the real hero here is dan who took the 50 mins i spent talking about my complex thoughts on this game and smooshed it into 23 min the other real hero is you for watching and sharing your thoughts whether we agreed or not
I love Starfield! I think the reason why people are so down on it, is the same reason they were on cyberpunk. They were expecting something different and had super high expectations. It’s no BG3 on the rpg side of things, but it’s still fantastic!
Since you bring up the arsenal, how do you feel about the mag weapons being just so op compared to everything else? I enjoy my RPGs on higher difficulty (especially now with the xp boost), and so I end up not using some of my highly customized for fun guns in favor of just max dps mag weapons. Jess wondering
Someone might have pointed this out already, but you can actually CHANGE the classic Bethesda Dialogue Camera in the Settings. When you turn it off, there is no awkward zoom into their face, and if you are in 3rd Person View, the dialogue remains in 3rd Person View.
I didn't buy Starfield when it first came out as I like to buy ultimate or collector's editions of games but when they were asking $170AUD for a 'digital' copy I was like yeah F that, that's ridiculous pricing. When I picked it up, almost a month ago for $100 I wasn't expecting it to be anything special till I actually started playing it and I'm hooked. It's renewed my passion for exploring and just finding out what stories unfold from so many within the Starfield Universe that's made this game a pure joy to engage in and get captivated by just how much effort went into the game. The voice acting is great, with a massive array of cast, they really improved on their story telling, that's for certain. Graphically pleasing but still needs work, paces really well and there's so much to do, so many systems integrated nicely so far, is it perfect? no not yet but then what Bethesda game has ever been! I'm just quest hunting and slowly getting up my skill points, so I can see what more this game has to offer and so far, I have been thoroughly enjoying the game and only hope they continue to make it better as the years move on.
Game is friggin awesome. Iove it so much. 270 hours. Hit level 100 tonight. I cannot stop exploring the galaxy, and with the way new game plus works i can just keep it going. Love the game. Love the missions. Love the characters. Love the world. I've never had so many people desperate to make my dislike a thing. Its so funny how people just INSIST that it can't just not be a game for them IT MUST BE AWFUL
Mass Effect Andromeda was the exact same story. It wasn't the best game in the series, but the ending wasn't as terrible as Mass Effect 3, which was itself also an incredible game overall. The concept was so interesting that I was hoping for more DLC and/or a sequel to tell the rest of the story.
The irony of Starfield is that it’s MY Bethesda RPG of choice. I have loved it from day one even with its numerous problems. Since it’s many updates, especially the Creation Club mods, I’ve been obsessed! I’ve spent as many hours in the game as you have, role playing as numerous characters. As of late I’ve become obsessed with ship building thanks to numerous mods. Ive even entered ship design contests online. Starfield is the mid as hell 6 I love like a 10. I can totally understand why others don’t dig it but Im all about it. I haven’t finished Shattered Space yet but Im still intrigued by it. What I really want is a Trackers Alliance focused expansion with dozens & dozens of bounty quests. What they have set up with the 2 missions (one free one paid, which I don’t like) we have so far.
Yep by far my favourite RPG, from any studio. Anything with swords makes me vomit in my mouth. Starfields world is so fresh and if you’re a fan of NASA, Soace X and space exploration it’s such a wonderful game
THANK YOU! So many people love this game and it's incredibly refreshing to see a youtuber prepared to stick their head up and say they love it too. Sometimes it genuinely feels like people just want to spoil other people's fun.
Finally beat the main story after 100+ hours and went right into NG+. Absolutely loving it a year later. If you're a fan of something like The Expanse, this game is perfect
"AlL thE WoRLd's RElIgioNS ArE RIghT" has to be one of the lamest endings to a video game ever, in my opinion. Sarah makes sense, i guess, to be at the end but the other guy is hardly in the game and absolutely doesn't belong there. I honestly didn't even know who he was and had to google it, since I hadn't seen him since the first few hours of the game. The story is garbage. Far from perfect man, sorry.
Ty for this. With all the hate on the game I had almost been convinced to never go back. But you reminded me why I spent hundreds of hours in Star field and now I'm looking forward to going back.
I’m so glad she has started to get confident with this format. It’s hilarious and speaks to her personality so much and feels more authentic. I’m a big fan of Jess Sayin’!
Man, it's such a strange game. I enjoyed 40-50 hours, but now I just can't. This is such an enigma of a game, peppered lightly with really cool moments, quests and more, just not concentrated enough with too many barren, boring worlds not offering enough. It's so mid with real good energy in enough places to be worth it for many people. And yet, the thrill is just gone So I'll be passing on shattered space until it's discounted a fair deal. Love Jess Sayin', this is a fun addition to the WC roster!
I think one thing that often gets missed with this game (and similar games) is that it's a space game. All space games have big pauses and areas of empty. Come back in a couple of years and give it another try. In just one year, it's a MUCH better game than when you likely tried it.
No, its not, & anyone who thinks otherwise either just started playing & haven't played many open world games or rpgs, bot accounts created by Bethesda, or just trolls. & whatculture needs to stop contradicting itself
I've now been playing Starfield for 125ish hours, and I largely agree with you. There are things in the game that disappoint me that were obvious things that needed work in earlier games, like inventory management and being able to track individual resources when researching. The constellation hook also wasn't very strong for me to the point where an entire game mechanic being unlocked like...80+ hours in was a pretty big surprise. Still, I enjoy the characters and some of the storylines are really enjoyable. As per usual, mods will make the game what I wanted it to be. Also the clothing choices are just awful.
@@UmmerFarooq-wx4yo Yeah, I know they were inspired by 80s sci fi. It's just not my aesthetic in the slightest. I love the look of the ships and spacesuits and what not. I just want different fashion choices for regular clothes in game. I guess that's what mods are for.
It's 1/3rd the time as Cyberpunk's renaissance took. Give them time, they're still improving freaking 76 after all, and it was in WAY worse shape at release and they're still updating it six years later.
@@TeronRedoran I understand, however with the fanbase's shrinking over time I'm afraid they may have missed their mark, the next update has to probably be something worth reinvesting in, the hype with Cyberpunk was way higher than Space Warehouse LOL
@@TeronRedoran The Cyberpunk story and lore were super solid at launch. I just can't see that level of immersion for Starfield. Shattered Space was a big chance to do something dramatic with the story. It's all still a little flat for me. It's also really tough if the developer is happy with what they built.
I keep trying to push myself through this title and this is probably the first video I have watched about Starfield that properly touches on some of the nuggets within that do work for what it's trying to do, but it's so difficult to properly explain or display for the average person to get it. The "It's Skyrim in space" definite is a negative for me, but I am still REALLY trying to work with it. After they introduced the expanded gameplay options, it has helped a lot. Stealth builds are also now viable and I can introduce some real danger by pushing both player and enemy damage all the way up instead of being punished like in previous survival modes in past games. Very much a game saver for me because if it remained the same as launch, I don't think I would be keeping with it. There are certainly a lot of verticles in Starfield that you can enjoy and live your own fantasy... but you do have to accept some of the repetitiveness to it.
One of my greatest failings as a gamer, was to have never beaten Skyrim, despite having it on day 1. I say “greatest” failing as I don’t like to start a game and never finish it, assuming I truly enjoy the game, which I did love Skyrim. Life….. Hell, I don’t even remember specifics at this point, but I even had 3 years in between then and when my first kid was born, so I’ve got little to no excuse. I had something like 80 hours into my first playthrough before I think my 360 HDD died and the data couldn’t be recovered. I have a very hard time justifying throwing those hours away as that’s 2-4 typical other games I could start and finish within that time. I just started Cyberpunk 2077 only a few months back, in between playing other titles that I can play around the kids, which is the bulk of time I have to play a game). I only finished Fallout 4 about a year ago (again, having it from day 1). Just a continuation of the backlog/shame growth, really. Now, Starfield…..I’ve wanted to play it since its launch, but like this short story has eluded to, I’ve no idea when that will actually take place. For various reasons, I’ve never even played Witcher III, so while trying to stay organized with this backlog of mine…I have a file that shows console, game, and “weight” so I can help focus on which game to play next. No idea when Starfield will come around.
I enjoy playing the game and working towards level 100 but I understand most of the grievances. One grievance I have (which may seem pretty small to some) is that in the time of Starfield, the entire literary world seems to be made up of just 15 books in total. With Skyrim, there must have been over a hundred and the multiple volumes allowed you to read a lot of lore. Also, not be able to physically land/take off from a planet (or even fly around in it) without a loading screen kills immersion. No Man's Sky had the foresight to do this and it makes all the difference.
My issue with Starfield at launch was the lack of choices. Nothing the player does really changes the story. We are not allowed to choose sides. We can be a nice good guy or a rude good guy. The expansion is just more of the same.
I have been avoiding Starfield since it released but you are probably the only person who could change my mind. You come at things in a very relatable way and your effortless charm could win me over to anything.
I have the game and DLC. I got it free with my RX 6750 XT which I bought last year. I still can’t muster the energy to play more than 30 minutes at a time. It’s as if the game world and mechanics are trying to make me fall asleep.
Starfield is just like space: There is nothing there. It's not impenetrable, it's just shallow. Great if you're enjoying it, but putting it on the same level as Skyrim or Oblivion is bad judgment.
I agree with most of this and there’s so much to love about Starfield. But sadly the…….. … … … … …loading screens just take you out of the game loop so much and it unravels the experience.
I'm not going to speak for Starfield, but having picked Skyrim and Fallout 4 back up this year after not playing them since their launch versions, they actually turned into good and polished games sometime during the DLCs and various quiet patches and fixes in that decade I never touched them. They really weren't that at launch. Unmodded Fallout 4 started breaking down on me to the point that I couldn't walk somewhere without cars and deathclaws literally raining from the sky 5min out of Vault 111. I doubt they got their butts in gear with Starfield like 1 year in, but I think another year or two and/or a 2nd DLC, and it probably will be a pretty good game. Probably better to ask somewhere with actual players of the game than any video from clickbait sites or the comments therein. I imagine most people dunking on it have, at most, watched someone on youtube play it which makes them an expert on the matter. Edit: I will say, having asked in a jaded place I expect to get a good barometer from, they were actually unexpected positive on the game as well. So who knows, maybe random reviews from nonplayers and youtubers aren't the best measure compared to picking it up on sale.
As someone who loves the game I feel like she is the only one actually giving it a chance. Everyone is allowed their opinion but it's nice to see someone not on the hate hype train trying for views.
Why do I feel like people are trying to convince me that Starfield is bad? Because they are. That’s the internet, everything is bad because we say so. Just play what you like, we like Starfield. So what.
I’ve long preferred the leveling in Skyrim over SPECIAL of Fallout and just wanted a Fallout that had Elder Scrolls lvling system (I know it’ll never happen). So if Starfield is a sci-fi Skyrim I’ll have to try it out eventually
This is great content and it's so nice to hear some positivity over Starfield. The ironic thing is I'd only recently started watching What Culture because of their positivity over Starfield. In these times of endless negativity over everything, particularly on RU-vid, it's incredibly important to find the outlets that like the same things you do, that are in-tune with what you think is important. The more recent negative reaction to Shattered Space made me worry that this was going to another channel that produced content that I wasn't interested in. This has restored my faith.
I can’t even say I LOVED Starfield like I LOVED Mass Effect, or Red Dead, etc… but somehow, I have spent more hours in Starfield than I ever have in any one game; I got almost 200 hours in. It just it’s hooks in me for sure.🤣👍🏽
I have to admit it, I really like Starfield. I like RPGs in general and I think the Bethesda ones are some of the best in the industry. But Starfield still has the besthesda jankyness going; A few days ago, I got stuck behind a bit of ice after going up some stairs and had to "TCL" my way out of it. Could starfield be improved, Yes! Could Starfield be made better by some small and big things, Yes! but people really like it and will play it because of the jank, because of it being not being merely "skyrim in space" but because its "skyrim in space"!! also Jess, don't get too downbeat at being 136hours in to Starfield, I've got 535hrs on the clock and about 10% is jus messing with the ship editor 😅 Plus if it makes you feel any better, I'd put a bucket on you head and take your cred sticks, purely out of love for the game 😘
It's a good sandbox in my opinion. My main issue with the game is the lack of interesting side quests. Questing in the major cities is just awful. Whoever thought that bringing a plate to an oldman was fun , need to lay down on grass and think about it twice
The skill trees in Starfield are not complex, they are simpler than Fallout 4. You just get so little XP it takes an eternity to unlock things, thats not complexity, thats a time sink
They have more mechanical depth attached to them. Fallout 4's skills only offered you new functionality here and there. Starfield's have it in every skill tree.
Depends on how you play and what you do. Best XP by far is by exploration, killing aliens, scanning planets, etc. You can also get a lot by setting up an outpost and crafting stuff with resources IF you have a good setup, but that's a late game thing. Clearing bases is decent too if you push yourself into higher level areas. Doing random quests though depends on the quest, and most non-major quests aren't the best for experience. But seriously, get the planet scanning perks, go into a new system, and you get 10-50% of a level without leaving your ship. Go into a pack of aliens and mow them down, that's about a 10-20%. Build an outpost and it depends on the setup, but that can lead to the fastest xp.
@@StoneAgeWarfare not true, Fallout 4 had the SPECIAL stats over all of them so you at least had to build either a strong or charismatic character for example, the perks are both just unlocks and damage buffs but Fallout 4 at least had stats over the top of them
@@TonyTynebridge Starfield unlocks entire systems like crafting tiers, jetpack modifications, prototype ship components, and outpost supply chains if you invest in their skills. It doesn't have SPECIAL, but it folds a lot of skills like Manipulation or Persuasion into the skill checks and persuasion minigame as a substitute for the Charisma stat. Overall, Starfield's' perks unlock more of the game, especially if you take the time to max the, out.
Jess, genuine question: how can you have a cat and a shelf full of goodies with enticing lights on them? This is not possible, you can only have one or the other, not both!!
This is why the gaming industry is cooked I'm tired of paying full price for a game and getting some of a game imagine going into a restaurant ordering surf and turf paying full price for it and they just bring you out shrimp and then they tell you that you got to pay for the rest of the meal separately That's what the Triple-A companies constantly do to fans
Skill tree in Starfield? Complex? I guess you have many options but it's pretty straight forward and a bit bland it's like a meaningful update and also not. It's great that with time you can find your fun power to you
Games just need to be good out of the box, plain and simple. If it takes 20+ min videos from huge media outlets to try to convince people that we need to give a game a chance, then it's not a good game.
I was hooked from the start and still play and love the game. So imo it's worth playing of course. That being said, the game is definitely more of a slow burn. Also I did feel a bit overwhelmed for the first 10 hours or so. There are just so many mechanics and so many different things to do. So I opted to go for quests and missions at first and only started to branch out after having played for 30 to 40 hours or so.
I’m on my second play through right now. I never finished my first because I got bored with it. But now I’m avoiding the activities. I didn’t really like. The only thing I don’t like about this game is that the POIs are all the same. you go to a science post, then everything is the same enemies in the same place , all the assets even computer entries are exactly the same. And I felt like that cheapened everything else as much as I liked everything else. But now I just know if I don’t need to hit a POI I won’t. But I am enjoying it now. First mod I see that randomizes the POI situation I am on it.
Jane Douglas in a OxBoxTra video put it the best by saying that she was wanting a galaxy like in Star Trek and got a galaxy created by the likes of Elon Musk and Jeff Bazos which is very boring
I've been playing Starfield since day 1 of release as well as the DLC. I'm disappointed in the shallow story and dialogue. "Lore" is a set of Dickens books because it's in public domain. If it weren't for mods, I'd have probably stopped playing after a month.
Funny, I just came from Gameranx's rant on StarField. I'd share my main complaint about StarField. At least I didn't have to defend StarField here. 😅 My main complaint is the storytelling aspect has worsen because the main storyline forces the player to be good. Evil/renegade actions are actively discouraged by companions. VASCO isn't a great conversationalist. Second is BGS not acknowledging some of the issues with the game, at least based on optics. Shattered Space is an improvement, so I hope BGS improves it further. I will get back to Varuunkai after I beat Diablo IV Vessel of Hatred.
@@UmmerFarooq-wx4yo Wait, sharing I like the game on a video that liked the game with some critique is cowardice? Am I being too subtle here? Also the no murder run isn't my style. I like run and gun.
Well it’s good to hear that you’re fairing better than Mortal Kombat 1 users on the Switch. I’m pretty fuming there’s no excuse for how bad it looks and runs a full year in. I play this thing daily and there are games from 11 years ago that embarrass it on the very same platform such as WarFrame, Apex Legends (especially) and all of the Bethesda shooters. I think the future of the unreal engine is the exact same fate as Micromedia flash. I know when I’m being scammed. Great Stuff, as always!
Fun combat, illusion of exploration, dead-end packed skill tree demanding throw-away skill points, game-breaking bugs. I'm not even mad at the game anymore. It's harmless, some people like it, that's my last word.
Starfield is my favorite game ever! i get hated on so much but i dont care thats my opinion i love space and everything about it! STARFIELD IS INCREDIBLE!
I've been playing Creation Engine games since Morrowind and every single one of them has followed a pattern. On Release: This game is SO buggy and they changed a bunch of stuff and this is their worst game yet. Three Years Later: This is finally a good game. Ten Years Later: This game is a CLASSIC and one of the best RPGs of all time. The funny thing is that the games don't change that much -- Bethesda just fixes the worst of the complaints and the rest of the brilliance shines through. We've already seen that with Starfield -- the new minimaps and the new vehicle have essentially fixed the tedium aspect of exploration and surveys. If they update outposts and the survival mechanics, they'll take care of a bunch of other complaints. Hell, Survival Mode didn't hit Fallout 4 until well after launch as part of a free update and it's now one of the most popular ways to play. Also, EVERY BGS game is janky in some ways. Morrowind had RNG combat and a crazy skill system. Oblivion had those tedious Oblivion Gates. Skyrim had problems with NPCs dying and wonky impact physics. Fallout 3 had boring companions and sluggish gunplay that sometimes required VATS. Fallout 4 had an obnoxious radiant quest system and their foolish "always four options" dialog system. Starfield has a barely functional outpost system. I also find it funny that people say the Constellation quest doesn't sell you on the game. This was a deliberate response to people complaining about Fallout 4's main quest. You were supposed to be tracking down your CHILD, but you were free to wander off and spend hours building settlements or helping the Brotherhood be a better occupying force or helping Travis get his groove back. The artifact hunt doesn't have a deadline and can be ignored in Starfield. That's what some people WANTED, but the problem is that the "main quest" is ignorable and that's seen as indicative of the quality of the game. The Faction quests are actually better because most of them have stakes besides, "I want to be space Jesus." The terrormorph quest is the UC Vanguard faction quest line and it is extremely well done. That first terrormorph encounter takes a ton of inspiration from horror cinema, with Aliens being the most obvious.
I think for me the world's never felt like real places. I enjoyed alot of the side quests but never the main one. I really enjoyed the space combat and managing all the systems but apart from a few of the side quests I don't feel like there was any challenges there. I loved Elderscrolls skyrim but this felt like a more empty version of that in space with less charm. I still enjoyed my time with it but the game somehow feels like its older than skyrim and feels like a xbox 360 game rather than a xbox series x game.
8:00 wtf is a "100 hour" rpg???? Thats how much time it should take you to figure out whether or not you want to sink thousands of hours in it! People need to stop getting games, RUSHING through the main story. Then getting bored because they wont stray from the main stuff and explore, then complain about the game before moving on and doing the same thing to next game they pick up. Rpg open world games are meant to play for a looooong time. If you want something you can pick up and mindlessly play for a little bit here and there, with minimal learning of mechanics, go play a battle royale, or call of duty or something. Stop going into games like Bethesdas games, playing them like theyre call of duty, then giving them negative reviews because YOUR expectations were wrong. People say theres no wrong way to play a video game but that's just not true. You don't play Forza then complain because theres no weapons.
I played for a hundred hours or so and enjoyed it but it never felt like a game I wanted to just hang around in doing tasks on random worlds When it bugged out, leaving me unable to progress, I the game stopped. I do struggle to understand how so many years of development went into a game that I rate as a 6/10 and it is overpriced, in my opinion. Still, I did like hearing a positive video about t instead of the more common 'my life is ruined because Starfield wasn't great' ones. Have fun!
Lots of promise, flashes of brilliance, lazy implementation trying to make the game seem endless. It's an addictive first play through but once you uncover the secrets it's impossible to have the same kind of enjoyment. The bugs were a big, (and good) reason to be frustrated. If the bugs hadn't led to a myriad of ways to break, leaving a saved game impossible to use to finish the game, reception wouldn't have turned sour overnight.
This is a stretch. With games like Warframe out there that actually aren't actively pissing in their customers faces..... I wouldn't go back to any Bethesda product.
About 40ish hours in, I found the first "Space Magic Shrine" or whatever, and couldn't complete the puzzle to advance because at no point did the game ever telegraph that a jetpack would be needed. I considered going and figuring out how to grind to get a single point so I could maybe do the puzzle, but after all the other disappointing elements of the game I decided to uninstall it. It's the most disappointed I've been in a game since Paper Mario Sticker Star. You'd think after buying a 3DS for Sticker Star that I'd know better than to buy a Series X for Starfield. Hurts extra because I traded in a lot of stuff for the Series X.
You don't need a jetpack. At all. I've done the main quest fully without. If it looked like you did, maybe the anti-gravity wasn't on due to a bug, but you don't need a jetpack at any point of the game.
The biggest downfall off Bethesda games has always and forever will be the creation engine. Until it gets a quantum injection of R&D, it will be the handicapp that hampers getting games to the current generation of player tastes. The systems are there, the stories are there, the ideas and dreams are there, but the engine from a Ford Pinto will never be enough to push it over the next hill.
Great job. I'm loving the game and I'm still in the early stages. Just overwhelmed! I'm a little confused with the ship building, but I think it's because I haven't progressed enough.
Starfield has excellent bones, could have been a game of the decade. Bethesda just didn’t do anything interesting with it. Video game equivalent of the genius kid in school that refuses to do any actual work and barely passes the grade.
It feels like all these Bethesda releases including and since Skyrim need 2 expansions, THEN they're good. Until then, they're pretty mid. It's like it just takes a few years of tweaking and maybe feedback before they kind of get it "right" and retroactively inject some of that into the original content as well. Like I actually picked up Skyrim and Fallout 4 this year having only played their launch versions, both are actually good games. They really weren't that great at launch. So I guess I'm waiting on Starfield to get a 2nd expansion?
