Web 2.0 resources have the power to reach millions of unique viewers, and to make unknown people, and animals, into celebrities overnight. Such has been the case for the slow lorises, a group of threatened primates from Southeast Asia. I describe how the prevalence of loris videos and photographs on the World Wide Web have both advanced our understanding of slow loris science and taxonomy but at the same time hindered their conservation.
Anna Nekaris is Professor in Primate Conservation and Anthropology at Oxford Brookes University, and course tutor of their world-reknowned MSc in Primate Conservation programme. She previously conducted long-term studies of Indian and Sri Lankan slender lorises and studied the community ecology of Sri Lanka's rainforest primates, including toque macaques and purple-faced langurs. In particular she has examined the effects of fragmentation on populations throughout Sri Lanka's sparse remaining rainforests. Her current research project looks at the diversity of Asian slow lorises, both in the field and using museum specimens. Morphological, genetic, behavioural and vocal analyses are being used to uncover diversity within this group, and are being used to develop long-term plans for their conservation. She currently leads an international programme The Little Fireface Project, working to conserve the slow loris through ecology, conservation education and empowerment of local people. She employs the power of social networking in her research to help reverse the negative impact it has had on slow loris conservation.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Dr Anna Nekaris is one of my absolute heroes. The Slow lorises are so important for the eco system. They are great forest pollinators and pest controllers....etc. They don't like being touched by humans - they live all their lives in the trees. They sleep on the branches during the day and live the life that was intended for them during the night - so they suffer immensly by being pets. Their eyes hurt from daylight because they are nocturnal wild animals. They are wonderful, important beings and they need protection from humans like so many other important wild animals.

I loved your talk Anna. People will justify anything if it suits them. That's why we have zoos or as I call Animal jail. You don't need me to give you any more examples, injustice is everywhere. Keep fighting for the borean slow loris. They need you.

Shes concerned about the lorises being smuggled being because they are becoming extinct and suffering high amounts of cruelty. Humans are not a critically extinct species. I am totally behind Anna on this, so much so that we are raising money and awareness this weekend in my shop in Oxford. I really hope we can put a stop to it!

I saw that Loris eating the rice ball on the internet. I thought it was cute and it is but I immediately felt sad that it was in captivity. You can plainly see that the animal was out of its environment and even a zoo would have a challenge replicating its habitat. I'm all for You Tube putting a ban on these videos for the simple fact that many are naïve, myself included initially. I came here to educate myself more on this species and now I feel my impression of sadness was well founded.

Why is it so bad to domesticate an animal which accepts domestication? I'm totally against bad treatment and extinction of animals and their natural habitats. But extinction is a fact. And I think, if an animal is totally capable to live well with humans, in a comfortable house with plenty of food and love, then why not? I'd fight for regulation. I think every way to preserve animal's lives is valid, even if it's at home, in urban cities. Once cats, dogs, humans, weren't natives of the cities as well.

Domestication by plucking their teeth out with nail clippers and traumatising them, oftentimes resulting in death? Really? I don't think the domestication of cats, dogs, etc involved cruelty.

Lorena Queiroz apologies, my mistake. I had thought you were supporting the domestication of slow loris. Well, I think the video isn't against domestication in general, just against domestication which involves cruelty.

I am supporting domestication of any animal that can accept it. If there would be a safe way to domesticate a slow loris, i would defend it. But I'm not that much aware of what is needed to make it possible. For sure I'm against bad treatment of any kind of living being. :)

Lorena Queiroz For every one primate that makes it through the pet trade, this represents about 10 that died in the process. It is precisely this demand for primates (and other exotic animals) as pets that is contributing to their endangerment and extinction. For many species, such as the slow loris, this demand for "domestication" is their NUMBER ONE threat to survival in the wild. This is the exact opposite of "preserving the animal's lives". A process that causes extinction in the wild decidedly falls under the category of "bad treatment" that you are "totally against". Even well meaning and loving pet owners of these exotic animals are contributing to wide spread devastation of these animals, even if they are ignorant to the process. It is very important that the public is properly educated on this issue, because many people may share your view point having no idea this mis-imformed perspective is only perpetuating the problem. I really hope that you choose to educate yourself on this and continue to use your voice for the good of these and other animals endangered by the pet trade. (I am a professor and researcher in primatology with 15 years of experience in the field, so I know what I am talking about here).

ALUCARD98765432 while that is a serious issue there are many people and organizations already speaking out against human trafficking. Animals like these; that are being heavily exploited and have so little known about them need a voice to educate the world of their existence and importance. Allot of people consider human beings to be of more worth than animals but I don't believe we are any more important or deserving than they are. And we need them to survive and continue our existence more than they need us.
