Is Steve Perry Hard To Work With?

The answer is in this video Plus my continuing analysis of the GQ interview and some insights that I've gleaned from folks that are close to Perry. Perry is not one of those guys that settles for good enough he really strives for perfection.

So what if he was difficult. The mans music is perfection. He knew what he wanted and he got it.
@ts31966
@ts31966 3 года назад
You nailed that!!! In the end it is about what people want. Everyone wants to be a mega famous rock star. Surrounded by beautiful women, with so much money in your bank that it makes your head spin. Also a continuous flow of new money that never ends. To accomplish that takes hard work, focus, dedication, practice, planning and song writing. A person that wants those things will be hard to work with. But nobody is forcing anyone to do something they do not want.

He may be difficult because of his perfectionism and high standards but I don't think he is rude or mean or or nasty. He knows what he wants his music to sound like and just wants to make sure that is how it turns out.

I know since the comments has been turned off I'm rather late to the game in hearing this write-up on Steve Perry, but knowing what I know now (May, 2019) I can say how rare of a person he must be. Real.

Steve has always said and admitted to that he's a perfectionist and his own worst critic. In addition he will state that he often stuck his nose in places (no pun intended) where it made some uncomfortable and also fought for the music and the performances. To his credit, everything he's done on his own and per Journey worked. He's also admitted to making mistakes, giving himself time to suck and so forth. You have to realize Steve was more than a Singer/Songwriter: Steve started out engineering in sound studios while he was playing in clubs and bands. Even when Steve joined Journey he was the one who would get up the sound boards and work some of the Journey shows behind the sound equipment and then go and change and jump on stage. Steve was a musician: Played Drums/Did Vocals/Played some Bass and took his craft very seriously. Now, Schon and others said Steve is a funny guy a great guy but Steve was all about the music. Steve would state that there were 5 musicians who were incredible per their own right who bought the best out of one another despite any frictions and best of times between members. Look, Steve did it all and I think the same could be said of Steven Tyler who was very similar and known to be a Task Master amid Aerosmith: Musicians that had incredible vocal/showmanship abilities and so they demanded a lot from themselves and their bandmates in getting the best music out there. It's paid off, I just read today that Journey's Greatest Hits is only one of 5 recordings still in the Billboard Top 300 since it's release and about 4 years ago it went from 77th to 44th so I'm sure it's still hanging in that number as generations of fans continue to find Journey's music in every Karaoke bar, every sports stadium, on the radio, per the internet and so on. DSB still the number one downloaded tune on I-Tunes. So, was Steve difficult or just trying to create music with Journey and per himself that would remain TIMELESS?

Steve perry is a person who holds a high standard for his music. He is no different than John Mellencamp or Ritchie blackmore. Both of those artists have been called hard to work with and in the case of blackmore other artists say they would never work with him again. How about neil young? He's a guy that might have been difficult to work with as in csny but he has standards and knows what he wants. Perfectionist, particular, proffesional call it what you want. Isn't it just artistic integrity?

There is an older interview with Herbie Herbert (I found it on Google) and in it he when into some detail about what a jerk off Steve was. Especially when it came to touring. He also talked about when they made Trial by Fire that he was never going to tour (supposedly before his hip injury). Bottom line, Steve wasn’t a nice person, and the other guys had finally had enough

Don't know if you take suggestions? How about a story or two on John Fogerty? I know he's not controversial but in my opinion one of the greatest song writers, guitar players of all time. Not to mention his amazing comeback album Center field saw him play every instrument on the album. With the exception of the song Change in the weather we can ignore the follow-up album Eye of Zombie.
@MillerGenuineDraft1980
@MillerGenuineDraft1980 6 лет назад
John Fogerty good call, actually there is a long fucking list Dave could do. Of actual real diverse and more interesting songwriters than Steve Perry. Aside from Perry having a better voice Dave might as well be doing Michael Bolton videos. Both are Ballad Style Crooner Singers. Not Rock Singers Wheel In The Sky and a couple others were Rock Songs and yet not sung by a Rock Singer. Fuck Dave do a Daryl Hall video (one of the greatest Soul Singers of all time).

@jyesucevitz
@jyesucevitz 6 лет назад
Sherry B I'm more interested in his solo career. And no offense to you but I know I'm tired of political correctness anyway. But John Fogerty solo career in opinion shines brighter than his work albeit short with CCR. I still get chills when I see the old music video for Old Man Down Road. The video following the cord of his guitar and and finally ends with a shot of John playing his guitar. Centerfield was such an iconic comeback album. He addmiatdly rushed out his second release Eye of Zombie which you almost never hear him play anything from it live. When I saw him during his Blue Moon Swampb tour in Boston back in the 90's the only song from that album he played was Change in the Weather with the Blind Boys of Alabama. Simply amazing.
@sherryb5369
@sherryb5369 6 лет назад
You're not offending me in the least. I dispise political correctness as well. I was just making an assumption on why no one is speaking of him any more. I have always been a fan of John since CCR. When other people taught their children nursery rhymes, mine were singing, "Have you ever seen the rain comin' down on a sunny day"? Lol!! Being from Southeast Louisiana, his music is very endearing to us. Can't wait to see him in June!!

Steve Perry got rid of Ansley Dunbar cause they budded heads & Steve wanted things his way or the highway! He started doing crap with Greg Rolie but Greg was smart to leave! And watch VH1 behind the scenes bands that break up & how Steve Perry started to take charge & controlled everyone even the manager Herbie Herbert! Herbie Herbert was smart when Steve Perry fired him, & let him go hang himself when he went too far & that's when Neal Schon said enough is enough & had to fire Steve Perry for messing things up with the band, staff & with Herbie Herbert!

He appears to be difficult. Seeing him speak on a red carpet a few years back. Someone ask him if he would work with Neal Schon again and he said you know we are trying kinda of bobbed his head back and forth. Hell he hasn't seen Neal since the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. All Perry wants is his Royalties. And they are a ton of money. So he can get up everyday at 69 years of age go to Wegmans take an afternoon nap and not give a damn about anything else.

B. Berry It wasn't necessarily front page news since coke use was so common during that period.Check out Perry's flared up nose in the back of the 'Captured' album.The band were doing 300+ dates a year.I'm not judging the guy because he was one helluva singer.He always felt as if he was the 'new guy' in the equation and once he cemented his place in the band,he wanted to cover his assets.This however causes friction,yet Schon was OK with everything as long as the money kept rolling in.

Yeah.Perry hiring the 2 lawyers drove a wedge within the band.Schon obliged to Perry's demands(including the dismissal of Valory and Smith)because the hits were coming in.I seen the band on the Raised On Radio tour.Schon and Cain were looked like they were reduced to sidemen.
@KoffeeKat18
@KoffeeKat18 6 лет назад
New Avatar Ironically, this may have been a classic case of “Be careful what you wish for”. Steve took the band more in the direction of his vision, with his voice absolutely central to everything. Then with 300 tour dates per year, he clearly realized over the years that he was bumping up against the ceiling of physical impossibility that one voice, however amazing, can endure. Had he let the other guys showcase more, he could have rested a bit.
