Is Speaking in Tongues Necessary for Salvation (Part 2) | Episode 12

Pentecostals believe and teach that speaking in tongues is the initial sign or evidence that a person has received the gift of the Holy Spirit. But does the Bible support this claim? Furthermore, is the baptism of the Holy Spirit a requirement for salvation?
This episode is the continuation of the answer to last week's question. Picking up the story in Acts 10, Dr. David K. Bernard completes his review of what Acts says about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Dr. Bernard explains why everyone who puts their faith in Jesus should expect to receive the Holy Spirit with the accompanying sign of speaking in tongues.
Dr. Bernard covers this subject in greater detail in his book The New Birth, which is available for purchase at PentecostalPublishing.com.

Speaking in Tongues is the outward sign of the infilling of the Holy Ghost, but most Christian denominations reject this because they stand upon John 3:16 as the Salvation plan when it's really Acts 2:38. I am far from perfect, but I thank God for the truth.

If you listened to Bernard, he reiterated the bible principle of two or three witnesses. One witness e.g. 2:38 needs an accompaniment.

But if we want to keep going by the Act 2 standard, then we better expect them to be speaking in tongues that are languages that are active currently. In Acts 2 specifically, they weren't speaking heavenly, unearthly tongues. They were speaking in tongues of other languages. Also, the biggest issue I take with the emphasis on speaking in tongues, is that through the years, many on the platform almost or definitively pressure people to speak in tongues EVERY altar call. They treat it as every service, unless you've spoken in tongues that day, you must be holding back. It's been so harmful to myself and others, causing SO MUCH unnecessary anxiety and pressure.

@@MrMac6375 paul establishes speaking in tongues isn’t always a language that’s been established but calls it a heavenly language in some essences that are unknown to the speaker, 1 cor 12 + 14, now to your second point i agree some churches try to manufacture tongues which is 100 percent wrong. But for those churches teaching the truth upon your confession , repentance and either after baptism in Jesus name of before the Holy Spirit will literally fill you but this again is a responsibility of the believer. We are called to declare the works of the lord with our mouths and what holds a lot of ppl back from speaking in tongues is 1) unbelief in speaking in tongues 2) unwillingness to give the Lord the glory He is due bc it’s not natural to hear yourself declare someone else over you. I’ve been at altar calls and witnesses with people that have and have not received the spirit, in every instance where they did it normally came bc that person was unafraid to give the the Lord the fruit of their lips aka their worship whereas the other ones would hold back and not even fully being to the light what it is that they were struggling with and why they needed a savior(rather they saw that altar call moment as a glorified tylenol pill so they could be comfortable in their sin, imo) hope that offers some insight. God bless you.!

Acts 2:38 is misinterpreted"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR (EIS) the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." The word FOR is the word EIS which means because of, in view of and it doesn't mean "in order to get' or "to get". It like saying take this pill because of(eis/for) your headache (which is the proper interpretation) but wrong interpretation is take this pill in order to get(wrong interpretation of the word for) a headache. Salvation is through the blood bought finished work of Christ. Baptism is for believers.

That is talking about one of the nine gifts of the Spirit (Tongues and interpretation) that can be received after initially receiving the Holy Ghost like they did in Acts 2. Besides I Corinthians is in the Epistles which are letters written to the churches that have already received the Book of Acts 2:38 salvation. If you want to know how to be saved you look to the Book of Acts where the 1st century church began. If you have not been born of the water and Spirit the Bible way the letters to the church (Epistles) are not intended for and/or written to you. We cannot be expected to live a holy life w/o a holy God living inside.

This "pet doctrine" is absurdly unbiblical. One must ignore all the texts saying that the gift of tongues is only given to certain people at certain times, and only to spread the word in a KNOWN tongue. Anything else is speaking mysteries into the air. Better 5 words thatvare understood than 10000 without understanding.

I remember a few years back hearing Dr white and Dr bernard debating on a radio station about this topic. What's interesting, is it always comes back to this simple question, is the evidence of speaking in tongues required to be saved? Then I hear the last thoughts in the video and feel the same at the end of that debate....cheated out of a real answer. Dr bernard should just simplify it by admitting he does not believe someone to have the holy spirit unless they spoke in tongues. You cannot be saved unless you have received the holy spirit. Therefore you do not believe someone is saved unless they speak in tongues. Pretty simple.
@pastorenocramirez
@pastorenocramirez 2 года назад
I believe Dr. Bernard was very clear on his answer. We follow the model and pattern set before us in the scriptures as to those what received the Holy Ghost via the evidence of speaking other tongues. The miracle of speaking in tongues is the initial sign of the infilling however this must be followed by the ninefold fruit of the spirit. The salvation of a person is not dependant on the speaking of tongues but in the belief in Jesus Christ and living a life which produces the gifts of the spirit. Ultimately can God save a person who never spoke in tongues but bore great fruit before God? I think the answe is an absolute yes for God has mercy upon whom He will have mercy but as Dr. Bernard says if we have not yet experienced the infilling of His spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues then lets keep praying and seeking and He will answer.

@@pastorenocramirez I would love to hear David Bernard say that. He is the theologian giving us our dogma to live by within the UPCI. He did not say "You can be saved without speaking tongues". He also did not say "You must speak in tongues to be saved". So, no he did not give a clear answer. A clear answer would state a yes or no answer to the question. There is no ambiguity in the question, so a simple yes or no would suffice.

Just think. Someone’s life is threatened and they need surgery to survive. So obviously they cut into the body to do the surgery. The surgery gets done and they live. Surgery leaves evidence that we call scars. It’s not those scars that saved this person it’s the surgery that was performed that saved this person. If you don’t have those scars you obviously didn’t have the surgery done.🤔

There is more evidence that speaking in tongues is the initial sign of receiving the Holy Spirit than it is not required. My personal experience supports that speaking in tongues is the intial sign of the receipt of the Holy Spirit. It is however, the least of the gifts of The Holy Spirit. Jeremiah 29:11-13... "And when you seek Me with all of your heart, I will be found by you declares The Lord " The most important thing is to seek God with all of your heart.

Just a point on water baptism. Peter commanded them to be baptised. The Angel had said to Cornelius back in early part of ch 10, that ' he (Peter) will tell you what you MUST do. Water baptism was a command. And they did NOT need to do a prebaptism study of what it all meant. Simple childlike faith and obedience to God's command secured their salvation.

What concerns me with the defense used to defend the evidence of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues, is that it uses the same defense that those who believe in the trinity and the rapture use. It is the defense that the concept is in scripture, but scripture nowhere plainly teaches, commands, or includes it in the path of salvation. The accounts of tongues being spoken after receiving the Holy Ghost were largely for a sign to an unbeliever of some sort. Day of Pentecost/unbelieving Jews Cornelieus/believing Jews at the time did not believe salvation was open to the Gentiles Rebaptism/ sign to those then and to us today, that the belief and baptism is to be in Jesus Christ Peter had the chance to include tongues in the process in Acts 2:38. He instead, says you will receive the Holy Ghost after repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. There were no further instructions or stipulations included. I am a full believer in exactly what Acts 2:38 says. As others, I myself am just in search of God's truth and not man's. How can we create doctrine out of something that is not plainly stated in the bible. These are just some of the questions that come to mind in discussion of this topic.

To answer your question in short, I will ask you, are you saved? Now answer me this…when people were baptized according to John’s baptism, I.e. baptism of repentance such as Apollos (what way did Priscilla and Aquila show him more perfectly?) and the disciples of John….were they not saved already by simple repentance? Why was it necessary to show them the way more perfectly? According to your interpretation of scripture they would have already been filled with the Holy Ghost once they repented, correct? So what was it that Apollos was being instructed in? These are just some questions I have. I am pretty logical, and I have faith…but I don’t feel scripture shows that all of a sudden you have the Holy Ghost by just believing/ repenting. Please help me understand your position. Thanks

It was at the 6:24 min mark that he jumped the gun and made a claim that was not substantiated in my opinion. I was tracking with him all the way to that point, but I just don't see how those examples given (just fyi not the only scriptures that teach on tongues, there are still many more to examine right alog side with those) necessarily teach that the gift of tongues (only ONE of the MANY gifts of The Holy Spirit) is THE only initial and necessary gift of the holy spirit. I think he is prematurely jumping to a conclusion that is not necessarily correct.

Great teaching pastor! Just as a side point, I have heard many say that because the Word doesn't say that Cornelius and his guests were water baptized then it isn't necessary first in order to recieve the Holy Spirit. I believe that the Word confirms that the gentiles were water baptized before Peter's arrival and that by John the Baptist. In Peters' rooftop vision of the sheet with the unclean animals God tells Peter, " What God hath cleansed call not thou uncommon"( Acts 10:15) 1) " hath" is in the past tense. 2) Peter upon entering Cornelius' house didn't have to explain who John the baptist was, they knew. 3) Is was only a days journey from Cornelius' house to where John was baptizing 4) God's words to Peter during the rooftop vision were not only speaking of Gods' decision to bring the gentiles into the body of Christ but was also speaking of Cornelius and guests whose messengers were approaching Peters' house.

If tongues is the evidence of the Holy Spirit to oneself. Why does Paul say to pray for interpretation, or for that individual to pray to himself?? in all three events in acts, someone understood the message whatever the language was! in 1 corinthians 14: ,,, Paul puts order in the church because you don’t want newcomers to think they’re all mad. Either all had the gift or some were fakers! Someone show me a verse where private prayer language is in the Bible? (Matt6:7 ,,, when you pray on you’re own do not repeat, like pagans) Or where someone prayed in an unknown tongue for someone? Benard said that Acts is still playing out which I believe! For in the book of Acts is the only one that doesn’t have amen at the end! Kenneth Copeland, modern tongue speakers rolling on the ground are pagan actors! And if ecstatic, utterance, incoherent, glossolalia is the true evidence. …what do you compare it with? When again in Acts it was understood they heard them prophesy in other languages and express the greatness of God!

Question: what does the Bible say about self defense? If I or my loved one was being attacked or being threatened, am I able to defend myself or them?
@derekbaker777
@derekbaker777 2 года назад
Yes, one is allowed to defend themselves and their family. If a person is about to either shoot or hurt you, God doesn't expect a person to just stand there and take something that could potentially end your life or severely hurt you. At the same time, I also believe that if a person has the Holy Ghost, God will protect that individual and not allow them to be put in that situation to begin with. Remember that God is omniscient and knows everything before it even happens, so the Lord I believe will open up and close doors depending on the situation. The Bible does say however that "The rain falls on the just and unjust alike," but I'd rather live life with the Holy Ghost opposed to without it because many blessings come from having the Spirit of Christ including eternal life in heaven as the end result. This world and our physical bodies are temporal, and won't last forever. Receiving the Holy Ghost and maintaining one's relationship with Christ is the most important thing of all. The Lord will take care of the rest. Acts 2:38.

chapter 8 of Acts, its true it does not say in that passage that the person that received the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues, but if you read the chapter, we can see that they received the Holy Ghost in that instant, meaning your definition of a sign of receiving the Holy Ghost can also be wrong since you say the sign is a transformed life which is not wrong but not right. FIRST we have to make sure the difference of the POURING of the Holy Ghost and The Holy Ghost LIVING in You. If you understand the difference then you will understand why tongues is essential. Having the Holy Ghost in your life will show according to your transformation like you said, but when we talk about speaking in tongues we mean A pouring of the holy ghost in that exact moment in your life, which is shown by speaking in tongues, like you said yes you can be saved without speaking in tongues because lets say i speaking in tongues today and tmr i don’t but jesus comes, will i be considered saved if i didn’t speak in tongues today? No that’s not how it works Speaking in tongues is evidence the Holy Ghost is working in you and your getting MORE FILLED OR FILLED BY HIM, then we have to live in the spirit which is true salvation, God bless🙏

Furthermore 1 corinthians 12:3 no one in the spirit says Jesus is a curse but no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the spirit! So I pray with my mind, and I pray with my spirit. 1:Corinth 14:15. God wants you to have his understanding. Azusa street revival gave tongues a bad name!

Speaking in tongues is not necessary in order to spend eternity with God, in His Heavenly Kingdom. Fact is, not even water baptism is necessary. Religion (mankind's way of getting to God), makes us think it's necessary. And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” Christ said this to the thief to His right (whom neither spoke in tongues or was baptized) as both of them hung dying on the Cross. And in the case of Christ, dying once, for ALL (past current future) sins.

The thief on the cross was under the old covenant where baptism and speaking in tongues wasn't necessary to be saved The new covenant began in Acts ch.2.

Speaking in tongues is speaking scripture. On the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2, the Lord’s disciples received the gift of speaking in tongues and the ability to rightly divide the word of truth. The meaning of (cloven) is divided. The meaning of (tongues of fire) is the word of God The meaning of the (spirit) is the word of God. This gift of speaking in tongues by the Holy Ghost is the ability to speak scripture lines which the Lord declared when he pronounced all of the book of the Lord with his lips from the beginning in the pure language made of pure words. This language is known as Jew’s language; and the Lord’s disciples on the day of Pentecost received the ability to not only speak the word of God, they also received the gift to rightly divide the word of God. They received understanding of all the mate lines of the Lord to give the interpretation of other lines which are in question. Whenever those with this gift spake a scripture line and their understanding of the scripture line is heard by another and this other person had no understanding, this line of scripture is known as an unknown tongue. Now these men who came to Jerusalem to worship heard these men with the gift of tongues and they marveled because the men who spake the Jews language were unlearned Galilaeans from the northern Israel. (note, when people are filled with the Holy Ghost, they speak the word of God with boldness.): Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

This is far fetched interpretation sir. I believe there's an actual utterances of tounges. Jesus said it this way, Mark 16:17 [17]And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Acts 10:44-45 [44]While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. [45]And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. When we are filled with the Holy Ghost, we are filled with POWER! (Acts 1:8) The end result is speaking the word of God boldly. But speaking in tounges and speaking the word is not the same accdg to scriptures.

Notice from Acts 10:44-45, there's a clear difference between Peter speaking the Word, (it doesn't say Peter was speaking in tounges), and the holy Ghost fell on them that were hearing the word. How did the apostle know? Because the people were speaking in tounges, like they had experienced in Acts 2.

First let me say this the Holy Spirit was here in Genesis so it could not be the initial evidence of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist was born with the Holy Spirit and that was before Christ baptism. I grew up apostolic and I found that the teaching was a little left. When they began to speak in other tongues as a spirit gave them a utterance it told us that they spoke in another language that could be translated. When they went out to make disciples the spirit fell and they began to speak in another language. They said how is it that you are of the Galilean we understand what you were saying because they were speaking their language and they said but you don’t understand what you were saying. Those who underStood Hebrew Russian Chinese Spanish could interpret it because the spirit spoke through them to be able to tell about God’s word. The scripture gives no account of anyone but the apostles speaking in tongues. Scripture says not all will have the gift of tongues but I rather that you prophesy so it is a fallacy to believe that everyone will speak in tongues when the Bible says differently. That is the problem with religion the Bible gives no validity for any of them apostolic Pentecostal Baptist Catholic none of them! And Man will have to answer to God for the things that he did not validate.

120 in the upper room spoke in tongues (Acts 2), all in Cornelius’ house (Acts 10), the followers of John the baptist (Acts 19). Feel free to actually watch the video and read your Bible. God bless 🙏🏽
