I've already started using Tale Spire for my current campaign and I love it. We've been having the one other person in my group who also bought it stream over discord for the rest of the party to see so I can still hide all the behind the scene stuff.

One of my group HATES that they're not in control of their token but also REFUSES to buy the software... I'm just bewildered... Like they talked about cost comparison and think I should keep paying roll20 for their SUBPAR, INFERIOR, GLITCHY service compared to the beauty of talespire which is a ONE TIME PURCHASE of just 25 bucks... I've hardly ran into bugs in talespire and remember running into them in roll20 every week we played... Almost every goddammit week... Even with the dynamic lighting I was paying for which one point broke for MONTHS!!!

@@elgatochurro yeah. 25 bucks vs all the stuff we but as a DM... It's nothing! I also have Foundry VTT and while that's free for the players, it cost me more than this. And D&D Beyond subscription and content too. If the players can't invest $25 to your game, you can suggest them considering the cost of a Player's Guide and a good quality physical miniature first and then ask again if this sounds like too much...

TLDR get tailspire. It is freaking awesome. I am currently running a Curse of Strahd campaign for a mix of new and vet players and everyone loves it. It is super immersive. I do wish it supported external music and sound effects and I CANNOT WAIT for hero forge mini importing. I will admit, there is more work that goes into it if you make a custom map but talestavern has a bunch of maps that other people have made that you can import into your game so it saves a lot of effort. Talespire has become my favorite way to enjoy d&d.

Yep, this programm is fantastic! Costs only 16€(or 20$) which is not more than the cost of a Large Pizza. Our gaming group of 5 players have all picked it up and it runs so smoothly and once you practice abit it is also easy to use. We have our own Char sheets and all the books, so we don't need any(online Charsheets or rules). Have over 100hours of gametime put in already. Highly recommend this. Stay safe and Gruß from Germany

Buried the lead on this one guys. Tals Tavern community site and the speed and ease of importing maps made from others, from site to Talespire in 3 seconds ready to play. Generator programs integrated for forest and dungeons too. There is another clip in this lads.

It's hilarious Windbags of the coast promised something very similar to this when 4th ed launched. Talespire unlike that isn't vaporware and is brillant.

This looks great! Let me be the first to say I want my D&D less like a computer game, not more. I do appreciate all the work that has been put into it is amazing. Thanks for the video!

TaleSpire actually IS less like a computer game, not more, because it's just trying to emulate 3D terrain and minis on a tabletop. It has no built-in game rules or character sheets. You basically run a game in TaleSpire the same way you run a game IRL: everyone keeps their own character sheets, the minis and the game environment are only really used for tactical situations or possibly some exploration mode of play. Unlike a program like Foundry, there are no built-in macros for your skills and abilities, attacks and all that. The animation in TaleSpire for attacks and magic are just fluff, they have no functional purpose. I've heard GMs who run Roll20 and Foundry complain that their players start acting like it IS a video game: if there's not a macro button for something, the players assume they cannot do that, an issue TaleSpire is not prone to. The advantage this has to drawing tactical maps on a game mat or on graph paper is that it's 3D and clearly shows the battlefield. It wasn't mentioned in the video but when in combat mode, enemies not in the line of sight of your character are invisible. As you move your mini, more enemies might be revealed. It's still Early Access and there are things it probably should do but doesn't, but I love the aesthetic and the development philosophy.

My thoughts exactly. This is awesome alternative to Foundry of Roll 20 as it is just a presentation of the combat area and not the whole rule system. So if you love the feel of pen and paper, I think this is the best product (Owlbear rodeo being the next best thing) to use with the physical character sheets. Or you can combine this with other digital tools by using for example D&D Beyond on your phones for the character sheets and rolls. I love the idea and how easy it is to add stuff to the map in mid play.

I've got 95 hours put into TaleSpire so far, learning to build in it, putting together a Basic Fantasy RPG campaign to run in it. Loving it so far. The devs add new stuff to it every month or so (2 - 4 weeks typically between content packs). If you're building all from scratch it can be quick and easy or a long slog (me) if you go overboard in making boards extremely detailed or big. However, if you're not interested in building your own all the time, the TaleSpire community is adding new slabs and boards all the time that you can basically just cut and paste into your game for free, very, very quickly. One caveat: at the moment it only runs on PC, not Mac. I think there are only 3 or so devs building this so it might take them a while to make it compatible with Macs.

i want them to add a function to alter players point of view in regard to there tokens, make it so they can only see in a radius or a cone from there token. That way you don't have to make all secret rooms and halls hidden, or the monsters.

Want more features but can't wait for the devs to actually implement them? Then check out: talespire.thunderstore.io/ This website is a collection of unofficial custom plugins which add functionality to your base TaleSpire game ranging from being able to add custom content (Custom Mini Plugin), being able to add icons to the base (Icons Plugin), being able to display text above the mini (States Plugin), being able to roll in the Chat (Chat Roller Plugin), being able to roll by clicking on a Character Sheet (Character Sheet plugin), being able to Grab/Drag props/minis (Grab/Drop Plugin) and may more. Tried it, and no, it isnt worth it. It is WAY to early for release. Basic things like Character sheets, Basic rule sets/systems... it cant even go full screen windowed and the program is actually off center. so you have to drag it around to get it to look normal and actually see menus.

I dunno... "theater of the mind" gaming is _so_ much more involving than visual-heavy methods of entertainment, and this kind of program takes you farther away from that than ever. I really don't want to see tabletop gaming turn into computer gaming. I've written six generations of simulation software for tabletop RPG games like D&D, and with each one I've become more convinced that the real trick is to empower the gamemaster to deliver the environment _directly_ to the players' imagination by language. The thing that makes games like D&D great is the fact that language _drastically_ exceeds blunt visualization in terms of nuance and atmosphere. This is why movies almost never surpass their written source material-LOTR being the one possible exception.

A question... doesn't looks like better Neverwinternight 1 and 2 for that? You have the Aurora toolset to make a much more credible scenario, and the DM interacting with the persistent world, with more than 100 players at the same time if you computer can hold them, and also complete animations of all. I think NWN was the perfect online, killed by the MMOs in all aspects, including the role playing. But shouldn't we deserve a real NWN 3, PC centred obviously, because if consoles get involved in the design (as in Dragon Age 2 and others which forgot the toolset...), we will have more casual crap.

I like the concept of Tale Spire but in my honest opinion I think it's just lacking something attractive, Maybe I'll visit it again in a years time.
