Is the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic RS a hatchback BARGAIN or a BUST?

The Chevy Sonic RS tries to take the versatility of a hatchback and add more aggressive styling. Under the hood is a 1.4L turbocharged inline-4 that produces 138HP and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sonic RS has a unique front fascia, wheels, and interior bits. Is the 2020 Chevrolet Sonic RS a hatchback HIT or a BUST?

If we could combine the interior of the Soul, the reliability of the Fit, and the looks of the Sonic, I think we'd have a winner.

Bought my 2018 Sonic RS LT last year for under $17k fully loaded with convenience package. For that kind of money it's hard to beat. Has really quiet interior going down the highway. 6 speaker sound system is pretty dang good with andriod auto. I also get 38-40 mpg right at 70 mph with the 1.8 L.

As someone who currently owns a 2014 Sonic LTZ Hatchback... I can tell the changes have been made since my model year (Infotainment, dashbooard, rear llights) . The engine is still the same as my 2014, It was an optional upgraded engine in my car and has been around for a while. If it's like the 2017 SONIC RS than this would be a great buy for a young adult/teenager, fits 3 adults in the back seat! I used mine to do Uber and everyone loved the ride. It got great gas mileage when I drove it normally and if you want to go fast you have to use the tap shift in the Sonic to get past that slow shift stepping the trans is used to. I mean come on its an economy car I got roughly 34-48 mpg under normal conditions and using the tap shift 17 mpg it will work for you if you need it, take a test drive in one if you don't believe me. Point blank period great car! might buy another after I finish paying off my Blazer RS!

@@ToyotaCelicaDude1 Progress, right ? Build to the EPA #s. However those #s are for comparison only and have been posted with the disclaimer "your mileage may vary" for decades. Second tank, 32.8, lots of traffic and errand running at my destination, third, 32.7 with side trips to the Salton Sea and Blythe with the AC running while I took pictures.Haven't run the #s for the leg home as I haven't This is larger car with a 2.2 N/A 4 cyl engine. It has always topped initial EPA #s [22 City, 32 Hwy AT] and especially the revised ones where the EPA just lopped off 10% to better reflect "real world figures" [more Fed BS double talk but that's another story]. I have gotten as high as 39 and many tanks of 35-36 on trips. Always 22-23 in the city. Too bad as I had considered the Sonic [with the N/A 1.8] as a replacement for the Saturn but why waste money? I owned a 2015. Had it for 5 years until a traded it in to buy a Cadillac. Those backseats have NO room. The passenger seat had to be moved forward to fit our Graco car seat in the back, so if I had a friend who was any taller than 5’6” riding with me, then they’re riding in the back because their knees will be in the dash. The performance was very lackluster, for a turbocharged 4 cylinder..especially if you ran air con on those hot summer days then I had minivans and 90s Buicks outrunning me under normal acceleration getting on the highway, while my little Sonic was pumping its guts out just to reach 70 up the on ramp. So make sure you have plenty of room before pulling out with AC on. 😂 It wasn’t a bad car overall because it took me everywhere I wanted to go, but it needs a refresh and that 1.4 and 1.8 needs an overhaul. There are better, more powerful options that offer the same things for what GM is charging us for this. I love this color though.

7:42 Calling that part a "snack box" is very clever haha, I woudn't recommend storing snacks in your car because that will eventually make the interior dirty with food gunk, but it was a funny moment in the video.

I have this same car 🤣 we bought it off the showroom floor and we were only buying it due to some jerk totaling the car I had. I've had it for 2 years and still love it. I do wish it was a 6 speed manual but whatever. The turbo and ignition coil have had to be replaced already but other than the it's been great. I paint and clean for a living and can fit a 6ft ladder, ALL my cleaning stuff, tools, a 60#dog, and painting supplies nicely. I also fit a used dishwasher, granted I only had cleaning stuff with me that day so it was in the front seat. I also drive about 70-80 miles daily due to where I live and it gets good gas mileage. I am kinda bummed bc I was the only one in my area, like a 70+mile radius that has this car but now I have a twin, same color and everything 🙄🙃 I do wish it had better storage up front though. I had a Mazda 3 and the glove boxes were HUGE. It's also hard to fit 2 route 44 drinks in the cup holders in the middle, even 1 is difficult but manageable. But overall, I love my car and will keep it!

I have a 2016 Spark and recently test drove the 2019 Sonic. The only reason I didn't get a Sonic in 2017 was I absolutely hated the speedometer. It looked like it was an afterthought. But they changed it to look like the Spark in the newer models. The Sonic I recently drove is the RS which has all the bells and whistles. It has a quicker response time than the Spark which is nice.

I didn't love my 2013 Sonic but I am 6'2 and needed a compact. Plus all of the plastic inside wasn't great. Icons on the steering wheel buttons rubbed off. Not saying it's horrible. I'm just nit picky and it wasn't for me. I drive a Corolla XSE now and it's the perfect balance of basic and nice features that I was looking for.

Finally, a car I can afford :) Right now I drive a 2014 Chevy Cruze RTZ, with the 1.4L turbo (I think the 2014 was rated at 138 hp?) Anyways, it (my Cruze) has been a very good car (100k so far), I get 36+ mpg real world on long road trips @70+ mph. I've always wondered how much better the mpg would be on these Sonics since they use the same engine and are a much lighter car.
@Traysandor
@Traysandor 4 года назад
If the MPG I get on my 2014 Sonic with the same 1.4T is anything to go by, the MPG will probably be about the same as what you got in your Cruze - maybe slightly better, but not noticably so. I do mixed highway and city driving and average around 29 mpg or so. It doesn't sound like that MPG rating has changed much in the newer models, just the discontinuation of the old base engines.

I love my 2020 Sonic LT RS Premier. I traded my 2017 LT RS Hatchback to upgrade to the 2020 Premier. Both Sonics are/were very reliable. Two complaints I have is that the driver's armrest feels like a 2X4 piece of wood (I cannot use it) and the gas mileage could be a little bit better. Believe or not, sometimes my 2017 Camaro RS gets better mpgs than my Sonic on the same route to work. I only use the Sonic on weekends and when I put the Camaro away for the winter.

I’m seeing a bust. $21k is steep for a car in this class. You’ll definitely pay under $20k if you go with one of the Korean brands. The Honda Fit is probably the best in its class. Toyota also has the Yaris that’s good for a first time buyer. Chevy is catering to the ladies with the shade of blue that they introduced. It’s great of you to include these kind of cars in your reviews. It’s impressive how you can review a Ferrari one day and a Chevy scooter the next. 🙇 Excellent job once again 👍

I have a manual RS hatch. I liked the look of the headlights and the IP (both are different than new one’s). With a tune it’s actually fun to drive: good brake and steering feel, nice rotation, quiet puttering around town and good mpg. I got it in 2015 when it was a year old with 13k miles for less than $13k. Had a couple issues but nothing major (once that one issue was figured out). The shifter cables need upgraded for quicker shifting from the factory and it should have came from the factory with the tuned power it has now (173hp/195ftlb both at the wheels). Not perfect but for the price, it’s fun to drive! Not too keen on the new design though 👎🏼
