Charities are calling on the Government to scrap the cap - saying it plunges thousands of households - and hundreds of thousands of children - into poverty.
It was introduced by the coalition government back in 2013 - and it was intended to force claimants into work. There are different limits depending on whether you live in or outside London, or whether you're a family or not... but for a family living outside London, the figure is £22,000, which works out at just under £2,000 a month, and about £400 a week.
Most people claiming benefits will be affected by this - as it affects Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Jobseekers Allowance, and a whole host of others...

@vikingfrog7204 Thank you for your input. I think you mean 'our' support systems. Our system works as a collective, and naturally, some receive more than others. I think there is a correlation between the increasing number of adult welfare claimants either getting diagnosed with conditions ie mental health issues, and children of claimants getting diagnosed with conditions ie ADHD etc. All of these type of conditions increases the amount of benefits you receive which are not included in the benefit cap. This may explain the callers situation. The other point is that to have take home pay of £22k ie benefit cap level, your actual salary would need to be around £30k. The welfare system incentivises people to not work and get a diagnosis, hence the UK having the largest number of people with disabilities in Europe! Basically if you have few qualifications and skills so all you could get would be minimum wage dead end jobs and you have kids it isnt worth working even with in work benefits. Better off on full benefits. I also am fed up with the argument that most people on benefits are working - yes, working the minimum number of hours to maximise working benefits and keep the DWP job coaches off your case!
@davidflood8881
@davidflood8881 9 часов назад
They should be supported back to work. No other country in the world gives so much handouts to people for having kids and not working. What do they expect? 50 grand a year on benefits?
@daviniarobbins9298

Some on benefits don't even get £22,000 a year. I get £15740.40, that includes PIP but not Council Tax Reduction benefit. That includes rent and other day to day expenses. I hate to have to agree with Kevin benefits are not the problem it's low wages. It is survivable but not living. I couldn't run, maintain and insure a car on that amount of money. By the time I pay my rent, buy food and pay bills I have nothing left. I got currently about £10 in the bank to last me 9 days.

Here’s a crazy idea, why not pay people a decent living wage and ensure the cost of living is manageable. Many who work full time have to claim benefits! Rising costs for the working person delivered by billionaire companies supported by successive governments. Energy companies yet again reporting billion pound profits and what a surprise energy costs rising by 10% just before winter. Fuel allowance being removed and single person council tax likely being removed, just 2 examples of what’s to come. Starmer is proving that politicians are cut from the same cloth..Politicians motto ‘what’s in it for me?’

@tracyking6689 No doubt you should be proud of your achievements. However should you not acknowledge that you were fortunate in your sisters and friends helping you for nothing? Was not that a social benefit? How much did you save on professional childcare? Also, you've overestimated the value of benefits - the cap includes rent - you won't get rent plus £2000 per month.

Most on benefits get no where near £22,000 a year. Universal Credit standard allowance for over 25s outside London is about £393 a month. The monthly benefit cap is about £1200 to £1300 a month. That includes any housing benefit you might get. You only get near £22,000 if you got children and a disabled child.
