Every day I wake up with the intention of not swearing or taking the Lords name in vain and every day I fail at least once.😩 All I can do is try every day to be better than the day before.

Hi Pauline! I used to struggle with sins of the tongue. What helped me was this: every time I received Communion (in a state of Grace, of course) I would let Jesus rest and dissolve on my tongue for a little bit, and I would pray that He purify my tongue so that all that came out of my mouth would be for His glory. It helped me a lot and helped hold me accountable too!

Something for Catholics to think about: Are you going to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion on a tongue that is 'dirty' with swearing? We must strive to give Him a pure resting place, in our bodies and in our souls. Thank you Father Mike, for this beautiful talk and reminder. God bless!

@@chronicmasterbaiter5467 But it is called a curse for a reason. It's like cursing something or someone. Why does the devil like swear words? Why did Joan of Arc call her soldiers NOT to swear? I respectfully disagree, when used among adults. I'm pretty good at self-deprecating humor, and I've used vulgarity many times to get people to laugh at my expense. It's a good social skill for me and has worked well. However, obviously, you need to exercise discretion. I would never curse in front of my parents, or my children, no matter what. Among adult peers though, I found it can bring down guards when used appropriately. I call myself an a-hole all the time in front of my coworkers and they usually laugh. On the other hand I find I admire people who deliberately never curse. Tricky question.

We pray for him, and we pray for the Lord to calm his troubled waters. I'm not making excuses for him, but we hear it everywhere we go. Cameron Walker A great start would be that showing self control by not swearing around your mother, grandparents , siblings, women & children shows respect and love to family and a step closer to being a man who should protect women and children. With PRIVLEDGES comes responsibility. We have found the desire to be treated like an adult and to have privileges is enough of a motivation to at least begin controlling the language. Hopefully practicing virtue will spill out into other environments. Somehow boys think swearing is the beginning of being taken seriously like a man. A good desire but a wrong and very external display of manhood modeled everywhere by men. Hockey, Football spectators .... no longer a place to bring the family 🙁
@kelkabot

Does he get any consequences for swearing? Or rewards for not swearing for a stretch of time? Maybe some combination of the carrot and the “stick” (like taking his phone for a day) would make an effect. You know him best, but sometimes just reminding a kid of something or asking them politely doesn’t make a dent. I agree that it’s hard when the language is all around them.
@kelkabot
@kelkabot 9 месяцев назад
I stopped watching TV and movies a few months ago and my language has cleaned itself up almost automatically. (Well, I’m also praying the rosary a few times a week and staying on top of Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.) I’m no expert and still very much a sinner, but I think a focus on the good, the true, and the beautiful goes a long way toward making our speech more gentle. It helps me to remember that this is not a self-perfection project to build my ego around how good I can be, but a move toward bringing a more loving presence to the world. Pray for me, friends, and I will pray for you! Thanks, Fr. Mike!

People can't say one sentence without these words. If most of the movies or comedies were written without the disgusting crudeness, the show would be half its length . Really hateful to have to listen to how crude some (a lot of) people speak nowadays.

A good video. It hits on three very important thoughts. My litmus test is this: would I use that word/phrase if Christ were in the same room with me? If yes, then there is no sin. . I keep in mind that God (i.e. Christ) is present everywhere. As Jesus promised his disciples, "Surely I will be with you always to the end of the age..." And acknowledge by the Psalmist. "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely." . That should help me know when and where it is "okay" to swear. The answer I have found so far is "swearing is never okay." . The Bible is an excellent guide, as always: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. " Ephesians 4:29-31. . Whenever someone says it's okay to swear in such-and-such times, I'll leave that up to them and Christ to work thru when the time comes. As for me, I would not attempt to make such a case.

The word ‘blasphemy’ or ’taking God’s name in vain’ actually means using the name of God to cheat or abuse other people, or to justify evil-doing. Swearing is thoughtless and stupid, but it does create a bad atmosphere, like environmental pollution. I remember reacting to younger colleagues. A young woman kept saying “Jeeesus” when she got annoyed. When I asked her to stop, she said it didn’t matter, as she didn’t believe. I told her I found it offensive because Jesus is someone I care about. She didn’t seem convinced, so a quarter of an hour later, when I got irritated about something, I used her own personal name as an exclamation. Her reaction was: “What? I didn’t do anything wrong!!!” So I told her, if she thought it was okay to use Jesus’ name, then surely she wouldn’t mind my using her name in the same way. That made my point. She never used that name as an exclamation again.

Great video! You touched on this a little bit during this video, but I would love if you can do an entire video on humor. I have been wondering about what some guidelines are that we could use to judge if we should make a joke or not. Also I think it would go well with your past two videos about different types of speech. Lastly, there are some really good Bible passages about the importance of good/proper speech and I would love it if a little more scripture appeared in your future videos!

I am a Lutheran seminary student and one of my instructors was actually dropping f-bombs in class. My classmates told me to 'get over it' and when I spoke to the instructor about it he told me that cursing was Biblical. When Jesus cursed a tree, it died, so this false equivalency falls way short. We all need to communicate with grace and kindness, ever mindful of the power of words and the respect due to our listeners.

Eph. 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Col 3:8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Eph. 5:4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. But seriously, become Catholic! ;) That's why I did. My prayer to everyone who reads this 🙏May the Lord bless you and keep you. May his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace. 🙏 I nod in agreement with you. We should speak words that build each other up. The earth is hard to live in. We need to hear more words of love and empowerment rather than build thick skin and join in on what most people think is okay to do. I'm quick to think of 1st Cortinthians. Love is patient and kind...love does not dishonor others...Love is slow to anger.....I've heard swears that stir up anger for both the speaker and listener and stirs up embarrassment for the person that is either younger or doesn't have the tact to respond. Embarrassment leads to internal torment. Swearing does not glorify, magnify, or honor God. Swearing does not bless anyone.

I don’t wanna seem like that person who’s a naysayer for no reason, but I think the “it makes you seem unintelligent” thing is ridiculous. All the other arguments are making everything so much of a big deal, it’s frikkin exhausting. Let’s be real, 95% of whatever “profound” thing you have to say isn’t going to be an earth-shattering statement worth overthinking. I grew up where both my parents cussed regularly to add a little “kick” to what they were saying. Cuss words give a hint of stubbornness when someone “lays down the facts”. It is sometimes used to discourage the other person from taking the matter further as the speaker had the final say. The way I was taught, vulgar language is better used as a means to convince the other person your mind won’t be changed instead of a mere “vehicle for anger”. When “rational discussion is encouraged” with others who have that same or greater level of stubbornness, then the argument is as good as lost. Now, it is better to curb vulgar language with people who will have a calm and rational discussions, as the exchange is not about winning but understanding. But not everyone is a pretty-prissy-goody-two-shoes like that. Oftentimes, you have to make it undeniably clear that you put your foot down on your statement by using strong language. The lack of this display of willpower is embarrassingly emasculating and is telling of a waning resolve. Think about it: outside of the stereotype of curse words being “uneducated”, what is another idea a person using that language entails? Toughness. You don’t hear a wimpy person using cuss words. They’re usually overly polite and effeminate. And when a wimp does cuss, they’re lost in a sea of four-lettered-words without any intrinsic meaning to any of their sentences. Meanwhile a mentally tough person would “lay down the facts” and punctuate with an f-bomb or an s. The point is: *cuss words add a flair to mental resilience.* Than you for coming to my TED Talk.
@joshheeren1006
@joshheeren1006 4 года назад
So you are wimpy if you don't swear? Its exactly the opposite, swearing shows that you do not have the mental willpower to not say those words. You are tough when you are strong enough to choose what words come out of your mouth.
