If your objective with Mavericks is to encourage musical exploration, you've achieved it with this episode. I'm a 70-year-old who grew up in Nashville. I always hated it and I always hated country music. As it's evolved I guess I'm evolving too. I plan to explore Mr. Isbell's music solely because of this presentation.

You owe it to yourself to explore a band called the Drive By Truckers. Isbell was in the early line-up of this band on and off. One of the greatest bands of all time IMO

I had not heard of Jason Isbell prior to this video but I find him to be a very decent, very open and honest sort of person who is committed to being himself, to being true to himself, which is another way of saying that he has integrity. I will definitely be checking out his music. And, as always, Ari, great job interviewing him. This is yet another reason you are one of my very favorites on MSNBC.

I knew nothing about him until a couple years ago. I found that he is arguably the greatest living songwriter. The Dylan of our age. He has a way with words that hit me straight in the gut. I find things in his song that go straight to things in my life.

I don't remember how I first stumbled across Jason Isbell, but I do remember the first time I listened to Southeastern. It was so raw, emotionally, that I was absolutely gutted. Listened to it over and over and cried every time. There are very few songwriters I can say that about and I've been on this earth awhile. Also, it makes my heart warm to see him so happy and healthy. 🥰

Where did this interview come from? Kinda shakes up our contemporary human condition, don't it. Ari takes all of us to a new, higher plateau, and sorta nourishes òur soul. Of course, his guests are the vital chord sharing rhythms and wisdom, visions, and concoctions.

I'm coming to this interview as someone who discovered Jason and Amanda about six months ago. I haven't listened to a lot of Isbell's work, but "If We Were Vampires" really hits me hard. Because it's about a longterm committed marriage. My husband and I just hit the 45-year mark this past summer. His lines in that song that I find *stunning* are "Maybe time running out is a gift/ I'll work hard til the end of my shift." Great discussion about norms for masculinity, how they're changing....

I had the same thought while reading thru the comments. I knew Jason was a special songwriter when I first heard Outfit years ago when he was with DBT. He's written so many great songs since but Vampires is incredibly emotional. I know I'm going to tear up every time but I still can't stop replaying it.

I'm not a big fan of country, just because I wasn't raised with it. But I always liked Jason Isbell, ever since I saw him on Stephen Colbert's show. His lyrics are so smart and thoughtful, and his music sounds good to me even though it's country, I don't know why. Thanks for this great interview.

Found Isbell on an old Tiny Desk vid and this interview was presented next. 48 minutes?! I would like to thank Ari, Jason, Jason's family and his therapist. Honesty comes at a cost. But there will always be people who recognize it. Those who need honesty are like that child you're now responsible for. You owe it to them. I was well served by Ari and Jason in these 48 minutes.
