i find the concept not different from 3d animation in Sprite animation, when u have the sprites, u can animate easily same with 3d, when u have the models done, u can animate easily in parallel, they work the same way it only differes in terms of creating FX sometimes, since most people in 3d animation create those from scratch while it rarely happens with sprite animation, tho most people create their fx for sprite animation too in case it's neccessary.

I find it funny when people complain about sprite animators "stealing" game sprites but don't hesitate to pirate Adobe products or music

Are board games REALLY games if you're not having fun? Jokes aside, I think Sprite Animation is still Animation, just maybe different from the usual standard of animation, if that makes sense. You're still doing the standard procedures of making an animation and learning the fundamentals of everything, so I say they're still Animation.
