The M3 is a living legend in BMW's lineup for years. Over time things BMW has moved away from the connected Ultimate Driving Machine experience that this E36 M3 provides. Under the hood is a 3.2L inline-6 that produces 240HP & mated to 5-speed manual gearbox. The exterior has the unique M3 front fascia and M wheels. On the inside you will find nicely bolstered original seats, a MOMO steering wheel and slick shifting 5-speed gearbox. Is the 1997 BMW E36 M3 the most iconic M3 ever built?

I’m loving the 850 from the 90’s and the 635 from the 80’s. This M3 is a great way into BMW’s of that period.

I have a ‘97 M3 4/5 in my garage right now I recently picked up. It is the 2nd one I have owned. First one was 14 years ago. Love it...when it is not costing me money in the shop. Such a joy to drive. Love the sound of the S52 engine.

I have owned 3 of these over the years. The E36 M3 was a very special car. I had one with a manual transmission and two with automatics. Every one of them were very fun and enjoyable. I used to think these cars were fast, back in the mid-90s and late 90s, but they are slow compared to today's sports sedans. I still think they look great and have panache. Great review Joe! I really don't care for that steering wheel however. That is a zonk! Should have original wheel.

I am still blown away by condition of this vehicle! 😳. The interior and exterior of this vehicle is absolutely 💯% exceptional....l am shocked 😲 by condition of the seats and complete dashboard dude. It took many years to get my E36 just right. Buttery smooth transmission (stage 2 fx racing clutch), all new cooling, deferred maintenance , new tires and a Stromung exhaust. Sounds and drives amazing! And yes I get as much as 30mpg highway.

My aunt owned a 1994 BMW 325i 5MT, and while it was nothing compared to an M3, it was the car that started my love for cars. Still the most beautiful and timeless 3 Series generation in my opinion.

Should have looked in the original trunk lid toolbox. That really tells you if you've got a really good one. Unfortunately mine had like 4 tools in it, so just a good one not great!

Personally I think that this is the best looking M3, along with being one of BMW’s best designs. In especially like later the euro spec 4-door sedan with the 3.2 I6.

I owned a 97 M3 Evolution, in Techno Violet with the 343 Bhp motor, and that is right up there with anything I have driven since.

@@RaitisRides She was my first BMW, and an absolute beast. Power delivery was instant at any RPM, and performance to rival serious sports cars. In 2002 the oil pump failed (common fault) and she snapped #2 rod in the motor, and bent the exhaust cam. 4 weeks later, and an £8k engine replacement I got her back, but the magic was gone. Traded her in for a new mk2 Exige. Still love BM's and my wife's 2019 M140i Shadow is a proper missile.

I've had both. They are both amazing, but the e36 M3 is the more fun daily. Hard to go wrong with either, save maybe maintenance, the M5 was very expensive to maintain.

@@RaitisRides if you can test/review a manual (or auto) version of a 228i or 230i, I think you'll appreciate the light chassis and engine combo ;) M sport package is also nice, but not necessary. RWD or xDrive - both great, xDrive is more traction of course. It's also a great used option if a person doesn't want to go close or above $30k. Cheers

The best ever build is the M3 E46 GTR with the V8 and 10 cars build. They need it for omologation, to race Le Mans. 250k price for one so :)))). But the best M3 I think is the E46. The last classic in design...

One of my fav BMWs and my fav M car. I had a chance to buy a E36 M3 four door, silver with a black interior. Ten or fifteen years ago, it was $20k.

US Spec lol We in europe got E36 M3 3.2 with ~320hp. BMW made US E36 M3 worse, because e34 M5 and e30 M3 weren't successful.

Hey Joe, enjoyed your video a lot like all of yours, but who the hell is Victor, if I may ask 😃? Btw, the euro spec 3.2l engine had 321 hp mated to a 6-speed manual , whereas the 5-speed came with the earlier 3.0l engine, which was good for 286 hp (still more than the 240 hp on this 3.2l US specs!!). Unfortunately, that was typical with US regulation ruining/diluting good Germen cars back in the 80s and 90s due to more strict emission controls, safety, etc.
