New Zealand produces 40x more food then us Kiwis consume. The prices we pay are linked to the export prices, because we are held captive by the food industry being so far from competition. It's notable supermarket owners and large food producers are extremely rich in New Zealand.

We live here in the South Island of New Zealand and have been living off our own vegetable garden plus grow a lot on the glasshouse all year. It is a very big rip off for all New Zealanders to go out and buy from the supermarket, and many I know are living from the free food parcels.

You mentioned before that NZ and Ireland have similar climates. NZ is quite a bit warmer, with longer summers. Surrounded by 0ceans we do have cool winters, but hardly ever any snow at ground level. If you put NZ in the same latitudes in the northern hemisphere, the bottom of the South Island would be near the south coast of England and Ireland, with the North Island around about Spain !
@GlenAndMado
@GlenAndMado Год назад
Thats absolutely insane didn't realise it was that long! anyways yeah we definitely have accepted the fact that the weather is quite different now compared to Ireland. its currently winter here in NZ but to be honest it truly feels like summer here in the bay of plenty 😂 loving it because I was dreading another winter here. Ireland has a very damp cold during the winter and it hits your bones. but here get the shorts and t shirt out haha.

Not sure if someone else has mentioned, but our salmon farms almost got wiped out by two marine heat waves in two years. That's why it's so expensive. Plus with added global events that cause inflation.

Kicking off with buying tomatoes out of season (whaaaaaat), they're also horrible in winter... to be honest groceries have gotten SO expensive a lot of people we know have gone back to growing vegetables and bartering instead of buying. The supermarkets are laughing their asses off all the way to the bank at the expense of the average kiwi. In the region we live in there are a lot of local producers so we are very blessed, but the average urban consumer is getting screwed. Haven't been to the supermarket for two weeks. We also just buy whatever is on special, like a LOT of it, and pressure can it and store it for later. Seasonal eating is the way to go!
@GlenAndMado
@GlenAndMado Год назад
yeah true that we still like to eat some things that are out of season.. not alot but the odd thing! very interesting fact and hopefully by people growing there own things it will cause deflation and bring the prices back down. we will definitely start to adjust our behaviours and try to get all the local grown goods at the markets.

It’s cheaper to get fruit and veggies from a vegetable store. I work in a supermarket and prices can vary from store to store, but overall Pac’N’Save is around $1 cheaper on most stuff from other stores.

With a population of 5,2 million spread over an area the size of the UK, where the supply chains across the country is inefficient and everybody involved is clipping the 'for profit at least cost' financial ticket, food and most every day items are expensive. The other factor is the country imports most everyday items which are at the whims of global economic, manufacturing and supply chains uncertainties.

We're all getting skinny here in NZ due to the rising food prices and the general cost of living.. i mean look at the petrol prices.. it's $3 a liter and over $2 for diesel. There must be an agenda to bring in electric cars and depopulation.
@GlenAndMado
@GlenAndMado Год назад
In fairness petrol is cheaper here then Ireland even with the hefty price increase lately! Before the government tax increase it was great for us 😂 but New Zealand is just mostly old cars so it will take a long time for the country to adapt to electric cars I think. The food is costing me though as I eat for 3 people so it ain’t easy on that part 😂
@rosselliot8971

NZ is not cheap. Food. Power. Petrol. Rent. All expensive. It's got nothing to do with NZ's isolation. We have a large and expensive government, and regulations that make food, fuel and housing expensive. ' NZ used to be cheap but those days are gone. Two cars in the garage but nothing in the fridge, as Jasper Carrot used to say.

sadly a huge Australian supermarket chain Woolworth's has been working hard on driving up NZ food prices. Then came Jacinda Arderns hopeless leftie government that taxed everything to death and forced rents and food up further. Thats why kiwis are screaming for a third player Aldi to come to New Zealand. I try and shop Pak N Save as its kiwi owned and cheaper than Australian Woolworth's. I say bring Aldi to NZ asap.

Yes, prices are definitely expensive in NZ, even compared to here in Australia. Australia are very lucky to have Aldi, as we used to have a bit of a duopoly with Coles and Woolworths and prices were not competitive, before Aldi arrived. As NZ wages are around 20 - 50% lower than Australia, NZ consumers really would have to dig deep to afford the basics at their respective supermarkets. GST is also 15% on food in NZ. Really not good for the lower socioeconomic income earners but successive NZ Governments will fix this issue, with a sense of urgency 😂👍🏼 NZ Politicians, keeping the cost of living high for Kiwis, since 1979 😋 Also, why is Glen in shorts and a t-shirt in winter and in the supermarket where it’s usually cold AF 🥶
@GlenAndMado

@@GlenAndMado Apparently Lidl was looking at coming to Australia but haven't hearing anything else about it since Covid. You will be shocked at the differences in prices, between the two countries. Don't get me started on the cost of fuel in NZ and cell/mobile phone plans. NZ is back in the dark ages :( Love my home country but just can't live there as I want a financially stable and higher standard of living, which Australia provides (in my experience).
