Is TangleDeep Still Worth It In 2024? An In-Depth Review! 

The game mechanics are a nice callback to games I am fond of (necrodancer PMD woo!), but coming from the hell that is ADOM, Noita, and Caves of Qud this past year makes me want to leave any more time investmest into new games on the backburner. Nice review, by the way. I appreciate that you are pushing out a video despite not fully completing the game. Having fun without going for 100% is an underrated roguelike quality.

The music in this game is so good. I have probably listened to the music for more time than I’ve spent playing the game, and I’ve got like 50+ hours on the game

Zircon was known for music before making this game, so hearing the 5/5 for audio is unsurprising. While metaprogression is not required, they do suggest using that version as the default.

You were right about being beckoned with the art. Thumbnail got me so hard I considered getting the game before even watching the video

1:19 I know it popped up on the screen for just a second, but I do think it's important to emphasize that there is a difficulty mode that doesn't include permadeath. I know that's not unique to this game and that experienced traditional roguelike fans might not bother with it, but when talking with people who enjoy other kinds of roguelikes but don't play traditional ones, complete permadeath usually comes up as the biggest point of contention. Or rather, that they'd give them a try if there was an option to disable permadeath. Given that, the inclusion of a non-permadeath mode could be a big draw to roguelike fans who would appreciate that, as well as dispel the notion that all traditional roguelikes are invariably permadeath no question. Not only that, but it's also good for those who want to focus more on finding out the full story.

Heroic mode is definitely the way, you can get some bonkers items with item dreams and bank em for if you die.

I find Tangledeep's difficulty to be very strange when looked at from a bird's eye view of people playing the game. Not in the sense that there's anything wrong with the game's difficulty itself, but more that it seems that people either find it incredibly hard to survive or decently easy outside of particularly tough encounters with almost no in between. My best guess is that the game is balanced with the assumption that you know the standard roguelike tactics used to avoid taking too much damage, so if you don't use those tactics, you're going to die or at least run out of resources much quicker. This results in someone like me who had previous roguelike experience when I started playing basically never going below the flask soft cap and tons of healing items in my inventory, but a lot of new players brought in with the visuals thinking that healing is limited to a ridiculous degree.

Have a bit of a love/hate with mystery dungeon games, they are appealing but i haven't really found one that made me not want to stop playing it after a few runs. This is mostly because they were made with bullshit mechanics in mind (Shiren comes to my immediate trauma). Might still pick this up later, though unsure if its one that i would stick with, but i wont know until i try it.
