always forced to be an adult and or forced to be the bigger person it would make sense that Shazam is so stupid. I really dont like his version of Shazam. Thats my favorite character and they rioned him for me
I agree with you to a certain degree. Everyone expects things to be Infinity War/Endgame/Civil War level. But at the same time I don't disagree that some of the recent DC and Marvel films/series have lacked a bit. I may be a bad person to ask because I have legitimately liked everything Marvel has done in Phase 4. Yes a few things I liked more than the other. But point is, I agree. Some of these films are still great. Just everyone is comparing them to other things they shouldn't be. And expecting things to be spelled out in regards to whats coming next rather than let things build.
I'm not a big fan of Grace Randolph but she's absolutely right that people are being extra harsh towards superhero movies nowadays. These movies really need to standout in order for critics not to bash them. It's weird.
It definitely wasn’t as good as the first. I’d say the studio got positive feedback on Levi’s performance in the first and just thought more of that regardless of Billy’s non Shazam persona. I also listened to Josh’s podcast Happy Sad Confused where he interviewed Levi this week and he said that he never filmed any scene with Gal Gadot she did her footage remotely as she was filming in Europe at the time. They used a body double for same in camera shots. Levi btw is literally Shazam in real life, very much like Reynolds is Deadpool. Finally interestingly read the following about the movie; “Director David F. Sandberg said that he got his money upfront for the latest DCU sequel and apparently does not have to worry about the lack of residuals on the back end”
My family & i just saw it last night. We loved. So Fun. So Funny. Action way great. Helen reading the letter, Steve the pen. Love the Unicorns and Skittles. I do agree Shazam was a bit over cooked on playing young boy as Shazam. It never occured to me about Mary's physical appearance never changed. Loved the whole Freddy arc. Love the parents. The Wizard and Freddy together was great. My daughter loved the Wonder Woman at the end. I almost teared up when Billy did not wake up, but then my brain told me I knew he does not die int he movie, but I liked that he had bird lettered Wonder Woman and she saves him. Totally enjoyed it. I hate that not doing well at box office. Maybe they should have released in Jan or Feb when not as much competion?? Enjoyed your review, we are with Coy on this one. Loved it.
Just came home from the theater. Enjoyed it will happily add it to the hardcopy collection. First time I've been underwhelmed by a Christophe Beck score
I think anyone who's still on the fence, to check this one out. I think Fury of the Gods makes a great family film. The Shazam movies are what the Wonder Woman films should have been.
I think we gotta stop saying this is confusing until we see flash. The way the flashpoint story the timeline gets reset. For all we know this movie & the Waller series takes place after Barry resets the timeline
Two things, the first act of the movie shows what Shazam is supposed to be versus the man child (despite the wisdom of Solomon) Second when you watch Black Adam you see the Champion wasn't a goofy man child when he became the hero.
The single best selling point to this movie would have been a commercial that just said "Have you seen Superman II?" They would have my money on the spot. Heck, put that on a t-shirt and you'd get my money... ;)
My fear now, just looking how Shazam 2 did at the opening box office. Will the next 3 dc movies perform on the same level? I think the fact we know parts of this universe aren't continuing. Or at least the over all idea of them aren't continuing =(
I don't think asking if Shazam: Fury of the Gods is a bad movie is the right question. Like so many anymore, it's just a throw-away movie. See it once, never return. That has been the problem since Josstice League and the problem the MCU is now going through too. I don't blame the studios, alone for this. The fans have blame too. They signaled long ago that mediocre was passable as they swooned for cameos, end credit scenes, and self-ridicule.
Why does Coy feel the need to keep attacking the MCU in order to boost this film up?! He randomly brings up Quantumania several times and even makes a dig at the Thor movies. Just feels really unnecessary and out of character for someone like him who's usually pretty positive.
I loved the movie. It was exactly what I expected. Of course some things could have been better, but it was a solid sequel and it was really fun. I think it would have been better if they focused on Billy more instead of wasting time with Freddie. The emotional beats at the end would have hit a lot harder if they focused on Billy's emotional struggle
As someone who just got out of the theater, I liked it,it's a shame wb had no faith in the movie and a shame they moved it and move it and move it. Give it a chance to make some money. I have to agree 100% that it's a shame they made Zach a child and not someone who grew as a character
Given how the critics destroyed it, how much faith in the movie was the studio supposed to have? The movie was throw-away. But when it comes to the Shazam character, Levi clearly used the DC Lego movies as inspiration. Five flops since Josstice League because they just refuse to take the characters seriously. It appears that Muschietti took his Flash movie in the opposite direction, so we will see if the flop trend continues.
I disagree with Quantumania being a throwaway and not having an effect on the MCU. I think there is more to the ending than what appears on the surface and that Scott returns to a reality that has changed and is different than when he left. Pops of purple and green are all over which is really odd. Love the show and hope you continue to do great things. God bless!
1. darla is a child genius so it does make sense 2. bad casting, bye bye levi 3. they should have just kept him 12-14 like in the comics, then no complaints about his immaturity
HOW THE HELL HAS COY NOT SEEN SUPERMAN 2!!!! THE URGE TO NOT DISCREDIT EVERYTHING HE SAYS NOW!! SUPES 2 Is one of the greatest!! love you coy, but you gotta get on that
Zach plays the character of Shazam like a Minecraft RU-vidr. He overacts every line like he's trying to make sure the kids are paying attention rather than actually being charming or funny. I think his personality really just doesn't pull in a large adult audience from the trailers and ads.
The contrast between Zach and Asher didn't bother me much, I honestly didn't even think of it until you guys talked about it. But I do wish Asher had been in the movie more. Really weird choice. I wonder if there was a scheduling conflict or something along those lines because why would you choose to have your main character in it so little. I enjoyed the movie though and I'm bummed if this is the end for him.
That movie is just the same formula we've seen so many times. Paint by number, nothing new. Didnt work for black adams, doesnt work for this one. Its not superhero fatigue, its that formula fatigue. Give us something new!
I think the end credit scene was meta. The worm is James Gunn and the audience is Mark Strong. That now we have to wait longer for the plan ("reboot ). To me this was like the Captain America post credit scene about "patience" trolling the audience
That would make sense if it wasn’t so subtle and exactly the same post credits scene as the 1st one. After sat waiting for the credits to end for so long I like to see something that was worth the wait
Hey kristian just wondering why you dont do these episodes live disscusions style i feel like you would get alot of streamlabs and superchats spitballing with the fans
I'm probably in the minority, but I actually liked this one better than the first one. However, I agree about how weird it is that Billy is incredibly childish when he's in superhero form. That's something that bothers me about both movies. If it wasn't Zachary Levi playing him, he'd very intolerable. I have to disagree about the foster parents, though. I don't recall them doing much in the first film either. At least in this one, they tried to help out in the 3rd act when shit hit the fan. Also, I didn't mind the Skittles stuff. It was a cute and funny ongoing bit. I also had no problem with the ending. Obviously, they weren't gonna let Billy stay dead. One thing that did kind of bother me that didn't make sense was Hespera's sudden concern about Kalypso destroying Earth. Both of them turned those people in the museum into stone and made that teacher jump off the school roof among other things and now we're supposed to forgive her like she had nothing to do with any of it? Come on. Some minor gripes, but I dug the movie overall and it's a bummer it isn't performing better at the box office.
I thought it was a decent movie, I think i liked it a little more than the last one. The only scene i didnt care for was the dream scene with fake wonder-woman that kind of took me out.
I had issues with this film. I'll list the issues but this will contain spoilers, kinda. 1. The villains DON"T work. It's a novel idea to cast women as villains AND I love the actresses. But they have no COOL creed. I saw the actresses and not the characters. When I heard about the casting I thought it was a bad move and it was. (Also some males won't go to the film because of it I'm sure. You gotta overcome that bias and these actresses sadly don't.) 2. The first film succeeded on the charm of the adult actor doing kid stuff. In this film the character is almost 18, not really a kid and for me the Shazam character came of as silly this go round and kinda creepy. (The actor playing the younger role, was old enough to be more interesting with the powers instead of the aged up character playing immature. and the younger audience would have showed up. Make him kind of a DC Spider-man.) 3. They wrote the super family as blondering failures. Funny MAYBE, but not cool or exciting. The joke killed the film. 4. I'm tired of the hero's being weakened to make the story work. De-powering the family just came off less interesting. Why given them powers to start then? The real dark moments were so dark that I was pulled out of the film. The demons actions were horrific and what happen to the teacher equally so, but the film just went right back to comedy. This was not a good movie sorry. And that post credit really makes no sense. P.S. I hear that the Justice Society from Black Adam were supposed to be in that after credit, but WB had decided not to move forward with those characters so they used the Peacemaker crew. So if so why was Henry Cavill added to Black Adam given WB's not liking the Black Adam crew.?
I don't think Shazam 2 is a bad movie, the issue is that general audiences don't know or care about shazam and other C, D level characters (ant man, eternals, shang shi, black adam, etc). I think both Marvel and DC studios need to focus again on their A list characters (Spiderman, Xmen, Superman, Batman) and use them to introduce lesser known characters like Shazam to general audiences and get them excited again for the cinematic universe. It wasn't until the first avengers movie that audiences fell in love with lesser known characters in Iron man, Cap, and Thor.
I have to disagree with the Critics RT% score on this one. I thought it was a lot of fun. Perfect? No. Is it a movie that has a lot of agency? No. But who said it had to be? This is not *that* movie. This was a nice family comedy-action flick. As with the first one, the family dynamic is what really makes the movie pop. I do think though that a major down-side to upping the roles of Billy's siblings (namely Freddie), is that Billy himself was short-changed. Granted we do get exposition of what he's feeling at the beginning, but it's never really fleshed out during the movie, the way his story in the first one was. I think Winston said in last week's pod: we BARELY get to see Billy. And to piggyback on that a bit, while the other members of the Shazamily legit feel like the kids just in adult bodies, Shazam himself feels like a different character altogether. This was kind of an issue with the first one too, but we could maaaaybe excuse that with the excitement Billy has of discovering his powers and being relatively younger. Here, he's on the verge of 17/18 years old. In few times we do see Billy, he clearly has a more toned-down personality, in contrast to the more humorous, almost airheaded Shazam. All that being said, my crew and I had a lot of fun with it. The youngest family member Darla definitely had THE line that legit broke our theatre into laughs and applause. Definitely bummed that it's not making a lot of money, and nor is it getting love from critics... I guess this many years with so many superhero movies, you can't just be "okay" to get the love.
I have registered as soon as you announced it! Do something for Star Wars Celebration! We are going from UAE with the 501st Garrison and it would be awesome at least to take pictures together!
I absolutely adored this movie. I found it wholesome and fun and a ton of twists and turns.within with fun acting and so on. Zach Levi I can't stand as shazam lol but even still it was great. Damn shame it's going to be done with more than likely
Coming to drop a like and comment for support! But I haven’t seen the movie and likely won’t. Still haven’t seen the original but the reviews haven’t made me interested at all. I agree, I think it’s dead in the water with these next two weekends releases coming up
Everybody in the Shazam family feels like Shazam but Zachary Levi and that’s a big problem for the movie. Very goofy idk why James Gunn would keep this actor but let go of Henry cavil.
Yeah, there's just nothing exceptional about Shazam 2. It's an average movie, an average superhero movie, made competently. It doesn't really have much to say, let alone anything new to say, and it feels like it exists just to exist. I'm honestly past the spectacle just for spectacle phase. Yes, it's cool you can do all of this stuff on-screen. But tell me a story that makes all of this spectacle matter.
Good discussion guys. Spoilers!!! I thought each act got better. Dragon dome final battle was better than many final comic book set pieces. The ending was slightly undone. I would have had billy reborn on god realm without the family. They are mourning and rebuilding without him with help of Wizard.
Shazam 2 is not a bad movie, but it is inferior to the first one. The first movie did a much better job balancing all the characters and family. For a movie about family, they are mostly missing; this is pretty much a Shazam and Freddy movie. There should be more development with the family in the second movie. Asher Angel only only in 2 or 3 scenes, and they were the best -emotion and heart of the movie.
Below average ……. Once again. You kept Gal, Ezra, Levi, Mamoa and you dropped Henry and Ben (on screen) just odd to me…… We also got another 90’s style movie akin to Black Adam. What were they doing if they didn’t introduce the DCU? Aquaman isn’t even tracking well. Superman I think isn’t going to be a palette-cleanser. It’s too close to all these movies…. The future isn’t bright right now.
This movie was a waste of my time and my money. It’s not better than the first one despite what some say. I have no clue how these subpar scripts are getting greenlit.
I went to a matinee filled with families and everyone seemed to have a good time. I personally enjoyed it. I agree that Asher should have been in it more esp for the emotional arc. When he and his foster mom hugged I got teary eyed. WW cameo would have been nice if I hadn’t been spoiled. Fuckers. Anyways this a good movie that is getting dumped on by all the changes going on right now. Timing sucked. Why didn’t they release it last year before announcing Gunn? Stupid.
I don't feel bad for Winston and Coy not watching Superman 2. I think they should've been watched it after seeing Man of Steel. This show was funny. I don't like how immature Shazam is. I get the first film but all knowledge from the Gods I think he should've matured instead of this Goofy dumb like Thor. This wasn't my must watch so hearing how it went I'm okay with is entertaining. I'll most likely watch with kids. Good show.
