Let's put Tesla's Smart Summon to the test in a variety of situations and see what happens...
In all seriousness, please use this feature responsibly. Make sure the car is within view when activated, generally avoid using Smart Summon in very busy parking lots, and abort Summon at the first indication of potential trouble.
The Tesla in this video was running software version 2019.32.12.2 at the time of recording.

What if the front camera where to fail while summoning? (for example a faulty camera die that fails when it got warm/colder than it once did) Should it continue? Well, this says Yes, yes it should. This is a very bad idea. So no, It shouldn't be doing that, I think you missed the whole point of this experiment.

I live in New England where we have snow and ice that would easily cover some but not all cameras. I live in a very densely populated urban neighborhood. That could cause some serious mayhem if it was accidentally triggered.

@@stanislasbarrage7579 that may be true but the car is much heavier and stronger than a person at walking speed so even though the initial speed wouldn't do damage the force behind it could do damage to stagnant objects or push non stagnant objects over/around.

@@TauCu If the camera is dead the system will detect it. In this case it detects the camera is in fine condition it is just that the vision is blocked by something. It would be more accurate if he actually destroyed the camera because at that point the system will detect it.

@@joshuam20 Would you have reacted any differently to a cone, that in all normal circumstances is stationary, suddenly comes to life? Unlikely. It's quite possible you wouldn't have seen it yourself. Sure, it needs close supervision at this point in its evolution. Anyone who suggests otherwise is being reckless. It's beta software and should be treated as such. The operator is still responsible for the car's behavior. It is useful in some circumstances with its current capabilities. I've used it to shorten my walk to the car. It does turn heads, which, in itself, is fun.

Smart Summon is currently in toddler mode. It has a lot to learn! Great series of tests simulating real world scenarios. It would be cool if the car’s path would be displayed on your screen when you engage come to me before it moves. If you could then alter the path on your screen it would follow orders instead of figuring everything by itself. It would still have to stop if anything moved into its path.

She compares the prices of ev's that are on the market today and shows that Tesla has the best price-performance ratio. I will never work as a doctor, but if Teslas and ev's in general are getting cheaper at the rate that they are currently at, then me and many other "not doctors" will be able to afford a Tesla or an equally good ev.

You can by using the "go to target" instead of "come to me". On the map, you set the target to the first intersection or place where the car needs to turn, then when it gets close to that spot, you move the target to the next point where it needs to turn, and so on, until you are coincident with the target. So although you're not directly drawing the path, you are building a path of striaght line segments and the car basically follows a striaght line in that case.

On top of what Alex has said there are already videos of the car driving its self to the front of the building during a huge rainstorm helping keep the driver more dry. Is that necessary? No. Is it useful? definitely.

this is such a cool concept. a few more years and this could probably drive around a parking lot to pick you up at the door without any real hassle. eventually i could see bigger buisinesses like costco or walmart putting "smart car pickup" markers to signal to the car where it should be going to safely pick up its passengers. (like a dedicated stop zone between the 2 main entrances or something.)

The catch-22 here is the more we use it, the more feedback Tesla gets and the smarter Smart Summon becomes. But, I really don't like using Smart Summon in its current state. Personally, I think I'd rather walk to my car; I could use the exercise anyway. It is a fun feature to impress kids!

At this stage Smart Summon is just a gimmick and IMHO not to be used at all. It is much too slow, it makes too many mistakes (which can be very costly or even dangerous), and the short distance required to Summon is useless. I do not want my Tesla Model 3 getting damaged so I will not be using Smart Summon. If they ever work the bugs out and make it useful by extending its range I may change my mind. Until that time, I can walk 200 feet in the rain to my car. Great video, very informative.

I love the concept of smart summon but the oversight of the cameras being blocked and still being able to be smart summoned concerns me greatly. That said, I love the attempt on Tesla's autopilot team and it will only get better with time and development but I think that most people are going to abuse the feature in its current limited form. Very informative video!

Now, nobody come at me, but, I think the only reason that the Tesla hit the cone that was coming in its path was because the cone was going too fast. When it went slower, it gave the Tesla more time to detect it, and stop.

I think your summation on Smart Summon using the ultrasonic sensors is correct. i1Tesla did the same test with blue painters tape in a recent What IF video. The car became very erratic and he had 3 or 4 layers of tape. I've had the phone key be a little flakey after a smart summon too - however I realized I'm holding my phone with the app so I just swipe back and clicked on unlock in the app :-) Given this is the first iteration of SS in the field I feel it is "so so" and will improve greatly with each release. We should be seeing the first update of this any day now (Wasn't there a tweet from Elon saying so?). For now baby sit it.

if somebody really wanted to vandalize your tesla, they could put tape on the front camera that detects pedestrians, objects, etc. that could cause some real damage in a public area and if you use the summon feature a lot.

The front sensor of the car is in the middle bettween the the lights way down in that black area it can only sense what at front not at the are were the lights are try walking and stoping on tge lights while using smart summon it wont stop only when you are literally at the front centre

Sounds like you're thinking of the pre-refresh Model S forward radar location. The radar is in a different spot now, but it shouldn't matter much since the radar's narrow field of view makes it almost useless for close range detection. Close range detection is the job of the ultrasonic sensors, which basically have full coverage.

Impressive. I don't think anyone will want to use this feature. Having a 35+ thousand dollar car drive itself does not sound like a good idea but a feature that you could brag about and show off in a parking lot. We shall see what the future holds for humans. Great video. Loved the comments about using it responsibly. It will get better over time as it learns. For now it is line of sight only. You need to look out for any obstacles and are responsible to control the vehicle.

All electronics have glitches, unpredictable ,prone to failure and always needs a restart , like my cellphone, ring doorbell, WiFi router and even reverse camera on both my drivers.

Great Video! I do hope you called Tesla to report the car trying to summon with the cameras blocked. That is a is a major problem. I can't believe tesla would not have done that test before releasing the software.....so maybe they already know.

I almost wonder if they got the cameras that need to be clear backwards. Once the back one was clear it started to move, but I would think it shouldnt try to move until at least the front camera was clear.

I wonder if ultrasonic/radar is enough to confidently use smart summon at low speed. I'm convinced that little backup dance it likes to do is a sensor sweep to ensure the area right in front of the tires is clear after watching a few videos.
