Paella and jamon remind me of many Spanish foods popular in the Philippines, authentically served at Casino Espanol de Manila, a club established in 1844 by Spaniards living in the Phils as their exclusive venue for recreational and social activities. It is still popular here.
@Ginger Of course we don't have the best pasta and pizza, but that's obvious, isn't it? Those dishes are not from our culture, so it's difficult to find a good pizza in Spain, but as I said, try to get a paella on italy for example, they won't do it as well as us and I don't blame them, its just because is not their culture
@Ginger Of course you can eat something else that traditional food, but don't expect that those dishes will be as good as the original dish from the original country. I mean, If I go to Japan I will try to eat local cuisine, because I already know that if I order pizza or pasta it won't be as good as it is in Italy
I answer myself...hahahah Why I think so....?? Because both countries prioritize how the ingredients taste, they don´t disguise them.and the result is amazingly simple and tasteful....
@Ginger Y que carajos tiene que ver que se coma pan en España con su extensa historia de calidad culinaria...??? Sos bastante idiota con tus argumentos. Aprendé a comer buena comida y después ponete a cacarear. Ambos países se caracterizan por tener las mejores materias primas para cocinar y te ponés a hablar de pan......
Alejandro Fernandi Of course, Cabrales’ croquetas have cabrales chess. The point is that croquetas always have bechamel, then different flavors can be added, ham, cod, tuna, etc
Nighimire ... cuando visites en esta época el sur de España (Sevilla) y veas a gente vestida de blanco con un capirote en la cabeza, NO HUYAS!! no es el Kus-Klus-Kan😄🤗 ...welcome ti Spain!
@@DanegerAndStacey You have just started world war III adding butter to la tortilla de patata hahaha.I´m from Oviedo and very thankful to you two for sharing your experience .Cheers.
@@manuelcolloto I guess there won't be war, but many people had smiled . Who the hell put butter in a tortilla de patataS?.🤭 By the way, that creamy a little uncooked centre is the authentic way to go. For more joy, and a less cooked even, go to the neighbour region of Cantabria and ask for a good tortilla preña.
My grand parents were from Northern Spain, Asturias and Galicia. I was thinking of my grandmas’s cooking and thought I’m come here to see if anything looks familiar. Love the comments. This makes me want to visit the land of my roots!
Oh Spain! This one brought back some good memories. Such a great country! We spent a lot of time in Costa Brava there which was an amazing region! 👌- Trevor
I was in Spain a couple of years ago and me and my friend decided to check out Oviedo(Asturias) and Santander(Cantabria). This I need to share- the food in northern Spain is absolutely wonderful- reasonably priced, looks great and oh so delicious! To this day I still dream to going back to northern Spain not only for its glorious food but also for the amazing cities and landscape. Thank you for sharing your experience.
So happy you had the chance to visit as well! Amazing place isn't it? Did you catch our first 2 videos exploring around the area - maybe even some places you got to visit as well in there. 1 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OdKI-fHG_ZY.html 2 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d_a83t4Dmeo.html
I'm from Santander, and you're sayin' the truth, prices are cheap, specially when you compare us to Barcelona (I was on Barcelona the last summer, and a bottle of water costed 3 Euros, like what the fuck, it's water), hope someday you come back!
I´m from Oviedo, and my advice for someone who's looking to taste northern food is: try to also taste low-end, cheap food. In this video everything is high-end, "poshy" food, and you miss the casual bar tastes that really make Asturias an awesome place to eat!
Came here to comment the same. Obviously expensive restaurants are going to be great, and they are. But in Asturias the good thing is that I can risk it and try cheaper "chigres" and still succeed in 90% of them with great dishes at cheap price.. it's more a thing to do if you have more time and can search for them tho.
@@DanegerAndStacey Go for "Menú del Día" next time, more common in Northern Spain that Southern, you'll be surprised how much food you get for 12€ (3 courses, bread and wine included). Of course, they are good menús del día and bad ones, but living in London sometimes I feel embarrassed to pay so little when I'm there.
Such an inspiration. Currently travelling across the North of Spain for 5 weeks and it's amazing. My favourite part of the world. It just does not get any better. Wish more RU-vidrs would realise that Northern Spain is incredible. Very few seem to visit here!
Started in Northern Portugal then headed up to North West Spain. Now moving across the North of Spain. Currently in Oviedo. Santander and Bilbao next. Coruna was amazing. You guys should put that on your list for sure.
@@edvins8863 It depends on the year, this Christmas the weather was Sunny and warm, but you never know. It can rain in summer and be Sunny in winter. Thats Asturias. You have to take a raincoat in any time, just in case. There are many Museums, bars, restaurants, pubs and historical buildings to visit when its rainy. And visit the landscapes, mountains and beaches when its Sunny. There are many things to do. You can ski and go to the beach the same day in spring. It's like a small continent in one place
There are two types of Spaniards: those who like tortilla with onions ("cebollistas") or no onions (sincebollistas"). In my opinion, the seconds must be in prison 🤣
Just to let you know that zumalakarregi didnt add onions to the omelette he just invented so the tortilla de patatas is historically without onion bazingaa
Great video! Just one clarification about the spanish omelette: no butter is used at all mate, only olive oil! Butter is hardly ever used in spanish cooking and definitely not for the spanish omelette
Well, pork fat and butter were common in the Asturian gastronomy several years ago due the lack of olive trees we have (we have no Sun, we have no olive trees), so I had to make this point :')
Alejandro Fernandi yes, butter is really used in Asturias for cooking or just eating with a piece of bread. Not in Spanish omelette, but in many other dishes. We have good milk and then delicious butter :) I enjoyed a lot this video
You have been in one of the regions of Spain with the best gastronomy on the planet ... there you have proven that you eat very well, cheaply and with an extraordinary variety ... that the cider poured as it should is delicious, that the bean stew is incredible, that there is everything and very rich ... the last time I went there I gained 20 pounds in 2 weeks
As a rule of thumb, Atlantic shores Spanish food is more energetic and full of cholesterol than the so called Mediterranean, due to the cold weather and traditional hard farm working. Olive oil is almost omnipresent in the Iberian peninsula, and we only use butter or lard for baking cakes and the like :)
A fantastic vlog! I love the way you broke up the food review sections with scenic or architectural shots. This was one of the best food review videos I've yet seen as a result. You have totally revised my perception of Spain and I think this region is the one to go for. It is simply amazing. As always, you guys find that different aspect of a destination!
Thanks Rex. Funny though, it was really difficult at the time to remember which video we were filming for and tricky to recall when pulling the footage into editing haha. Worth it though, fun to see the videos split like this :)
207/5000 Curiosity: Galicia is the only place on the planet where the name of the same fish changes according to its size. If you say you ate sea bass, depending on how you call it, your listener will also know what size it was.
If it’s good depends on personal opinions, but it is undoubtedly overall very healthy. Spaniards have one of the longest life expectancies on earth (and in 2040, they will surpass Japan to become the country with the best life expectancy in the world).
Ginger it depends what you eat of course! I don’t eat pastries nor too much sugar. I don’t know where you’re from, but I found everything with extra sugar in the UK, even meals!!
@Ginger have you ever lived outside of Spain?? Because I have seen children in the UK consuming way more fat and sugar than an average Spanish child, plus in Spain the regulations around fat and sugar are quite strict compared to the ones in other countries. We live in the UK and if you have a coca-cola or a fanta you feel the difference, it has more sugar here. We do have rubbish food in Spain, every country has it, but our diet (the Mediterranean diet, which also includes Italy, Portugal...) is way healthier. We also cook more from scratch which also helps. I have been looked at like a crazy person when I take my home-cooked lunch to work, but I grew up knowing what I put in my mouth.
I love to see how the English enjoy our beautiful country. I currently live in the UK for a couple of years, and one of the things I miss the most is our food. I am very happy to see that people know how to appreciate all the good things that our country offers, not only food, but our hospitality, joy, good weather, etc. Thank you very much and may VIVA SPAIN!
The north of Spain is such amazing place that you need a lot of time to explore, from Galicia to País Vasco. I'm from Asturias and today I am still discovering new fantastic places to go. The gastronomy is one of the more riches of Spain, our cheeses are incredible and we have one of the most expensive of the world which can reach more than 1.000€/kg, a madness. Places like Oviedo, Gijón, Llanes, Villaviciosa, The Oscos and much more. Our neighbours, for example Lugo in Galicia and its "Playa de las Catedrales" one of the most beautiful beaches of Spain and it's very near to Asturias, our other neighbours of Cantabria with Altamira Cave, all their food like seafood, octopus and empanada (pastry turnover filled with meat, fish, apple or whatever you want) in Galicia, Quesada Pasiega or Sobaos two really delicious desserts of Cantabria. A big hi and glad you enjoy your visit to Spain.
I live in Cantabria, the food is excellent and delicious;you should visit Santander, obviously, Lierganes, Comillas, Barcena Mayor for example, and eat cocido montañés in Carmona or Tudanca and cocido lebaniego in Potes
Just came to Á Coruña just 2 months ago and lived in this charming town Betanzos. Yes it's underrated, coming from the Philippines you will only hear, read and see on social media famous cities and places like Madrid, Barcelona and the south provinces. But I'm loving the underrated North. And definitely someone will love this place once they've visted, dined with amazing food. (From once a Pacific girl almost my life now enjoying the Atlantic charm😍)
1:30 we don't actually call them sandwitches, the way they are called in ALL Spain is "Pinchos", you're right saying it's a snack eated one or two hours before lunch or as we say "Aperitivo". Great video, really happy people like Spanish food and culture and are interesed as well in discovering many underrated beautiful cities and landscapes all around the country
Actually the way they are called in most of Spain is montaditos. Also, they ate a Serranito that is actully andalusí. No drama with the locations tho, the beautiful thing about Spanish cousine is that some 'core' dishes are shared in all the different autonomies and then each one have their own specialities.
In Spain we have really good food, that’s one of the things I like the most. The bad part of it comes when u go to other countries and u miss your food :(
@Sun&Rain Only the best food can be basic and great at the same time. We have the best porks over here, we know how to feed them to get the best ham. Ttrust me, it isnt because im used to it, its because its great.
Hi Guys. Thanks for the video! I am from Asturias and it is really nice to see how people from abroad enjoys our meal. The food is really good, but after going to Asturias you have to smash yourself in the gym for a month. We have a brotherhood in Asturias called "la cofradía del colesterol".
I always go to Galicia, and a couple of years back we spent a couple of week in Peñaullan off Pravia.... Nice base to know the Principado. Wow! I did truly loved the experience! Cool beaches, nice sceneries, amanzing towns and truly good foor. There wea a bunch of brit families enjoining their stay too! grande Asturias
Las Croquetas are made with Bechamel, the bechamel is made with flour and milk and while stirring continuously you added olive oil or butter and a little of salt, if you want ham ( jamon) you throw very small pieces, bechamel can be given many things, such as chichen of course you can also add cheese preferably blue, you have to de careful that lumps do not come out, I recommend a tutorial on RU-vid to do the Bechamel.
Croquetas don´t have cheese usually , they have creamy bechamel made only with milk, butter and flour. Croquetas and tortilla are the best food in the world. I love your videos about Spain! Thank you so much for visiting our country.
LOVE you enjoyed our country that much! Asturias is a natural paradise as you guys said! Anda the food is amazing!!! Sad you didn’t try CACHOPO, that is to die for...
@Ginger well First of all I LOVE people Who try to be understood, through one lenguagge or more as me with my terrible english And i LOVE " the spanish" of all over the world even that invented for the occasion. Maybe cause here we are born bilngual un the most strict sense. In Spain we live with four official and legal lenguagges and several "variantes" that,s why our ears don,t get panic with " choriso" Thanksssss for reading my strange english have a nice day Very good your example with " Javi" 👍
Some of the spots we visited were definitely higher end, but there are plenty of awesome meals there for a few euros. We'll go back and explore deeper next time.
@@DanegerAndStacey Definitely not for Working Class :) That's what I like keep it up and keep uneducated people at bay :) I know a bit salty but hey ho If u can't afford Middle Class food why watching a Video :)? and complaining about food not being suitable for your Penny Pincher Budget rofl reply to Effie Colida Comment
@@dan17uk I can tell you that tortilla de patatas, fabada, croquetas, cider, 'pregnant bread' and many other foods they showed are exquisite and perfectly available to everybody. Although I can definitely see why you thought that:)
You can get the same or even better product very very cheap, just not so fancy as you see in the video. There's a milion places to eat but our friends Daneger and Stacey chosed some classy ones haha
Not really, most of the ingridents are rather poor. Croquetas are an example of this really cheap ingredients, but they're a pain in the ass to prepare. Also some "luxury" food isn't that much of a luxury in spain. Olive oil costs a fourth of what it costs in the US. Sea food is also cheap since Spain has a lot of sea. All in all in northern Spain you can get an amazing meal with lots of food wine, cider or beer for 15-20 bucks. If you know places and what to order you can eat extremely well for even less 10-12€
The Mamuchos from the rest of spain cocido madrileño??sorry but no cocido madrileño it’s from Madrid only☺️. Every part of Spain is very different, traditions, culture, language, food ... I think the only food that we have in common all the communities of Spain is the potato omelette (tortilla de patatas 0.57s which by the way has eggs that's why it's so creamy )
Maria Cancelas I know. I’m from Madrid. I was just saying in general for me, my favorite food is cocido madrileño. Sorry it translated like that Maria.
Hello , I'm from Spain. I recommend you to go to Valencia ( In Spain ) . Food like Paella ( with ham or fish ) , the drink called Horchata ( in a restaurant called Daniel in Alboraya ) , the best oranges from all spain are there too , and delicious fish meals and a lot of tasty Tapas ( its like appetizer when you go to restaurants , there are a lot and all are very good ).
Spanish omelette doesn't have butter or chives, what you do is " boil" the potatoes with the onion, which means frying them slowly so they will get soft
Many thanks for the video, D+S ...but but but: PLEASE don't say "choriTSo"!! Chorizo is a Spanish, not an Italian, word! (It's "choreetho" if you're in Spain -- though I'll let you say "choreesso" if you're in Latin America!)
Hahaha we only had 2 days, it's hard to get eeevvvery word perfect. We know the correct pronounciation, you can see with the way we say gracias etc. Can't win em all.
I watched your video while having lunch. Your food looked so much better, but at least it didn't make me hungrier than I was already was :) Looks like a great foodie gateway location.
Great video!! It's very beautifully filmed, and love how you show and comment the food. We made a video trying spanish christmas sweets. What do you think about christmas sweets?
First time watching one of your videos and I was very surprised! Can really see the hard work that was put into making the video. Great editing and loved how you guys really dared to try everything instead of judging or being picky (like many other youtubers). So anyway, keep up the great work and your authenticity! Going to subscribe right now, x.
Holy moli.....Looks so yum! Hubs and I are making omelettes now cause we're hangry after watching hahahahahha. Beautiful way to end this leg of your journey...By making us all hungry hahhahahaha 🍻
@@DanegerAndStacey So if you decide go to Extremadura you can't miss Mérida. There is one of the most important Roman Theaters and best conservated. Sorry for my english. Like they say, Cáceres is full of history, nature and amazing little places.
Saludos.
It Might be just me! but since you went to Spain your Vlogs got better! well for one Daneger your wearing proper shirts, no more sleeveless t-shirts! and the quality of your filming is more professional, seems like you gone to a higher level of Videos.
I'm torn on this one :P The sleeveless are coming back fast, we're in Bali now haha. Thanks for the good feedback though, this was a fast trip but was all about filming 100% first so maybe the different mind set upped my game a bit. - Dane
One thing to note about Asturian cider is that it's the most social a beberage can be. It's a drink to consume with other people. It shines brigher when you have it with a group of people in a merendero (outdoors). Also, beware, it gets you tipsy much faster than it seems ^_^'
For some reason this video keeps saying that 'this format is unavailable for viewing'. Has anyone else had this problem? I've have attempted to watch this several times but keep getting this message. All other videos work normally.
Well.New Zealand has been fully explored by all you.so ,when return to Northen Spain?. The rocky, fierce and outstanding Costa da Morte(death's coast) in Galicia it's waiting .
The reason we have dinner so late is because we leave work late too; anyway i wouldn´t say 10 or 11, but 9 or 10 instead (11 is too way late even for Spain). Normally the people stop working at 7:00 or even 8:00 in the night, so they go to buy some things before arriving home, and they get to the house over 8:00 or 8:30 more or less. Regarding the stop or break you mentioned in the middle of the morning, not all the people can afford it and it depends on your boss and the amount of work you have. Goverment workers or officials normally have time to do this break, but it really depends on the job. In construction sites they also do it, but only because they work 9 or 10 hours and a rest is needed in the middle of the morning to endure the long work hours, but it´s not allowed in all jobs. Also i would like to mention that normally independent small shops and familly bussiness close the doors a couple of hours in the afternoon until 5 in the evening, because they go home to have lunch, and then they come back. Regarding big malls and shopping centers, they are open all day long until night. There are a lof of crazy myths about spanish working culture and schedules, some of them have part of truth, and many of them are directly ridiculous, normally spread by people visiting the country once or twice but never really worked here. To know the culture, the best is to live and work in spain, not only reading about siestas, flamenco and bullfights.
I've been living in London the last year and I really miss my food, some weeks ago I was the whole time depressed and homesick and recently I discovered that it was because of the food that I was eating, I missed my food so badly that I started having a depression 😂😂😂
Wtf just calm down, I just said I miss my country and my mums food and that I don't like British plates (which ones every single person that I have met has admitted to me that Spanish food is better, same way Japanese people know how to cook fish or Italian pasta, that does not mean that my country is better than yours in every single way, for example I think that u guys are the best architects, I would like to have buildings like yours. Are u going to kill me because I'm homesick?
Croquetas are made with bechamel sauce...not cheese. The bechamel (pronounced [be.tʃaˈmɛl] or [be.ʃaˈmɛl]) or besciamella (in Italian), besamel, besamela or white sauce is a rather thick sauce whose origin is attributed to French and Italian cuisine. It is made by adding milk to a white roux (a flour sauteed in a fat that, as a general rule, is butter or margarine). This sauce has become popular for its use in the preparation of gratin dishes containing pasta or vegetables, alone or with meat or fish, both in professional and amateur kitchens. Nowadays it is so popular that it can be found packaged (generally in tetrabrick) and ready to be used in the refrigerated area of grocery stores. The recipe for this sauce has not changed substantially over the years, although the number of ingredients that can be incorporated to enrich its flavor has been increasing. The bechamel sauce is a "mother sauce", the base of many other sauces.
Wow I don't know how I end up here. But my family makes the cider that you drank in the videos (Sidra Viuda de Angelón) and we are really happy that you enjoyed it. Hope you come back to visit again.
Saludos
It is isn't it! This was a tour planned for us, didn't really get the chance to catch the names of all of the places like on a lot of the food tours we do. But we always try and give as much info as possible in our vids :)
