A few years ago I picked up a book on Stoicism and realized that I had been thinking like that for quite some time prior to being formally introduced to the subject. I also noticed a trend among others who were also acting in accordance with the philosophy without realizing that they were. I think that it is an idea whose time has come (again).

I had a similar experience. I wrestled my whole life and realized much of this mentality is drilled into our heads

I recently found Stoicism and like you realized I had been applying Stoicism principles without knowing it.

Tom really hit the nail there on analytic tradition and how it has lead to this distinction in continental and analytic traditions plus the whole exclusivity of the club, Now logic has this loose interpretation colloquially while the analytic bros have this strict definition which is understandable in an academic sense but to translate that to the audience we need to meet in the middle and layout the foundations of logic and how it grounds every science that exists

I'm looking into exploring Somatic theory, practices therapy & merging it with stoicism in my practice and philosophy practice. Seeing where embodiment meets insight. many ideas about becoming & being in the body & the mind. So many notes taken from this interview. ❤ Thank you Parker & Tom

We can pull the breaks and don't have to go off the cliff. I love that. Totally agree. Sometimes an idea is indeed great but no need to take it to the extreme. I didn't know many of these things about stoicism before this video. Deep dive in stoicism indeed.

It's an inside job. From the inside out not from the outside in. It's important to go through these books but even more important for the books to go through you.

Really incredible interview and fascinating listen! I want to pick up that book! I’m reading Marcus right now and Epictetus and Seneca are next. Thanks for posting this and cool to hear your input as well from the Christian side of things. Keep up the great work man

Wish I would asked about Neostoicism as well, especially in light of your conversation on Calvin! Charles Taylor's secular age seems to want to identify at least some of the shifts in society at the feet to Justus Lipsius and those who followed him, as he sought to offer of a syncretized stoicism/christianity that modifies the Christian anthropological vision.

An interesting interview, but please note that Stoicism was not displaced by Christianity, it was eclipsed by Neoplatonism.

You got a good source on this? Would love to study it more

Yes the standard works on this are Michael Frede "Epilogue" in the Cambridge History of Hellenistic Philosophy, and Richard Goulet "Ancient Philosophers: A First Statistical Analysis." The latter is the result of a multi-volume dictionary of philosophers from antiquity that has been produced since the 1980's until 2015. It shows charts noting no-one referred to themselves as a Stoic by the time of the thirty century but Neo-Platonism and eclectic dominated@
