Is Ships at Sea the best ship simulator game? I give you my honest opinion in this Ships at Sea review.
Many people claimed that Ships at Sea from Misc Games would set a new benchmark for ship simulator games when it released. Well, now that it's out in early access, how does this new game stack up against its older rivals?
Does Ships at Sea offer something new to the genre of ship simulation games, besides Unreal Engine 5 graphics?
As a big fan of ship simulation games, I'm giving you my honest opinion about how well Ships at Sea gameplay represents ships and boats, and about whether it offers an enjoyable sailing experience.

The Sim needs some work/improvement's, I really don't like the No mooring, No real time or any type of time adjustment, Teleportation/fast travelling, I will keep a eye on the progress of the game, and it looks like the water physics are a massive improvement and the graphics do look very nice, But the gameplay defiantly needs work

Yeah, I agree with you on everything you said. I want this to be great more than anything, but I feel it was too far off to be made public at this time.

If you're looking for a realistic sailing simulator, I recommend Sailwind. It's a few years old, but the physics are excellent. I'm not sure if you'll like the survival aspects of it (hunger, thirst and tiredness bars). There are also missions and goods trading. The graphics are sort of cartoon-ish, but still pretty good.

A good watch. Could work the other way too. I.e. using the rowboat mechanic to get (slower) folk past the refund period…in hopes of getting a boat with an engine and a ‘better’ experience 🤔

Possibly. To be honest, I enjoyed the little wooden starter boat in F:NA, and liked sailing it. This rowing boat just wasn't fun to operate though.

Hmm not eactly Kayak VR now is it. These things need the phsycis to be 100% and this just isn't. It is a pretty game though and a lot of the physics can be improved.

Yep. Unfortunately. they chose to describe it on the Steam page as "the next generation of ship simulation," so delivering wonky physics (even in early access) was always going to draw massive criticism. It reminds me of when The Bus came out with it's fancy graphics, but it had worse bus physics than OMSI 2.

I’m a real skipper typing this on a boat it’s not very realistic, it’s arcady. Sea behaves unrealistically.

Its still very early acces the first fishing boat does not even have door animation for deck and cabin😅..boyance somewhat improved from the 2 previous titles but jta still horrendous

I feel like, for a ship simulator, buoyancy is something that should have been perfected at the tech demo/prototype stage. It should be the bare minimum to have correct vessel physics for early access.

I wassn't expecting much, to be honest. I've several hundred hours in both Fishing Barents and North Atlantic so I'm used to Misc Games jank and..... this looks like they managed to make it WORSE. What a missed opportunity for Misc Games.

Yep. I tried spending another 2 hours in SAS yesterday, but gave up and spent the rest of the day playing F:NA again.

Very disappointed with the game, I was expecting a hardcore experience, and it is the complete opposite. Incredibly Deadliest catch alaska storm is still the best after so many years, a game that one has to think about strategies, if the season is bad the ship deteriorates. This game is very linear, without competitions, without risks, they tell you where the fish are, everything is given away, and it makes it totally boring in a few hours. Sonar marks the fish directly which is meaningless, it is impossible to make a mistake.

By not solely catering to a hardcore crowd, they are likely to have a potentially greater exposure and likely a larger customer base, so from a purely commercial perspective it makes sense imho 👍🏾. This is still very early access, so additional mode options/‘sliders’, may arrive down the road.

@Lucpol1986 If they don't want to cater to a hardcore crowd for business reasons then fair enough, that's their prerogative. However, on the Steam page they describe Ships at Sea as "the next generation of ship simulation" and then deliver a level of ship simulation that's worse than Virtual Sailor NG. That's a massive let-down, considering the fact that VSNG is effectively based on 15 year old code.

@@TheTransportDepot That’s true. It may get better on that front, once the title is out of very early access…but no guarantees I suppose. (VS-NG is a great title!)

With as many boat sim games this dev team has released, you'd think they would have it figured out by now. Seems like yet another cash grab and abandon to me.

I think that was the biggest disappointment for me. They already had the code base for F:NA, which was made in Unreal Engine 4. Therefore, you'd think the addition of Nvidia Waveworks and the upgrade to UE5 would lead to a more progressed product than this. It's not like they had to totally start from nothing.

Sadly not. However, they're apparently using Nvidia Waveworks, so I think good results should be achievable. I just think they haven't really taken the time to get it working properly. Perhaps they should have focussed on the vessel physics instead of making fish with eyes that pop out as they die a painful death.
